Investigators from several different organizations were in the field shortly after the earthquake recording aftershocks and checking intensities. The data from postal intensity surveys and field personnel are still coming in, and it will be some time before it is all evaluated and analyzed. This preliminary list of the results of our own field investigations is being produced now in order that the information we gathered may be combined with that of other researchers for analysis.

Our investigation, conducted from July 28 to August 3, was designed to delineate the areal distribution of the intensities and to document the amount and type of damage in the epicentral region. Tentative intensities have been assigned to these reports and they have been plotted in figure 1. However, as more information becomes available from other investigators, some of these values may be changed and other locations may be added. Therefore no attempt has been made to contour the data. A maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VII was assigned to Maysville, Ky., approximately 50 km north of the epicenter, based on the concentrated chimney and other types of building damage there. Elsewhere, similar but scattered chimney damage has been assigned intensity VI.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801242","usgsCitation":"Hopper, M.G., and Reagor, B.G., 1980, Field survey of intensity for the earthquake of July 27, 1980, Sharpsburg, Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1242, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801242.","productDescription":"31 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":426085,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1242/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142904,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1242/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kentucky","city":"Sharpsburg","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -83.94432382381211,\n              38.212285759691355\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.94432382381211,\n              38.19556213355173\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.91274325321169,\n              38.19556213355173\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.91274325321169,\n              38.212285759691355\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.94432382381211,\n              38.212285759691355\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fce4b07f02db5f5453","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hopper, Margaret G. hopper@usgs.gov","contributorId":2227,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hopper","given":"Margaret","email":"hopper@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":159941,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reagor, B. The method was developed by multiple-regression techniques and applies to floods with recurrence intervals from 2 to 100 years.

The State is divided into three regions, and sets of equations for calculating peak discharges based on physical basin characteristics are provided for each region. In the northern region, flood-peak discharges are related to drainage area, forest cover, and 2-year 24-hour rainfall. In the southern region, flood peaks are related to drainage area alone. In the eastern region, peaks are related to drainage area, slope, storage, forest cover, and two composite soil categories. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations in the northern region range from 38 to 49 percent. For the southern region, the standard errors of estimate vary from 52 to 86 percent, and for the eastern region they vary from 37 to 40 percent.

Maximum observed flood peaks, basin characteristics, and flood-frequency characteristics are tabulated for 234 gaged sites in Maryland and nearby in surrounding states. At 39 of these sites, a rainfall-runoff model was used to obtain synthetic flood-frequency data. Furthermore, when certain physical properties of the geologic materials such as texture, hardness and fracture spacing are observed during geologic mapping, a method can be used to predict shear-wave velocity from the descriptions of geologic units. By measuring shear-wave velocities in key units together with the above data, regional maps depicting the earthquake shaking hazard can be compiled. The goals of the current program are to provide shear-wave data in the Los Angeles area to compare with that in the San Francisco Bay Region where high-strain intensity data are available. The drilling was done by the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey under contract to the U.S. Geological Survey. The sites of all of the drill holes are within the Wasatch Plateau Known Recoverable Coal Resource Area (KRCRA) and in the Richfield Ranger district of the Fishlake National Forest. The purpose of the drilling was to identify and evaluate coal resources under public lands that may be included in a future coal leasing program.

The area is underlain by Cretaceous and younger rocks (table 1). The coal seams of economic interest are in the lower 200 ft of the Upper Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation, a complex sequence of intertonguing sandstone, shale and coal. Regional dip of the strata in the area is approximately 2° to the northwest. In July 1974, a project was initiated to evaluate the water resources of the area, determine the extent of irrigation, and to assess the future potential for irrigation supplies. This report provides well drillers, well owners, water users, and potential irrigators with the basic hydrologic data collected during the project. The 10 tables and eight figures show the location of irrigation wells, water-level networks to monitor ground-water and surface-water conditions, a pumpage network to estimate amounts of water used for irrigation, geologic data, municipal-well data, and water-quality data for selected wells. During peak snowmelt runoff, frequent measurements of water discharge and sediment-transport rate provided data describing the inflow and outflow of water and sediment. In spring 1979, bankfull stage was exceeded on 8 days. Maximum discharge was about 32 cubic meters per second, which has a recurrence interval of about 2 years. The median particle size of bed material is 1.28 millimeters; the 35 and 65 percentiles are represented by diameters of 0.50 and 2.88 millimeters, respectively. The average water-surface slope in the reach is 0.0007 and varies little with river stage. Bedload-transport rates ranged from a little less than 0.001 to a little more than 0.1 kilograms per meter of channel width per second. Median bedload grain size, with several exceptions, ranged from 0.4 to 1.5 millimeters. Gravel-size particles generally constituted 10 to 40% of the bedload. Suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 6 to 95 milligrams per liter. Suspended sediment smaller than sand constited about half the measured suspended sediment, ranging from 17 to 81%. Orbital remote sensing and measurements discussed include (1) relative ages and inferred absolute ages, (2) gravity, (3) magnetism, (4) chemical composition, and (5) reflection of radar waves (bistatic). Earth-based remote sensing and measurements discussed include (1) reflection of sunlight, (2) reflection and scattering of radar waves, and (3) infrared eclipse temperatures. Photographs from the Apollo missions, Lunar Orbiters, and other sources provide a fundamental source of data on the geology and topography of the Moon and a basis for comparing, correlating, and testing the remote sensing and measurements. \r\n\r\nRelative ages obtained from crater statistics and then empirically correlated with absolute ages indicate that significant lunar volcanism continued to 2.5 b.y. (billion years) ago-some 600 m.y. (million years) after the youngest volcanic rocks sampled by Apollo-and that intensive bombardment of the Moon occurred in the interval of 3.84 to 3.9 b.y. ago. Estimated fluxes of crater-producing objects during the last 50 m.y. agree fairly well with fluxes measured by the Apollo passive seismic stations. \r\n\r\nGravity measurements obtained by observing orbiting spacecraft reveal that mare basins have mass concentrations and that the volume of material ejected from the Orientale basin is near 2 to 5 million km 3 depending on whether there has or has not been isostatic compensation, little or none of which has occurred since 3.84 b.y. ago. Isostatic compensation may have occurred in some of the old large lunar basins, but more data are needed to prove it. \r\n\r\nSteady fields of remanent magnetism were detected by the Apollo 15 and 16 subsatellites, and the lunar dipole field was revised to no more than 6x 10 19 gauss. High-resolution mapping of fields of weak remanent magnetism (to 0.1 gamma) was made possible by the Apollo plasma and energetic-particle experiment. Although the causes of remanent magnetism are poorly understood, correlations with geologic units suggest the results may ultimately have farreaching significance to lunar history. Maria are much less structured by strong surface magnetic anomalies than the highlands. The strongest anomalies are associated with ejecta of farside basins, plains materials filling pre-Imbrian craters, and other old Imbrian to pre-Imbrian units. The high remanent fields could be due to cooling of ejecta units in an ancient magnetic field, lunar regolith maturity, extensive reworking and disruption of a magnetized layer, or simply surface roughness. \r\n\r\nOrbital geochemical experiments have shown that lunar high lands have larger Al: Si ratios and smaller Mg: Si ratios than maria. These two ratios are inversely related on a regional basis. With the exception of fresh craters, albedo and Al : Si ratios vary directly, showing that compositional differences as well as exposure of fresh materials are responsible for high albedos. Statistically treated data show that geologic contacts and compositional boundaries are concentric and can be roughly matched. Some craters on mare material have penetrated the mare fill, bringing highland-type materials to the surface. Natural radioactivity from thorium, potassium, and uranium is inversely correlated with elevation. Mare regions are enriched in iron, titanium, and magnesium relative to the highlands. \r\n\r\nOrbital bistatic-radar results provide estimates of surface roughness at two scale lengths (about 30 m and 250 m), which agree with visual estimates of roughness. The dielectric constant of the lunar surface, where sampled, is uniform to 13-cm radar and near 3. Precipitation in the mountainous upper part of the watershed is the primary source of flow in the Mojave River. Total precipitation at Lake Arrowhead, representative of the mountainous area, was 98 inches in the 1969 water year and 93 inches in the 1978 water year. Of these totals, 94 inches in 1969 and 88 inches in 1978 fell during the rainy season, December through April. The resulting flood period in 1969 produced an instantaneous peak discharge of 18,000 cubic feet per second at Afton, about 100 miles downstream from Lake Arrowhead. This discharge had an approximate flood-recurrence interval of 30 years. An instantaneous peak of 24,800 cubic feet per second was measured during the 1978 floods at Deep Creek. This discharge had an approximate flood-recurrence interval of 20 years.

A comparison of the hydrologic data for the 1969 and 1978 flood periods indicates that although more precipitation occurred in 1969, more recharge occurred in 1978. The factors that caused the greater recharge were: (1) The more evenly distributed precipitation from December 1977 to April 1978, allowing for more uniform surface-water runoff in the Mojave River; (2) the dams constructed in the upper basin after 1969, which regulated floodflow peaks and allowed more water to stay in the basin; and (3) the lower water level in the aquifer in 1978, which made more space available to store the recharge water.

Total recharge resulting from the floods is estimated to have been 245,000 acre-feet in the 1969 water year and 282,000 acre-feet in 1978. At present (1979) costs of water from Silverwood Lake, the 1969 recharge would be worth about $4.6 million and the 1978 recharge about $5.2 million. If the water were derived from the turnout of the California Aqueduct, the undelivered costs would be about $4.9 million for 1969 and $5.6 million for 1978.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80207","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Mojave Water Agency","usgsCitation":"Buono, A., and Lang, D.J., 1980, Aquifer recharge from the 1969 and 1978 floods in the Mojave River basin, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-207, Report: iv, 25 p.; 1 Plate: 22.11 x 18.02 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80207.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 25 p.; 1 Plate: 22.11 x 18.02 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408667,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0207/figure-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":408666,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0207/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140585,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0207/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mojave River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.05908203124999,\n              34.14363482031264\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.05908203124999,\n              36.05798104702501\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.59814453125001,\n              36.05798104702501\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.59814453125001,\n              34.14363482031264\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.05908203124999,\n              34.14363482031264\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a5d44","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Buono, Anthony","contributorId":48175,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buono","given":"Anthony","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157155,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lang, David J.","contributorId":36548,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lang","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157154,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The strongly implicit procedure (SIP) numerical method is used to solve the set of simultaneous equations. New data processing techniques and program input and output options are emphasized. The quifer system to be modeled may be heterogeneous and anisotropic, and may include both artesian and water-table conditions. Systems which consist of well defined alternating layers of highly permeable and poorly permeable material may be represented by a sequence of equations for two dimensional flow in each of the highly permeable units. Boundaries where head or flux is user-specified may be irregularly shaped. The program also allows the user to represent streams as limited-source boundaries when the streamflow is small in relation to the hydraulic stress on the system. The data-processing techniques relating to ' cube ' input and output, to swapping of layers, to restarting of simulation, to free-format NAMELIST input, to the details of each sub-routine 's logic, and to the overlay program structure are discussed. The program is capable of processing large models that might overflow computer memories with conventional programs. Detailed instructions for selecting program options, for initializing the data arrays, for defining ' cube ' output lists and maps, and for plotting hydrographs of calculated and observed heads and/or drawdowns are provided. Output may be restricted to those nodes of particular interest, thereby reducing the volumes of printout for modelers, which may be critical when working at remote terminals. ' Cube ' input commands allow the modeler to set aquifer parameters and initialize the model with very few input records. Appendixes provide instructions to compile the program, definitions and cross-references for program variables, summary of the FLECS structured FORTRAN programming language, listings of the FLECS and FORTRAN source code, and samples of input and output for example simulations. The report includes ground velocity time histories, as well as, derived site transfer functions. These data have been collected as part of a study to evaluate the validity of using low-level ground motions to predict the frequency-dependent response of a site during an earthquake. For this study 19 nuclear events were recorded at 98 separate locations. Some of these sites have recorded more than one of the nuclear explosions, and, consequently, there are a total of 159, three-component station records. The location of all the recording sites are shown in figures 1–5, the station coordinates and abbreviations are given in table 1. The station addresses are listed in table 2, and the nuclear explosions that were recorded are listed in table 3. The recording sites were chosen on the basis of three criteria: (1) that the underlying geological conditions were representative of conditions over significant areas of the region, (2) that the site was the location of a strong-motion recording of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, or (3) that more complete geographical coverage was required in that location.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr801173","usgsCitation":"Rogers, A.M., Covington, P.A., Park, R., Borcherdt, R., and Perkins, D.M., 1980, Nuclear event time histories and computed site transfer functions for locations in the Los Angeles region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1173, ii,30 p.; Appendices, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801173.","productDescription":"ii,30 p.; Appendices","numberOfPages":"209","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":116757,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_80_1173.gif"},{"id":110894,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1173/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Los Angeles","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -118.66666666666667,33.63333333333333 ], [ -118.66666666666667,34.38333333333333 ], [ -118,34.38333333333333 ], [ -118,33.63333333333333 ], [ -118.66666666666667,33.63333333333333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db6968b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rogers, A. Simulations of steady-state conditions and historical ground-water withdrawals were consistent with observed data. The model was used to simulate the response of the aquifer system to an irrigation development plan in the Pojoaque River basin. Storage is the main source of water as 34.05 cubic feet per second (86 percent of the withdrawal rate) was simulated to be withdrawn from storage after 50 years of withdrawals for irrigation development; the maximum simulated water-level decline was 334 feet; and net simulated streamflow capture from the Rio Grande, Santa Cruz, Pojoaque, and Santa Fe Rivers was 5.63 cubic feet per second (14 percent of the withdrawal rate). The sensitivity of the model was tested by varying aquifer characteristics to the limits of the plausible range. Change in hydraulic head in Pojoaque River basin is most sensitive to hydraulic conductivity. In all simulations, after 50 years of withdrawals, the maximum simulated decline in hydraulic head ranged between 210 and 474 feet, storage in the aquifer system was the source of 80 to 90 percent of the water withdrawn from wells, and streamflow capture from the Rio Grande and its tributaries plus irrigation diversions from the tributaries of the Pojoaque River simulated a decrease in the flow of the Rio Grande of between 17.13 and 21.11 cubic feet per second.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801023","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs","usgsCitation":"Hearne, G.A., 1980, Mathematical model of the Tesuque aquifer system underlying Pojoaque River basin and vicinity, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1023, xiv, 181 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801023.","productDescription":"xiv, 181 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141821,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1023/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":399718,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1023/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Pojoaque River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106.09840393066406,\n              35.93354064249312\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.06098175048828,\n              35.93354064249312\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.06098175048828,\n              35.980228800645676\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.09840393066406,\n              35.980228800645676\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.09840393066406,\n              35.93354064249312\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db60ffd5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hearne, Glenn A.","contributorId":50882,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hearne","given":"Glenn","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159655,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The attempt to improve the quality of river water with this experiment was not successful because brine leakage from Anderson Lake to the nearby Pecos River through permeable subsurface rocks was greater than the previous natural spring inflow. Brine leakage from Anderson Lake from July 22, 1963, through September 30, 1968, was estimated by evaporation-pan, salt accumulation, and dissolved-constituent methods. The leakage values given by these three methods are in good agreement with each other and indicate that between the dates given, leakage from the lake was about 2 ,300 acre-feet, compared with a brine inflow to the lake of about 3,690 acre-feet. Other data indicate that pumping from the brine aquifer greatly reduced the natural inflow from brine springs to the Malaga Bend reach. The rate of brine leakage from Anderson Lake is probably greater than might be expected from other brine lakes in the area because the cavities in the bottom of the lake apparently are in hydrologic connection with the Pecos River. This connection is shown by a relation between the salinity of the Pecos River and the reservoir stage of Anderson Lake.
