This report presents findings of sediment transport, streamflow characteristics, and stream-channel morphology from the first year of the study and documents historical erosion. The study is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the city of Middleton and the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. Pheasant Branch, a tributary to Lake Mendota, drains 23.1 square miles of glacial drift. Channel erosion is severe within Middleton, requiring extensive use of erosion-control structures. Occasionally, channel dredging near the mouth and into Lake Mendota is required for boating. Comparison of stream-channel surveys of 1971 and 1977 shows the lowest part of the channel lowered 3 to 4 feet at some sites in the urban reach from U.S. Highway 12 downstream to Century Avenue. Downstream from Century Avenue, channel width increased from about 35 to 48 feet and channel cross-section area increased about 86 percent. A survey of Pheasant Branch in 1971 provided data for quantification of stream-channel changes since that time. Six erosion-control structures previously installed appear to have had some benefit in controlling head cutting in the channel. Average annual water levels in the Big Sioux aquifer and base flow discharge of the Big Sioux River near Brookings for 1970 through 1976 were used in the model. The model-computed water levels were within a few feet of the actual annual average water levels and the computed annual average base flow was 66 cubic feet per second compared to the actual base flow of 58 cubic feet per second.</p><p>The computer model was used to model transient conditions by simulating water levels and base flow from April through August 1976 and comparing the results with actual data. Evapotranspiration and pumpage changes were made for each month. There was no recharge from precipitation during the test period.</p><p>Several different computer simulations were made using different estimates of hydrologic parameters and conditions. Specific yield was increased from 10 to 15 percent which resulted in a much greater base flow for each month. Effective depth of evapotranspiration was changed from 5 to 10 feet which resulted in a very large decrease in base flow. A computer simulation made without irrigation pumpage resulted in an increase in the base flow from 0.66 to 9 cubic feet per second for August 1976 in the Big Sioux River near Brookings. The actual base flow for August 1976 was .01 cubic foot per second.</p><p>A water budget showed 22.2 inches of precipitation (average annual), 0.65 inch of surface runoff, 1.06 inches of ground-water outflow (base flow to river, 1970-76), and 20.49 inches of evapotranspiration.</p><p>The water from the Big Sioux aquifer is a calcium bicarbonate type and specific conductance ranged from 407 to 1,790 micromhos per centimeter at 25°C. The water is generally very hard, having a mean of 454 milligrams per liter of hardness.</p><p>A model simulation using all the pumpage that would be allowed by irrigation permits approved as of February 1979 simulated the withdrawal of 43,900 acre-feet of water for about 4 months during which time there was no recharge from precipitation. Analysis of errors associated with the paleomagnetic techniques used suggests that all laboratory measurement errors are smaller than those introduced by deformation of the volcanic units and the errors of orientation of cores in the field. The dispersion in the calculated virtual geomagnetic poles introduced by the geographic spread of sample localities around the western United States is less than the average uncertainty from an individual locality, about 2 deg.</p><p>The history of secular variation of field direction in the western United States has been reconstructed where sufficient time control exists. This history can be approximately reconstructed for the past 3000 years; in this time period, inclination varied from 44 to 72 deg and declination varied from 344 to 22 deg. These variations of the local field direction have periods between 500 and 1500 years. Prior to 3000 years B.P., the available observations allow reconstruction of the secular variation history only for short time intervals. The mean VGP obtained from paleofield directions measured from 77 volcanic units of Holocene and late Pleistocene age in the western United States does not coincide with the geographic pole of the Earth, but is displaced 2.5 deg from the geographic pole in a direction away from the sampled region. This displacement is just at the limit of significance at 95 percent confidence.</p><p>Using a 10<sup>-5</sup> torr vacuum furnace, paleointensities have been obtained by the Thelliers' method from both high-temperature oxidized and unoxidized basic volcanic rocks. Specimens which have undergone incomplete high-temperature oxidation in nature commonly fail the Thellier experiment; the relationship between NRM lost and TRM gained in a known magnetic field is not linear. Despite the vacuum, oxidation can still occur above 300°C in the furnace ovens. The best determinations of paleointensity come from specimens in which the remanence resides primarily in single phase titanomagnetite or in intergrowths of Ti-poor magnetite in ilmenite which have been formed by natural high-temperature oxidation. Paleointensity determined from these specimens varies from 0.364 x 10<sup>-4</sup> T to 0.865 x 10<sup>-4</sup> T (1.0 x 10<sup>-4 </sup>T = 1 0e);&nbsp;the period of oscillation of paleointensity is about 500 to 1000 years. Close agreement has been found between the paleointensity measurements from this study and those from archeomagnetic studies in the southwestern United States. The similarity of the periods of intensity variation to those of field direction changes may indicate that variations of the nondipole components of the geomagnetic field dominate both.</p><p>By combining paleomagnetic and archeomagnetic data from globally distributed localities, the magnetic dipole can be shown to have wobbled with a period as short as 2000 years. Local variation of the field can be described as the consequence of fluctuation of the dipole moment, wobble of the dipole, and longitudinal drift of a nondipole field similar to that of the present. Calcium bicarbonate was the dominant water-chemistry type; magnesium, sodium, and sulfate frequently occurred as codominant ions. Specific conductance values ranged from 50 to 6,000 micromhos. Mean values of specific conductance, dissolved solids , and hardness from the sampled aquifers were generally greatest in waters from the older sedimentary rocks of the Lance Formation, Lewis Shale, Mesaverde Group, and Mancos Shale, and least in the ground waters from the alluvial deposits, Browns Park Formation, and the basement complex. Correlations of specific conductance with dissolved solids and specific conductance with hardness were found within specified concentration ranges. On the basis of water-quality analyses, water from the alluvial desposits, Browns Park Formation, and the basement complex generally is the most suitable for domestic uses. Chemical constituents in water from wells or springs exceeded State and Federal standards for public-water supplies or State criteria for agricultural uses were pH, arsenic, boron, chloride, iron, fluoride, manganese, nitrite plus nitrate, selenium, sulfate, or dissolved solids. Total-coliform bacteria were detected in water from 29 sites and fecal-coliform bacteria were detected in water from 6 of the 29 sites. S. Geological Survey on the southeastern U. S. Atlantic Continental Margin to assess conditions and hazards that might cause or distribute oil spills or other pollutants, or constrain petroleum exploration or development of the area. These detailed investigations were requested and funded by the Bureau of Land Management to carry out its responsibility under the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Lands Act of 1969. Because of the energy crisis the decision had been made to lease on the southeastern continental shelf. A variety of studies had to be mounted quickly for input into decisions concerning the environment that would affect or constrain which lease tracks would be offered. The first lease sale, Lease Sale 43, took place in March 1978, and the environmental information on which this lease sale was based came in part from this initial effort and in part from a wide variety of pertinent data assembled from the literature by the Bureau of Land Management's Environmental Assessment Division. The compilation of relevant data for the Environmental Impact Statement for Lease Sale 43 also pointed up deficiencies in environmental knowledge in a number of areas. A method is described for estimating background phosphorus concentration in lakes of the Puget Sound lowland, Washington. Using a mass-balance ' Vollenweider-type ' model, phosphorus loadings were calculated from present-day phosphorus concentrations measured in lake water and from easily measured physical characteristics for 24 lakes in undeveloped, or insignificantly developed, watersheds. Phosphorus loading from forest (undeveloped) land was derived for each lake as the difference between the calculated phosphorus loading directly to the lake 's surface and loading by bulk precipitation (estimated from other studies). Forest-land loading to each lake was converted to the yield (mass per unit area) of the forested part of the watershed. The phosphorus yield from forest land was related to annual runoff, and the regression equation expressing this relationship explained 73% of the sample variance. By applying that regression equation to the appropriate annual-runoff data, the yield of phosphorus from forest land can be estimated for any lake in the study area. Phosphorus loading from forested land then can be added to direct loading by bulk precipitation to estimate background phosphorus loading for each lake. By applying the mass-balance model to calculated background loadings, background total-phosphorus concentration can also be calculated for all lakes in the study area that have stable thermal stratification during the summer. The standard error of estimate for calculated background loadings and concentrations averages about 25%.
