Streamflow records presented for 45 gaging stations and 45 crest-stage gages for the period of record. Streamflow record collection in the Yellowstone River basin began in 1889. For each gaging station selected for this report, a brief description is given for station location, drainage area , period of record, revisions of previously published records, type and history of gages, regulation and diversions, and extremes of discharge. These data are followed by tables of monthly and annual flow statistics, high-flow and low-flow frequency data, flood-frequency data, flow-duration information, and for natural-flow sites selected basin characteristics. For each crest-stage gage, the brief description consists of location, drainage area, period of record, and type and history of gage. This information is followed by tables of flood-frequency data and selected basin characteristics.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri8041","usgsCitation":"Moore, L.G., and Shields, R.R., 1980, Streamflow characteristics of the Yellowstone River Basin, Montana, through 1976: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-41, vi, 67 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8041.","productDescription":"vi, 67 p. Basins monitored are in two different geologic and hydrologic environments. Two basins are underlain predominantly by relatively impermeable indurated rocks in the Pottsville Formation of Pennsylvanian age. The two remaining basins are underlain predominantly by unconsolidated permeable rocks in the Coker Formation of Late Cretaceous age. Well yields from the Pottsville Formation generally range from 0 to 0.3 liter per second, whereas well yields from the Coker Formation generally range form 0.3 to 6.4 liters per second. Streamflow distribution reflects seasonal precipitation. Storm runoff is characterized by sharply concentrated flows of short duration that rapidly recede to low-flow conditions. Streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation frequently go dry, whereas those draining basins underlain chiefly by the Coker Formation have well sustained low flows. Water in the Pottsville Formation is slightly acidic and moderately hard to very hard. Dissolved solids concentrations ranged from 176 to 268 milligrams per liter. Water in the Coker Formation is soft, far less mineralized, and more acidic than water in the Pottsville. Surface water is generally soft, acidic and low in dissolved solids concentrations. Water in streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation was slightly more mineralized and less acidic than water in streams draining the Coker Formation.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/wri8022","usgsCitation":"Puente, C., Newton, J.G., and Hill, T.J., 1980, Hydrology of selected basins in the Warrior coal field, Alabama — A progress report: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-22, vii, 62 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8022.","productDescription":"vii, 62 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":394841,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35396.htm"},{"id":159124,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0022/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":92274,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","otherGeospatial":"Warrior coal field","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.5467,\n              33.327\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.344,\n              33.327\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.344,\n              33.599\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.5467,\n              33.599\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.5467,\n              33.327\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db602066","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Puente, Celso","contributorId":36140,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Puente","given":"Celso","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201188,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Newton, John G.","contributorId":22323,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Newton","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hill, Thomas J.","contributorId":13270,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hill","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201186,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The monitoring sites are: Susquehanna River at Conowingo, Md.; Potomac River at Washington, D.C.; and James River at Cartersville, Va. Water-quality data collected from October 1978 to April 1980 are presented in tables. Concentrations of major ions, nutrient and carbon species, metals, pesticides, suspended sediment, and other selected constituents are presented for a range of flows. The mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, and median values for each constituent were determined by standard methods and are presented for each sampling station. An integral part of this study will be a simulation of the ground-water flow regime using the Geological Survey's three-dimensional finite-difference model. The first step in the modeling effort is the design and development of a systematic set of processes to facilitate the collection, evaluation, manipulation, and use of large quantities of information. A computerized data-base system to accomplish these goals has been completed for the northern Midwest RASA.
\n
The input to the data-base system consists of either point values or contour maps of the hydrogeologic data required by the model. Digital samples of contoured surfaces are obtained by machine digitization. Uniformly spaced model-node values are then computed from the discrete data by two-dimensional interpolation. The interpolator uses the regional (long wavelength) characteristics of the data to compute a surface with minimum total curvature. Local (short wavelength) data are merged with the regional surface to produce the model-node values at the desired spacing. Nonuniformly spaced nodal values may be obtained by fitting two-dimensional polynomials (bicubic splines) to surfaces formed by uniformly spaced points and solving for the surface values at the node locations. The uniformly or nonuniformly spaced node values constitute the output of the data-base system and in turn are the input arrays of data values for the ground-water flow model.
\n
Management of the data base is facilitated by forming a data file for each model input parameter and for other hydrogeologic data used in the study. The data files are subdivided into elements consisting of individual model-layer arrays. In this form the data base can be readily accessed and edited. In addition to the interpolation programs, software components of the system include programs: (1) to transform geographic coordinates on a Lambert conformal conic projection to cartesian coordinates and vice versa, (2) to machine contour gridded data, (3) to expedite manipulation and editing of data, and (4) to perform various interarray computations.
\n
The data-base system has the following attributes: (1) manual handling of data is minimized and machine handling of data is maximized, (2) given unequally spaced point data over the extent of a study area, model input arrays for any reasonable uniform node spacing can be rapidly computed, (3) accuracy of computed node values are generally compatible with accuracy and spatial distribution of point data, (4) a relatively large class of nonuniformly spaced node configurations can be computed, (5) data within data-base files can be easily accessed and readily edited, and (6) the occurrence of data processing errors at various stages of data-base generation is monitored by machine contouring the computed grids.
\n
Functioning of the data-base system is illustrated by the sequence of steps required to produce a model-input array of transmissivity, given raw geologic and hydraulic conductivity data.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri80104","usgsCitation":"Kontis, A., and Mandle, R.J., 1980, Data-base system for northern Midwest regional aquifer-system analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-104, iv, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri80104.","productDescription":"iv, 23 p.","numberOfPages":"29","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":56941,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0104/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124967,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0104/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db674351","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kontis, A.L.","contributorId":69542,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kontis","given":"A.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199243,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mandle, Richard J.","contributorId":19956,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mandle","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199242,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Water discharge, suspended-sediment discharge, and stream-temperature data were collected at four stations in the basin. The 5-year period included 1 year before construction, 2 years during construction, and 2 years after construction. The effects of stream relocation and sediment-control methods used in the highway construction were also investigated.
\n
During the period of data collection, about 35,500 tons of suspended sediment was transported by Blockhouse Creek and Steam Valley Run. The data indicate that 9,100 tons was introduced to the stream from construction areas. The normal sediment yield for the two basins was determined to be 80 tons per square mile per year. Most of the sediment was transported by the streams during high flows and probably passed through Blockhouse Creek, as little deposition was observed below the construction area. Stream temperature seemed to be relatively unaffected by the stream relocations and diversions.
\n
Stream relocation and diversion methods were successful in limiting the amount of sediment discharged by the new channels. Regional analyses indicate that harmonic-mean temperature is negatively correlated with altitude. No change in specific conductance since 1951 was noted for the Little Snake River; however, specific conductance in the Yampa River has increaed 14 % since that time and is attributed to increased agricultural and municipal use of water. Site-specific relationships between major inorganic constituents and specific conductance for the Little Snake and Yampa Rivers were similar to regional relationships developed from both historic and recent (1975) data. These relationships provide a means for estimating concentrations of major inorganic constituents from specific conductance, which is easily measured. Trace-element and nutrient data collected from August 1975 through September 1976 at 92 sites in the Yampa River basin indicate that water-quality degradation occurred upstream from 3 sites. The degradation resulted from underground drainage from pyritic materials that probably are associated with coal at one site, discharge from powerplant cooling-tower blowdown water at a second site, and runoff from a small watershed containing a gas field at the third site. Ambient concentrations of dissolved and total iron and manganese frequently exceeded proposed Colorado water-quality standards. The concentrations of many dissolved and total trace elements and nutrients were greatest during March 1976. These were associated with larger suspended-sediment concentrations and smaller pH values than at other times of the year. Comparison of results based on 3 years of data to those for the 10 water years, 1957-66, provides an indication of the adequacy of the data obtained during the short period to define the long-term relation between sediment transport and streamflow. During 1909-66, sediment was transported to the entire San Francisco Bay system at an average rate of 8.6 million cubic yards per year. The Sacramento and San Joaquin River basins provided about 83% of the sediment inflow to the system annually during 1957-66 and 86% during 1909-66. About 98% of this inflow was measured or estimated at sediment measuring sites. Measured sediment inflow directly to the bays comprised only about 40% of the total discharged by basins directly tributary to the bays. About 90% of the total sediment discharge to the delta and the bays in the San Francisco Bay system thus was determined on the basis of systematic measurements. A description of model calibration and verification is presented for: (1) A 40.8 acre single-family residential area, (2) a 58.3-acre highway area, (3) a 20.4-acre commercial area, and (4) a 14.7-acre multifamily residential area. Rainfall-runoff data for 80, 108, 114, and 52 storms at sites, 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, were collected, analyzed, and stored on direct-access files. Rainfall and runoff data for these storms (at 1-minute time intervals) were used in flow-modeling simulation analyses. A distributed routing Geological Survey rainfall-runoff model was used to determine rainfall excess and route overland and channel flows at each site. Optimization of soil-moisture- accounting and infiltration parameters was performed during the calibration phases. Based on the calibration, the model is capable of accurately predicting concentrations of carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, total organic nitrogen, total nitrite, and total orthophosphate; predicted concentrations of total ammonia, total nitrate, and dissolved oxygen will be somewhat less accurate. Additional data are needed to determine the model's capability to predict concentrations of coliform bacteria. Potential uses of the model were demonstrated by simulating the effects of different waste water discharges on streamflow quality, using water-quality and stream-discharge data provided by the Pueblo Area Council of Governments. Lake trophic state should be established using a mean annual value of twice monthly observations of chlorophyll a in epilimnetic waters during the open-water season. Actual Trophic State Index (TSI) values for lakes are calculated using the formula: TSI = 77.7 - 27.3 (log annual mean chlorophyll a, in mg/L). In lakes with colors less than or equal to TO platinum-cobalt units, mean annual Secchi disk transparencies may be used for calculation of lake TSI using the formula: TSI = 40.0 + 33.0 (log annual10mean Secchi disk, in meters).

Supplemental information recommended for inclusion in the lake management program should include: morphological, hydrologic, and geologic data; baseline profile water-quality surveys; and benthic invertebrate, vegetation, and cultural surveys. Another recommendation is to change DEP's method of calculating the mean annual runoff for a lake drainage basin to an empirical formula based on drainage area characteristics. This resulted in more accurate estimations of mean annual hydraulic retention times for lakes. Many of these parameters recommended for inclusion in the lake management program will allow comparisons with future surveys to determine the impacts of cultural development on Maine lakes. These systems were tested to evaluate operational and reliability characteristics. Telephone lines were used to relay data in the land-line system, and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and Land satellite (Landsat) were used in the satellite system. The land-line system was tested for 15 months at a streamflow site. Accurate data were obtained 94% of the time during the test period. Data losses were attributed to telephone-line interference, low-battery voltage, and vandalism. The GOES system was tested at a rainfall site for 17 months. During this period, 79% of the transmissions received from the station were relayed by the GOES system to the U.S. Geological Survey computer, resulting in successful processing of 88% of all possible rainfall observations. On the average, seven data transmissions were completed each day. The Landsat system was tested at a rainfall site for about 17 months and for about 8 months at a streamflow site. During these periods of operation, only about 2% of all data observations for the stations were successfully relayed by the Landsat system to the U.S. Geological Survey computer. An average of about three data transmissions was completed each day for each site. The model-computed water levels were within a few feet of the actual annual average water levels and the computed annual average base flow was 66 cubic feet per second compared to the actual base flow of 58 cubic feet per second.

The computer model was used to model transient conditions by simulating water levels and base flow from April through August 1976 and comparing the results with actual data. Evapotranspiration and pumpage changes were made for each month. There was no recharge from precipitation during the test period.

Several different computer simulations were made using different estimates of hydrologic parameters and conditions. Specific yield was increased from 10 to 15 percent which resulted in a much greater base flow for each month. Effective depth of evapotranspiration was changed from 5 to 10 feet which resulted in a very large decrease in base flow. A computer simulation made without irrigation pumpage resulted in an increase in the base flow from 0.66 to 9 cubic feet per second for August 1976 in the Big Sioux River near Brookings. The actual base flow for August 1976 was .01 cubic foot per second.

A water budget showed 22.2 inches of precipitation (average annual), 0.65 inch of surface runoff, 1.06 inches of ground-water outflow (base flow to river, 1970-76), and 20.49 inches of evapotranspiration.

The water from the Big Sioux aquifer is a calcium bicarbonate type and specific conductance ranged from 407 to 1,790 micromhos per centimeter at 25°C. The water is generally very hard, having a mean of 454 milligrams per liter of hardness.

A model simulation using all the pumpage that would be allowed by irrigation permits approved as of February 1979 simulated the withdrawal of 43,900 acre-feet of water for about 4 months during which time there was no recharge from precipitation. If there had been no pumping for that period, evapotranspiration would have been 7,800 acre-feet more than occurred under pumping conditions and discharge to streams would have increased by 3,600 acre-feet.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri80100","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the East Dakota Conservancy Sub-District, the South Dakota Department of Water and Natural Resources, and Brookings and Hamlin counties","usgsCitation":"Koch, N.C., 1980, Appraisal of the water resources of the Big Sioux aquifer, Brookings, Deuel, and Hamlin counties, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-100, vi, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri80100.","productDescription":"vi, 46 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431615,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0100/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157947,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0100/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","county":"Brookings County, Deuel County, Hamlin County","otherGeospatial":"Big Sioux aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.65017839786026,\n              45.50039030863826\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.65017839786026,\n              42.76701195096234\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.41259704622428,\n              42.76701195096234\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.41259704622428,\n              45.50039030863826\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.65017839786026,\n              45.50039030863826\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a54c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Koch, Neil C.","contributorId":64656,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Koch","given":"Neil","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199190,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

When supporting data from water analyses are available, the value of the cementation exponent m can be determined more precisely. Data for this study were taken from logs of oil-test wells, Amstrat sample studies, drill-stem tests and water test wells in parts of Montana, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. The preferred resistivity curves for apparent water resistivity (Rwa) analyses are the deeply focused laterolog and the induction log. The standard electric log can be used if the drilling mud is not saturated with salt. The preferred porosity logs are the sonic, sidewall neutron, compensated neutron, and the density logs. Older, uncalibrated neutron curves can be empirically calibrated in some instances, however, resulting porosities are frequently anomalous when compared to those determined from core or modern logs. When apparent water resistivity is determined for many wells, the data can be plotted and contoured to outline areas of recharge, direction of probable ground-water movement, and location and salinity of brine areas. This report updates a previous report with 2 years of additional data collection and presents statistics and regression equations for water-quality variables. The most apparent feature of the study is the variability of water quality. Time-trend differences are most noticeable, with areal differences being present but more subtle. In comparing stations at the mouths of the five major drainages entering the Yellowstone River from the study area, water from the Powder River ranks near the middle of the group in dissolved-solids concentration (mean of 1,390 mg/L), but far exceeds the other drainages in suspended-sediment concentration, often exceeding 10,000 mg/L. The Tongue River generally has the best overall quality with respect to dissolved constituents; extremes are moderated by mixing in the Tongue River Reservoir. Suspended sediment ranged from 5 to 4,360 mg/L. Rosebud Creek shows about a 50-percent average increase in dissolved-solids concentration from the most upstream station to the mouth. Armells and Sarpy Creeks, smallest of the five drainages, have a pool-riffle configuration that influences both dissolved and suspended constituents. Pools permit greater evaporation, thus increasing dissolved-constituent concentrations. They also act as sediment traps. Overall, water-quality of the Neuse River is satisfactory for most uses. At Clayton, fecal coliform bacteria and nutrient levels are high, but algae and total-organic-carbon data indicate water-quality improvement in recent years, due probably to a new wastewater treatment plant located downstream from Raleigh, N.C. Pollution was determined by subtracting estimated natural loads of constituents from measured total loads. Pollution makes up approximately 50% of the total dissolved material transported by the Neuse. Two different data transformation methods allowed trends to be identified in constituent concentrations. The methods recomputed the concentrations as if they were determined at a constant discharge over the period of record. Although little change since 1956 can be seen in most constituents, large changes in some constituents, such as increases in potassium and sulfate, indicate that the water quality of the Neuse River has noticeably deteriorated. Increases in sulfate are probably largely due to increased long-term inputs of sulfur compounds from airborne pollutants.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8036","usgsCitation":"Harned, D.A., 1980, Water quality of the Neuse River, North Carolina: Variability, pollution loads, and long-term trends: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-36, viii, 88 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8036.","productDescription":"viii, 88 p.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":411009,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35405.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56412,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158981,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0036/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Neuse River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.02490234375,\n              36.421282443649496\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.74499511718749,\n              35.94688293218141\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.970458984375,\n              35.55457449014312\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.69580078125,\n              35.205233347514536\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.92102050781249,\n              34.84085858477277\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.33850097656249,\n              34.551811369170494\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.6241455078125,\n              34.488447837809304\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.08007812499999,\n              34.447688696497444\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.40966796875,\n              34.447688696497444\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.92028808593749,\n              35.460669951495305\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.34326171875,\n              35.80444911191491\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.991455078125,\n              36.16448788632064\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.8651123046875,\n              36.363798554158635\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.63989257812499,\n              36.43012234551576\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.3212890625,\n              36.50522086338427\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.7060546875,\n              36.47872381162464\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.02490234375,\n              36.421282443649496\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f98c3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harned, Douglas A. daharned@usgs.gov","contributorId":1295,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harned","given":"Douglas","email":"daharned@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":198312,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Station records were divided into segments and tested for adequacy of record length and sample size for two physiographic regions. The standard error of estimate for each calibrated regression model, using increasing record lengths, was compared against the longest period of record in both tests. Results of the study indicate that an increase in the length of small-area streamflow records or additional sampling sites in the data network will not substantially improve the standard error of estimate of the regression model. Therefore, it is recommended that the current (1980) crest-stage network be reduced to a sample large enough to measure the long-term trend and provide information for future capabilities in the field of small-streams hydrology. It is also recommended that additional research be carried out to determine additional variables which could be used to predict floodflows and other types of regression models. The study site is on a regional topographic high near the eastern edge of the Missouri Coteau and is underlain by more than 400 feet of glacial drift, largely clayey, silty till. Long-term climatic data indicate the study area is in a water deficient area mean annual evaporation exceeds mean annual precipitation by about 18 inches.

Different methods are being used for comparison of measurements and estimates of each hydrologic component interacting with the lakes and wetlands. For example, for 3 months during 1979, estimates of precipitation for the study site using data collected at National Weather Service stations differed from that measured by a recording gage at the study site by several tenths of an inch for 14-day totals and differed by more than 0.5 inch for individual storms.

Numerical-simulation analysis of regional ground-water flow systems show the study site is situated in a regional recharge area, but local groundwater flow systems can discharge to lakes and wetlands within the recharge area. Instrumentation at the study site shows a complex interrelationship of wetlands and ground water. Based on data for 1979 only, some wetlands appear to recharge ground water, some wetlands are flow-through types where ground water enters one side and surface water seeps into the ground on the other side, and some wetlands are discharge points for ground water. Further, these interrelationships vary throughout the year.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri8099","usgsCitation":"Winter, T.C., and Carr, M.R., 1980, Hydrologic setting of wetlands in the Cottonwood Lake area, Stutsman County, North Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 80-99, vi, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri8099.","productDescription":"vi, 42 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":125109,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0099/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59323,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1980/0099/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota","county":"Stutsman County","otherGeospatial":"Cottonwood Lake","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-99.2669,47.3268],[-98.8466,47.327],[-98.8392,47.327],[-98.8232,47.3272],[-98.8152,47.3271],[-98.4991,47.327],[-98.467,47.3266],[-98.4677,47.2402],[-98.4685,46.9788],[-98.4412,46.9789],[-98.4396,46.6296],[-98.7894,46.6294],[-99.0379,46.6309],[-99.1616,46.6317],[-99.4122,46.6316],[-99.4498,46.6319],[-99.4477,46.8044],[-99.4476,46.9788],[-99.4821,46.9795],[-99.4824,47.0089],[-99.4822,47.0162],[-99.4821,47.0249],[-99.4826,47.0396],[-99.4827,47.1558],[-99.4801,47.3267],[-99.2669,47.3268]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Stutsman\",\"state\":\"ND\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e9ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winter, Thomas C.","contributorId":84736,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winter","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203451,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carr, Mark R.","contributorId":70786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carr","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203450,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
