Sampling was conducted at fixed U.S. Geological Survey stations in South Bay, and at six new stations in Coyote Creek, on 17, 20, 25, 26 September and 3, 10 October 1979. Measured water-quality parameters were: salinity; temperature; turbidity; concentrations of selected dissolved gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ethylene, ethane); concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate); and concentrations of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments, total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci. Rates of oxygen utilization and photosynthetic production were measured at selected stations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791600","usgsCitation":"Cloern, J.E., and Cole, B.E., 1979, Water quality of south San Francisco Bay and Coyote Creek after failure of the San Jose-Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant I. 17 September - 10 October 1979: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1600, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791600.","productDescription":"25 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":429661,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1600/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140209,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1600/report-thumb.PNG"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"south San Francisco Bay and Coyote Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.65629498575782,\n              37.86286754722491\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.65629498575782,\n              37.329760703366645\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.7185733071579,\n              37.329760703366645\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.7185733071579,\n              37.86286754722491\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.65629498575782,\n              37.86286754722491\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f99a4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cloern, James E. 0000-0002-5880-6862 jecloern@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5880-6862","contributorId":1488,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cloern","given":"James","email":"jecloern@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":438,"text":"National Research Program - Western Branch","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":156287,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cole, Brian E.","contributorId":18357,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cole","given":"Brian","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A stratigraphic analyses of the data shows that the largest controlling factor in the depositional history of the shelf has been the Gulf Stream. These currents have shifted back and forth across the shelf, at times incising into shelf sediments, and at all times blocking much of the accumulation of Cenozoic sediments seaward of the Florida-Hatteras Slope. In the southern region the Gulf Stream maintained its present position since Miocene time, blocking the accumulation of Pliocene and younger rocks on the Plateau. Northward, in the middle, region the currents turned slightly to the northeast. The inner portion of the Blake Plateau has been scoured of sediments since the Paleocene in this area, and scouring has also occurred on the shelf from time to time. In the northern part of the survey area a more easterly flow of the Gulf Stream has allowed Eocene and younger rocks to be deposited on the Plateau. Line drawings and a geologic map show the distribution of the various Cretaceous and Cenozoic units. A number of potential environmental hazards or constraints to petroleum development seen in the reflection data are identified. Besides current scour and erosion features, these include gravity faults on the slope, a slump, faulting on the inner Blake Plateau, the shelf edge reef, and deep water reefs on the Blake Plateau.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78800","usgsCitation":"Edsall, D.W., 1979, Southeast Georgia embayment high-resolution seismic-reflection survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-800, 90 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78800.","productDescription":"90 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":430152,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74932.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":36283,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0800/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141787,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0800/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7241","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Edsall, Douglas W.","contributorId":59035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edsall","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The gossan at Hadbah overlies a low-grade nickel-bearing sulfide body, but most of the sulfide lenses are almost devoid of base metals. Supergene alteration of pyrrhotite-pentlandite has given rise, in profile, to a narrow (&lt;5 m thick) zone of violarite-pyrite (or marcasite) beneath an oxide zone (&lt;35 m deep) of goethite-hematite-silica. Geochemical data show that, despite intensive leaching in the upper parts of the profile, the gossans over the nickeliferous sulfides have higher contents of trace metals than do the gossans overlying pyritic bodies. Both hypogene and supergene textures are well preserved in the gossans; in particular, the presence of very fine-grained pentlandite in the primary sulfide assemblage is precisely recorded by diagnostic replica textures in the gossans.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79671","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Directorate General of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Jiddah, Saudi Arabia","usgsCitation":"Blain, C.F., 1979, Mineralization and gossans in the Wadi Wassat-Wadi Qatan region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-671, ii, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79671.","productDescription":"ii, 34 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":403296,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0671/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140693,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0671/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia","otherGeospatial":"Wadi Wassat-Wadi Qatan region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              33.046875,\n              17.392579271057766\n            ],\n            [\n              56.2939453125,\n              17.392579271057766\n            ],\n            [\n              56.2939453125,\n              30.90222470517144\n            ],\n            [\n              33.046875,\n              30.90222470517144\n            ],\n            [\n              33.046875,\n              17.392579271057766\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699ef1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blain, Christopher F.","contributorId":33708,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blain","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156828,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The shallow-water region is discussed in detail by Marlow and others (1979a) in a companion report. The triangular deep-water region lies at the junction of the Bering shelf and the Aleutian Ridge (Fig. 2). This region is bounded on the northeast by the 200 m bathymetric contour that defines the edge of the Bering shelf, on the southeast by a meandering line that lies 3 miles north of the Aleutian Islands, and on the west by the 171°W longitude meridian. The storms of December 3-5 and December 7-10 produced record peak discharges in several areas throughout central and eastern Kentucky, resulting in damages of nearly 50 million dollars and the loss of five lives. This report summarizes data collected during the floods by the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, and other Federal and State agencies in Kentucky. The data include precipitation, streamflow, and water-quality data (including suspended sediment). Estimates of property damages in selected basins are also provided. The purpose of the conference was to acquaint participants in the NAWDEX program with the systems, data resources, and services available throughout the membership, to establish improved personal relationships within the membership, and to serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas and expertise on matters relating to improving the operation of NAWDEX and identifying the needs of the water-data community. Sixteen papers were presented at the conference which describe data systems of member organizations, needs of the data community, and programs of national interest. These papers are published in their entirety in this proceedings volume. Four working panels were also conducted dealing with (1) Program Administration, Management, and Coordination; (2) Recommended Standards for the Handling and Exchange of Water Data; (3) Water Data Indexing and Technical Systems Development; and (4) Request, Response and Service Activities. Several salt bodies of late Quaternary age lie beneath the surface, mostly composed of sodium and potassium carbonate, sulfate, chloride, and borate minerals. Mud layers separate the salt bodies, which contain interstitial brine that is the source of large quantities of industrial chemicals. The value of annual production from the deposit exceeds $30 million; total production to date exceeds $1 billion. \r\n\r\nThe salts and muds were deposited during Pleistocene and Holocene times by a series of large lakes (200 m maximum depth, 1,000 km 2 maximum area) that fluctuated in size in response to climatic change. Salts were deposited during major dry (interpluvial) episodes, muds during wet (pluvial) episodes that correlate with glacial advances in other parts of North America and the world. Data based on cores from the deposit are used in this paper to establish the stratigraphy of the deposit, the chemical and mineral compositions of successive units, and the total quantities of components contained by them. These parameters are then used to determine the geochemical evolution of the sedimentary layers. The results provide a refined basis for reconstructing the limnology of Searles Lake and the regional climate during late Quaternary time. Six main stratigraphic units were distinguished and informally named earlier on the basis of their dominant composition: \r\n\r\n\r\nUnit                               Typical thickness                                 14C age, uncorrected\r\n                                     (in meters)                                            (years B.P.)\r\n\r\nOverburden Mud          7                                                           0 to >3,500\r\nUpper Salt                    15                                                          >3,500 to 10,500\r\nParting Mud                 4                                                           10,500 to 24,000   \r\nLower Salt                   12                                                          24,000 to 32,500\r\nBottom Mud                30                                                          32,500 to 130,000\r\nMixed Layer                200+                                                      > 130,000\r\n\r\n(The age of 130,000 years for the Mixed Layer is based on extrapolated sedimentation rates.) The Lower Salt is subdivided into seven salt units (S-l to S-7) and six mud units (M-2 to M-7), the Mixed Layer into six units (A to F). For each salt unit, the areal extent, volume, shape, mineralogy, and chemical composition of the solids and brines have been determined; for each mud unit (which originally extended over much of the basin), the shape and volume within a standard area, and the mineralogy, have been determined. The bulk compositions (brines plus salts) of the combined Lower Salt units S-l to S-5 and units S-6 and S-7, and the Upper Salt, were determined so that the total quantities and ratios of ions in the initial brines could be reconstructed.  \r\n\r\nThe 74 published HC dates on Searles Lake core samples from all but the oldest unit are supplemented by 14 new dates (determined by Minze Stuiver) on the Lower Salt. Most of the age control comes from dates based on disseminated organic carbon; two dates are on wood; dates on carbonate minerals are less reliable. Although the probable disequilibrium between the carbon in the lake and atmosphere (because of contamination, slow equilibrium rates, and other factors) causes disseminated carbon dates to be an estimated 500-2,500 years 'too old,' the ages of the major and minor units are relatively well established. The list above indicates rounded and uncorrected ages for the contacts of major units. The age of the only salt bed in the Lower Salt which indicates desiccation (S-5) is about 28,000 years. The average uncorrected sedimentation rate in the Parting Mud is 4","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. The gaged watersheds have impervious areas that range from 19 percent for a residential watershed in north Tampa to nearly 100 percent for a downtown Tampa watershed. Land-use types, including roads, residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, recreational , and open space, have been determined for each watershed. Rainfall and storm runoff data collected since 1971 for one site and since 1975 for six other sites through September 1976, have been processed. These data are recorded at 5-minute intervals and are stored in the U. S. Geological Survey WATSTORE unit values file. Daily rainfall at 12 sites and daily pan evaporation at one site have been stored in the WATSTORE daily values file. Measurements of thermal gradient in the upper few tens of meters generally are sufficient to outline the major anomalies, but it is always desirable to combine these gradients with reliable estimates of thermal conductivity to provide data on the energy flux and to constrain models for the heat sources responsible for the observed, near-surface thermal anomalies. The major problems associated with heat-flow measurements in the geothermal exploration mode are concerned with the economics of casing and/or grouting holes, the repeated site visits necessary to obtain equilibrium temperature values, the possible legal liability associated with the disturbance of underground aquifers, the surface hazards presented by pipes protruding from the ground, and the security problems associated with leaving cased holes open for periods of weeks to months. \r\n\r\nWe have developed a technique which provides reliable 'real-time' determinations of temperature, thermal conductivity, and hence, of heat flow during the drilling operation in unconsolidated sediments. A combined temperature, gradient, and thermal conductivity experiment can be carried out, by driving a thin probe through the bit about 1.5 meters into the formation in the time that would otherwise be required for a coring trip. Two or three such experiments over the depth range of, say, 50 to 150 meters provide a high-quality heat-flow determination at costs comparable to those associated with a standard cased 'gradient hole' to comparable depths. The hole can be backfilled and abandoned upon cessation of drilling, thereby eliminating the need for casing, grouting, or repeated site visits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79593","usgsCitation":"Sass, J., Kennelly, J., Wendt, W., Moses, T., and Ziagos, J., 1979, In situ determination of heat flow in unconsolidated sediments: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-593, v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79593.","productDescription":"v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59576,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f41ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sass, J.H.","contributorId":70749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sass","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":204162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kennelly, J.P.","contributorId":16051,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennelly","given":"J.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wendt, W.E.","contributorId":60248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wendt","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Moses, T.H.","contributorId":24344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moses","given":"T.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ziagos, J.P.","contributorId":77931,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ziagos","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204163,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Because the area is within or near the artillery ranges of the U.S. Army, the existing water resources of the study area are almost undeveloped.</p><p>The only surface-water bodies of significance in the study area are Muck Creek, Nisqually Lake, and springs. The flow of Muck Creek as measured at a gaging station at Roy, east of the study area, ranged from no flow to a maximum discharge of 692 cubic feet per second during the period 1956-77. No flow occurred there about 9 percent of the time during the period 19.56-71. A large spring discharged from 0.12 to 4.56 cubic feet per second during the study period.</p><p>Development or diversion of Muck Creek near its mouth would provide sufficient water for a small- to medium-sized fish-rearing facility. The highest water temperature recorded at this site during the study was 14.0°C, in August 1977, with a stream discharge of 7.12 cubic feet per second.</p><p>Nisqually Lake, with a surface area of about 89 acres, is shallow with a flat bottom. The existing lake water is relatively high with dissolved solids, organic nitrogen and phosphorus, and biologically productive. Species of warm-water fish are probably best suited for the lake.</p><p>Ground water beneath the study area occurs in unconsolidated glacial drift or outwash of gravel, sand, silt, and clay. One of the permeable rock units is the Steilacoom Gravel of Pleistocene age. Yields to wells from this material in a nearby area are from 100 to 250 gallons per minute. A digital computer model of these reservoirs and the stream reaches from the reservoirs downstream to the Green River at Calhoun, Ky., was developed to simulate mean daily streamflows. Simulations of 1941 through 1971 water year streamflows were made for both the pre-reservoir and post-reservoir basin conditions, thus supplying homogeneous data sets for low-flow analyses of eight stream sites. The 7-day, 10-year recurrence interval, minimum discharges of the simulated regulated flows exceed those of the simulated natural flows by about 30 cubic feet per second for the Barren River at Bowling Green, Ky., and about 260 cubic feet per second for the Green River at Calhous, Ky. Analyses of the pre-reservoir simulations show that, for seven of the stream sites, the model yields streamflow which have annual minimum 7-day average discharges that are not significantly different, at the 95 percent significance level, from those of the observed flows. Results of the post-reservoir simulations show that actual reservoir operation was not closely matched by the model. Therefore, the low-flow characteristics of the simulated regulated streamflows are merely estimates of those that could be expected if the basin were regulated according to the modeled reservoir operating criteria. The discharge-frequency data and basin characteristics of 220 stream-gaging stations in New York and adjacent States were used in developing multiple linear regression equations for floods ranging in recurrence interval from 2 to 100 years. Separate equations were developed for northern, southeastern, and western New York. Standard errors of estimate of the 100-year flood range from 32.9 percent in the southeastern region to 42.8 percent in the western region. Drainage area is the independent variable needed in all equations; other variables needed, depending on region, are main-channel slope, storage index, and mean annual precipitation. A method is given for obtaining improved discharge-frequency relationships at gaged sites by weighting log-Pearson type III and regression estimates according to their variances. Basin characteristics, log-Pearson type III statistics, and regression and weighted estimates of the frequency-discharge relationship, are tabulated for the gaging stations used in the regression analyses. The model was calibrated using monitoring data for the four basins collected over a 1-year period. A brief evaluation was made of a modified version of the model that simulates quality of urban runoff. Additional monitoring and computer analysis are necessary to calibrate the water-quality portion of the model before it can be used as a management tool in Madison. This study was done in cooperation with the Dane County Regional Planning Commission (DCRPC).</p>\n<p>Tables presenting results of various storm-water-management options are included. Some notable simulation results were that a 25 percent storm-sewer slope reduction yielded only a 3 percent peak-discharge reduction, and increasing storm-sewer roughness by increasing Manning's \"n\" from 0.013 to 0.0^0 decreased peak discharge about 10 to 20 percent. Detention of 10 percent of runoff throughout each basin yielded peak-discharge reductions of about 10 to 20 percent. Infiltration of all parking-lot runoff reduced peak discharges 5 to 2h percent. Peak discharges were reduced by 71 to 88 percent by substituting porous pavement for conventional pavement. Draining 90 percent of the residential rooftops onto lawns instead of driveways reduced peak discharge from 7 to 31 percent. Runoff-volume reduction was similarly reduced for the induced infiltration simulations.</p>\n<p>Storage requirements for hypothetical storm-water-treatment plants ranged from 2.6 to 29 acre-feet for the smallest and largest basins, respectively, with a treatment capacity of 25 cubic feet per second.</p>\n<p>A brief inconclusive evaluation of the water-quality subroutines of the model was made. Close agreement was noted between observed and simulated loads for nitrates, organic nitrogen, total phosphate, and total solids. Ammonia nitrogen and orthophosphate computed by the model ranged 7 to 11 times greater than the observed loads. Observed loads are doubtful because of the sparsity of water-quality data.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791273","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Dane County Planning Commission","usgsCitation":"Grant, R.S., and Goddard, G., 1979, Urban storm-runoff modelling; Madison, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1273, iv, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791273.","productDescription":"iv, 29 p.","numberOfPages":"33","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":142735,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1273/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36823,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1273/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Dane County","city":"Madison","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -89.6044921875,\n 43.041794452901534\n ],\n [\n -89.6044921875,\n 43.18314981723581\n ],\n [\n -89.22683715820312,\n 43.18314981723581\n ],\n [\n -89.22683715820312,\n 43.041794452901534\n ],\n [\n -89.6044921875,\n 43.041794452901534\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4888e4b07f02db51a6c9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grant, R. Equations relating flood magnitude to basin characteristics were developed for exceedance probabilities of 0.5 to 0.01 (2- to 100-year recurrence intervals). Separate equations are presented for four regions: Coast, Willamette, Rogue-Umpqua, and High Cascades. Also presented are values of flood discharges for selected exceedance probabilities and of basin characteristics for all gaging stations used in the analysis. Included are data for 230 stations in Oregon, 6 stations in southwestern Washington, and 3 stations in northwestern California. Drainage areas used in the analysis range from 0.21 to 7,280 square miles. Also included are maximum discharges for all western Oregon stations used in the analysis.
