Data were collected in three canals in Hyde County, three canals in Beaufort County, and in Campbell Creek, which receives drainage directly from two of the Beaufort County canals. Water-control structures were placed on two of the six canals near the beginning of the investigation. Following about 2 years of data collection, control structures were placed on the remaining four canals. Hydrologic and water-quality data are presented for each of the study sites for the period of October 1990 through May 1992. Data presented in this report cover the second phase of the investigation after the installation of water-control structures in the six drainage canals. Following a description of the study sites and data-collection methods, data are presented for five of the drainage canals and Campbell Creek. Data collection was discontinued at one of the Beaufort County sites after the first phase of the investigation. (figs. 1 and 2), for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Included in this letter are brief descriptions of (1) study methods employed in the phase 3 investigation that have not been previously described in earlier reports, and (2) results of the phase 3 investigation as they relate to the results of the previous phases of the investigation. The data from the phase 3 investigation that are presented and described herein were collected during November 1991-January 1992.\r\nThe Galena-Platteville aquifer is the uppermost bedrock aquifer beneath the site. The Glenwood Formation of Ordovician age, a potential confining unit, separates the Galena-Platteville aquifer from the underlying St. Peter Sandstone aquifer (fig. 3). The St. Peter Sandstone aquifer is an important source of ground water to Belvidere and other cities in the region.\r\n\r\nThe phase 3 investigation was done (1) to determine the lithology of the Glenwood Formation; (2) to determine the vertical distribution of horizontal hydraulic conductivity (K) and concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC's) in the upper 150 ft (feet) of the Galena-Platteville aquifer at an existing monitoring location, borehole G127GP (figs. 2 and 3) ; and (3) to confirm the presence or absence of VOC's in the St. Peter Sandstone aquifer at a new monitoring location, well G127SP (figs. 2 and 3). Additional components of the site investigation described in this letter include determination of vertical hydraulic gradients between the Galena-Platteville and St. Peter Sandstone aquifers and in situ measurement of selected water-quality characteristics (pH, temperature, specific conductance, Eh, and dissolved oxygen) in borehole G127GP.\r\n\r\nThe results of the first and second phases of the USGS investigation at the Parson's Casket Hardware site are presented in two previous USGS Open-File Reports prepared for the USEPA (Mills, 1993a, 1993b) . These reports describe the hydrogeology of the study site, principally the Galena-Platteville aquifer, and the distribution of VOC concentrations in the Galena-Platteville aquifer. (The stratigraphic nomenclature used in this report is that of the Illinois State Geological Survey (Willman and others, 1975, p. 47-87) and does not necessarily follow the usage of the USGS. The aquifer nomenclature is that generally used by the Illinois State Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.) The study area included the Fox River and its major tributaries from Wilmot, Wis., downstream to South Elgin, Ill. The measurements were obtained to verify a one-dimensional, unsteady-flow model of the river system.\nUnsteady-flow conditions were created through operation of flow-control structures at Stratton Dam near McHenry, Ill. On November 1, 1990, dam gate openings were decreased to 0.1 foot. Openings remained at 0.1 foot until low flow was established throughout the reach. On November 5, the gate openings were increased to 2.5 feet. The change in gate openings created unsteady-flow conditions by allowing flow through the gates to increase from about 60-80 cubic feet per second to about 1,600 cubic feet per second.\n\nDuring the study period, discharge was computed continuously from stage records with stage-discharge relations at 7 stations on the Fox River and its tributaries; discharge was measured at 15 additional stations in the basin. Stage was recorded continuously at 15 stations in the basin (11 stations on the Fox River and 4 stations on the Fox River tributaries); stage was measured periodically at 8 additional stations on the Fox River.\n\nFluorescent dye was injected continuously at Stratton Dam from November 2-8, 1990, during the unsteady flow to measure time- and space-integrated characteristics of the velocity flow field. Total water withdrawn for public supply in Florida during 1990 averaged 1,925 million gal/day. Public suppliers served 11.23 million residents, in 1990. Groundwater was the source for more than 88 percent (1,699 million gal/day) of public-supply withdrawals and was used by more than 10.0 million residents; surface water was the source of the remaining 12 percent (226 million gal/day) and was used by about 1.2 million residents. The Floridan aquifer system was the source of the majority of groundwater in 1990 (50 percent), followed by the Biscayne aquifer (34 percent). Public-supply water withdrawals peaked in May 1990 at 2,140 million gal/day, primarily because of an increase in the residential demands for lawn irrigation. During 1990, withdrawals for January were lowest (1,870 million gal/day), nearly 270 million gal/day less than in May. Public-supply per capita use for Florida in 1990 was 171 gal/day and domestic (residential) per capita use was 111 gal/day. The population of Florida increased from 9.75 million in 1980 to more than 12.94 million in 1990, and the percentage of the population served by public supply increased from 80 percent in 1980 to 87 percent in 1990. Public-supply water with- drawals in Florida increased 41 percent between 1980 and 1990 even though public supply per capita use has remained fairly consistent since 1980. Public water suppliers in Dade County withdrew the largest amount of water (326 million gal/day) for public supply in the State for 1990 and served nearly 1.88 million people. Water in both aquifer systems typically is of the calcium or calcium magnesium bicarbonate type, but concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfate are greater in water of the Central Basin system; differences in the concentrations are statistically significant. Dissolution of calcite, magnesium-calcite, dolomite, and gypsum are the primary geochemical processes controlling ground-water chemistry in both aquifer systems. Saturation-state calculations using the computer code WATEQF indicated that ground water from the Central Basin system is more saturated with respect to calcite, dolomite, and gypsum than water from the Highland Rim system. Geochemical environments within each aquifer system are somewhat different with respect to dissolution of magnesium-bearing minerals. Water samples from the Highland Rim system had a fairly constant calcium to magnesium molar ratio, implying congruent dissolution of magnesium-bearing minerals, whereas water samples from the Central Basin system had highly variable ratios, implying either incongruent dissolution or heterogeneity in soluble constituents of the aquifer matrix.\r\n\r\nConcentrations of radionuclides in water were low and not greatly different between aquifer systems. Median gross alpha activities were 0.54 picocuries per liter in water from each system; median gross beta activities were 1.1 and 2.3 picocuries per liter in water from the Highland Rim and Central Basin systems, respectively. Radon-222 concentrations were 559 and 422 picocuries per liter, respectively. Concentrations of gross alpha and radium in all samples were substantially less than Tennessee?s maximum permissible levels for community water-supply systems. The data indicated no relations between concentrations of dissolved radionuclides (uranium, radium-226, radium-228, radon-222, gross alpha, and gross beta) and any key indicators of water chemistry, except in water from the Highland Rim system, in which radon-222 was moderately related to pH and weakly related to dissolved magnesium. This facility is operated by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission and produces about 77,000 kilograms of stockable fish annually. Samples of the spring water, surrounding soils, and bottom sediment were collected. Methods used in obtaining all samples are discussed. The PCBs were a contaminant in fuel that was sprayed on vegetation and ignited during defoliation efforts at the Omega Station.\r\n\r\nHaiku Valley is a stream valley eroded into a thick section of dike-intruded, highly permeable lava flows. The valley is partly filled with alluvium, pyroclastics and massive lava flows. A shallow aquifer system is formed by a permeable unit of pyroclastics which is bounded below by less permeable alluvium, massive lava flows, and weathered basalt. A deeper aquifer system is present in the dike-intruded lava flows. Much of the area of suspected PCB-contaminated fuel application in Haiku Valley is situated on the geologic unit that forms the shallow aquifer.\r\n\r\nA water budget calculated for the drainage area of a stream-gaging station (16275000) at the downgradient boundary of the Omega Station indicates that the shallow and deep aquifers receive recharge of 5.1 cubic feet per second from the 0.98 square-mile drainage area; approximately 10 percent of the drainage area is suspected to have been contaminated by PCBs. Approximately 4 cubic feet per second of water is withdrawn from the aquifers by a well and a water tunnel in the valley, but the geology of the area indicates that some of the water withdrawn by the tunnel also comes from recharge beyond the surface-water divides of Haiku Valley. Base flow to the stream is about 1.2 cubic feet per second.\r\n\r\nA water-balance calculation between recharge, well and tunnel withdrawals, and stream base flow, indicates that 1.0 cubic feet per second or more of the water recharging the drainage area may travel through the subsurface and discharge downstream beyond the limits of the Omega Station. Mass-balance calculations indicate that the concentration of PCBs that dissolves in the ground-water as it infiltrates contaminated areas will be on the order of 10-7 micrograms per liter, but these calculations are based on a number of assumptions where data are lacking. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of sediment from Heeia Stream indicates that the sediment is transporting PCBs past station 16275000. Although PCB concentrations in unfiltered stream water samples collected at the station were below detection limits 0.1 micrograms per liter, PCB concentrations ranged from 64 to 230 micrograms per kilogram in suspended sediment extracted from stream water. All significant components of the lake's water budget were determined independently. The lake's trophic state was evaluated in relation to total-phosphorus loading from December 1, 1987 through November 30, 1989. The information obtained in the study can be used by local and State agencies to develop and assess lake- and watershed-management alternatives for maintaining or improving the water quality of the lake.</p>\n<p>The three-basin, 1,900-acre drainage lake receives flow from two main tributary streams, Harder and Rice Creeks. Precipitation, ground-water levels, and streamflow were below normal during the study period and the year preceding the study. Precipitation was 6.09 inches below normal the first year of the study and 8.71 inches the second year.</p>\n<p>Precipitation, the dominant water-budget inflow component, was followed in decreasing order by inflows from Rice Creek, ground water, Harder Creek, and near-lake drainage. Total inflows in the first and second years of the study were 11,040 and 11,650 acre-feet, respectively. Surface inflow was 23 percent greater in the second year of the study than in the first year.</p>\n<p>The largest outflow from Balsam Lake was outflow to Balsam Branch, and the second largest outflow was evaporation. These outflows accounted for 98 percent of outflow from the lake. Recharge to ground water accounted for 2 percent.</p>\n<p>Total-phosphorus input to the lake was 692 and 1,144 pounds in the first and second years of the study. Rice Creek and near-lake drainage accounted for 80 percent of phosphorus entering the lake. Outflow to Balsam Branch removed 30 percent of the phosphorus that entered the lake.</p>\n<p>The main basin of the lake was mesotrophic, whereas the loading rates determined for the study period would have expected to result in oligotrophic conditions. Internal loading and below-normal external loading during the study are the likely explanation for this discrepancy. The northwest basin of the lake (locally called \"Little Balsam Lake\") received 66 percent of all external phosphorus that entered Balsam Lake. The trophic state of Little Balsam Lake ranged from upper mesotrophic to lower eutrophic. The overall objective of each individual project in the program is to determine if the water chemistry in the receiving stream has changed as a result of the implementation of land-management practices in the watershed. This is accomplished through monitoring of water chemistry and ancillary variables before best-management practices (BMP's) are installed ('pre-BMP'), during installation ('transitional'), and after ('post-BMP') watershed- management plans have been completely implemented. Fecal-coliform (FC) counts ranged between 10 and 310,00/100 mL. A large range of values occurred within duplicate and triplicate samples as well as over time. The median percentage difference between duplicate and triplicate samples was 17 percent although 4 out of the total 60 duplicate and triplicate samples had differences greater than 100 percent. A decrease in FC counts generally occurred over the duration of the 4-day analyses. Linear regression models of the log-concentration values (dependent variable) with respect to time (independent variable) were calculated for all samples. Negative slopes were found for 14 of the 15 samples. Slopes varied from +0.5 to -38.4 percent gain/loss/day, with a median slope of -8.5 percent/day. A t-test was applied to the data to examine whether or not significant differences in FC counts exist with respect to holding times. Because the T-test only compares two treatments, the test was conducted 3 times (0 versus 24-hr holding time, 0 versus 48-hr holding time, and 0 versus 72-hr holding time). Setting the level of significance at p less than 0.05 and assuming equal variances, 27 percent (all from Bower and Otter Creeks) of the samples demonstrated a significant difference in colony count over the first 24 hr, 40 percent over 48 hr, and 47 percent over 72 hr. All samples that exhibited a significant change in colony count were because of a decrease in colony count of the sample.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
