These potential hazards are a shallow gas deposit in one proposed lease sale block and shallow faulting (or possible buried slumping) in 16 proposed lease sale blocks.</p><p>Other features considered merely to be developmental constraints can be accommodated by existing standard design and engineering technology. The stream-gaging station was discontinued on July 5, 1933. Daily streamflow records obtained at this site are published in the annual series of Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers beginning in 1925. Monthly and yearly summaries are published in Water-Supply Paper 1312.</p><p>In October 1960, the Geological Survey resumed collection of hydrologic data in the Mountain Creek watershed by establishing three stream-gaging stations and one reservoir-content station. The data-collection sites are on Mountain Creek near Cedar Hill, Walnut Creek near Mansfield, Mountain Creek at Grand Prairie, and Mountain Creek Lake near Grand Prairie (fig. 1). In October 1970, the Geological Survey assumed operation of the stage station Mountain Creek near Duncanville (fig. 1).</p><p>Water-quality data for the 1977 water year for sites in the study area are presented in downstream order along with the streamflow data in the section \"Compilation of data.\" A complete tabulation of data, including laboratory analyses, for the 1977 water year for the Trinity River basin is given in Water resources data for Texas, TX-77-1, 1977.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to compile the records of streamflow and reservoir content for the year into a form which facilitates their use in detailed analyses of the Mountain Creek hydrologic system. This report contains basic-hydrologic data for the 1977 water year (Oct. 1, 1976-Sept. 30, 1977). These include airborne surveys at various elevations and numerous sea surveys. The data have been digitised at approximately one kilometre intervals and the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF epoch 1965.0) removed. The resulting values have been upward continued to a common height of 1.83 km (6000 ft), transferred to a base map and contoured at 100 nT intervals. The map is published in colour by the United States Geological Survey - Saudi Arabian Project.</p><p>The map reveals three distinct zones: (1) large amplitude (approximately 800 nT), short wavelength (15 km peak to trough) anomalies over the axial trough which form lineations roughly parallel to the coastlines, (2) smaller amplitude (approximately 300 nT), longer wavelength (30 km) anomalies over the main trough and shelves which also form lineations parallel to the coastlines, and (3) very variable amplitude (100 to 400 nT), short wavelength (5 to 30 km) anomalies over the shield areas on both sides of the Red Sea. The large, linear anomalies terminate in the north at about 23 °N and in the south at about 15 N. The anomalies over the main trough and shelves converge south of approximately 15.5 N. Several NE trending magnetic features offset the linear, axial anomalies. Such features are confined to zones (1) and (2) and are thought to indicate leaky transform faults.<br></p><p>The interpretation of the magnetic data is presented in three parts: the northern Red Sea (north of 24°N), the central Red Sea (18°N to 24°N) and the southern Red S ea (south of 18 N). For each part, there is a discussion of the extent of oceanic crust, the seafloor spreading history, the possible location of transform faults and the relationship of the magnetic anomalies to the deep holes. In Chapter 7, the results are brought together and their significance for Red Sea floor spreading, transforms and plate geometry discussed. In order to measure the magnitude and rate of this deformation, three networks of precise geodetic control were established in 1977-78, as part of an international agreement between Mexico and the United States. This report gives the background data for one of these survey nets--a local network of precise horizontal control designed to monitor the horizontal component of ground movement in the area of geothermal production. It represents the first year's effort of a 3-year investigation by the U.S. Geological Survey. It is anticipated that the network of horizontal control will become part of the monitoring program of the Mexican Comision Federal de Electricidad (C.F.E.) for periodic surveys.</p><p>Fifty-nine lines of precise horizontal control comprising the Cerro Prieto horizontal-control net were established and measured for the first time during January-March 1978. The net encompasses the area of geothermal interest, and spans many of the active local and regional faults. By repeated measurement of the lines in the network, magnitudes and rates of relative ground movement can be calculated. Surveyed control lines of the net tie stations in the geothermal area to bedrock reference stations on Cerro Prieto volcano and four peaks of the Cucapas Mountains. Thus, measured ground movement in the geothermal area can eventually be correlated with regional changes in western Mexicali Valley. The ANLW site at INEL lies in a shallow topographic depression bounded on the east and south by volcanic rift zones that are the locus of past shield-type basalt volcanism and by rhyolite domes erupted along the ring fracture of an inferred rhyolite caldera. The K-At age data indicate that the ANLW site has been flooded by basalt lava flows at irregular intervals from perhaps a few thousand years to as much as 300,000-400,000 years, with an average recurrence interval between flows of approximately 80,000-100,000 years. The model was calibrated using monitoring data for the four basins collected over a 1-year period. A brief evaluation was made of a modified version of the model that simulates quality of urban runoff. Additional monitoring and computer analysis are necessary to calibrate the water-quality portion of the model before it can be used as a management tool in Madison. This study was done in cooperation with the Dane County Regional Planning Commission (DCRPC).</p>\n<p>Tables presenting results of various storm-water-management options are included. Some notable simulation results were that a 25 percent storm-sewer slope reduction yielded only a 3 percent peak-discharge reduction, and increasing storm-sewer roughness by increasing Manning's \"n\" from 0.013 to 0.0^0 decreased peak discharge about 10 to 20 percent. Detention of 10 percent of runoff throughout each basin yielded peak-discharge reductions of about 10 to 20 percent. Infiltration of all parking-lot runoff reduced peak discharges 5 to 2h percent. Peak discharges were reduced by 71 to 88 percent by substituting porous pavement for conventional pavement. Draining 90 percent of the residential rooftops onto lawns instead of driveways reduced peak discharge from 7 to 31 percent. Runoff-volume reduction was similarly reduced for the induced infiltration simulations.</p>\n<p>Storage requirements for hypothetical storm-water-treatment plants ranged from 2.6 to 29 acre-feet for the smallest and largest basins, respectively, with a treatment capacity of 25 cubic feet per second.</p>\n<p>A brief inconclusive evaluation of the water-quality subroutines of the model was made. Close agreement was noted between observed and simulated loads for nitrates, organic nitrogen, total phosphate, and total solids. Ammonia nitrogen and orthophosphate computed by the model ranged 7 to 11 times greater than the observed loads. This report describes the results of the first year of sampling and analyzing (1) water in the drains , (2) bed material in the drains, (3) water from field tile-drainage lines, and (4) irrigation tailwater and water in the drains directly exposed to drift from aerial application of pesticides. Residues of almost all the pesticides selected for monitoring were found in water in the drains. Examination of the data to determine the probable source of pesticides indicated generally slight concentrations from bed material in the drains, usually no detectable concentrations from field tile-drainage lines, and apparently large concentrations from irrigation tailwater and drift from aerial application. Results of the investigation provide peak-flow data on streams generally with drainage areas less than 50 square miles, placing particular emphasis on those with drainage areas less than 10 square miles. Basin parameters being investigated for their effect on floods are drainage area, length of main stream, slope of main channel, basin altitude, forest cover, and storage area. All the 163 gaging stations included in the report are equipped with crest-stage gages, and 10 stations are equipped to record stage and precipitation continuously. The relative magnitude of flood flows for different hydrologic regions is shown in graphs that relate maximum discharge to drainage area. Station records contain location, drainage area, records available, type of gage, on-site structure elevations, bankfull stage, and annual maximum stage and discharge data. An additional objective was the collection of continuous streamflow and temperature data at selected sites for development of a thermal model for use as a guide in design and management of a small reservoir. The quantity of surface water during low-flow varies considerably throughout the basin. Streamflow during periods of drought is groundwater discharging through numerous springs and seeps. The average 3-day, 20-year low-flow of the six study sites range from 0.1 to 2.2 cubic feet per second. Seepage investigations in October 1976 show that as much as 4.4 cubic feet per second are lost from the Sulphur Fork Red River within a reach of 1.7 miles between river mile 30.8 and 29.1. Seepage investigations in July 1977 show that as much as 3.7 cubic feet per second are gained in the Sulphur Fork Red River within a reach of 0.8 miles between river mile 42.6 and 41.8. Measured discharges from the 12 major springs in the basin ranged from less than 1 to 1660 gallons per minute during low-flow. Water quality of streams varies in time and space. Specific conductance ranged from 200 to 1,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25O centigrade during the 1976 seepage investigation on the Sulphur Fork Red River. The northern boundary of the area is the divide between the Androscoggin River drainage basin on the north and the Saco, Presumpscot, and Royal River drainage basins on the south. The western boundary is the Maine-New Hampshire State line, and the southwestern boundary is the Little Ossipee River. The southeastern boundary is the mid-latitude of the Gray and Freeport 15-minute topographic quadrangles. The greatest part of the area is in Cumberland and Oxford Counties, a smaller area is in York County, and a small fraction is in Androscoggin County. Included are parts or all of 15 towns in Cumberland County, 15 towns in Oxford County, 5 towns in York County, and 2 towns in Androscoggin County.</p><p>The report contains geologic and hydrologic data collected as part of an investigation of the surficial geology and ground-water resources made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Maine Public Utilities Commission. These data are made available for use in planning the development of natural resources. Flow in this reach of the Chattahoochee is continuous but highly regulated by Buford Dam, a flood-control and hydroelectric facility located near Buford, Ga. Calibration and verification utilized two sets of data collected under highly unsteady discharge conditions. Existing solution techniques, with certain minor improvements, were applied to verify the existing technology of flow and transport modeling. \r\n\r\nThe linear, implicit finite-difference flow model was calibrated by use of a depth profile obtained at steady low flow and unsteady flow data obtained in March 1976. During the calibration period, the model was generally able to reproduce observed stages to within 0.15 m and discharges at less than 100 m 3 /s, to within 5 percent. Peak discharges of about 200 m 3 /s were under-estimated by about 20 percent. During the verification period, October 1975, the flow model reproduced observed stage changes to within about 0.15 m, and its timing and over-all performance was considered to be very good. \r\n\r\nDye was added to the upstream end of the river reach at a constant rate while the river flow was highly unsteady. The numerical solution of either the conservative or nonconservative form of the mass-transport equation did an excellent job of simulating the observed concentrations of dye in the river. \r\n\r\nThe temperature model was capable of predicting temperature changes through this reach of as large as 5.8?C with a RMS (root-mean-square) error of 0.32?C in October 1975 and 0.20?C in March 1976. \r\n\r\nHydropulsation has a significant effect on the water temperature below Buford Dam. These effects are very complicated because they are quite dependent on the timing of the release with respect to both the time of day and past releases.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Incoming solar and atmospheric radiation, windspeed and direction, water temperature, and wet- and dry-bulb air temperatures were recorded at 10-minute intervals at each end of the 26-kilometer concrete-lined canal, while flow-rates and stages were determined at hourly intervals for five locations. Although only daily averaged values are presented in this report, all information necessary for the use and interpretation of these data are presented. Windspeeds were minimum during the early morning hours and maximum during the late afternoon; however, they were variable spatially.
