Hydrologic investigations in Kansas during fiscal year 1978 consisted of collecting and analyzing data to assess the State 's water resources, describe the framework of hydrologic systems , and provide quantity and quality of water data for optimum development and management. Surface-water studies were made to analyze long-term records of streamflow, basin and stream-channel characteristics, relations of rainfall and runoff , frequency of low flows and floods, interrelation of ground and surface water, and the effects of stream regulation on the quantity, quality, and availability of water supplies. Geohydrologic studies were made to determine the source, availability, quantity, and quality of water in the principal aquifers; evaluate long-range effects of irrigation, industrial, and municipal withdrawals; determine the potential for storage of liquid wastes; and prepare digital models for evaluating plans of aquifer development and management. Water-quality studies were made to define the physical, chemical, and biological character of surface and ground water; the origin transport, and character of solutes and sediment in streams; the areal and temporal changes in water quality; and the suitability of water for municipal, industrial and agricultural use.

Pumping tests were made on April 14 and 15, 1978, and 10 injection tests were made between May 12 and June 30, 1978.
Selected tests were monitored in order to obtain data which could be used to assess the effects of subsurface disposal on the ground water in the basal aquifer. Pumping and injection rates were measured. Basal-water head responses to pumping and injection were observed at the prototype well and at two observation wells located 435 and 6 ,100 feet from the prototype well. Water-quality samples were collected at the prototype well and the nearest observation well prior to testing. Samples of the injection water, as well as samples from the observation wells, were collected prior to and after the final test.
The head data and water-quality data are presented in this report.

The relation between raw materials, energy and ingenuity is such that use of a large amount of one may offset the need for large amounts of others. The most vital raw materials are water, soil, and construction materials, for these are needed in large quantities and are hard to import. Metals, chemicals, and inanimate energy are necessary for industrialization. The more of these minerals a nation possess, the better, but not nation can hope to be self-sufficient in all of the m and therefore must trade for some essential materials.
\nJordan’s natural resources have been little explored. The grantitc-metamorphic terrane in the southeastern part of the Kingdom could contain deposits of tungsten, rare earths, feldspar, mica, fluorite etc. and the sedimentary terrane over much of the rest of the county is favorable for the occurrence of oil. Even if none of these minerals is found, however, Jordan’s other mineral resource, if fully explored and developed in the light of modern technology, will support a far higher level of living than her people now enjoy. Very likely she can increase her rainfall by about 10 percent by cloud seeding, and she undeveloped supplies in both surface and ground water that are sufficient to nearly double her usable water supply. Even if she does not have oil or have it in large quantities, she can buy it cheaply from neighboring counties, and in addition has undeveloped sources of hydroelectric power, large reserves of bituminous limestone, large reserves of nuclear power as uranium in phosphate rock, and can use solar and wind power for special purposes. Her large supplies of construction, fertilizer, and other chemical raw materials will not only satisfy her own needs, but will yield both raw materials and some manufactured products for export. And she has valuable resource of touristic interest in the form of incomparable scenery, antiquities, and holy places, which, if properly advertised, could well become her largest single source of foreign currency. Revenues obtained from this source and from the export of agricultural products, nonmetallic minerals, and mineral products should support foreign oil purchase of oil, machinery, and other products not mined or produced internally.
\nFull development of Jordan’s economic potential will take years to achieve and involves many complex activities. One of the most essential is one that can be pressed in the early years, namely the gathering of facts and basic data concerning the character, extent, and distribution of her resources, and the uses that can be made of them. Without each fundamental data or the understanding of their meaning or the ways to use and apply them, costly developmental projects and similar efforts to raise the level of living are likely to have limited success at best.
\nBasic data and mineral resources are best gathered and published by permanent government agencies, for private organizations and individual cannot afford to take the risks involved in gathering data that may not have an immediate economic return; and even if private parties do collect such data they are not likely to make them general available.
\nOf the activities needed in the field of mineral resources, some are already underway as the established function of government agencies. No bureau however, seems to have responsibility for making geologic maps and for gathering data on such things as steam flow, composition and properties of minerals and rocks, or for investigating the uses to which Jordan’s minerals might be put. To satisfy these needs, a Geological Survey and a Bureau of Mineral Industries should be formed and placed in operation as quickly as possible.
\nThe task of collecting and interpreting basic data or mineral resources must be done largely by Jordanians, for only in this way will Jordan acquire the technical competence needed to use the information. Few Jordanians have enough training or experience to work independently in these fields now, however, so help from outside technicians would be necessary over an initial training period of several years. But the number of outside technicians should never exceed the number of Jordanian technicians, and for this reason, neither organization could have a staff of more than a few people during the early years of operation.

distribution and abundance of antimony (Sb) and niobium (Nb) in -80 mesh (177 micrometers) stream sediment samples in the Chandalar quadrangle, Alaska. The map is one of a series of geochemical maps that together with the background information circular (Reiser and others, 1978) comprise the folio on the Chandalar quadrangle, Alaska. The data are plotted on a subdued base map showing the generalized geology, topography, and sample localities. Map symbols showing the ranges of metal values are indicated on the accompanying histograms and all values shown are considered anomalous. An explanation of sampling, preparation, analytical procedures, and geochemical raw data for all samples are discussed by O'Leary and others (1976). The -80 mesh (177 micrometers) stream sediment medium was used in this study because, given the rather restrictive time and manpower constraints, this sample medium combined with panned concentrates were determined to be the most economical and adequate media in this area of the north-central Brooks Range where clastic sediments are derived from local bedrock.
The study area is generally one of high relief with short fast moving streams and broad glacial valleys. All samples were taken from active streams, as close to the center channel as possible. All sediments were considered to be locally derived. Care was taken, when sampling an obviously glaciated terrane, to sample above or upstream from morainal material, wherever possible. Most samples were taken in areas where bedrock was within 30 m of the sample site.
Due to the high limit of determination for antimony by spectrographic analysis (100 parts per million), all samples collected in 1975 for this study were analyzed for antimony by the atomic absorption method. Spectrographic antimony values for samples collected prior to this study were not used. Most of these previously collected samples are from the area between the North Fork and the Middle Fork of the Chandalar River and south of the Squaw Lake-Grove Creek Valley in the central part of the quadrangle and are discussed by Brosge and Reiser, 1970, 1972.

The investigations spanned several years when precipitation was below normal in most of southern California.
\nSurface-water records were collected for a 6-year period at 21 sites, and continuous precipitation records were obtained at four sites. Ground-water levels were tabulated from historical data at selected wells for 1941, 1968, and 1970. Water quality was monitored at several wells in the valley, and sediment data were collected at three surface-water gages. There was little increase in urbanization during the investigation.

Southeast Minnesota and Southwest Wisconsin","docAbstract":"Intense storms of July 1978 caused floods of historical significance in southeast Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin. Local, State, and Federal officials need data and information to evaluate, coordinate, and manage programs concerned with floods and flood losses. Because of a need to document stream discharges, elevations, and sediment concentrations, current-meter and indirect measurements were made at 34 gaging stations during or immediately after the floods. This report summarizes some of the hydrologic data collected. Peak discharges of record occurred at 20 gaging stations. Frequency of peak discharge equaled or exceeded the 100-year recurrence interval at 11 stations. The Federal Benchmark gaging station on the North Fork Whitewater River was destroyed. Five people died as a result of the floods, and property damages were estimated to exceed $114 million. Thirty-three counties were officially declared disaster areas.

hydrographs of the ' probable maximum flood ' and the ' standard project flood ' of Jamesville Reservoir, as defined by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The inflow and outflow discharges of the probable maximum flood were computed to be 23,600 and 23,100 cubic feet per second, respectively, and of the standard project flood, 9,400 and 8,800 cubic feet per second, respectively. A rating curve computed for the dam spillway indicates that water-surface elevations produced at the dam by runoff from both the standard project flood and the maximum probable flood would be above the top of the spillway abutments. The 10- and 100-year peak discharges at the Butternut Creek gaging station were computed by the HEC-1 program of the Corps of Engineers to be 2 ,160 and 3,450 cubic feet, respectively, as compared to 1,680 and 2,810 cubic feet per second computed by a log-Pearson type III analysis of the station data. The HEC-1 values are within the 5- and 95-percent confidence limits of the log-Pearson type III values. The ilmenites are somewhat unusual for their high contents of MnO. Most of the titanium in these hybrid granitoid rocks is contained in biotite and sphene.

Its primary objective is to assist users of water data in the identification, location, and acquistion of useful data. NAWDEX is coordinated by a central Program Office, located within the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, which provides data-exchange policy and guidelines to all participants in the program. In addition to the Program Office, there is a network of Assistance Centers located in 45 States and Puerto Rico which provides direct access to NAWDEX. Membership in NAWDEX is voluntary and open to any water-oriented organization that wishes to participate. This publication contains an alphabetical listing, by author, of the reports that have been produced by the NAWDEX Program Office since 1975, as well as reports from other sources that relate to the development of the NAWDEX program. The peak discharge on July 6 was 30,500 cubic feet per second compared with 19,600 cubic feet per second for the flood of March 1965, which was the largest previously known. The 1965 flood had a recurrence interval of about 30 years, whereas the 1978 flood had a recurrence interval exceeding 100 years. The flood waters claimed at least 5 lives and 5,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Millions of dollars in flood damage was reported, and this report summarizes some of the flood data and a photomosaic map shows the inundated area.

The Soil Conservation Service is installing a network (SNOTEL) of 46 automated snowpack monitors. The 665 water samples collected were analyzed for major cations and anions. Of the samples, 516 were from wells and 149 were from springs. About 10 percent of the samples were also analyzed for trace constituents and radiochemistry. The majority of analyses were performed by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology laboratory in Butte, Montana. The remaining analyses, including all trace constituent and radiochemical analyses, were performed by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Laboratory in Denver, Colorado.
