Approximately 1,000 of the lakes are listed by 7.5-minute quadrangle topographic-map name, lake-identification number, latitude and longitude, and county. Other data given are shape of lake, maximum length, mean width, length and development of shoreline, surface area, orientation, presence of a stream inlet or outlet, and geologic data (geologic formation of area surrounding the lake and the mined coal-bed member). Field data (sampling date, pH, specific conductance, apparent color of lake, and general vegetation along the shoreline) were collected for 287 of the lakes.\r\n\r\nTwo hundred eighty-seven lakes were sampled once for pH and specific conductance. Vegetation along the shoreline and apparent color of each lake were identified at the same time. Although these data are not sufficient to quantify the water quality of the lakes, they do illustrate the variability of these characteristics. The pH of the 287 lakes ranged from 2.5 to 10.0; however, the pH of 80 percent of them ranged from 6 to 9. Specific conductance ranged from 99 to 3,800 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius. Specific conductance for approximately 70 percent of the lakes in the Staunton and Brazil formations was less than 500 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius, but for approximately 65 percent in the Dugger and Petersburg Formations it was greater than 1,000 micromhos per centimeter at 25? Celsius. The apparent colors of the lakes observed were varying shades of aqua, blue, brown, lime green, red, and green. Eighty percent of the lakes sampled were green.\r\n\r\nLake sizes ranged from a chosen minimum of 0.5 acre to a maximum of 344 acres. Annually, inputs from precipitation, surface runoff, and groundwater inflow are approximately equal (31, 34, and 35 percent, respectively). Outputs include outflow from the lake into Murphy Creek (70 percent), evapotranspiration from the lake and wetland (26 percent), and ground-water outflow (4 percent).</p>\n<p>The inputs and outputs vary seasonally. In months when snowmelt occurs, surface runoff is a major input (56 percent in March; 46 percent in April). In fall and winter ground-water inflow is a major input (57 percent in November). Precipitation comprises 41 percent of the input in August but only 18 percent in January. Lake outflow is the major output except from July through September. Combined evaporation and evapotranspiration is a major output in summer (45 to 58 percent) but minor in winter (less than 13 percent). Ground-water outflow is a small part of the budget each month, ranging from 2 percent in March and April to a maximum of 7 percent in September.</p>\n<p>The water budget is based on field data collected from January 1972 through June 1973, and on fragmentary data and estimates for July 1973 through September 1977. The budget terms differ from those published by Oakes, Hendrickson, and Zuehls (1975, table 10) because springflow has been included in total ground-water inflow and estimated on a monthly basis in this report. Bretz and Shurr compared this vegetation density map with published and unpublished data primarily of the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Dakota Geological Survey; good correspondence is seen between this map and existing geologic maps, especially with the soils map. We believe that this Landsat ratio image can be used as a tool to refine existing maps of surficial geology and bedrock, where bedrock is exposed, and to improve mapping accuracy in areas of poor exposure common in South Dakota. (fig. 1). These soundings were made to assist in a regional evaluation of the geothermal potential of the Ennis Hot Springs area.</p><p>Scalar resistivities from the data log (table 1) are indicative of thermal water altering the Quaternary alluvium to the southeast. The alteration extends over an area of 1.5 km by 4 km. The geothermal system is probably along a north-south range fault between the Precambrian gneiss and the Tertiary gravels. The scalar resistivities also indicate a northwest trend that may be an intersecting fault. Climatic and prior growth factors in regression explained 87 and 71 percent of the variance of the preditching and postditching earlywood widths, respectively, and 82 and 7O percent of the latewood widths for the same time periods. Early summer precipitation was significantly, and positively, correlated with preditching latewood growth. When pre and postditching records were merged into a single record, regression analysis explained less growth variation than when the two time periods were considered individually, implying a change in growth response following ditching. Prior to ditching, growth was most limited by dry summers which followed dry summers. After ditching, growth was less strongly linked with precipitation and more strongly linked with temperature. These rocks form a single aquifer system because the formations are hydraulically connected through contact, mine workings, faulting, and fracturing. The aquifer is recharged by precipitation and water moves toward California Gulch and probably toward Evans Gulch, in the drainage basin of the Arkansas River. The Leadville drainage tunnel was constructed from 1943 to 1945 and later extended during 1950 to 1952, in order to drain the mine workings. Discharge from the tunnel lowered water levels 30 to 96 feet in mine shafts from 1944 to 1951. Installation of an impervious plug in the tunnel has been proposed in order to reduce the discharge of water containing objectionable concentrations of trace metals into the East Fork Arkansas River. The proposed plug would reduce the discharge from the tunnel, cause water levels east of the town of Leadville to rise, flood some mine workings, and increase ground-water discharge to California Gulch. However, the proposed plug is not expected to cause water levels in Leadville to rise substantially, but more current and detailed data are needed to verify this. Discharge from the Leadville drainage tunnel is probably a mixture of water in equilibrium with carbonate aquifer materials from the mineralized zone, water acidified by the localized oxidation of pyrite from the mineralized zone, and water nearly saturated with calcite from the glacial mantle. Based on limited data, water from the carbonate mineral deposits has a pH of about 7.0 and concentrations of manganese of about 1,800 micrograms per liter and zinc concentrations of about 13,000 micrograms per liter. Uranium occurs there as roll-type deposits in Tertiary sandstones. Alteration of the host sandstones related to the formation of the uranium deposits, is marked at the surface by a pronounced red coloration, which has long been used in the area as a prospecting guide. This report presents a characterization of alteration in the Crooks Gap area based upon (1) field observations of the extent and appearance of the alteration at the surface, (2) determination of the mineralogy and spectral reflectance characteristics of representative samples of altered and unaltered material in the laboratory, and (3) analysis of Landsat data of selected areas of altered and unaltered rocks. \r\n\r\nLaboratory spectrophot6metric data show that fresh, red-colored, altered rock has a strong absorption at 0.35 and 0.5 micrometers and a marked rise in reflectivity from 0.7 to 1.6 micrometers; weathered, red-colored, altered rock and Triassic red beds both show strong spectral absorption near 0.35 micrometers but have a relatively flat response from 0.7 to 1.6 micrometers. Landsat radiance values, simulated from the laboratory data, show that both altered rock and Triassic red beds are indicated by a high red-to-green ratio. This is in good agreement with actual satellite data over these rock types. At this time, Lower Granite Reservoir and Lock facilities, constructed by the USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers), Walla Walla District, became operational. Construction and operation of this facility necessitated collection of hydrologic data that did not exist prior to construction. The USACE requested the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to collect hydraulic- and channel-geometry data and describe sediment-transport characteristics, beginning in the spring of 1972.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This report summarizes information collected during August 1976 through July 1978 and is the fifth in a series of reports designed to release hydrologic data on a timely basis. Although some of the data were collected during the late summer and fall periods (August through December) of 1976 and 1977, most were collected during the spring runoff periods of 1977 and 1978. Therefore, for convenience, data contained in this report will be referred to as the 1977-78 data. Because this is primarily a basic-data report, no interpretation of the data is provided.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This report presents tables of selected data collected and computations compiled since the 1976 report (Seitz, 1976). Most of the tabular data are also presented on graphs. Some of the graphs show plots of data since 1972~ others show plots of only the 1977-78 data.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Relatively minor amounts of bedload were transported during the 1977 drought period. Therefore, regular scheduled sampling of the bedload was impractical. Only two bedload samples were collected from the Clearwater River in 1977. The resultant data are included in tables 10, 12, and 14, and figure 6. All bedload data in this report should be considered tentative, pending completion of sampler-calibration studies and possible adjustment of the data to\ncorrect for sampler efficiency.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>An analysis of the middle Snake River streamflow record was made during 1977. The streamflow rating for the Snake River near Anatone, Washington, gage was found to be in error at high stages. The streamflow record for water years 1974 and 1975 was revised and published with 1976 water-year data (Water Resources Data for Idaho, Water Year 1976). The revised Snake River near Anatone streamflow rating was used to recompute the sediment-discharge rating curve (fig. 3).</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This study program is funded by the USACE through a cooperative agreement with the USGS. All field work, laboratory analysis, and compilation of data are being conducted by the USGS.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Data collection is scheduled to terminate at the end of the 1979 runoff season. Data from more than 20 aquifer tests were reanalyzed by the Hantush modified method, which takes into account leakance from all confining units. Transmissivity values range from 20,000 to 240,000 square feet per day. Leakance was estimated to be 2.5x10 to the minus 6th power and 3.3x10 to the minus 5th power per day for the upper and lower confining units, respectively. Families of steady-state distance-drawdown curves were constructed for three representative transmissivity values based on hypothetical withdrawals from a point source ranging from 5 to 50 million gallons per day. Transient effects were not considered because the system reaches steady-state conditions within the time ranges considered. Drawdown at any point can be estimated by summing the effects of any hypothetical configuration of pumping centers. The accuracy of the parameters was checked by comparing calculated drawdowns in selected observation wells to measured water-level declines. A feature of the analysis, differing from techniques used for previous editions of the national chart, is that analytic models define the regional magnetic field and are used to contour the magnetic charts.\r\n\r\nAn overall rms (root mean square) fit of less than 235 nT was obtained for the horizontal and vertical intensities; for the chart of magnetic declination, the rms deviation was on the order of 0.5 degrees. Bottom material samples were also collected and analyzed for chemical quality. Results of the analyses show that the water system was dilute; specific conductance ranged from 32 to 111 micromhos. Blue-green algae, particularly <i>Oscillatoria</i>, were the most common phytoplankton in the samples. Differences in water quality, shown particularly by concentrations of nutrients and dissolved solids, were detected between samples collected in different areas of the park. Estimates of flow duration were made at the 11 gaging stations. Also, low-flow discharge measurements are listed for 16 miscellaneous sites where insufficient data were available to estimate low-flow characteristics.</p>\n<p>Four equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and partial-record stations to basin characteristics. Drainage area and base-flow index were the most significant parameters for these analyses.</p>\n<p>The standard error of estimate of the 7-day, 10-year low flow was provided. The average SE-j f iQ in the basin ranged from 10 to 64 percent and was dependent on the amount of low-flow data available.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Lee conducted a transit line from Honolulu, Hawaii to the big island of Hawaii during the cruise L9-78-HW.</p><p>The navigational track is shown in plate 1 and the three types of data collected (3.5 khz. and 12 khz. bathymetry plus single channel seismic reflection) are shown in plate 2.</p><p>The bathymetry records are 400 fathoms (one second sweep) collected by hull mounted transducers. The seismic reflection profiles are from a 148in<sup>3</sup>. Bolt Association Airgun* as energy source with reflectors transmitted via single channel streamer towed approximately 500 feet behind ship.</p><p>Copies of the data may be obtained from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Boulder, Colorado 80303.</p><p>*Use of commercial names does not imply endorsement by the U.S.
