Also included are data for 96 crest-stage, and 89 water-quality partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites not involved in the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses. The major aspects of the study are the characterization of the surface-water and groundwater hydrology and water quality, including the trace-metal content of the peat. Data will be collected to construct two- and three-dimensional digital models to simulate the movement of ground water and its relation to surface water in the peatlands, streams, and lakes. The inflow and outflow discharges of the probable maximum flood were computed to be 23,600 and 23,100 cubic feet per second, respectively, and of the standard project flood, 9,400 and 8,800 cubic feet per second, respectively. A rating curve computed for the dam spillway indicates that water-surface elevations produced at the dam by runoff from both the standard project flood and the maximum probable flood would be above the top of the spillway abutments. The 10- and 100-year peak discharges at the Butternut Creek gaging station were computed by the HEC-1 program of the Corps of Engineers to be 2 ,160 and 3,450 cubic feet, respectively, as compared to 1,680 and 2,810 cubic feet per second computed by a log-Pearson type III analysis of the station data. The HEC-1 values are within the 5- and 95-percent confidence limits of the log-Pearson type III values. Barometric pressure, air temperature, wind speed, soil temperature, soil moisture, relative humidity, and precipitation were also monitored. The helium variation below a 1-m sampling depth usually did not exceed the analytical sensitivity limit of +10 ppb helium. The meteorological parameters that had the greatest effect on the helium variation is wind speed and precipitation; another factor causing variations was the atmospheric pumping created by air-temperature changes and its associated effect on the near-surface soil moisture content. The absolute helium variation rarely exceeded 1 percent of the background helium concentration in air. This minor variation could be corrected because it followed a regular daily pattern. Samples were collected over the period 1969-1976 at approximately six-week intervals at 36 stations. The stations were located along the axis of the Bay from Calaveras Point in South San Francisco Bay to the town of Rio Vista on the Sacramento River. On most cruises vertical profiles of the water properties were taken at 12 of the 36 stations. The samples were analyzed for the following core parameters: salinity, temperature, light transmission, chlorophyll a fluorescence, dissolved oxygen, orthophosphate, nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, ammonia, and silicate. Other analyses performed on selected samples included: particulate organic carbon, alkalinity, pH, pCO<sub>2</sub>, and suspended particulate weight. Also included are descriptions of Cretaceous and/or Tertiary lavas of the Yemen Volcanics, Miocene(?) alkali granite, Pliocene caprock of the Guma salt dome, and late Pleistocene and Holocene basalts of the Aden Volcanic Series (?). The petrographic studies permitted the selection of 11 samples of rock for future use in obtaining isotopic analyses for age determinations. Analyses of these rock specimens for trace amounts of gold, indium, mercury, selenium, and thallium completed the geochemical studies. Results of these analyses are interpreted to show that regional geochemical exploration should be undertaken for base and precious metals near Jibal Hufash, the Manakhah area, the region around Al Bayda, the Sa'dah-Majadh area, and the Wadi Jawf area. Some of the major regional gravity anomalies were outlined by Thiel, Ostenso, Bonini (1960), and additional anomalies were defined by pre- and post-earthquake gravity studies reported by Barnes and Allen (1965) and Case, Barnes, Plafker, and Robbins (1966). Another gravity anomaly map was prepared by personnel of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) (Wood, 1966, p. 131; Rice, 1969, p. 5-20). Anomalies shown by Rice (1969) are broadly similar to those shown by Case, Barnes, Plafker, and Robbins (1966); Rice's interpretations concerned mainly gravity changed related to the earthquake, and the data were not interpreted in terms of regional geology. New gravity stations were established in 1976 as part of the mineral resource appraisal of the Seward and Blying Sound quadrangles. This report incorporates the new data obtained in 1976, reinterprets some anomalies previously discussed by Case, Barnes, Plafker, and Robbins (1966), and interprets other anomalies not previously discussed. Descriptions of the major rock units and structural features are found in the companion report by Tysdal and Case (in press). Background details of the regional geology and major structures are described in a companion report by Tysdal and Case (1979), and interpretation of the gravity data are described in a report by Case and others (1979). Preliminary reports of a paleomagnetic investigation have been reported by Hillhouse and Gromme (1977), and a more complete analysis of the results is in preparation. The aeromagnetic survey was flown at a nominal height of 300 m above the surface and flight lines were spaced about 1.7 km apart. Total magnetic field was measured by a proton-precession magnetometer. The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF), updated to 1976, was removed, and the residual values were computer-contoured to produce the aeromagnetic map (sheet 1). Detailed aeromagnetic maps at scale 1:63,360 and a map at scale 1:250,000 have been released as Open File Reports 78-1080 through 1083 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1978).&nbsp;</p><p>Magnetic anomalies in the Seward-Blying Sound region are somewhat less complex than in other parts of south-central Alaska, primarily because of the huge volume of relatively nonmagnetic flysch that constitutes the Valdez and Orca Groups. Several rather isolated groups of mafic-ultramafic rocks are significantly more magnetic than the flysch assemblages, and cause distinctive patterns of magnetic anomalies. The purpose of this project was to monitor the seismicity near the active volcanoes Pacaya and Fuego bait the seismic stations were well situated to record several thousand aftershocks from the magnitude 7.5 (Ms) Guatemalan earthquake of February 4, 1976. The monitoring systems that have been developed are compatible with standard monitoring systems such as snow, stream, and rain gages; wind, temperature and humidity measuring instruments; tiltmeters and seismic event counters. Supported by appropriate power, radios and antennae, remote stations can be left unattended for at least 1 year and consistently relay local information via polar orbiting or geostationary satellites. These data, in conjunction with timely Landsat images, can provide a basis for more accurate estimates on snowfall, water runoff, reservoir level changes, flooding, drought effects, and vegetation trends and may be of help in forecasting volcanic eruptions. These types of information are critical for resource inventory and development, especially in developing countries where remote regions are commonly difficult to access. \r\n\r\nThis paper introduces the reader to the systems available, describes their features and limitations, and provides suggestions on how to employ them. GNAP calculates ClPW norms, Thornton and Tuttle's differentiation index, Barth's cations, Niggli values and values for variables defined by the user. Calculated values can be displayed graphically in X-Y plots or ternary diagrams. Plotting can be done on a line printer or Calcomp plotter with either weight percent or mole percent data. Modifications in the original program give the user some control over normative calculations for each sample. The number of user-defined variables that can be created from the data has been increased from ten to fifteen. Plotting and calculations can be based on the original data, data adjusted to sum to 100 percent, or data adjusted to sum to 100 percent without water. Analyses for which norms were previously not computable are now computed with footnotes that show excesses or deficiencies in oxides (or volatiles) not accounted for by the norm. Data from more than 20 aquifer tests were reanalyzed by the Hantush modified method, which takes into account leakance from all confining units. Transmissivity values range from 20,000 to 240,000 square feet per day. Leakance was estimated to be 2.5x10 to the minus 6th power and 3.3x10 to the minus 5th power per day for the upper and lower confining units, respectively. Families of steady-state distance-drawdown curves were constructed for three representative transmissivity values based on hypothetical withdrawals from a point source ranging from 5 to 50 million gallons per day. Transient effects were not considered because the system reaches steady-state conditions within the time ranges considered. Drawdown at any point can be estimated by summing the effects of any hypothetical configuration of pumping centers. The accuracy of the parameters was checked by comparing calculated drawdowns in selected observation wells to measured water-level declines.
