The prime purpose of the cruise was to obtain vibracores at selected locations across the Continental Shelf. The samples and seismic profiles were collected to study the origin and possible geologic hazards of a broad sedimentary terrace that lies just south of the Hudson Channel.
Information about the cruise can be obtained from Dr. Harley J. Knebel, U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole, Massachusetts 02543. The original records are on file at the U.S. Geological Survey's Data Library in Woods Hole. Microfilm copies of the seismic profiles may be purchased from the National Geophysical and Solar Terrestrial Data Center (NGSDC), in Boulder, Colorado 80302.

magnetic charts of the United States for Epoch 1975","docAbstract":"Approximately 24,000 measurements taken from 1900 to 1974 were analyzed by least-squares methods to produce a series of five magnetic charts of the United States for 1975. A feature of the analysis, differing from techniques used for previous editions of the national chart, is that analytic models define the regional magnetic field and are used to contour the magnetic charts.\r\n\r\nAn overall rms (root mean square) fit of less than 235 nT was obtained for the horizontal and vertical intensities; for the chart of magnetic declination, the rms deviation was on the order of 0.5 degrees. Water levels in the principal artesian aquifer underwent a long-term decline during the period 1969-78. In some areas water levels dropped more than 10 feet. Wells tapping the Clayton Limestone in the Albany area showed a long-term decline during the period 1969-78, and in some wells water levels dropped more than 20 feet. Water levels in the Cretaceous aquifer system showed little fluctuation during 1978; however, in a well located in Chattahoochee County, water levels declined 4.4 feet during 1969-78. In the Piedmont area mean water levels remained the same to 2.2 feet lower in 1978 than in 1977, and showed no long-term trend. Chloride concentrations in the principal artesian aquifer in the Savannah area remained stable and in the Brunswick area continued to rise during 1978. Daily mean water-level fluctuations and trends for 1978 and fluctuations of the monthly mean water level for the previous 10 years are shown in hydrographs of 33 selected observation wells in Georgia. Chloride concentrations in 11 wells in the Savannah and Brunswick areas are shown in graphs of monthly values over the previous 10 years. A short narrative explains fluctuations and trends in each of the hydrographs and chloride concentration graphs shown. The purpose of this project was to monitor the seismicity near the active volcanoes Pacaya and Fuego bait the seismic stations were well situated to record several thousand aftershocks from the magnitude 7.5 (Ms) Guatemalan earthquake of February 4, 1976. This catalog contains hypocentral data on 1560 of these events from selected time frames between February 5 and June 30, 1976.

Metal analyses included arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, zinc, selenium, and mercury. Physical data collected included water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, discharge, and size of cobbles and fine stream-bottom material. Additional chemical analyses included major constituents. Benthic invertebrate identifications were generally taken to the generic level, with a total of 49 taxons identified and quantified. A total of 36 periphyton taxons were quantified and identified, generally at the species level.

Drill hole UE25a-1 penetrated thick sequences of nonwelded to densely welded ash-flow and bedded tuffs of Tertiary age. Stratigraphic units that were identified from the drill-hole data include the Tiva Canyon and Topopah Spring Members of the Paintbrush Tuff, tuffaceous beds of Calico Hills, and the Prow Pass and Bullfrog Members of the Crater Flat Tuff. \r\n\r\nStructural analysis of the core indicated densely welded zones to be highly fractured. Many fractures show near-vertical inclinations and are commonly coated with secondary silica, manganese and iron oxides, and calcite. Five fault zones were recognized, most of which occurred in the Topopah Spring Member. Shear fractures commonly show oblique-slip movement and some suggest a sizable component of lateral compression. \r\n\r\nGraphic logs are included that show the correlation of lithology, structural properties, and geophysical logs. Data from more than 20 aquifer tests were reanalyzed by the Hantush modified method, which takes into account leakance from all confining units. Transmissivity values range from 20,000 to 240,000 square feet per day. Leakance was estimated to be 2.5x10 to the minus 6th power and 3.3x10 to the minus 5th power per day for the upper and lower confining units, respectively. Families of steady-state distance-drawdown curves were constructed for three representative transmissivity values based on hypothetical withdrawals from a point source ranging from 5 to 50 million gallons per day. Transient effects were not considered because the system reaches steady-state conditions within the time ranges considered. Drawdown at any point can be estimated by summing the effects of any hypothetical configuration of pumping centers. The accuracy of the parameters was checked by comparing calculated drawdowns in selected observation wells to measured water-level declines. Eleven surveyed stream channel cross sections were established in the Mill Creek drainage basin, Del Norte County, California in the summer of 1974. All cross-sections have been resurveyed at least annually since they were established. All work was done in cooperation with the National Park Service.
Data tabulated in this report summarize changes at cross sections since release of previous reports. Data from the Redwood Creek cross sections are tabulated for the following periods: initiation of observation to summer 1978, summer 1975 to summer 1976, and summer 1977 to summer 1978. Data from the Redwood Creek tributary cross sections are tabulated for various periods between 1974 and 1978. Data from the Mill Creek cross sections are presented for the period of summer of 1975 to summer 1978. Thirteen figures are included to aid in understanding the tabulated data.

At that time I was engaged in a study of the Coconino Sandstone of Arizona's Grand Canyon. Considerable controversy existed then as to whether this sandstone was a subaqueous deposit or was composed of wind-formed dunes. It became apparent that definitive literature was sparse or lacking on types of dunes, global distribution of these types, the mechanics of their development, the precise nature of their internal structure of cross-stratificiation, and the relation of wind systems to these sand forms. Especially lacking were data on criteria that could confidently be used in the recognition of ancient dunes.
The common denominator in this publication is eolian sand bodies. Although the book is concerned primarily with desert sand seas, the subject matter is not restricted to deserts; it includes many references to deposits of coastal sand and to sand bodies in humid climates. Nor does the book deal exclusively with dunes, which, according to most definitions, involve mounds or hills. Many references are made to sand sheets, sand stringers, and other types of sand deposits that have no prominent topographic expression. All sand bodies accumulated by the action of wind are discussed.
Chapters A-J of this publication are primarily topical. Chapters cover the grain texture, the color, and the structure of modern dunes and other eolian sands. Special treatment is given to the relation of wind data to dune interpretation, the evolution of form in current-deposited sand bodies as determined from experimental studies, and the discriminant analysis technique for differentiating between coastal and inland desert sands. This topical part of the publication also includes an analysis of criteria used in ancient deposits to interpret their eolian genesis and a consideration of economic application of the principles described, including a discussion of potentials and problems associated with eolian hydrocarbon reservoirs. The final chapters present a discussion of the morphology and distribution of dunes as determined largely from Landsat images.
Chapter K of the publication is devoted to descriptions of major sand seas based largely on thematic maps derived from Landsat (ERTS) mosaics. Although inclusion herein of the actual mosaics proved to be impractical, the maps derived from them do show the distribution and abundance of various dune types and the relations of these types to certain associated features, such as bedrock, water bodies, and juxtaposed dunes. Furthermore, sand roses included with each of these maps enable the user to draw conclusions on the probable relations of wind strength and direction to dune type in a particular area.
Regional studies (chapter K) were a team effort. Analysis of the Landsat (ERTS) mosaics and mapping boundaries of individual dune types were by Carol Breed. Synthesis of the rather voluminous literature and preparation of abstracts covering it was by Camilla MacCauley. Actual preparation of maps was by Franci Lennartz and later by Sarah Andrews. The gathering of data on wind, the calculation of wind roses, and the interpretation of their relations to sand bodies were by Steven Fryberger, assisted by Gary Dean.

\nLow-flow characteristics were estimated for 11 gaging stations, 25 low-flow partial-record stations, and 207 miscellaneous sites in the basin. Estimates of flow duration were made at the 11 gaging stations. Also, low-flow discharge measurements are listed for 16 miscellaneous sites where insufficient data were available to estimate low-flow characteristics.
\nFour equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and partial-record stations to basin characteristics. Drainage area and base-flow index were the most significant parameters for these analyses.
\nThe standard error of estimate of the 7-day, 10-year low flow was provided. The average SE-j f iQ in the basin ranged from 10 to 64 percent and was dependent on the amount of low-flow data available.

for Idaho","docAbstract":"A ground water quality monitoring network is proposed for Idaho. The network comprises 565 sites, 8 of which will require construction of new wells. Frequencies of sampling at the different sites are assigned at quarterly, semiannual, annual, and 5 years. Selected characteristics of the water will be monitored by both laboratory- and field-analysis methods. The network is designed to: (1) Enable water managers to keep abreast of the general quality of the State 's ground water, and (2) serve as a warning system for undesirable changes in ground-water quality. Data were compiled for hydrogeologic conditions, ground-water quality, cultural elements, and pollution sources. A ' hydrologic unit priority index ' is used to rank 84 hydrologic units (river basins or segments of river basins) of the State for monitoring according to pollution potential. Emphasis for selection of monitoring sites is placed on the 15 highest ranked units. The potential for pollution is greatest in areas of privately owned agricultural land. Other areas of pollution potential are residential development, mining and related processes, and hazardous waste disposal. Data are given for laboratory and field analyses, number of site visits, manpower, subsistence, and mileage, from which costs for implementing the network can be estimated. Suggestions are made for data storage and retrieval and for reporting changes in water quality.

Most samples were taken within the Telluride, Colo., city limits during October 1978. Twenty-four of the 38 groundwater samples (63%) contained more than 50 micrograms per liter of hexavalent chromium. Excluding the mill tailings pond 6 of the 23 surface-water samples (26%) contained more than 50 micrograms per liter of hexavalent chromium. Hexavalent chromium concentrations in groundwaters ranged from 0 to 2700 micrograms per liter and in surface waters from 0 to 160 micrograms per liter.
