This summary of references is designed to aid in library research on metallic and nonmetallic (other than mineral fuels and construction materials) mineral occurrences in the Bering Glacier, Icy Bay, Middleton Island, and Yakutat quadrangles, Alaska. References to most reports of the Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, and State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys released before June 1, 1979, are included. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on geochemical anomalies and on many prospects and claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, some of those in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77-169A)). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgment on my part that the prospects and claims are not valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposits that might be present.

This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references in the first section and in these introductory paragraphs.

Measurements of the sediment load of the Tanana River in the vicinity of Fairbanks, Alaska, show that suspended-sediment transport rate in tons per day, relates to water discharge, in cubic feet per second, as: Suspended-sediment transport rate (tons/day) = 5.717 x 10 to the minus 8th power x water discharge (cubic feet/second) to the 2.713 power, (where the correlation coefficient squared = 0.967). The bedload-transport rate is approximately 1 to 2 prcent of the suspended-sediment transport rate. Data collected at Fairbanks and upstream from Fairbanks near North Pole, Alaska, show little difference in size distribution of suspended sediment between the two locations. The median particle size distribution of suspended sediment is generally in the silt range, but at some low-water discharges, the median particle size is in the very fine sand range. The median particle size is in the very fine sand range. The median particle size of bedload near Noth Pole is generally in the gravel range, but at some low transport rates, the median particle size is in the medium sand range. At Fairbanks, data collected in 1977 indicate median particle sizes of bedload comparable to those of the upstream location, whereas data collected in 1978 indicate a marked decrease in median particle size of bedload between the two locations. For both locations and at all water discharges and sediment transport rates, particles constituting the suspended load are significantly smaller than particles constituting the bedload.

Data showing results of 38 groundwater and 25 surface-water samples analyzed for hexavalent chromium are presented. Most samples were taken within the Telluride, Colo., city limits during October 1978. Twenty-four of the 38 groundwater samples (63%) contained more than 50 micrograms per liter of hexavalent chromium. Excluding the mill tailings pond 6 of the 23 surface-water samples (26%) contained more than 50 micrograms per liter of hexavalent chromium. Hexavalent chromium concentrations in groundwaters ranged from 0 to 2700 micrograms per liter and in surface waters from 0 to 160 micrograms per liter.

A study of Pequea Creek included measurement of streamflow and collection of water and bottom-material samples during selected base-flow and storm periods from February to December 1977. Samples were analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus species, suspended sediment, organic carbon, and pesticides. Daily mean constituent concentrations and discharges transported from the basin were computed for a gaging station near the mouth. Intermittent constituent mean concentrations and discharges were computed for storms at the six subbasin sites.

The objective of this project was to assess the magnitudes and types of nonpoint discharges that affect the water quality of Pequea Creek. The project included the determination of (1) the total discharges of suspended sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus from the basin; (2) intermittent storm and base-flow discharges from six subbasin sites of varying size, geology, and land use; (3) the difference in magnitudes of the discharges during base-flow periods and storms; and (4) which variables most affect the transport of these constituents.

The yields measured from the Pequea Creek basin for the period February to December 1977 were among the highest measured in the lower Susquehanna River basin. Some preliminary relations between constituents were examined using linear regression techniques on all of the data for each site. Direct runoff transported the majority of the suspended sediment, total phosphorus, and suspended organic carbon from the basin; the other constituents were transported mainly during base flow. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the biennial and annual reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many prospects and claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, many of those in Condon, 1965 (1-453) and some in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF-77-169A), p. 15). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement on my part that the prospects and claims are not valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposits that might be present.

This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of references arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, claim names, and the names of operators and owners of mines and prospects; and a section that lists, by author, all references in the first section and in these introductory paragraphs.

The storm of August 27-28, 1977, in southwestern Oklahoma, shown on the map in figure 1, resulted in extensive inundation of property and damages estimated at close to $1 million (National Weather Service, 1977).

Major flooding occurred on Blue Beaver and West Cache Creeks and their tributaries in Comanche County near the communities of Cache and Faxon, Oklahoma. The area studied extends from the confluence of Blue Beaver and West Cache Creeks near Faxon, north to U.S. Highway 62 at Cache, Peak discharges at selected points along major streams in the area were computed and compared to estimated flood frequencies. Observed highwater marks were used to establish flood profiles and to map flooded areas . Rainfall amounts for the storm and depth-duration- frequency data for the area are included. Knowledge of the seismicity of the west coast of Saudi Arabia is vitally important to the Kingdom. The eastern margin of the Red Sea, which includes all of the west coast of Saudi Arabia, is possibly cut by transform faults that may be capable of producing earthquakes large enough to cause damage in the heavily populated areas or in the industrial complexes under construction. Prior to this study, there were no seismic stations in Saudi Arabia and no studies of microearthquake activity. It was generally assumed that there were no active faults along the west coast. During the period 20 January to 22 February, 1978, five portable seismic stations were deployed in the Tihamat Asir in the southwest part of the country. A significant level of microearthquake activity was detected at a location that approximately coincides with the landward extension of the proposed transform fault. The recording of these earthquakes demonstrates that there are active faults at this location, probably associated with the currently active Red Sea tectonic system. The practical significance of these earthquakes cannot be evaluated from the few data available, and further studies should be undertaken to determine if there are significant seismic hazards along the west coast of Saudi Arabia.

Peat is being considered for fuel in Minnesota. This study will investigate the potential effects of large-scale surface mining of peat on the hydrology and water quality of Upper Red Lake and the Tamarac River. The major aspects of the study are the characterization of the surface-water and groundwater hydrology and water quality, including the trace-metal content of the peat. Data will be collected to construct two- and three-dimensional digital models to simulate the movement of ground water and its relation to surface water in the peatlands, streams, and lakes. After the model is calibrated with field data, it will be used to evaluate the effect of mining peat on the hydrology and water quality of the Upper Red Lake and Tamarac River.

This 5/6 ratio image is produced digitally calculating the ratios of the bands 5 and 6 of the Landsat data and then color coding these ratios in an image. Bretz and Shurr compared this vegetation density map with published and unpublished data primarily of the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Dakota Geological Survey; good correspondence is seen between this map and existing geologic maps, especially with the soils map. We believe that this Landsat ratio image can be used as a tool to refine existing maps of surficial geology and bedrock, where bedrock is exposed, and to improve mapping accuracy in areas of poor exposure common in South Dakota. This report represents a joint effort by the OSMS, CDMG and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The report summarizes all strong-motion accelerograph records recovered from the August 6, 1979 Coyote Lake earthquake. The majority of accelerograms were recorded at stations operated by the OSMS-CDMG and USGS; the latter organization operates a network of instruments that belong to various federal agencies. Documentation of strong-motion data for the Coyote Lake earthquake best serves the scientific community if presented as a single data set.

Reasonable precautions have been taken to ensure the accuracy of the material presented; however, the preliminary nature of the report makes it subject to change upon further verification. Measurements and scalings of the accelerograms are not recommended for use in detailed studies because of possible photo copy distortions during reproduction. A report on the processed data from close-in stations is in preparation and will be issued in the near future.

A systematic program to collect water-level records in Oklahoma began in 1937. The objectives of this program are (1) to provide long-term records of water-level fluctuations in representative wells, (2) to facilitate the prediction of water-level trends and indicate future availability of ground-water supplies, and (3) to provide information for use in basic research.

Water-level data in table 1 are from wells that are measured annually, prior to the irrigation season, to achieve the most natural representation of the static water level. Water-level measurements listed in the column under 1976 may have been made during December 1975 or January, February, March, April, or May, 1976. Measurements listed in the column 1977 may have been made during December 1976 or January, February, March, or April 1977. Figure 1 shows the counties and number of wells therein, where data were obtained for this report.

Records of water levels in Oklahoma are collected through a cooperative program by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Water Resources Board. The records are tabulated and published by the U.S. Geological Survey on an annual basis.

The stratigraphic nomenclature and age determinations used in this report are those accepted by the Oklahoma Geological Survey and do not necessarily agree with those of the U.S. Geological Survey except for the Cheyenne Sandstone which is considered to be Purgatoire Sandstone by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (Robert 0. Fay, Personal Communication, August 9, 1979).

The diurnal variation in the soil-gas helium concentration was monitored at depths of 0.5-2 m. Barometric pressure, air temperature, wind speed, soil temperature, soil moisture, relative humidity, and precipitation were also monitored. The helium variation below a 1-m sampling depth usually did not exceed the analytical sensitivity limit of +10 ppb helium. The meteorological parameters that had the greatest effect on the helium variation is wind speed and precipitation; another factor causing variations was the atmospheric pumping created by air-temperature changes and its associated effect on the near-surface soil moisture content. The absolute helium variation rarely exceeded 1 percent of the background helium concentration in air. This minor variation could be corrected because it followed a regular daily pattern. Diurnal changes in the soil-gas helium concentration did not impose any severe limitations on the use of helium soil-gas data collected for earthquake prediction purposes.

The triangular-notch, thin-plate weir is a convenient, inexpensive, and relatively precise flow-measuring instrument. It is frequently used to measure the flow of water in laboratories and in small, natural streams. The purpose of this report is to present a comprehensive analysis of the discharge characteristics of triangular-notch weirs. Previously-published data are analyzed in the light of the effective-head concept, and a new discharge formula is proposed. Coefficients are recommended, and requirements for precise measurements are described. Limits of applicability are discussed. The report includes an extensive review of the literature of triangular-notch weirs.

Major and trace element data from San Francisco Mountain (a stratovolcano), as well as major element data from representative flows of the surrounding volcanic field (figure 1), are presented in this report. Also included are conventional and normalized partition coefficients for trace elements in each of the coexisting mineral phases and mesostasis from San Francisco Mountain lavas.

The San Francisco Mountain lavas are from the upper portion of the southeast slope of Humphreys Peak which is composed of three petrographically distinct types: (1) a lower series of hornblende pyroxene andesites, (2) a middle group of hypersthene dacites, and (3) an upper series of olivine andesites. The sequence of volcanic flows was measured and analyzed for the major elements and fifteen trace elements Sc, V, Cr, Cq Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, and Yb) in each of the coexisting mineral phases, groundmass and bulk rock. The constituent mineral phases (not all are present in every sample) are plagioclase, hypersthene, augite, hornblende, olivine, magnetite, and ilmenite/hematite.
