These potential hazards are a shallow gas deposit in one proposed lease sale block and shallow faulting (or possible buried slumping) in 16 proposed lease sale blocks.</p><p>Other features considered merely to be developmental constraints can be accommodated by existing standard design and engineering technology. These include airborne surveys at various elevations and numerous sea surveys. The data have been digitised at approximately one kilometre intervals and the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF epoch 1965.0) removed. The resulting values have been upward continued to a common height of 1.83 km (6000 ft), transferred to a base map and contoured at 100 nT intervals. The map is published in colour by the United States Geological Survey - Saudi Arabian Project.</p><p>The map reveals three distinct zones: (1) large amplitude (approximately 800 nT), short wavelength (15 km peak to trough) anomalies over the axial trough which form lineations roughly parallel to the coastlines, (2) smaller amplitude (approximately 300 nT), longer wavelength (30 km) anomalies over the main trough and shelves which also form lineations parallel to the coastlines, and (3) very variable amplitude (100 to 400 nT), short wavelength (5 to 30 km) anomalies over the shield areas on both sides of the Red Sea. The large, linear anomalies terminate in the north at about 23 °N and in the south at about 15 N. The anomalies over the main trough and shelves converge south of approximately 15.5 N. Several NE trending magnetic features offset the linear, axial anomalies. Such features are confined to zones (1) and (2) and are thought to indicate leaky transform faults.<br></p><p>The interpretation of the magnetic data is presented in three parts: the northern Red Sea (north of 24°N), the central Red Sea (18°N to 24°N) and the southern Red S ea (south of 18 N). For each part, there is a discussion of the extent of oceanic crust, the seafloor spreading history, the possible location of transform faults and the relationship of the magnetic anomalies to the deep holes. In Chapter 7, the results are brought together and their significance for Red Sea floor spreading, transforms and plate geometry discussed. Multiple-regression equations relating peak discharge magnitude and frequency to climatic and physical characteristics of 260 gaged basins were determined in order to estimate average recurrence interval of floods at ungaged sites. These equations are for 1.25-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, and 50-year average recurrence intervals. In this report, Alaska was divided into two regions, one having a maritime climate with fall and winter rains and floods, the other having spring and summer floods of a variety or combinations of causes. Average standard errors of the six multiple-regression equations for these two regions were 48 and 74 percent, respectively. Maximum recorded floods at more than 400 sites throughout Alaska are tabulated. Maps showing lines of equal intensity of the principal climatic variables found to be significant (mean annual precipitation and mean minimum January temperature), and location of the 260 sites used in the multiple-regression analyses are included. Little flood data have been collected in western and arctic Alaska, and the predictive equations are therefore less reliable for those areas. Simulated water-resources use in the basin included private development of ground water for irrigation, Federal development of surface-water systems for irrigation, and development of ground water to supply municipal demands of Lincoln and Omaha.</p><p>Simulated future conditions indicate that significant permanent declines in ground-water levels and streamflows may occur as a result of private development of ground water for irrigation. The largest simulated declines in ground-water levels were more than 80 feet by the year 2020 in upland areas in the Elkhorn and Middle Platte subbasins under conditions of rapid development of all irrigable lands. Simulated depletion of perennial streamflows by ground-water withdrawals indicated that future surface-water supplies may be limited in parts of the basin. Simulated depletions to major streams exceeded 60 percent of average perennial flow in the Elkhorn subbasin under conditions of rapid private development of ground water for irrigation.</p><p>Simulations that evaluated the effects of combined private groundwater development with proposed Federal development of surface water for irrigation showed that in the project areas, ground-water level declines were reduced compared to \"without project\" conditions. In some project areas, simulated ground-water levels rose with the application of surface water in excess of consumptive-use requirements and soil-moisture storage capacities. The report summarizes and evaluates the water-quality data that have been collected during the first 2 years (3 years for 1 station) of network operation. Big Dry Creek, Little Dry Creek, Timber Creek , and Nelson Creek are the principal streams forming the Big Dry Creek basin, which is tributary to the Missouri River. These streams all contain water of the sodium sulfate type. Concentrations were high for dissolved solids (433-4,570 mg/L) and generally low for nutrients and trace elements. Prairie Elk Creek, Sand Creek, and the Redwater River flow directly into the Missouri River. Prairie Elk and Sand Creeks have mainly sodium bicarbonate water, whereas the Redwater River is predominately sodium sulfate water. All three streams contained water of high dissolved-solids concentration (160-3,370 mg/L) and generally low nutrient and trace-element concentrations. Burns Creek is tributary to the Yellowstone River. The water type is generally sodium sulfate during the spring and summer and sodium bicarbonate during the fall and winter. Water from Burns Creek ranged from 382 to 1,420 mg/L dissolved solids. An alternative is needed to the empirical stage-fall-discharge computational method, which provides only daily mean discharges and requires frequent measurement over a 25- to 26-hour period of the tide-affected flow. Measurement of tide-affected flow involves use of a cable suspended across the river; this presents a hazardous navigational condition. Use of the model does not eliminate the hazardous navigational problem, but it significantly reduces the time that this condition exists. The model has demonstrated that it can provide reliable daily mean as well as instantaneous discharge data. The model also has the capability of providing discharge data for locations farther downstream in the tidal zone from the Sacramento stream gage; this is not possible with the stage-fall-discharge computational method. The model was calibrated for six streamflow stations </span><span>located in these basins using 4 years of historical and current rainfall, </span><span>runoff, and estimated evapotranspiration data. Watersheds modeled range </span><span>in size from about 70 to 650 square miles. </span></p><p><span>Calibrations were evaluated by comparing the following synthesized and observed data: annual hydrographs for the 1959, 1960, 1973 and 1974 water years, flood hydrographs (maximum daily discharge and flood volume), and long-term annual flood-peak discharges (1950-72). </span></p><p><span>Annual hydrographs, excluding the 1973 water year, were compared using average absolute error in annual runoff and daily flows and correlation coefficients of monthly and daily flows. For stations used in the study, average absolute errors in simulated runoff range from 9 to 21 percent and errors in daily flows range from 48 to 71 percent. Correlation coefficients for monthly flows range from 0.81 to 0.95 and correlation coefficients for daily flows range from 0.68 to 0.87. </span></p><p><span>Correlation coefficients for simulated and observed maximum daily discharges and flood volumes used for calibration range from 0.91 to 0.98 and average standard errors of estimate range from 18 to 45 percent. Cor-relation coefficients for simulated and observed annual flood-peak dis-charges range from 0.60 to 0.74 and average standard errors of estimate range from 33 to 44 percent. The number of flood events used for calibration varies for each streamflow station, but range from 6 to 18. Several Paleogene nonmarine arkosic sandstone units fringe and in part occur within the complex crystalline core. The early to middle Eocene Chuckanut Formation is present on the west side of the crystalline core in the western foothills of the Cascades. The early to middle Eocene Swauk Formation partially encircles the Mt. Stuart massif of the central Cascades. In the western foothills of the Cascades, between the main body of Chuckanut Formation near Bellingham and the main outcrop area of the Swauk Formation south of Mt. Stuart, many smaller bodies of arkosic sandstone have variously been referred to either the Swauk or Chuckanut Formations. The early Eocene Manastash Formation occurs locally in an area south of the Yakima River. The middle to late Eocene Chumstick Formation is mostly confined to the Chiwaukum graben within the crystalline core and is separated from the Swauk Formation on the southwest by the Leavenworth Fault. The Oligocene Wenatchee Formation unconformably over lies the Chumstick Formation near Wenatchee. The middle to late Eocene Roslyn Formation crops out north of the Yakima River and is underlain by the Teanaway Basalt which separates the Roslyn from the older Swauk Formation. The middle Eocene to early Oligocene Naches Formation forms a north-trending body that crosses the Yakima River and is in fault contact with both the Swauk and Manastash Formations. The middle to late Eocene Puget Group underlies the Quaternary deposits of the Puget Lowland southeast of Seattle on the western flank of the Cascades.\r\n\r\nThe various formations are all composed predominantly of fine- to medium-grained sandstones with lesser amounts of interbedded shale, conglomerate and coal. Compositionally, the units are predominantly either feldspathic or litho-feldspathic subquartzose sandstones. Volcanic rocks are important constituents of the Puget Group, the \r\nChumstick and Naches Formations, and the isolated arkosic bodies. The three older units, however, contain relatively less volcanic lithics to total lithics than do younger units, indicating perhaps the initiation of more widespread volcanic activity in middle Eocene time. Ratios of framework grain parameters show that the terrestrial sandstone units were derived from a mixed plutonic and tectonic source terrane of continental block tectonic provenance with an overprint of magmatic arc provenance. \r\n\r\nModal analysis was performed on samples from the various sedimentary units to establish petrologic compositions, and to provide data with which to compare the different units and discuss clast provenance and tectonic regimen. Although the arkosic sandstones have generally uniform framework clast compositions, minor yet significant differences do exist between the units. Basal or basement-onlap portions of the units in particular are locally derived and differ markedly from the overall compositions of the individual units. Many coincidences of composition, age, structure, and bedrock indicate that the Chuckanut and Swauk may have originally been deposited as a single unit that since has been offset approximately 160 kilometers by right lateral strike slip motion starting about 48 Ma. Abundant stream runoff and the prospects for expanded well-field development in the Jap Creek alluvial fan, as well as other similar fans, allow a selection of future water sources based on factors other than the availability of the natural resource. Although water in both streams and deep aquifers is of good potable quality, ground water has the inherent advantages of being free of suspended sediment, of being warmer during winter months, and of being less vulnerable to pollution. The survey was limited to water depths between 100 m and 1000 m with seismic lines spaced from 7.5 to 18.5 km apart in a reconnaissance grid pattern.
