Future demands for water require that these deeply buried rocks be studied to describe hydrologic properties and ground-water-flow conditions and to provide information that will serve as the basis for decisions concerning the protection and the management of the water resources contained therein, Toward this end, the U.S. Geological Survey, as a part of its Central Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (CMRASA), began a 5-year hydrologic investigation of this regional flow system in Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas (Jorgensen and Signor, 1981).
This chapter is one of nine contained in Hydrologic Investigations Atlas HA-722, which present a description of the physical framework (Chapters B-F) and the geohydrology (Chapters G-I} of principal aquifers and confining systems in Upper Cambrian through Lower Cretaceous rocks in Kansas; the stratigraphic relations of these geohydrologic systems are discussed in detail in Chapter A (Wolf and others, 1990). This chapter (G) describes the geohydrology of the Great Plains aquifer system; the physical framework of the Great Plains aquifer system is presented in Chapter B (Spinazola and others, 1992).
The maps in this chapter are based on existing data from selected geophysical and lithologic logs, drill-stem tests, water-level measurements, water-quality analyses, and published maps of stratigraphically equivalent units. An index to the geohydrologic data compiled for the CMRASA in Kansas is presented in Spinazola and others (1987). Well yields generally ranged from 25 to 200 gal/min; however, yields of 1600 gal/min are reported from wells in the gravel, pediment, and fan deposits.

Bedrock aquifers that yield the most abundant water supplies are the Tensleep Sandstone, Madison Limestone, Bighorn Dolomite, and Flathead Sandstone. The aquifers with the most potential for development as a water supply, predominately composed of sandstone, are the Lance, Mesaverde, and Frontier Formations.

The Madison Limestone, the Darby Formation, and the Bighorn Dolomite form the Madison Bighorn aquifer. Reported yields from the aquifer ranged from 40 to 14,000 gal/min. Flowing wells from the Madison-Bighorn aquifer had shut-in pressures ranging from 41 to 212 pounds per square inch (95 to 490 feet above land surface).

Shut-in pressures from flowing wells in bedrock indicate declines, from the time the wells were completed to 1988, as much as 390 feet. Flows have also decreased over time.

Water samples from wells completed in unconsolidated aquifers have concentrations of dissolved solids less than 2,000 mg/L (milligrams per liter). Water from unconsolidated aquifers are classified as a calcium sulfate type, a sodium sulfate type, and sodium-calcium sulfate type.

Water samples from wells completed in aquifers in Paleozoic and Precambrian rocks had median concentrations of dissolved solids ranging from 111 to 275 mg/L. Water samples from wells in Tertiary and Cretaceous rocks had a median concentration of dissolved solids ranging from 1,107 to 3,320 mg/L. Water types for these aquifers were usually sodium sulfate.

Perennial streams originate in the mountains and ephemeral streams originate in the Bighorn Basin. Irrigation return-flow to streams maintains perennial flow in what would otherwise be ephemeral streams. Streams that originate in the Bighorn Basin have specific conductance values generally greater than 1,000 mg/L, whereas streams that originate in the Bighorn Mountains have specific conductance values generally less than 1,000 mg/L. The predominant dissolved constituents are calcium or sodium and bicarbonate or sulfate.

Concentrations of pesticides detected in surface-water samples were less than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USHPA) maximum contaminant levels. The detected concentrations of pesticides in streambed material in the organochlorine insecticide class ranged from 0.1 to 8.0 micrograms per kilogram. Pesticides detected in ground-water samples included dicamba and picloram at a concentration of 0.40 jig/L (micrograms per liter), atrazines (0.40 jig/L), aldicarb sulfone (1.44 |ig/L), aldicarb sulfoxide (0.52 |ig/L), and malathion (0.02 jig/L).

Analyses of ground-water samples for radionuclides indicate that concentrations from four municipal wells exceeded the maximum contaminant level established by the USEPA. Of these four wells, concentrations in water samples from the municipal well at Frannie consistently exceeded the USEPA maximum contaminant level for dissolved gross alpha activity of 15 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) and radium-226 plus radium-228 (5 pCi/L). The source of the radioactivity is postulated to be the Madison Limestone.

Surface water accounts for 96 percent and ground water accounts for 4 percent of total offstream water use in Big Horn County, Wyoming. Irrigation is the largest offstream use of both surface and ground water. About 99 percent of offstream surface water and 55 percent of ground water is used for irrigation. Eighty-two percent of the water used for irrigation is consumed, which includes a 37-percent conveyance loss and 45 percent consumed by the irrigated crops. Ground water supplies 89 percent of water used for domestic purposes and about 16 percent of water used for public supplies, which shows that ground water is a primary domestic water supply in rural areas where public supplies are not available.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri934021","usgsCitation":"Plafcan, M., Cassidy, E.W., and Smalley, M.L., 1993, Water resources of Big Horn County, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4021, Report: vi, 142 p.; 2 Plates: 24.47 x 21.26 inches and 22.67 x 22.55 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934021.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 142 p.; 2 Plates: 24.47 x 21.26 inches and 22.67 x 22.55 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159173,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4021/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58030,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4021/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58031,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4021/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":347429,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4021/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","county":"Big Horn County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.62268447875977,\n              45.00025255079322\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.62182617187499,\n              44.11815563115412\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.13043212890625,\n              44.156592967556605\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.13043212890625,\n              44.21174128124646\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.138671875,\n              44.33170718680922\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.13317871093749,\n              44.378839759088585\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.28424072265625,\n              44.50434127765394\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.44354248046875,\n              44.57090430226871\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.5341796875,\n              44.67255939212045\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.633056640625,\n              44.73697895420882\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.808837890625,\n              44.809121700077355\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.86651611328124,\n              44.91619436708162\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.89329528808594,\n              45.001344981876535\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.62268447875977,\n              45.00025255079322\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47b3e4b07f02db49eb8d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Plafcan, Maria","contributorId":20338,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Plafcan","given":"Maria","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201042,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cassidy, Earl W. ecassidy@usgs.gov","contributorId":1192,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cassidy","given":"Earl","email":"ecassidy@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":201043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smalley, Myron L.","contributorId":198447,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smalley","given":"Myron","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This report, Volume 2, includes records from the Susquehanna and Potomac River basins. Specifically, it contains (1) discharge records for 85 continuous-record streamflow-gaging stations and 38 partial-record stations; (2) elevation and contents records for 13 lakes and reservoirs; (3) water-quality records for 12 streamflow-gaging stations and 48 ungaged streamsites; and (4) water-level records for 25 observation wells. The location of these sites is shown in the figures. Additional water data collected at various sites not involved in the systematic data-collection program are also presented. These data together with the data in Volumes 1 and 3, represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State, local, and Federal agencies in Pennsylvania.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wdrPA922","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, and with other State, municipal, and Federal agencies","usgsCitation":"Durlin, R., and Schaffstall, W., 1993, Water resources data, Pennsylvania, water year 1992. This report (1) identifies which of the existing water-quality data are suitable for characterizing general conditions in a nationally consistent manner and (2) describes, to the extent possible, recent, general water-quality conditions in the Central Nebraska Basins. The study unit con- sists of the area drained by the Platte River between the confluence of the North Platte and South Platte Rivers near North Platte downstream to its confluence with the Missouri River south of Omaha. The report includes (1) a description of the sources and characteristics of water-quality data that are available, (2) a description of the approach used for screening data to identify a subset of the data suitable for summary and comparisons, (3) a presen- tation of the results of statistical and graphical summaries of recent, general water-quality con- ditions, and (4) comparisons of recent, general water-quality conditions to established national water-quality criteria, where applicable. Stream- and lake-water data are summarized for selected sampling sites, and data are summarized by major subunits of the study unit (the Sandhills, Loess Hills, Glaciated Area, and Platte Valley subunits) for streambed-sediment, fish-tissue, aquatic- ecological, and ground-water data. The summaries focus on the central tendencies and typical variation in the data and use nonparametric statistics such as frequencies and percentile values.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBooks and Open-File Reports [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr93422","usgsCitation":"Zelt, R.B., and Jordan, P.R., 1993, Water-quality assessment of the central Nebraska basins; summary of data for recent conditions through 1990: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-422, viii, 178 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93422.","productDescription":"viii, 178 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153657,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0422/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51097,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0422/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48c5e4b07f02db53fc01","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zelt, R. An integral part of that original mission includes publishing and disseminating the earth science information needed to understand, to plan the use of, and to manage the Nation's energy, land, mineral, and water resources.
\n
Since 1879, the research and fact-finding role of the USGS has grown and been modified to meet the changing needs of the Nation it serves. As part of that evolution, the USGS has become the Federal Government's largest earth-science research agency, the Nation's largest civilian mapmaking agency, the primary source of data on the Nation's surface- and ground-water resources, and the employer of the largest number of professional earth scientists. Today's (1992) programs serve a diversity of needs and users.
\n
\n
Conducting detailed assessments of the energy and mineral potential of the Nation's land and offshore Anomalous major- and minor-element concentrations were based on baseline values established from element concentrations in streambed sediment in the basin.  The largest number of anomalies occurred for antimony, arsenic, cerium, copper, and zinc; at least 10 percent of these element concentrations exceeded the threshold values of 0.7 mg/g (micrograms per gram), 8.5 mg/g, 57 mg/g, 40 mg/g, and 120 mg/g, respectively. Concentrations of arsenic as large as 31 and 61 mg/g occurred in streambed sediment formed from the pre-Tertiary metamorphic and intrusive rocks geologic unit and from the nonmarine sedimentary rocks geologic unit, respectively.  These geologic units were probable sources of arsenic to smaller headwater streams; however, arsenic concentrations from these geologic sources rapidly attenuated downstream in the Yakima River.  Geologic sources of arsenic were generally small in agricultural land-use areas; however, concentrations as large as 140 mg/g were found in samples of soils that were historically treated with the lead-arsenate pesticide.  In addition, concentrations of lead, as large as 890 mg/g, occurred in these pesticide- treated soils.  Streambed sediment formed from the pre-Tertiary metamorphic and intrusive rocks geologic unit also contained concentrations as large as 1,700 mg/g for chromium, 140 mg/g for cobalt, and 1,900 mg/g for nickel.  Like arsenic, concentrations of chromium (in addition to mercury and nickel) were attenuated in the Yakima River. The application of zinc sulphate to orchards was probably responsible for concentrations of zinc as large as 150 mg/g in soils of and 180 mg/g in streambed sediment from the agricultural land-use area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr9330","usgsCitation":"Fuhrer, G.J., McKenzie, S.W., Rinella, J.F., Sanzolone, R.F., and Skach, K., 1993, Surface-water-quality assessment of the Yakima River basin in Washington: Analysis of major and minor elements in fine-grained streambed sediment, 1987: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-30, Report: viii, 131 p.; 3 Plates: 50.00 × 39.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9330.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 131 p.; 3 Plates: 50.00 × 39.00 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":408350,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_12599.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":21457,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0030/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":21456,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0030/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":21455,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0030/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46990,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0030/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":150576,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0030/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Yakima River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.519,\n              45.973\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.15,\n              45.973\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.15,\n              47.616\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.519,\n              47.616\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.519,\n              45.973\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68a4ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fuhrer, G. Hydrogeologic data were collected from 1988 to 1990 to learn more about surface- and ground-water flow in the basin. Impermeable rocks form a boundary to ground-water flow on the east side of the basin and at unknown depths at the base of the flow system. Permeable volcanic rocks on the west and north sides of the basin represent a previously unrecognized aquifer and provide potential avenues for interbasin flow. Geophysical data indicate that basin-fill sediments are about 2,000 feet thick near the center of the basin. The geometry of the aquifers, however, remains largely unknown. Measurements of water levels, pressure head, flow rate, water temperature, and specific conductance at 19 wells show little change from 1988 to 1990. Chemically, ground water begins as a dilute sodium and calcium bicarbonate water in the mountain blocks, changes to a slightly saline sodium bicarbonate solution beneath the alluvial fans, and becomes a briny sodium chloride water near the playa. Concentrations of several inorganic constituents in the briny water near the playa commonly exceed Nevada drinking-water standards. Ground water in the Honey Lake basin and Smoke Creek Desert basin has similar stable-isotope composition, except near Sand Pass. If interbasin flow takes place, it likely occurs at depths greater than 400-600 feet beneath Sand Pass or through volcanic rocks to the north of Sand Pass. Measure- ments of streamflow indicate that about 2,800 acre-feet/year discharged from volcanic rocks to streamflow and a minimum of 7.300 acre-feet/year infiltrated and recharged unconsolidated sediments near Smoke, Buffalo, and Squaw Creeks during the period of study. Also about 1,500 acre-feet per year was lost to evapotranspiration along the channel of Smoke Creek, and about 1,680 acre-feet per year of runoff from Smoke, Buffalo, and Squaw Creeks was probably lost to evaporation from the playa.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri934043","usgsCitation":"Maurer, D.K., 1993, Hydrogeologic setting and hydrologic data of the Smoke Creek Desert basin, Washoe County, Nevada, and Lassen County, California, water years 1988-90: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4043, v, 45 p. :ill., maps (1 col.) ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934043.","productDescription":"v, 45 p. :ill., maps (1 col.) ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123516,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4043/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57444,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4043/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":57445,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4043/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":57446,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4043/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ee4b07f02db6278ed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Maurer, D. This study prompted the U.S. Department of the Interior to initiate a more detailed study to determine the hydrogeochemical processes that control water quality in the Stillwater WMA, and other nearby wetlands, and the resulting effects on biota, especially migratory birds. Present wetland size is about 10% of historical size; the dissolved- solids load in the water in these now-isolated wetlands has increased only moderately, but the dissolved-solids concentration has increased more than seven-fold. Wetland vegetation has diminished and species composition in flow water has shifted to predominant salt-tolerant species in many areas. Decreased vegetative cover for nesting is implicated in declining waterfowl production. Decreases in numbers or virtual absence of several wildlife species are attributed to degraded water quality. Results of toxicity tests indicate that water in some drains and wetland areas is acutely toxic to some fish and invertebrates. Toxicity is attributed to the combined presence of arsenic, boron, lithium, and molybdenum. Biological pathways are involved in the transport of mercury and selenium from agricultural drains to wetlands. Hatch success of both artificially incubated and field-reared duck eggs was greater than/= 90 percent; no teratogenesis was observed. Mercury in muscle tissue of waterfowl harvested from Carson Lake in October 1987 exceeded the human health criterion six-fold.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBooks and Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri924024B","usgsCitation":"Hallock, L.L., 1993, Detailed study of irrigation drainage in and near wildlife management areas, west-central Nevada, 1987-90; Part B, Effect on biota in Stillwater and Fernley Wildlife Management Areas and other nearby wetlands: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4024, 84 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri924024B.","productDescription":"84 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":84655,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4024b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123964,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4024b/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667b39","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Hallock, Robert J.","contributorId":21621,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hallock","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":745723,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Hallock, Linda L.","contributorId":20810,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hallock","given":"Linda","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":236135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The approach is to subdivide the process for obtaining sediment data into 3 parts: (1) field, (2) office, and (3) laboratory operations. The report also summarizes recommended goals for each subcategory. The quality assurance and quality control practices are described by stating the minimum acceptable activities that a district should conduct. For example, the plan describes field calibration of thermometers and standards used to calibrate a thermometer. The plan also proposes corrective actions if the quality control procedures identify a problem. The plan describes the formal reports prepared by a district that describe the completeness of sediment data and presents an evaluation of data obtained by the quality assurance program. Also described in the plan are the external (non-district) reviews that are needed to examine district sediment operations for conformity with district quality assurance plans and national quality assurance programs.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nBooks and Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr92499","usgsCitation":"Knott, J.M., Glysson, G., Malo, B., and Schroeder, L., 1993, Quality assurance plan for the collection and processing of sediment data by the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 92-499, iv, 18 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr92499.","productDescription":"iv, 18 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150038,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0499/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46791,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0499/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8fe4b07f02db655212","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knott, J. The Kanawha River originates in south-central West Virginia and flows northwestward to the Ohio River. Knowledge of traveltime and dispersion of a soluble dye could help river managers mitigate effects of an accidental spill. Traveltime and dispersion data were collected from June 20 through July 4, 1991, when river discharges decreased from June 24 through July 3, 1991. Daily mean discharges decreased from 5,540 ft 3/s on June 24 to 2,790 ft3/s on July 2 at Kanawha Falls and from 5,680 ft3/s on June 24 to 3,000 ft3/s on July 2 at Charleston. Water-surface elevations in regulated pools indicated a loss of water storage during the period. A spill at Gauley Bridge under similar streamflow conditions of this study is estimated to take 15 days to move beyond Winfield Dam. Estimated time of passage (elapsed time at a particular location) at Marmet Dam and Winfield Dam is approximately 2.5 days and 5.5 days, respectively. The spill is estimated to spend 12 days in the Winfield pool.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Earth Science Information Center--Open-File Report Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr93121","usgsCitation":"Wiley, J., 1993, Traveltime and dispersion data, including associated discharge and water-surface elevation data, Kanawha River West Virginia, 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-121, iv, 31 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93121.","productDescription":"iv, 31 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154192,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0121/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50967,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0121/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f08c3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wiley, J.B.","contributorId":76739,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiley","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":184357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In 1984, before implementation of the modifications, a study was initiated to allow definition of the effects of those modifications on the hydrology of the marshes. Water levels in canals near the West Onslow Beach study marsh are controlled by periodic, gravitational tides. Daily maximum tides exceeded the elevation of the upper marsh surface 30% of the time before and 18% of the time after open-marsh water management. Daily maximum tides at this marsh exceeded the upper marsh surface 34% of the time before and 24% of the time after open-marsh water management. Variation in tidal conditions resulted in varying numbers and duration of floods at the study marshes. Duration analyses indicated relations between tide levels and marsh surface-water levels were unchanged after modifications. Groundwater movement through the marshes varies seasonally and is primarily vertical. Withdrawals are by evapotranspiration and recharge is by infiltration. During nongrowing months saturated conditions prevail. Groundwater flow to the marsh interior from the surrounding tidal canals was not detected during these declines. Changes in the natural variation in withdrawals from and recharge to groundwater were not indicated by the data collected during this study. Water levels in canals adjacent to the Hobucken study marsh are primarily controlled by wind-driven tides.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri934051","usgsCitation":"Pope, B., 1993, Hydrology of two tidal marshes in North Carolina where open-marsh water management modifications have been implemented: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4051, v, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934051.","productDescription":"v, 41 p.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124776,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4051/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58050,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4051/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":466141,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47776.htm","text":"Hobucken marsh","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":466142,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47777.htm","text":"Onslow Beach marsh","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","city":"Hobucken","otherGeospatial":"West Onslow Beach","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.54615625888958,\n              35.2444\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.54615625888958,\n              35.233\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.52548712233958,\n              35.233\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.52548712233958,\n              35.2444\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.54615625888958,\n              35.2444\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.5333,\n              34.4542\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5333,\n              34.4417\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5167,\n              34.4417\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5167,\n              34.4542\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5333,\n              34.4542\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e478fe4b07f02db48a38e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pope, B.F.","contributorId":10062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pope","given":"B.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201096,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
