These stations, mostly north of Fairbanks, add to the historical network of gaging stations and provide records of hydrologic conditions along the TAPS route. Selected data from 23 gaging stations along the TAPS route for the period 1970-74 (prior to construction of the pipeline) are compiled in graphic form. The data include annual hydrographs of daily mean or instantaneous values of a standard set of parameters which are indicative of physical, chemical and biological conditions of the streams. The hydrographs facilitate comparisons of data, both in time and between stream sites. Thus, they are a tool for evaluating streamflow characteristics along the TAPS route during the preconstruction period. In the Inyokern area the average water-level decline was 2.0 ft for two wells between October 1973 and November 1976. In the Ridgecrest area the average decline was 4.5 ft for four wells between October 1973 and December 1976 but was 10.3 ft for one well during the same period. Reported metered ground-water pumpage from Indian Wells Valley totaled 14,400 acre-ft in 1974, 14,500 acre-ft in 1975, and 14,100 acre-ft in 1976. These figures may not completely reflect the total pumpage from the basin due to changing patterns of land use and new pumping sources. The design specifications for both wells called for 24-inch diameter surface casing cemented in place to a depth of about 430 feet, with 16-inch liner and slotted casing from the surface to a depth of about 700 feet. Each well was pumped continuously for 32 hours in a step-drawdown test. This test consisted of four steps, with discharge rates varying from about 500 to 1,150 gallons per minute. The drawdown test for well 21 gave an estimated transmissivity of 17,300 gallons per day per foot, and a final specific capacity of slightly less than 11 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The step-drawdown test and later drawdown and recovery test on well 22 gave an average transmissivity of 32,600 gallons per day per foot, and a final specific capacity of about 15 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The data collected indicated that the aquifer in the vicinity of well 22 is more permeable than the aquifer around well 21. Both wells furnish a satisfactory quantity of excellent-quality water. The dissolved-solids content of water from wells 21 and 22 is 232 and 301 mg/liter respectively. The model is both general and flexible in that it can be applied to a wide range of problem types. It is applicable to one- or two-dimensional problems involving steady-state or transient flow. The model computes changes in concentration over time caused by the processes of convective transport, hydrodynamic dispersion, and mixing (or dilution) from fluid sources. The model assumes that the solute is non-reactive and that gradients of fluid density, viscosity, and temperature do not affect the velocity distribution. However, the aquifer may be heterogeneous and (or) anisotropic.\r\nThe model couples the ground-water flow equation with the solute-transport equation. The digital computer program uses an alternating-direction implicit procedure to solve a finite-difference approximation to the ground-water flow equation, and it uses the method of characteristics to solve the solute-transport equation. The latter uses a particle- tracking procedure to represent convective transport and a two-step explicit procedure to solve a finite-difference equation that describes the effects of hydrodynamic dispersion, fluid sources and sinks, and divergence of velocity. This explicit procedure has several stability criteria, but the consequent time-step limitations are automatically determined by the program.\r\nThe report includes a listing of the computer program, which is written in FORTRAN IV and contains about 2,000 lines. The model is based on a rectangular, block-centered, finite difference grid. It allows the specification of any number of injection or withdrawal wells and of spatially varying diffuse recharge or discharge, saturated thickness, transmissivity, boundary conditions, and initial heads and concentrations. The program also permits the designation of up to five nodes as observation points, for which a summary table of head and concentration versus time is printed at the end of the calculations. The data input formats for the model require three data cards and from seven to nine data sets to describe the aquifer properties, boundaries, and stresses.\r\nThe accuracy of the model was evaluated for two idealized problems for which analytical solutions could be obtained. In the case of one-dimensional flow the agreement was nearly exact, but in the case of plane radial flow a small amount of numerical dispersion occurred. An analysis of several test problems indicates that the error in the mass balance will be generally less than 10 percent. The test problems demonstrated that the accuracy and precision of the numerical solution is sensitive to the initial number of particles placed in each cell and to the size of the time increment, as determined by the stability criteria. Mass balance errors are commonly the greatest during the first several time increments, but tend to decrease and stabilize with time.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. Data from the San Fernando earthquake are examined to assess the effects of associated structures and of geologic site conditions on peak recorded motions. Small but statistically significant differences are observed in peak values of horizontal acceleration, velocity, and displacement recorded on soil at the base of small structures compared with values recorded at the base of large structures. Values of peak horizontal acceleration recorded at soil sites in the San Fernando earthquake are not significantly different from the values recorded at rock sites, but values of peak horizontal velocity and displacement are significantly greater at soil sites than at rock sites. Three recently published relationships for predicting peak horizontal acceleration are compared and discussed. Considerations are reviewed relevant to ground motion predictions at close distances where there are insufficient recorded data points.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr78509","collaboration":"Prepared on behalf of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission","usgsCitation":"Boore, D.M., Oliver, A.A., Page, R.A., and Joyner, W.B., 1978, Estimation of ground motion parameters: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-509, i, 38 p.; Figures, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78509.","productDescription":"i, 38 p.; Figures","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":116758,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_78_509.gif"},{"id":110891,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0509/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb2a6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boore, David M. boore@usgs.gov","contributorId":2509,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boore","given":"David","email":"boore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":154373,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Oliver, Adolph A. Most of the water is of excellent quality. The analysis of water from one well on the Campo Reservation indicates a concentration of nitrate that exceeds the recommended limit established in 1972 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Most wells and springs in the study area yield water for domestic purposes. The yields range from less than 1 gallon per minute to 210 gallons per minute. Most of the water is produced from shallow aluvial-filled channels or from consolidated rocks that are deeply weathered locally or highly fractured. The well data show that insufficient water is available on the four reservations for large-scale irrigation. A subset of the data (from the San Fernando earthquake) is used to assess the effects of structural size and of geologic site conditions on peak motions recorded at the base of structures. Small but statistically significant differences are observed in peak values of horizontal acceleration, velocity and displacement recorded on soil at the base of small structures compared with values recorded at the base of large structures. The peak acceleration tends to b3e less and the peak velocity and displacement tend to be greater on the average at the base of large structures than at the base of small structures. In the distance range used in the regression analysis (15-100 km) the values of peak horizontal acceleration recorded at soil sites in the San Fernando earthquake are not significantly different from the values recorded at rock sites, but values of peak horizontal velocity and displacement are significantly greater at soil sites than at rock sites.\r\n\r\nSome consideration is given to the prediction of ground motions at close distances where there are insufficient recorded data points. As might be expected from the lack of data, published relations for predicting peak horizontal acceleration give widely divergent estimates at close distances (three well known relations predict accelerations between 0.33 g to slightly over 1 g at a distance of 5 km from a magnitude 6.5 earthquake). After considering the physics of the faulting process, the few available data close to faults, and the modifying effects of surface topography, at the present time it would be difficult to accept estimates less than about 0.8 g, 110 cm/s, and 40 cm, respectively, for the mean values of peak acceleration, velocity, and displacement at rock sites within 5 km of fault rupture in a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. These estimates can be expected to change as more data become available.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir795","usgsCitation":"Boore, D.M., Joyner, W.B., Oliver, A., and Page, R., 1978, Estimation of ground motion parameters: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 795, v, 43 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm. , https://doi.org/10.3133/cir795.","productDescription":"v, 43 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm. The use of General Electric's worldwide information-services network provides access to the CRIB file to a worldwide clientele. This manual, which consists of two chapters, is intended as a guide to users who wish to interrogate the file. Chapter A contains a description of the CRIB file, information on the use of the GIPSY retrieval system, and a description of the General Electric MARK III Service. Chapter B contains a description of the individual data items in the CRIB record as well as code lists. \r\n\r\nCRIB consists of a set of variable-length records on the metallic and nonmetallic mineral resources of the United States and other countries. At present, 31,645 records in the master file are being made available. The record contains information on mineral deposits and mineral commodities. Some topics covered are: deposit name, location, commodity information, description of deposit, geology, production, reserves, potential resources, and references. \r\n\r\nThe data are processed by the GIPSY program, which maintains the data file and builds, updates, searches, and prints the records using simple yet versatile command statements. Searching and selecting records is accomplished by specifying the presence, absence, or content of any element of information in the record; these specifications can be logically linked to prepare sophisticated search strategies. Output is available in the form of the complete record, a listing of selected parts of the record, or fixed-field tabulations. \r\n\r\nThe General Electric MARK III Service is a computerized information services network operating internationally by land lines, satellites, and undersea cables. The service is available by local telephone to 500 cities in North America, Western Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. An interface called the 'foreground driver' is used to link the GIPSY program to the General Electric system.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir755A","usgsCitation":"Calkins, J.A., Keefer, E., Ofsharick, R.A., Mason, G.T., Tracy, P., and Atkins, M., 1978, Description of CRIB, the GIPSY retrieval mechanism, and the interface to the General Electric MARK III Service : CRIB, the mineral resources data bank of the U.S. Geological Survey--guide for public users, 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 755, iii, p A1-A49; ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir755A.","productDescription":"iii, p A1-A49; ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124546,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1978/0755a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31381,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1978/0755a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cace","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Calkins, James Alfred","contributorId":75504,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Calkins","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"Alfred","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148653,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Keefer, Eleanor K.","contributorId":13218,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keefer","given":"Eleanor K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148650,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ofsharick, Regina A.","contributorId":53772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ofsharick","given":"Regina","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148652,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Mason, George T.","contributorId":51277,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mason","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148651,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Tracy, Patricia","contributorId":99960,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tracy","given":"Patricia","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148654,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Atkins, Mary","contributorId":108091,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Atkins","given":"Mary","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148655,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

On the basis of these studies, a tentative site for a nuclear waste repository/disposal facility has been selected near the center of the Los Medafios area in Eddy and Lea Counties, New Mexico (Fig. 1). The proposed host rock for the emplacement of nuclear waste at the potential repository site consists of the bedded evaporite deposits of the Salado Formation. Numerous test holes have been drilled in the Los Medafios area to determine geologic conditions and to obtain geophysical data and rock samples for additional site-evaluation studies. This report tabulates borehole gravity data acquired in one of these test holes, ERDA No. 9, and summarizes the geology of the consolidated rock formations in which gravity observations were made.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78696","usgsCitation":"Kososki, B.A., Robbins, S.L., and Schmoker, J.W., 1978, Principal facts for borehole gravity stations in stratigraphic test well ERDA No. 9, Eddy County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-696, 12 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78696.","productDescription":"12 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":427069,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0696/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142014,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0696/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","county":"Eddy County","otherGeospatial":"test well ERDA No. 9","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.99746935243692,\n              32.51484505734847\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.99746935243692,\n              32.08265569615702\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.07955856598171,\n              32.08265569615702\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.07955856598171,\n              32.51484505734847\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.99746935243692,\n              32.51484505734847\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa9e4b07f02db668312","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kososki, Bruce A.","contributorId":70416,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kososki","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160462,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Robbins, Stephen L.","contributorId":68291,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160460,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schmoker, James W.","contributorId":52171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmoker","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160461,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
