The operation of the Barrow, Alaska, magnetic observatory (lat. 71.32°N, long. 156.62°W) has been complicated because foundations for the instrument piers must be constructed on permafrost. Better understanding of environmental conditions and the availability of more modern instrumentation since the original construction have led to the design and construction of new piers to provide a more stable platform for the absolute and recording instruments. In May 1975, a digital- and analog-recording fluxgate and proton magnetometer system was installed to replace a conventional magnetograph. These changes in construction and recording instrumentation were made to permit unmanned operation, to provide digital data, and to improve the quality of the data collected. Nearly two years of observations under the new mode of operation have been examined and compared with prior observations. Preliminary results indicate that ranges in the baseline ' data were reduced by factors of 15.6 for horizontal intensity; 9.1 for declination; and 5.0 for vertical intensity.

The coring took place in September, 1977 aboard the R/V ANNANDALE. During the cruise (AN-01-77), 20 vibracores were taken at 17 stations across the Continental Shelf off the coast of New Jersey (Figure 1). Table 1 shows the station locations, the water depths at each station, and the core lengths.
The objective of the study was to obtain a set of representative index properties as well as strength and compressibility data on sediments from across the shelf in the Baltimore Canyon Trough area. It was anticipated that these data, although of a reconnaissance rather than a site-specific nature, would provide a useful indication of the engineering properties of these sediments. Ultimately, these data may be used for preliminary design applications and the assessment of potential hazards. In this report, the results are presented without any interpretation. An overall evaluation of all data collected during the study, including those contained in this report, presently is underway.
Users of this report should be cautioned not to take these test results out of context. Two factors must be borne in mind. The first is that these tests were done on somewhat disturbed samples compared with those obtained through high-quality sampling programs onshore. Much disturbance is inevitable offshore but the significance of the disturbance on these test results has not yet been evaluated. The second factor is that these data are only part of the total set available from this project. A complete analysis of all data may lead to conclusions that are different from those based on this set of data only.
The tests reported herein were performed by Geotechnical Engineers Inc., 1017 Main Street, Winchester, Massachusetts 01890, under Contract 14-08-0001-16232 of the U.S. Geological Survey. Richard Brown and Charles Osgood performed the engineering properties tests. Sally A. Wood of the U.S. Geological Survey handled the transfer of vibracores between the U.S. Geological Survey and Geotechnical Engineers Inc. and, also, assisted in the preparation of this report.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole No. 5, Missouri log number 21245, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 4, T. 30 N., R. 1 E., in Reynolds County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole no. 16, Missouri log numbers 21231 and 23857, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 1, T. 29 N., R. 6 E., in Wayne County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.

Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole No. 8, Missouri log number 21589, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 12, T. 27 N., R. 1 W., in Carter County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole No. 12, Missouri log numbers 12195 and 12339, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 18, T. 34 N., R. 5 W. in Reynolds County. Data of the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data of the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole No. 10, Missouri log number 25824, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 25, T. 32 N., R. 10 W., in Texas County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.

These quadrangles are in southwest New Mexico and include the well-known mineral deposits of the Silver City area. The sampling was designed to gain semidetailed information on the metal-anomaly characteristics of the strongly mineralized area surrounding Silver City, New Mexico, and to seek geochemical clues for the continuation of these mineral deposits beneath overlying Tertiary volcanic rocks to the north.
The data obtained within areas of known mineral deposits provide information on the metallogenic processes and metal suites that both relate and distinguish metal systems. Evaluation of this information relative to the regional geologic framework and the distribution of known mineral deposits will result in the identification of additional target areas for exploration, as well as further our understanding of the geochemical characteristics of mineralized areas. Extrapolation of models developed from the study of areas of known, exposed mineralization to areas covered by Tertiary volcanic rocks, such as the northern part of this tier of quadrangles, is a promising procedure for continuing research into geochemical-anomaly characteristics of covered mineral deposits.
Preliminary interpretation of the data indicates that the southern part of the area in which Paleozoic-Mesozoic rocks and mineral deposits are exposed, should be reassessed to the classification and genesis of some of the deposits and to the types of mineral commodities that may be present. Some wholly new exploration targets within these areas are also indicated by some of the data. In addition, geochemical clues to buried mineral deposits, possibly representing continuation northward of some features of the Silver City mining district, have been observed in data from the northern, Tertiary volcanic areas. The meanings of these clues are still speculative.
For this study, 917 stream-sediment and 921 stream-sediment concentrate samples were collected. The stream-sediment-concentrate samples, which consist of heavy minerals, were split into magnetic and nonmagnetic fractions, each of which was analyzed. This resulted in the analysis of 1,842 heavy-mineral and 917 sieved stream-sediment samples.
Analytical results for all of the sample types are summarized statistically on table 1 and tabulated in their entirety on table 2.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole No. 11, Missouri log number 2246, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 3, T. 34 N., R. 6 W., in Dent County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.

The study is to access the mineral resource potential of the area by integrated geologic, geochemical, and geophysical studies.
The geochemical work to date has been directed at the characterization of the sedimentary and igneous rocks in the quadrangle through spectrographic and chemical analyses of whole-rock samples and dilute-hydrochloric-acid insoluble-residue samples of whole rock from widely spaced drill holes. Sixty-two drill holes have been selected for study from the sample library of the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey. None of the holes are company-confidential, none intersect economically significant mineralized ground, and only a few are located in known ore-bearing trends.
The analytical results for drill hole no. 25, Missouri log number 22394, are given in this report. The drill hole is located in sec. 27, T. 38 N., R. 3 E., in Washington County. Data for the whole-rock samples are listed in table 1, and data for the insoluble-residue samples are listed in table 2. Missouri log number, county, and location allow correlation with the stratigraphic logs on file at the Missouri Division of Geology and Land Survey in Rolla, Mo.
Hydrologic investigations of urban watersheds in Texas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954. Studies are now in progress in Austin, Dallas and Dallas County, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.
The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, began hydrologic studies in the Austin urban area in 1954. In cooperation with the city of Austin, the program was expanded in 1975 to include additional streamflow and rainfall gaging stations, and the collection of water-quality data. The objectives of the Austin urban hydrology study are as follows:1. To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydrologic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of flood peaks and flood volume.; 2. To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volume.; 3. To ascertain the variation in water quality for different seasons from selected basins of varying urban development.
This report presents the basic hydrologic data collected in the Austin urban area for the 1976 water year (Oct. 1, 1976 to Sept. 30, 1976). To facilitate the pubication and distribution of this report at the earliest feasible time, certain material has been included that does not conform to the formal publication standards of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Bed roughness data in the form of grass heights and densities are tabulated. A total of 19 steady flow experiments and 7 unsteady flow experiments for varying grass heights are included. For the steady flow experiments, an average set of water-surface elevations and point velocity measurements are tabulated.
Inflow discharge hydrographs are tabulated for the unsteady flow experiments. The tabulated point velocities and water-surface elevations for the unsteady flow experiments were selected to represent the general changes in the flow variables as the flood wave passed through the facility but do not include all collected data. However, all data that were collected have been stored on computer disk storage and may be retrieved using the listing programs and memory locations.

The U.S. Geological Survey-LaCoste and Romberg-1/ borehole gravity meter (McCulloh and others, 1967a; McCulloh and others, 1967b) was used in the logging program. The primary objective of this work was to obtain data for the determination of accurate in situ formation densities utilizing an instrument not significantly affected by casing, borehole rugosity, or other near-borehole conditions.
This report provides a brief summary of the geology of the rock formations penetrated by drill holes Ue 19z, PH-1, and water well 5a, and tabulates the subsurface gravity data obtained in these, wells. Reduced sections of the gamma-ray logs run in PM-1 and 5a are also included.

Advanced digital image processing techniques are used to perform geometric and radiometric corrections and to perform contrast and edge enhancements. The enhanced image product is produced from digitally preprocessed Landsat computer compatible tapes (CCTs) on a laser beam film recording system. Landsat CCT data have several geometric distortions which are corrected when NASA produces the standard film products. When producing film images from CCT's, geometric correction of the data is required. The EDC Digital Image Enhancement System (EDIES) compensates for geometric distortions introduced by Earth's rotation, variable line length, non-uniform mirror scan velocity, and detector misregistration. Radiometric anomalies such as bad data lines and striping are common to many Landsat film products and are also in the CCT data. Bad data lines or line segments with more than 150 contiguous bad pixels are corrected by inserting data from the previous line in place of the bad data. Striping, caused by variations in detector gain and offset, is removed with a destriping algorithm applied after digitally enhancing the data. Image enhancement is performed by applying a linear contrast stretch and an edge enhancement algorithm. The linear contrast enhancement algorithm is designed to expand digitally the full range of useful data recorded on the CCT over the range of 256 digital counts. This minimizes the effect of atmospheric scattering and saturates the relative brightness of highly reflecting features such as clouds or snow. It is the intent that no meaningful terrain data are eliminated by the digital processing. The edge enhancement algorithm is designed to enhance boundaries between terrain features that exhibit subtle differences in brightness values along edges of features. After the digital data have been processed, data for each Landsat band are recorded on black-and-white film with a laser beam film recorder (LBR). The LBR corrects for aspect ratio distortions as the digital data are recorded on the recording film over a preselected density range. Positive transparencies of MSS bands 4, 5, and 7 produced by the LBR are used to make color composite transparencies. Color film positives are made photographically from first generation black-and-white products generated on the LBR.

Dak. When field checking of maps 20 miles northeast of Baker, Calif., during the day showed that changes in classification were needed, the terminal was used at night to combine image statistical files, remap portions of images, and produce new alphanumeric maps for field checking during the next day. The alphanumeric maps can be used without serious difficulty in location in the field even though the scale is distorted, and statistical files created during the field check can be used for full image classification and map output at the EDC. This process makes field checking faster than normal, provides interaction with the statistical data while in the field, and reduces to a minimum the number of trips needed to work interactively with the IDIMS at the EDC, thus saving significant amounts of time and money. The only significant problem is using telephone lines which at times create spurious characters in the printout or prevent the line feed (paper advance) signal from reaching the terminal, thus overprinting lines which should be sequential. We recommend that maps for field checking be made with more spectral classes than are expected because in the field it is much easier to group classes than to reclassify or separate classes when only the remote terminal is available for display.

Tremendous areas of lowlands were inundated along the Indus River and major tributaries. Landsat data made it possible to easily measure the extent of flooding, totaling about 20,000 km2 within an area of about 400,000 km2 south from the Punjab to the Arabian Sea.
The Indus River data were used to continue experimentation in the development of rapid, accurate, and inexpensive optical techniques of flood mapping by satellite begun in 1973 for the Mississipi River floods. The research work on the Indus River not resulted in the development of more effective procedures for optical processing of flood data and synoptically depicting flooding, but also provided potentially valuable ancillary information concerning the hydrology of much of the Indus River Basin.

The application of contrast stretch and haze removal techniques to Landsat/MSS imagery for shallow seas bathymetry is discussed. The application of these techniques is based upon procedures inherent in the EDIPS system processing. Application of both MSS band 4 and band 5 data are discussed in lx and 3x gain mode. Both quantitative and qualitative (imagery) data are used to demonstrate the existence of bathymetric information after EDIPS processing.

The method provides a direct and empirical means of sample identification using all of the reported chemistry. In a study of basalt of the Columbia River plateau, the method has been used for (1) checking field identifications of rocks, (2) spotting analytical errors in analyses of samples of known chemical type, (3) identifying repetitions of chemistry in thick stratigraphic sections, and (4) matching analyses of dikes to those of flows that the dikes may have fed.
Program OXVAR creates a set of oxide-oxide variation diagrams on a CALCOMP plotter; any oxide may be used as the base (for example, MgO, SiO2). For each oxide-oxide variation diagram, program CTSET creates the smallest convex polygon that encloses all the data points as well as a larger polygon that takes into account the error in determination of each data point. A set of nested polygons, one for each oxide, then represents a chemical type. Program CTYPE identifies unknown analyses by comparing them with all defined chemical types. If all the elements or oxides of an analysis plot within the defined polygons for a given chemical type, then an identification is printed. If at least one element of an analysis falls outside the set of polygons defined for each chemical type, then “unidentified” is printed, and qualitative information on the amount of deviation from the defined chemical types is given.

The task of summarizing the Symposium, which is the objective of this paper, is not simple because of the diversity of opinions presented regarding (a) the magnitude of the wildlife management problems, and (b) the uses of remotely sensed data to address these problems. Factors which contributed to the diversity of opinions presented include: varying degrees of experience with wildlife management problems, differences in experience with remote sensing applications, and level of responsibility within the management decision-making process.
