In the United States, the Geological Survey is responsible for preparing geothermal assessments based on the best available data and interpretations. Updates are required every few years owing to increasing knowledge, enlarging data base, improving technology, and changing economics. Because geothermal understanding is incomplete and rapidly evolving, the USGS complements its assessments with a broad program of geothermal research that includes (1) study of geothermal processes on crustal and local scales, (2) regional evaluations, (3) intensive study of type systems before and during exploitation (4) improvement of exploration techniques, and (5) investigation of geoenvironmental constraints. ?? 1978 Birkha??user Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Birkha??user-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00879743","issn":"00334553","usgsCitation":"Muffler, L., and Christiansen, R., 1978, Geothermal resource assessment of the United States: Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH, v. 117, no. 1-2, p. 160-171, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00879743.","startPage":"160","endPage":"171","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222031,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":205187,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00879743"}],"volume":"117","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a28d5e4b0c8380cd5a457","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Muffler, L.J.P.","contributorId":63383,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muffler","given":"L.J.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364150,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Christiansen, R.L. 0000-0002-8017-3918","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8017-3918","contributorId":25565,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Christiansen","given":"R.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":364149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Surface and aircraft measurements were obtained during all seasons using a wide variety of active and passive microwave sensors. The surface program obtained passive microwave measurements of various ice types using four antennas mounted on a tracked vehicle. In three test regions, each with an area of approximately 1.5 ?? 104 m2, detailed ice crystallographic, dielectric properties, and brightness temperatures of first-year, multiyear, and first-year/multiyear mixtures were measured. A NASA aircraft obtained passive microwave measurements of the entire area of the AIDJEX manned station array (triangle) during each of 18 flights. This verified the earlier reported ability to distinguish first-year and multiyear ice types and concentration and gave new information on ways to observe ice mixtures and thin ice types. The active microwave measurements from aircraft included those from an X- and L-band radar and from a scatterometer. The former is used to study a wide variety of ice features and to estimate deformations, while both are equally usable to observe ice types. With the present data, only the scatterometer can be used to distinguish positively multiyear from first-year and various types of thin ice. This is best done using coupled active and passive microwave sensing. ?? 1978 D. The calculations are based on the Ganapathy-Anders 7-component model using trace element indicators, but incorportate improved geophysical data and petrological constraints. A model Moon with 40 ppb U, a core 2% by weight (1.8% metal with ???35% Ni and 0.2% FeS) and Mg/(Fe2++Mg)?????0.75 meets the trace element restrictions, and has acceptable density, heat flow and moment of inertia ratio. The high Ni content of the core permits low-Ti mare basalts to equilibrate with metal, yet still retain substantial Ni. The silicate resembles the Taylor-Jakes?? composition (and in some respects the waif Ganapathy-Anders Model 2a), but has lower SiO2. Minor modifications of the model composition (U=30-35 ppb) yield a 50% melt approximating Apollo 15 green glass and a residuum of olivine plus 3 to 4% spinel; the low SiO2, favors spinel formation, and, contrary to expectation, Cr is not depleted in the liquid. Data presented here show an analogous velocity-dependent effect. A theor of friction is proposed that establishes a common basis for static and sliding friction. Creep at points of contact causes increases in friction that are proportional to the logarithm of the time that the population of points of contact exist. For static friction that time is the time of stationary contact. For sliding friction the time of contact is determined by the critical displacement required to change the population of contacts and the slip velocity. An analysis of a one-dimensional spring and slider system shows that experimental observations establishing the transition from stable sliding to stick-slip to be a function of normal stress, stiffness and surface finish are a consequence of time-dependent friction. ?? 1978 Birkha??user Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Birkha??user-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00876539","issn":"00334553","usgsCitation":"Dieterich, J.H., 1978, Time-dependent friction and the mechanics of stick-slip: Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH, v. 116, no. 4-5, p. 790-806, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00876539.","startPage":"790","endPage":"806","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222021,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":205184,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00876539"}],"volume":"116","issue":"4-5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb3b9e4b08c986b325f87","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dieterich, James H.","contributorId":81614,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dieterich","given":"James","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

By using the Thelliers' method in vacuum, geomagnetic paleointensity values were obtained from eight of the lavas; the ninth proved unsuitable. The paleointensities for the four youngest flows (2600–4600 years B.P.) yield virtual dipole moments (VDM's) that are 20% greater to more than twice the worldwide values for those times obtained by V. Bucha from archeomagnetic data. The dispersion of virtual geomagnetic poles for the eight lavas is 15.5°, appreciably larger than the average for older lava flows on Hawaii. These results contrast with the historic magnetic field in the region of Hawaii, in which both secular variation and nondipole components are very low. At about 10,000 years B.P. the measured VDM is not very different from the long‐term worldwide average but differs considerably from a smooth extrapolation of Bucha's average curve. At about 18,000 years B.P. the measured VDM is very low and is associated with an unusually shallow paleomagnetic inclination for the latitude of Hawaii. These new paleointensity and paleodirectional data strongly suggest that sizable nondipole geomagnetic fields have existed in the vicinity of Hawaii at various times during the Holocene epoch and perhaps earlier.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"AGU","doi":"10.1029/JB083iB04p01740","usgsCitation":"Coe, R.S., Gromme, S., and Mankinen, E.A., 1978, Geomagnetic paleointensities from radiocarbon‐dated lava flows on Hawaii and the question of the Pacific nondipole low: Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth, v. 83, no. The main advantage in this method is that is samples a very long period of time, which gives a better estimate of the recurrence of small earthquakes. &nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Wallace, R.E., 1978, How often will earthquakes recur on the San Andreas Fault?: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 10, no. 3, p. 76-81.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"76","endPage":"81","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314828,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Andreas fault","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -124.354248046875,\n              40.59727063442027\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.760986328125,\n              39.926588421909436\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.64038085937499,\n              37.94419750075404\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.497802734375,\n              37.204081555898526\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.0146484375,\n              36.31512514748051\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.751220703125,\n              35.038992046780784\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.01538085937499,\n              34.225429015241396\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.4443359375,\n              33.367237465838315\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.42236328124999,\n              32.96258644191747\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.8837890625,\n              33.04550781490999\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.88330078125,\n              34.31621838080741\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.66308593749999,\n              35.38904996691167\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.31103515625,\n              36.76529191711624\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.64038085937499,\n              37.622933594900864\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.068603515625,\n              39.198205348894795\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.486083984375,\n              40.48038142908172\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.354248046875,\n              40.59727063442027\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a7555ae4b0b28f1184d845","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wallace, R. Indeed, the present limitation upon the precision of measurement is not the resolution of the instruments themselves but rather the uncertainty introduced by variations in the velocity of light in the atmosphere between the two endpoints of the measured distance. This capability in precise distance measurement can be applied to earthquake studies by using repeated distance measurements to determine changes in the distance between monuments located along the major faults. Such measurements have been made along the San Andreas fault since late 1959, and, as a result, a wealth of data on crustal deformation in that area is now available. In fact, geodimeter measurements of this type furnish a more stable measure of secular strain (change in the ratio of length to length) than any continuously recording strain meter. The superiority of the geodimeter measurement stems principally from the long base line measured which averages over local inhomogeneities (cracks and joints in the rock, inclusions, and so forth).</p>\n<p>This article describes the important features of the measurement technique as well as some results for the region of the southern California uplift. &nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Prescott, W., and Savage, J., 1978, Geodimeter measurements and the Southern California uplift: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 10, no. 4, p. 131-135.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"131","endPage":"135","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":318216,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Southern California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.66308593749999,\n              34.52466147177172\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.345703125,\n              35.06597313798418\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.1474609375,\n              37.26530995561875\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.673828125,\n              36.27970720524017\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.66308593749999,\n              34.52466147177172\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56c99c52e4b059daa47c9ac7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Prescott, W.H.","contributorId":96337,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Prescott","given":"W.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":621000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Savage, J.C. 0000-0002-5114-7673","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5114-7673","contributorId":102876,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Savage","given":"J.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":621001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A current meter comparison study was conceived because of the need to select a suitable current meter to meet field requirements for current measurements in the Bay. The study took place in south San Francisco Bay, California, in the spring of 1977. An instrument tower which was designed to support instruments free from the conventional mooring line motions was constructed and emplaced in south San Francisco Bay. During a period of two months, four types of recording current meters have been used in the tests. The four types were: (1) Aanderaa, (2) tethered shroud-impeller, (3) drag-inclinometer, and (4) electromagnetic current meters. With the exception of the electromagnetic current meter, one of each type was mounted on the instrument tower, and one of each type was deployed on moorings near the instrument tower. In addition, a wind anemometer and a recording tide gauge were also installed on the tower. This paper discusses the characteristics of each instrument and the accuracy that each instrument can provide when used in an estuarine environment. We pay special attention to our experiences in the field operation with respect to handling of the instruments and to our experiences working up the raw data in the post-deployment data analysis.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings, Conference on Current Measurements","conferenceTitle":"Conference on Current Measurements","conferenceDate":"Jan 1978","conferenceLocation":"Newark, N.J","language":"English","publisher":"IEEE","doi":"10.1109/CCM.1978.1158394","usgsCitation":"Cheng, R.T., 1978, Comparison of a few recording current meters in San Francisco Bay, CA, <i>in</i> Proceedings, Conference on Current Measurements, Newark, N.J, Jan 1978, p. 293-301, https://doi.org/10.1109/CCM.1978.1158394.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"293","endPage":"301","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":552,"text":"San Francisco Bay-Delta","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5079,"text":"Pacific Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":324969,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"South San Francisco","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.38906860351562,\n              37.783740105227224\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.36984252929688,\n              37.80544394934274\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.35198974609375,\n              37.819548028632376\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.29980468749999,\n              37.8271414168374\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.32589721679688,\n              37.8065289741725\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.24212646484375,\n              37.78482544885859\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.21054077148438,\n              37.75551557687061\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.19955444335938,\n              37.70663997801686\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14324951171874,\n              37.62945956107554\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14050292968749,\n              37.58485404085004\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.09381103515624,\n              37.58811876638322\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.06497192382811,\n              37.520618678869305\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.97708129882812,\n              37.48466628708502\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.93588256835938,\n              37.46395857276409\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.9647216796875,\n              37.437793259976544\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.07046508789062,\n              37.43015998649174\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.09930419921876,\n              37.44433544620035\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.13363647460938,\n              37.497741887143576\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.19406127929688,\n              37.522797055259616\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.24899291992188,\n              37.55764242679524\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.31903076171875,\n              37.58920697640769\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.37533569335936,\n              37.60117623656667\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.39181518554686,\n              37.64468458716586\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.39593505859376,\n              37.69903420794415\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.38632202148438,\n              37.71533133102705\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.35885620117186,\n              37.72293542866175\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.39456176757811,\n              37.77288579232436\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.38906860351562,\n              37.783740105227224\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5780ceb3e4b08116168222de","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cheng, R. One problem that has been pointed out is that the estimated supply responses of new discoveries brought about by price increases appear to be unrealistically high. Because data&nbsp; frequently&nbsp; used in these models&nbsp; are highly aggregated over time and include diverse geologic regions, this criticism may not be unwarranted.&nbsp; Moreover, with highly aggregated data testable hypotheses relating to operator behavior at the field level are limited. Because of the somewhat decentralized&nbsp; nature of firm decision making, operator field behavior significantly affects the wildcat drilling rate and hence the interarrival times, i.e., temporal sequence, of expected discoveries.</p>","language":"English ","publisher":"Southern Economic Association","doi":"10.2307/1057299","usgsCitation":"Attanasi, E., and Drew, L.J., 1977, Field expectations and the determination of wildcat drilling: Southern Economic Journal, v. 44, no. 1, p. 53-67, https://doi.org/10.2307/1057299.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"53","endPage":"67","costCenters":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":357448,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"44","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Attanasi, Emil D. 0000-0001-6845-7160 attanasi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6845-7160","contributorId":198728,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Attanasi","given":"Emil D.","email":"attanasi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":745389,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Drew, L. The aquifer is not being recharged significantly by leakage near the center of the cone, nor is major recharge induced in the updip subcrop area. The source of pumped water is apparently an area of about 65 km<sup>2</sup> northwest of Dover, where vertical leakage is substantial. Their source is a large volume of rock from which the uranium has been leached. The geochemical mobilities and half lives of uranium and its daughter products vary widely so that they are transported from the source rocks, at different rates, along the migration path to their ultimate site. The radioactive disequilibrium resulting from this process has been well documented in the immediate vicinity of ore deposits, and disequilibrium is commonly recorded on gamma-ray logs up the hydraulic gradient from uranium ore. Little is known about the state of secular equilibrium in the leached host rocks, which often represent the only part of the migration path that is at or near the surface and is thus most accessible to the exploration geophysicist. High-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry provides a means of investigating the disequilibrium associated with uranium leaching and migration. Direct measurement of uranium can be made by this method, and the equivalent weight percents can be determined for six of the seven daughter-product decay groups that characterize the state of radioactive equilibrium. The technique has been used quantitatively in laboratory studies, where the results compare favorably with radiochemical analyses; field experiments suggest that semi-quantitative data may be obtained at the outcrop.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R.M., and Tanner, A.B., 1977, High-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry in uranium exploration: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 5, no. 6, p. 783-785.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"783","endPage":"785","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":272955,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":272954,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1977/vol5issue6/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"26.7 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"volume":"5","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51a72369e4b09db86f875cf9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, Robert M.","contributorId":56210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":479064,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tanner, Allan B.","contributorId":11611,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tanner","given":"Allan","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":479063,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Those advantages include support for a long-term staff plan that recognizes substantial staff changes through system development and implementation, a fiscal plan that provides continuity in resources necessary for total system development, and a feedback system which allows the user to communicate his experiences in using the system. Thus far balance between system development and system production has not been achieved because of continuing large-scale spatial data processing requirements coupled with strong and insistent demands from users for immediately deliverable products from the system. That imbalance has refocussed staffing and fiscal plans from long-term system development to short- and near-term production requirements, continuously extends total system development time, and increases the possibility that later system development may reduce the usefulness of current interim products.","language":"English","publisher":"UlS. Using the material flow law parameters for olivine, stress profiles with depth and strain rate are computed for a representative range of temperature distributions in the lithosphere. The results show that the upper 15 to 25 km of the oceanic lithosphere must behave elastically or fail by fracture and that the remainder deforms by exponential law flow at intermediate depths and by power-law flow in the rest. A model computation of the gravitational sliding of a lithospheric plate using olivine rheology exhibits a very sharp decoupling zone which is a consequence of the combined effects of increasing stress and temperature on the flow law, which is a very sensitive function of both. ?? 1977 Birkha??user Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Birkha??user-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF01637106","issn":"00334553","usgsCitation":"Kirby, S.H., 1977, State of stress in the lithosphere: Inferences from the flow laws of olivine: Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH, v. 115, no. 1-2, p. 245-258, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01637106.","startPage":"245","endPage":"258","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":203689,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":19047,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF01637106"}],"volume":"115","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dfe4b07f02db5e3b89","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kirby, S. Surface features, including large basins, crater-like depressions, and a linear valley, have been recognized from recent ground-based radar images. Pictures of the surface acquired by the USSR's Venera 9 and 10 show abundant boulders and apparent wind erosion. On the Pioneer Venus 1978 Orbiter mission, the radar mapper experiment will determine surface heights, dielectric constant values and small-scale slope values along the sub-orbital track between 50??S and 75??N. This experiment will also estimate the global shape and provide coarse radar images (40-80 km identification resolution) of part of the surface. Gravity data will be obtained by radio tracking. Maps combining radar altimetry with spacecraft and ground-based images will be made. A fluxgate magnetometer will measure the magnetic fields around Venus. The radar and gravity data will provide clues to the level of crustal differentiation and tectonic activity. The magnetometer will determine the field variations accurately. Data from the combined experiments may constrain the dynamo mechanism; if so, a deeper understanding of both Venus and Earth will be gained. ?? 1977 D. The ages and petrogenetic relations among five of the six recognized units have been investigated by rubidiumstrontium and oxygen isotope analysis of whole rocks and separated minerals. Whole-rock samples from three syenite units are consistent with a single Rb-Sr isochron which gives an age of 198??3 m.y. and an initial (87Sr/86Sr)o ratio of 0.70330??0.00016 (??2 sigma; ??=1.42?? 10-11y-1). However, Sr isotope data for two other units, nepheline syenite and granite, are not consistent with this isochron but rather indicate higher initial ratios which range from 0.7033 to about 0.707. Whole-rock O isotope analyses give ??18O values which range from+6.2 to+9.3??? Sr and O isotope analyses on mineral separates indicate that observed whole-rock variations in (87Sr/86Sr)o are primary and are not due to any secondary process. The fact that the isotope systematics correlate with rock type, suggests that crustal interaction is likely to have played a significant role in the development of this over-and undersaturated association. Such process(es), while still not fully delineated, could be of fundamental importance to the genesis of associations of critically undersaturated and oversaturated intrusives. The data support the idea that interaction between magmas and crustal materials strongly influenced the compositional relations of similar complexes elsewhere including those of the White Mountain magma series. ?? 1977 Springer-Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00371061","issn":"00107999","usgsCitation":"Foland, K., and Friedman, I., 1977, Application of Sr and O isotope relations to the petrogenesis of the alkaline rocks of the Red Hill complex, New Hampshire, USA: Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, v. 65, no. 2, p. 213-225, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00371061.","startPage":"213","endPage":"225","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":19026,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00371061"},{"id":203524,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"65","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67ab87","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foland, K.A.","contributorId":13357,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foland","given":"K.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":346545,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Friedman, I.","contributorId":95596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":346546,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In the Livermore well, four measurements at depths between 110 and 155 m indicate that the least principal compressive stress is horizontal and increases from 1.62 to 2.66 MPa. The apparent direction of maximum compression is N 70?? E (??40??). At the San Ardo site the least principal stress is that due to the overburden weight. At depths of 240.2 and 270.7 m the minimum and maximum horizontal stresses are estimated to be 11.4 and 22.5 MPa, and 12.0 (??1.1) and 15.8 (??3.3) MPa, respectively. From an impression of the fracture at 240.2 m, the direction of maximum compression appears to be about N 15?? E. The rock in the Menlo Park well is too highly fractured to yield a reliable measurement of the horizontal stresses. The data indicate, however, that the least principal stress is vertical (due to the overburden weight) to a depth of 250 m. ?? 1977 Birkha??user Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Birkha??user-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF01637101","issn":"00334553","usgsCitation":"Zoback, M.D., Healy, J.H., and Roller, J., 1977, Preliminary stress measurements in central California using the hydraulic fracturing technique: Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH, v. 115, no. 1-2, p. 135-152, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01637101.","startPage":"135","endPage":"152","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":203362,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":19054,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF01637101"}],"volume":"115","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aace4b07f02db66a62e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zoback, Mark D.","contributorId":80275,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zoback","given":"Mark","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":346627,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Healy, J.
