Water-resources investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado consist of collecting water-resources data and conducting interpretive hydro-logic investigations. The water-resources data and the results of the investigations are published or released by either the U.S. Geological Survey or by cooperating agencies. This report describes the water-resources investigations in Colorado for the 1977 fiscal year (October 1, 1976, to September 30, 1977).
The U.S. Geological Survey's investigations of the water-resources of Colorado are under the direction of James E. Biesecker, District Chief. The Colorado District office is located in Building 53, Denver Federal Center, Lakewood, Colo. (fig. 1). The Colorado District has four subdistrict offices located in Grand Junction, Lakewood, Meeker, and Pueblo (fig. 1).

Two specific areas of investigation include: measurements of the quality and quantity of water in the irrigation canals and drainage system and the diel (during a 24-hour period) variation of water-quality parameters in the main stem of Bear Creek. The irrigation and drainage study involves 25 sites in canals and natural drainageways. One hundred thirty-three samples were collected for analysis, and discharge was determined at the time of collection. The diel study includes six sites on Bear Creek. On August 23-24, four parameters were monitored at all six sites during a 24-hour period.

The study was partly supported by the Bureau of Land Management through an interagency agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under which a multi-year program responding to the needs of petroleum development of the Alaskan continental shelf is managed by the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP) Office. The objective of this study is to provide an assessment of the biological patterns of the region as related to petroleum development. Future offshore oil leases proposed by the State of Alaska and the Federal Government require a biological data base from which impact statements can be derived.
Samples used in this report were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in August 1974 from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Burton Island under the direction of Arthur Grantz. Sampling was conducted using van Veen grabs, gravity cores, dart cores, and bottom dredges. Only the van Veen grabs contained material useful for this study. At present 103 samples containing 90 species have been examined.

Synthesized flood discharges derived through use of long-term (60-70 year) rainfall and evaporation data, provide a more representative time base than do short-term (5-15 year) discharge records obtained by conventional stream gaging techniques. The rainfall, discharge, and evaporation data for use with rainfall-runoff models are stored in the Unit and Daily Values Files. Any of these data which were collected during the current or immediately preceding water year are stored on direct access, online disk files. Older data are stored in sequential files on magnetic tapes. Both the disks and tapes contain short-term data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for calibration of models and long-term data for use in synthesis of long-term flood records. Information in this report provides guidelines for the assembly, storage, and retrieval of data needed to use these models, and also provides description and documentation of computer programs for model calibration and flood-record synthesis. Hydrologic and geothermal data were collected for each well or spring site. The data includes depth, chemical quality, temperature and specific conductance of water, quantity of flow, well construction, and well logs. These data show that the normal temperature gradient in the ground is about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) per 100 feet. The temperature gradient in the thermal areas is as high as 24.4 degrees Celsius (44 degrees Fahrenheit) per 100 feet. The highest temperature measured for all the wells and springs was 142.2 degrees Celsius (288 degrees Fahrenheit). The chemical quality of water in the study area is generally good except in areas where water evaporates from land surface at Owens Valley playa or where steam escapes into the atmosphere from land surface. The water quality on the three reservations is generally good; however, the water is at or near land surface in several areas. This shallow water could be subject to contamination by animal waste, septic tanks, or farming operations. Historical hydrologic data were obtained from government agencies and private individuals, and all wells and springs on the reservations were visited. Observation wells were drilled at two of the sites, and water samples were collected from the wells. Sites were established on selected streams to collect water samples and to measure streamflow. Sufficient data have not been collected at this time to determine in detail the baseline quality of water in the selected streams or the rate, direction, and velocity of movement of percolating effluents. However, theoretical concepts and data collected to date suggest that effluent percolating near Colter Bay Village is most likely moving westward and southwestward toward Swan Lake and Colter Bay. Effluent percolating near Moose is most likely moving southeastward and southward toward the Snake River. Effluents near Flagg Ranch and Huckleberry Hot Springs probably discharge into the Snake River and Polecat Creek, but the amounts are small. Rainfall and runoff data, collected for 9 years on a seasonal basis (April through September), were used to calibrate a rainfall-runoff model on each of 22 small basins. Long-term records of runoff volume and peak discharge were synthesized for these 22 basins. Flood volumes and flood peaks of specific recurrence intervals (2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years) were then related to basin characteristics with a high degree of correlation. Flood volumes were related to drainage area, maximum relief, and basin slope. Flood peaks were related to drainage area, maximum relief, basin slope, and channel slope. An investigation of ponding behind a highway embankment, with available storage capacity and with a culvert to allow outflow, has shown that the single fast-rising peak is most important in culvert design. Consequently, a dimensionless hydrograph defines the characteristic shape of flood hydrographs to be expected from small drainage basins in Wyoming. For design purposes, a peak and volume can be estimated from basin characteristics and used with the dimensionless hydrograph to produce a synthetic single-peak hydrograph. Incremental discharges of the hydrograph can be routed along a channel, where a highway fill and culvert are to be placed, to help determine the most economical size of culvert if embankment storage is to be considered. The objectives were to estimate the density and porosity of the formations penetrated, and to determine the precision and repeatability of borehole gravity data in shallow wells. A detailed account of field techniques and analysis of data quality has been given by Byerley (1977). This report tabulates the borehole gravity data collected, and presents densities and porosities computed from the subsurface gravity data.

Synthetic-hydrologic techniques were used; and the 100-year flood stage was estimated to be at an elevation of 2,849.3 feet above mean sea level. Channel dimensions were measured at 59 sites in Lucerne Valley. Dranage area-discharge relations developed from channel-geometry data for sites nearby were used to estimate the discharge at 12 additional sites where channel geometry could not be measured. In order to compute the total volume discharge into the playa, the peak discharges were converted to volumes. From the Apple Valley report (Busby, 1975) the equation formulated from the relation between peak discharge and flood volume for the deserts of California was used to compute the flood volumes for routing into Lucerne Lake. The well penetrated four sand and gravel strata of low water-yielding capacity and extended 37 ft into metamorphic bedrock. Earth water-bearing stratum was pumped for several hours, and the best aquifer yield was found to be 1.7 gal/min/ft of drawdown. These test results support the conclusion, previously inferred from drilling data at a nearby test hole drilled in 1973, that there are no confined aquifers of large yield in the subsurface at this locality. Samples were collected from the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Mississippi River at Southwest Pass, Mississippi River at New Orleans, Bayou Rigaud near Grand Isle, Barataria Bay and Waterway, Bayou La Carpe near Houma, Atchafalaya Bay (Ship Channel), Lower Atchafalaya River area, Intracoastal Waterway near Calumet, Intracoastal Waterway (Port Allen to Morgan City), Petite Anse area, and Calcasieu River and Ship Channel. These studies were conductd to determine potential environmental effects of dredging activities in the waterways. The Geological survey collected, treated, and analyzed 383 water and water-sediment mixture samples from 85 dredging sites and 142 postdredging samples (72 sites). Water samples were collected 100 yards upstream and downstream from the dredge effluent, from the disposal area, and from the effluent outfall during the dredge phase of the study; samples were collected at former dredge sites during the postdredging phase. Samples were analyzed for selected metals, pesticides, nutrients, and organic constituents. The analytical data are presented in tables. Sampling sites are shown on maps. Core material from all river sites and one bay site was collected to a depth of 50 feet (15 meters). At the remaining bay sites, samples were collected to a depth of less than 6 inches (15 centimeters) using a pipe dredge. Core material and native water were analyzed (separately and as elutriate samples prepared from mixtures) for selected metals, nutrients, organic compounds, and physical characteristics. No interpretation of the data is given.
