The data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey Bureau, to provide information on variation and movement of agricultural chemicals in the hydrologic cycle in the basin. Precipitation, surface-water, and ground-water data were collected.</p>\n<p>Rainfall recorded during water year 1990 at a monitoring site on Roberts Creek totaled 43.67 inches. The greatest monthly rainfall (14.45 inches) occurred in August. Calcium and sulfate were the predominant ions in the rain, and the median concentrations of nitrate and ammonia as nitrogen were 0.35 and 0.48 milligrams per liter, respectively.</p>\n<p>Stream discharge, specific conductance, pH, and water temperature were monitored continuously, and monthly water-quality samples were collected at three sites in the basin. The predominant ions in samples from Roberts Creek at the point where it leaves the basin were calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. Nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen concentrations in 42 samples ranged from less than 0.10 to 18 milligrams per liter. Pesticide concentrations in 34 samples ranged from less than 0.10 to 12 micrograms per liter. Alachlor was detected in 56 percent of the samples; atrazine in 100 percent; cyanazine in 68 percent; and metolachlor in 47 percent.</p>\n<p>At Big Spring, the ground-water discharge point, the daily mean specific conductance ranged from 378 to 796 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius, the daily median pH ranged from 6.5 to 7.2, and the daily mean water temperature ranged from 5.5 to 11.5 degrees Celsius. Calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate generally were the predominant ions in solution. Concentrations of nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen in 32 samples ranged from 3.4 to 16 milligrams per liter. Alachlor was detected in 22 percent of the samples; atrazine in 100 percent; cyanazine in 44 percent, and metplachlor in 6 percent. The maximum atrazine concentration was 4.5 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>During a low-flow seepage study, May 29 and 30,1990, the measured discharge lost by streams in the basin was 8.56 cubic feet per second, the measured dissolved nitrogen load lost was 0.29 ton per day, and the measured atrazine load lost was 0.028 pound per day. In order to assess alternatives to agricultural drains, a three-dimensional, finite-difference numerical model of the regional ground-water flow system was developed. This report documents the mathematical approach used to model the flow system, the data base on which the model is based, and the methods used to calibrate the model.</p><p>The 550-square-mile study area includes the Panoche Creek alluvial fan and parts of the Little Panoche Creek and Cantua Creek alluvial fans. The model simulates transient flow in the semiconfined and confined zones above and below the Corcoran Clay Member of the Tulare Formation of Pleistocene age. The model incorporates areally distributed groundwater recharge, areally and vertically distributed pumping, regional-collector drains in the Westlands Water District (operative from 1980 to 1985), on-farm drains in parts of the Panoche, Broadview, and Firebaugh Water Districts, and bare-soil evaporation (which occurs if the water table is within 7 feet of land surface). The model also incorporates textural based estimates of hydraulic conductivity, with texture defined as the fraction of coarse-grained deposits present in a given subsurface interval.</p><p>The numerical model was developed using hydro-logic data from 1972 to 1988. Most of the parameters incorporated into the model were evaluated independent of the model including system geometry, the distribution of texture, the altitudes of the water table and potentiometric surface of the confined zone in 1972 (initial condition), the hydraulic conductivity of coarse-grained deposits derived from the Coast Ranges, the hydraulic conductivity of coarse-grained deposits derived from the Sierra Nevada, specific storage, recharge, pumping, and parameters needed to incorporate drains and bare-soil evaporation. Four parameters were calibration variables: the hydraulic conductivity of fine-grained deposits in the semiconfined zone, the hydraulic conductivity of the Corcoran Clay Member, specific yield, and the transmissivity of the confined zone.</p><p>The model was calibrated in two phases. In the first phase, a steady-state model of the ground-water flow system in 1984 was used to constrain the relation between the hydraulic conductivity of fine-grained deposits in the semiconfined zone and the hydraulic conductivity of the Corcoran Clay Member, thus reducing the number of independent variables from four to three. In the second phase of calibration, the change in altitude of the water table from 1972 to 1984, the change in altitude of the potentiometric surface of the confined zone from 1972 to 1984, and the number of model cells subject to bare-soil evaporation from 1972 to 1988 were used to evaluate the remaining three variables.</p><p>The calibrated model reproduces the average change in water-table altitude (1972-84) to within 0.4 foot (average measured change 11.5 feet) and the average change in confined zone head (1972-84) to within 19 feet (average measured change 120 feet). The simulated time-series record of the total number of model cells subject to bare-soil evaporation (each cell is 1 mile square) is within the range of the measured data. The measured values are at a minimum in October and a maximum in July. The October values ranged from 103 in 1972 to 132 in 1984 (the drains were closed in 1985) to 151 in 1988. The July values ranged from 144 in 1973 to 198 in 1984, to 204 in 1988. Measurements taken at 15-minute intervals included near-surface and near-bottom specific conductance; near-surface water temperature; and near-surface, mid-depth, and near-bottom dissolved-oxygen concentrations. In the Pamlico River estuary, salinities generally ranged from near zero to about 20 parts per thousand during the period April 1989 through September 1991; however, unnaturally high salinities (up to about 51 parts per thousand) were observed at one site on July 11, 1990. Recorded water temperatures in the Pamlico River were between 0 and 33 degrees Celsius during the measurement period. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from less than 1 to 20 milligrams per liter. In the Neuse River estuary, salinities ranged from less than 0.1 to nearly 33 parts per thousand between May 1989 and September 1991. During the same period, recorded water temperatures in this estuary were between 0 and 33 degrees Celsius. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from less than 1 to 21 milligrams per liter. Instantaneous values for selected periods are summarized in a series of box plots. Daily mean values of salinity, water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentrations, and dissolved oxygen, percent saturation, are presented in tables and graphs, as are 5-day mean values for day and night conditions. estimating peak-flow frequency relations for North Dakota streams","docAbstract":"<p>This report presents techniques for estimating peak-flow frequency relations for North Dakota streams.&nbsp; In addition, a generalized skew coefficient analysis was completed for North Dakota to test the validity of using the generalized skew coefficient map in Bulletin 17B of the Hydrology Subcommittee of the Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data, 1982, \"Guidelines for Determining Flood Flow Frequency.\"&nbsp; The analysis indicates that the generalized skew coefficient map in Bulletin 17B provides accurate estimates of generalized skew coefficient values for natural-flow streams in North Dakota.</p><p>&nbsp;Peak-flow records through 1988 for 192 continuous- and partial-record streamflow gaging stations that had 10 or more years of record were used in a generalized least-squares regression analysis that relates peak flows for selected recurrence intervals to selected basin characteristics.&nbsp; Peak-flow equations were developed for recurrence intervals of 2, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100, and 500 years for three hydrologic regions in North Dakota.&nbsp; The peak-flow equations are applicable to natural-flow streams that have drainage areas of less than or equal to 1,000 square miles.&nbsp; The standard error of estimate for the three hydrologic regions ranges from 60 to 70 percent for the 100-year peak-flow equations.</p><p>&nbsp;Methods are presented for transferring peak-flow data from gaging stations to ungaged sites on the same stream and for determining peak flows for ungaged sites on ungaged streams.&nbsp; Peak-flow relations, weighted estimates of peak flow, and selected basin characteristics are tabulated for the 192 gaging stations used in the generalized skew coefficient and regression analyses.&nbsp; Peak-flow relations also are provided for 63 additional gaging stations that were not used in the generalized skew coefficient and regression analyses.&nbsp; These 63 gaging stations generally represent streams that are significantly controlled by regulation and those that have drainage areas greater than 1,000 square Landsat digital satellite images for March and July 1989 were combined and classified to identify the areas of crops irrigated with water from the Edwards aquifer in the two counties. Normalized difference, the difference between the infrared and red reflectance values divided by the total of those values, was used to discriminate vegetative from nonvegetative ground cover. The images subsequently were classified using maximum likelihood, an unsupervised classification procedure. Detailed vegetation distribution maps of two calibration sites in the study area, and boundaries of the areas probably irrigated in 1989, helped to interpret the results and to separate probable irrigated areas from the rest of the image.</p>\n<p>Results were verified using crop acreages reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). The total areas for all irrigated crops estimated using remote-sensing data were about 8 percent higher for Uvalde County and about 4 percent higher for Medina County than the areas reported by the ASCS. Irrigated-crop areas subsequently were multiplied by the respective duties of water to calculate the total quantity of water pumped from the aquifer for irrigation. Increased pumpage could cause further salinization </span><span>of the ground-water resources. </span></p><p><span>The Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers can be considered potential water-supply sources for the Savannah, Ga., area, on the basis of historic stream flow records and water-quality constituents and properties examined. Analyses of stream-discharge data indicate that the minimum average discharges for 7 consecutive days for a 10-year recurrence interval (7010), was 5,460 cubic feet per second (ft3/s) at Savannah River near Clyo, Ga., and 192 ft3/s at Ogeechee River near Eden, Ga. For example, 90 percent of the time, flows in excess of the 7010 discharges are about 900 and 200 ft3/s, respectively. However, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, imposes a non-depletable flow criterion; thus, the actual quantity of water available for withdrawal probably would be less than flows in excess of minimum flow criteria, such as the 7Q10.</span></p><div class=\"page\" data-page-number=\"11\" data-loaded=\"true\"><div class=\"textLayer\"><span>A ground-water flow model was developed and used in conjunction with other previously calibrated </span><span>models in the coastal area to simulate the effects of additional pumping on water levels near sites of seawater </span><span>encroachment at Hilton Head Island and saltwater intrusion at Brunswick. Based on model simulations and the </span><span>constraint of preventing water-level declines at locations of encroachment and intrusion, the potential of the </span><span>Upper Floridan aquifer to supply additional water in the Savannah area is limited under present (1985) </span><span>hydrologic conditions. The water-supply potential ranges from less than 1 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) in </span><span>Liberty, McIntosh, most of Bryan, and southern Chatham Counties, Ga., and in southern Beaufort County, S.C., </span><span>to more than 5 Mgal/d in northern Jasper and northern Beaufort Counties, S.C. Because of the limited water-</span><span>supply potential, hypothetical alternatives involving redistributions, redistributions and small increases, and </span><span>decreases in pumpage were simulated to determine the effects on water levels. These simulations indicate that </span><span>reductions and redistributions of pumping would not adversely affect water levels at locations of encroachment </span><span>and intrusion. This dredging will have an effect on ground-water levels in a wetland area near the river. The river cuts into a sandy aquifer that is confined by an overlying clay layer. Ground water in the confined aquifer flows from a ridge on the north side of the study area toward the river, Estimates of aquifer transmissivity range from 3,300 to 18,800 feet squared per day.\r\n\r\nAssuming a 3-foot decline in stream stage due to dredging, the maximum decline in ground-water levels would be about 2.4 feet at low flow. Ground-water levels in the aquifer would decline by at least 2 feet at a distance of 0.5 mile from the river within 60 days after the change in stream stage, regardless of the assumed transmissivity value. Water-level declines in the upper clay layer probably would be much smaller.
