Chemical analyses of bottom materials indicated detectable concentrations of the insecticides chlordane, dieldrin, and DDT at most of the 17 stream sites sampled. Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCB's) were found in more than half the samples, and the lead concentration on one stream was significantly higher than at the other sites. The six lakes studied are similar in bedrock geology, climate, and algal types and numbers. Minor differences in the chemistry of the lakes is attributable to the presence or absence of marble (calcium carbonate) in the gneissic basins, septic loadings of soluble constituents, or runoff containing salt from winter road deicing. The lakes probably receive most of their water by direct runoff and groundwater seepage rather than from major streams. All six lakes can be classed as eutrophic on the basis of algal type and density, dissolved-oxygen distribution, and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Hydrologic and geothermal data were collected for each well or spring site. The data includes depth, chemical quality, temperature and specific conductance of water, quantity of flow, well construction, and well logs. These data show that the normal temperature gradient in the ground is about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) per 100 feet. The temperature gradient in the thermal areas is as high as 24.4 degrees Celsius (44 degrees Fahrenheit) per 100 feet. The highest temperature measured for all the wells and springs was 142.2 degrees Celsius (288 degrees Fahrenheit). The chemical quality of water in the study area is generally good except in areas where water evaporates from land surface at Owens Valley playa or where steam escapes into the atmosphere from land surface. High-gradient channels, which generally exhibit low variability for most factors influencing the width-discharge relation, were selected to define a standard exponent in the power-function equation. Regression analysis of silt-clay channels of Kansas gave an exponent similar to that determined for high-gradient streams, thus supporting the use of a standard exponent.</p><p>To account for the effect of sediment on channel morphology, silt-clay percentages of bed and bank material from 98 perennial streams of the western and midwestern United States were introduced into the standard width-discharge relations. Bed and bank cohesiveness, as indicated by silt-clay content, is considered a measure of channel resistance to erosion. Multiple-regression analysis of data limited to Kansas streams yielded an equation more typical of stable conditions than that of the larger area, because widespread destructive flooding and channel widening have not occurred in Kansas recently. The regression equations provide refinement to the channel-geometry technique of estimating discharge characteristics of ungaged basins. This shallow water could be subject to contamination by animal waste, septic tanks, or farming operations. Historical hydrologic data were obtained from government agencies and private individuals, and all wells and springs on the reservations were visited. This report summarizes the data collected and the findings of the study. Also included in the report are data on municipal, public, and industrial water-supply facilities. Records of water levels in areas of heavy pumpage and in areas where changes are principally due to natural influences are illustrated or tabulated to allow comparison between these types of water-level fluctuations. Water levels and related data provide a record for the evaluation of available ground-water supplies. The long-term records serve as a framework to which short-term records may be related. </p><p>This report is written for persons, municipalities, industries, institutions, consultants, drillers, and Measurements for the preceding 4 years are included to serve as references illustrating declining or rising water levels. Changes in water levels from December 1975 to March 1977 ranged from a rise of 12.4 feet (3.8 meters) to a decline of 10.8 feet (3.3 meters). Water levels appear to be declining in the eastern part of the study area and stable to slightly rising in the western part. These data can be used by well owners for planning their irrigation schedules for the next irrigation season and can be used by water managers for developing plans to manage the ground-water resources. Most of the volcanic units sampled are shown on the U.S. Geological Survey geologic map of the Timber Mountain caldera area (I-891) and are described in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 919.
