These studies, initiated in 1974 in Colorado by the U.S. Geological Survey, have indicated that a new look at areas containing long dormant mines and prospects may well lead to the discovery of minable Precambrian sulfide deposits. The zinc, copper, and lead contents of ores investigated to date, supplemented by silver and gold contents, indicate that many long-forgotten deposits are minable in terms of grade. The deposits occur in Precambrian rocks metamorphosed to the lower amphibolite facies in one major region and to the upper amphibolite facies in other regions. Field studies have provided ample evidence indicating that the search for commercial tonnages can he facilitated by using newer concepts of economic geology regarding ore-host rock associations as prospecting guides and by using structural considerations aimed toward learning how metamorphism and folding have modified the shapes and distribution of the ore bodies. A newly recognized concept, originating from the current studies by the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, concerns the potential economic significance of gahnite, a zinc spinel. The field and laboratory data indicate that gahnite can be used by geologists as a prospector's guide to ore and can be considerd by mining engineers as a potential major ore mineral, contributing significant amounts of zinc to the sulfide ores in many of the deposits. Studies to date indicate that the Gunnison area, the Salida area, and the Guffey area are particularly favorable to the search for minable deposits, and the potential is equally present in many other areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77607","usgsCitation":"Sheridan, D.M., and Raymond, W.H., 1977, Preliminary data on some Precambrian deposits of zinc-copper-lead sulfides and zinc spinel (granite) in Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-607, ii, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77607.","productDescription":"ii, 27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143534,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0607/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":393763,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0607/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -104,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -104,\n              41\n            ],\n            [\n              -109,\n              41\n            ],\n            [\n              -109,\n              37\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c52c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sheridan, Douglas M.","contributorId":13966,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sheridan","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162592,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Raymond, William H.","contributorId":48555,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Raymond","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162593,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

At least 13 of these sources are known to contain high acidity and (or) trace-element concentrations or to contribute water to adversely affected streams. From January 1976 to March 1977, drainage from the Argo Tunnel in Idaho Springs--one of the major metal-mine drainage sources in the study area--exhibited variations in discharge from 0.35 to 0.55 cubic feet per second (0.010 to 0.016 cubic meters per second), a relatively constant temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, and variations in specific conductance from 2,680 to 3,410 micromhos per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius (though a value of about 3,100 micromhos persisted throughout most of the period of record). High, but relatively constant, total concentrations (in micrograms per liter) of arsenic (100 to 180), cadmium (140 to 170), copper (5,000 to 6,000), iron (160,000 to 200,000), lead (less than 100 to 200), manganese (80,000 to 110,000), and zinc (40,000 to 49,000) were measured in the Argo Tunnel drainage from March 1976 to March 1977. Except for lead, the trace elements were mostly dissolved (82 percent or greater) and appear to represent baseline concentrations. Long-term degradation of water flowing from the Argo Tunnel is shown by increases of at least 2.5 to 8.0 times for dissolved solids, dissolved iron, calcium, magnesium, and sulfate since 1906. The acidity has changed from neutral in 1906 to a median pH value of 2.9 in 1976-77. Comparison of current Argo Tunnel data with those collected previously by other investigators indicates that spring chemical flushes containing higher than baseline trace-element concentrations occurred in 1973 and 1974, but not in 1975 or 1976, and probably not in 1972. The spring chemical flushes appear to be associated with increased infiltration from snowmelt in the catchment of the Argo Tunnel. Because of the wide ranges in mine-drainage quality and quantity expected for discharges from abandoned mines in the study area, each situation must be examined  individually, and the management alternative chosen for mine-drainage abatement must be tailored to solve the particular mining and hydrologic problems at a given site.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Water and Related Land Resources Management Study","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr77734","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District, Omaha, Nebraska","usgsCitation":"Wentz, D.A., 1977, Quantity and quality of drainage from the Argo Tunnel and other sources related to metal mining in Gilpin, Clear Creek and Park Counties, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-734, iv, 61 leaves :ill., maps; Volume V: Supporting Technical Reports Appendices; Appendix F: USGS Mine Drainage Study; 27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77734.","productDescription":"iv, 61 leaves :ill., maps; Volume V: Supporting Technical Reports Appendices; Appendix F: USGS Mine Drainage Study; 27 cm.","numberOfPages":"128","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144951,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_77_734.png"},{"id":254517,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0734/ofr77-0734.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Gilpin County;Clear Creek County;Park County","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64adf5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wentz, Dennis A. dawentz@usgs.gov","contributorId":1838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wentz","given":"Dennis","email":"dawentz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":163482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report brings together available information on the occurrence, age, and paleoecologic, significance of benthonic foraminifers and presents correlations based on these data from 16 measured stratigraphic sections and 12 exploratory wells. Relatively few reports employing modern taxonomic methods developed during the past 40 years have been published on foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the Gulf of Alaska. Reports by Cushman (1941), Cushman and Todd (1947), Tappan (1951), Todd (1953), Loeblich and Tappan (1953), Todd (1957), Rau (1963), Cooper (1964), and Todd and Low (1967) are primarily concerned with taxonomy, ecology and paleoecology, or the geologic age of assemblages from isolated outcrops. Almost no data have been published on foraminiferal correlations of measured sections and wells. The paucity of such information has prompted the synthesis and interpretation of foraminiferal data that provide the framework of correlation presented in this report. Some of the benthonic provincial stages that have been assigned to lower and middle parts of the Tertiary of other west coast areas are recognized for the Gulf of Alaska. Divisions for the upper part of the Tertiary are broad, but specific faunal occurrences are recognized as possible aids to correlations. Regional correlations presented in this report are necessarily broad and may be modified and redefined when new data become available from the current round of exploratory drilling for petroleum in the offshore part of the Gulf of Alaska Tertiary Province.

It is anticipated that this report will be of particular interest to readers associated with petroleum exploration. As a convenience to them and because most foraminiferal data from wells, including those of this report, are from cuttings, all checklists are arranged to show plainly the highest occurrence of each species within each measured section and well. Furthermore, in conformity with these data, all sections and wells are described from the top to bottom. The text describes the stratigraphic and paleoecologic significance of foraminifers by biostratigraphic units and by individual sections and wells.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77747","usgsCitation":"Rau, W.W., Plafker, G., and Winkler, G., 1977, Preliminary foraminiferal biostratigraphy and correlation of selected stratigraphic sections and wells in the Gulf of Alaska Tertiary province: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-747, Report: 54 p.; 3 Plates: 41.55 x 61.43 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77747.","productDescription":"Report: 54 p.; 3 Plates: 41.55 x 61.43 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424031,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424030,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424029,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424028,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144887,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0747/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Alaska Tertiary province","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -149.97116633018743,\n              61.50297682156986\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.97116633018743,\n              59.05829668369461\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.4228186787198,\n              59.05829668369461\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.4228186787198,\n              61.50297682156986\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.97116633018743,\n              61.50297682156986\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c35a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rau, Weldon W.","contributorId":95866,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rau","given":"Weldon","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161971,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161969,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Winkler, Gary R.","contributorId":75513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winkler","given":"Gary R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161970,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Ground water in the southwestern part of the Territory and in adjacent areas along the Niger River is also a potential source. The Niger and Benue Rivers are obvious sources of major supply for eventual large demands, and the Gurara River and sedimentary aquifers also may have that potential. A description of the procedures used at sea and in the laboratory and a short preliminary summary of the shipboard results also is included.

The involvement of Marine Geotechnical Laboratory (MGL), Lehigh University, personnel in the 1976 Atlantic Margin Coring Project can be divided into two phases. In Phase One, the Lehigh nuclear-transmission densitometer was rebuilt to process cores at sea more rapidly than previously had been done in the laboratory, the equipment was assembled and tested aboard the Glomar Conception, and at-sea geotechnical measurements were made during the duration of the cruise.

Data sheets were prepared for both unopened core sections (Appendix III) and split-core samples (Appendix IV). Completed data forms are on file at the MGL and at the Geological Survey in Woods Hole.

Phase Two included reduction of the shipboard data, testing of all geotechnical samples taken from cores split aboard the ship, and certain other analytical work ashore utilizing the geotechnical measurements. Water content and weight/volume bulk density tests were performed at the MGL. Specific gravity and Atterberg limit tests and certain calculations were performed by Geological Survey personnel at the Corpus Christi, Texas, laboratory.

During Phase One, 37 unopened, 1.5-m-long core sections were selected by Lehigh personnel for subsequent static and dynamic triaxial and consolidation testing ashore. The disposition of these cores is controlled by Geological Survey Project personnel; they are not further discussed in this report.

A depth convention has been adopted in this report for the convenience of labeling core sections and analyzing the data. Each 9.2-m-long (30 ft) core liner had a maximum penetration depth referenced to the water-sediment interface; these data are given in Hathaway, et al. (1976). Each 9.2-m-long core liner was cut into six or fewer sections, each 1.5 m (5 ft) in length, aboard the ship. To the maximum penetration depth, 0.2 m was subtracted to obtain the depth at the bottom of the first 1.5 m section above the core catcher. To obtain values at the bottom of the remaining 1.5 m sections, an additional 1.5 m was added for each section. The depth of the bottom of each core section was used for all values obtained using the nuclear densitometer. Tests within core sections and samples collected from core sections were assigned depths based on the location of the test or sample within the core section. It should be clearly recognized that all depths within a 9.2-m-long core are estimates of the true depth, which cannot be uniquely calculated because of the uncertainty of the relationship of sediment contained within the core liner to true in situ depths.

This report is considered to be preliminary because the author has not had access to the final lithologic logs or paleontological results, upon which a more accurate description of geotechnical results could be based. It would be inappropriate to comment on geological hazards until this information is made available.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr78123","usgsCitation":"Richards, A.F., 1977, Atlantic Margin Coring Project 1976: Preliminary Report on Shipboard and Some Laboratory Geotechnical data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-123, 165 p. in various pagings :ill. ;28 cm.; (166 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78123.","productDescription":"165 p. in various pagings :ill. ;28 cm.; (166 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":144827,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259889,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0123/ofr1978123.pdf","text":"Report","size":"4.06 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1978-123"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Atlantic Ocean","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -82.88,25.0 ], [ -82.88,42.64 ], [ -67.0,42.64 ], [ -67.0,25.0 ], [ -82.88,25.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","contact":"
Coastal and Marine Geology Program
U.S. Geological Survey
384 Woods Hole Road
Woods Hole, MA 02543
","tableOfContents":"

Foreword

Introduction

Core quality evaluation

Shipboard geotechnical tests

Laboratory geotechnical tests

Downhole density logging

Sedimentation-compression curve analysis

Results

References

Appendices

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aade4b07f02db66b33b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Richards, Adrian F.","contributorId":91114,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richards","given":"Adrian","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162071,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

When, used as total-count devices, the sondes are comparable in logging speed and counting rate with conventional scintillation detectors for locating zones of high radioactivity. When used with a multichannel analyzer, the sondes are detectors with such high resolution that individual lines from the complex spectra of the uranium and thorium series can be distinguished. Gamma rays from each group of the uranium series can be measured in ore zones permitting determination of the state of equilibrium at each measurement point. Series of 10-minute spectra taken at 0.3- to 0.5-m intervals in several holes showed zones where maxima from the uranium group and from the 222Rn group were displaced relative to each other. Apparent excesses of 230Th at some locations suggest that uranium-group concentrations at those locations were severalfold greater some tens of kiloyears, ago. At the current state of development a 10-minute count yields a sensitivity of about 80 ppm U308. Data reduction could in practice be accomplished in about 5 minutes. The result is practically unaffected by disequilibrium or radon contamination. In comparison with core assay, high-resolution spectrometry samples a larger volume; avoids problems due to incomplete core recovery, loss of friable material to drilling fluids, and errors in depth and marking; and permits use of less expensive drilling methods. Because gamma rays from the radionuclides are accumulated simultaneously, it also avoids the problems inherent in trying to correlate logs made in separate runs with different equipment.\r\n\r\nContinuous-motion delayed-gamma activation by a 163-?g 252Cf neutron source attached to the sonde yielded poor sensitivity. A better neutron-activation method, in which the sonde is moved in steps so as to place the detector at the previous activation point, could not be evaluated because of equipment failure.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77571","usgsCitation":"Tanner, A.B., Moxham, R.M., and Senftle, F.E., 1977, Assay for uranium and determination of disequilibrium by means of in situ high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-571, 22, 11 leaves :ill. Early effusives of the complex, although slightly altered, are probably chemically, and petrographically, more like the calc-alkalic Fraction Tuff (Miocene) of the northern Nellis Air Force Base Bombing and Gunnery Range to the north, whereas effusives of later Miocene age, such as the Paintbrush and Timber Mountain Tuffs, are alkali-calcic.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77724","usgsCitation":"Quinlivan, W.D., and Byers, F., 1977, Chemical data and variation diagrams of igneous rocks from the Timber Mountain-Oasis Valley Caldera Complex, southern Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-724, Report: ii, 9 p.; 14 Plates: 22.00 × 23.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77724.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 9 p.; 14 Plates: 22.00 × 23.00 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":94984,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94983,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94982,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94981,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94980,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94979,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94986,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94985,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405496,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14507.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38571,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143403,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":94992,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94991,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94990,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94989,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94988,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":94987,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0724/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Timber Mountain-Oasis Valley Caldera Complex","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -116.75,\n 36.75\n ],\n [\n -115.894,\n 36.75\n ],\n [\n -115.894,\n 37.367\n ],\n [\n -116.75,\n 37.367\n ],\n [\n -116.75,\n 36.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67bb5d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quinlivan, W. Rainfall is low and seasonal; consequently, most streams (wadis) are ephemeral. The natural flow regimens of many of the smaller wadis are modified by terracing for agriculture. The only streamflow data available in Yemen are short records on four large wadis. A brief field investigation and application of reconnaissance techniques are the bases for the largely qualitative description of the hydrology, and for the proposal to collect streamflow data needed for orderly development of the expanding economy. S. Geological Survey for 1977. Successful completion of these goals will aid the Nation in the years ahead because proper usage of coal resource data may lessen economic displacements resulting from the energy shortage.

This report is concerned only with one mineral fuel -- coal -- and only with coal resource investigations in the Geologic Division of the U. S. Geological Survey. Other divisions involved with coal or coal-related work are the Conservation, Water Resources, and Topographic Divisions. It is one of a series of reports on the energy resource studies conducted by the Geological Survey that provide a public record of the objectives, activities, and accomplishments of these programs. Similar reports have been prepared on oil and gas, oil shale, uranium, thorium, and energy-related industrial minerals.

This report includes descriptions of the program, each sub-element of the program, individual projects, and a selected list of program publications from 1970-76. It also describes how the program is responsive to Presidential pronouncements and Congressional mandates. The program is cooperative with several Federal bureaus, many state agencies, universities, and industry. This coordination assures that the program supplements the work of these interested groups and is not duplicative.

A scientific program such as the coal resource investigations is difficult for the non-involved person to understand solely from the existing reports on various studies made in the program. This report provides an explanation that the scientist, decision maker, personnel of other government agencies, and the layman can use to relate various activities and to gain a better understanding of the relation of coal to the Nation's requirements for energy and of the importance of a carefully planned program on this energy resource.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77763","usgsCitation":"1977, National coal resource investigations of the United States Geological Survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-763, 53 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77763.","productDescription":"53 p.","numberOfPages":"61","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":346198,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0763/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143806,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0763/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db6983fc","contributors":{"compilers":[{"text":"Wood, Gordon H. Three areas emerge as most favorable; each may contain many potential disposal sites. These large geologic study areas are further described on the basis of general structural and seismic considerations and are compared with respect to topography and mineral and water resources. \r\n\r\nA large area in west-central South Dakota is recommended for extensive further study. A smaller area in northeastern Colorado also may warrant additional investigation. A relatively small area in north-central North Dakota is also delineated, but currently is not proposed for further studies.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77776","usgsCitation":"Shurr, G.W., 1977, The Pierre Shale, northern Great Plains; a potential isolation medium for radioactive waste: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-776, ii, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77776.","productDescription":"ii, 27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":38902,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0776/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":395730,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74784.htm"},{"id":142465,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0776/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Great Plains, Pierre Shale","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -105,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -98,\n              39\n            ],\n            [\n              -98,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -105,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -105,\n              39\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67adfd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shurr, George W.","contributorId":78741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shurr","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
