catalog is reasonably complete through 1974; possible discrepancies with existing publications may exist, however, because the file was compiled over a long period of time and by a number of Temporal overlays combining Landsat band-5 data from October 1972 and 1974 were made by using the General Electric Image 100 system. The 1972 data were divided by the 1974 data, and low ratios indicate areas where land use and land cover had changed. These low ratios were classified into a land-use-change theme. A classification based on the use of the four bands of the multispectral scanner data, taken in 1974, yielded six land use categories: (1) Commercial-industrial-multifamily, (2) single-family residential, (3) cleared land, (4) open space, (5) forested land, and (6) water. Through the middle of 1977, the Center has supplied approximately 1.7 million copies of images from the more than 5 million images of the Earth's surface archived at the Center. Landsat accounted for half of these images plus approximately 5,800 computer-compatible tapes of Landsat data were also supplied to users. New methods for processing data products to make them more useful are being developed, and new accession aids for determining data availability are being placed in operation. The Center also provides assistance and training to resource specialists and land managers in the use of Landsat and other remotely sensed data. A Data Analysis Laboratory is operated at the Center to provide both digital and analog multispectral/multitemporal image analysis capabilities in support of the training and assistance programs. In addition to conventionally processed data products, radiometrically enhanced Landsat imagery are now available from the Center in limited quantities. In mid-1978, the Center will convert to an all-digital processing system for Landsat data that will provide improved products for user analysis in production quantities. The Department of Interior and NASA are currently studying concepts that use communication satellites to relay Landsat data between U.S. ground stations, Goddard Space Flight Center and the EROS Data Center which would improve the timeliness of data availability. Most of the analyses selected were based on the pollutant loads predicted by the Storage, Treatment, Overflow, and Runoff Model (STORM). Five different basins were selected for sampling, and samples were collected three times in each basin. At 298.15 K the enthalpies of formation, <span>&Delta;</span><i>H</i><span>&deg;<sub>f,298</sub></span>, for low albite, analbite, NaAlSi<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> glass, gibbsite (<span>Al(OH)</span><sub>3</sub>), and NaAlO<sub>2</sub> are -3 935 115&plusmn;3415, -3 924 235&plusmn;3640, -3 875 455&plusmn;3700, &plusmn;1293130&plusmn;1190, and 1135 990&plusmn;1255 J mol<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Our values for the enthalpies of formation of low albite, analbite, and for <span>NaAlSi</span><sub>3</sub><span>O</span><sub>8</sub>&nbsp;glass are approximately 13 810 J <span>mol</span><sup>-1</sup>&nbsp;more negative than the values calculated by D. R. Waldbaum in 1968. Our value for the enthalpy of formation of gibbsite at 298.15 K is 11234 J more negative than the value of R. Barany and K. K. Kelley obtained in 1961. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation, &Delta;<i>G</i>&deg;<sub>f,298</sub>&nbsp;for low albite, analbite, and gibbsite calculated from the above enthalpies and the appropriate entropy data are -3 711 715&plusmn;3435, -3 706 500&plusmn;3660, and -1154 890&plusmn;1200 J <span>mol</span><sup>-1</sup>, respectively. The enthalpy of solution of Standard Reference Material 1654, &alpha;-quartz (37 to 74 &mu;m), in 20.1 wt percent HF(aq) is -137 737&plusmn;209 J <span>mol</span><sup>-1</sup>&nbsp;at 333.15 K. This value is approximately 1255 J less negative than the value obtained by King in 1951 and 1952 for material that has a mean particle diameter of less than 5 &mu;m and that has been used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in their determinations of the enthalpies of formation of many silicates. Temperature and pressure were obtained for each node, and corresponding head values were calculated. The simulated temperature and pressure patterns correlated well with the observed patterns. A least-squares shaping and predictive error filter approach was used. The relations were ranked in part according to the root mean square (r.m.s.) error of fit across the entire sample space. The tilt data with an annual range of tilt of approximately 10 microradians were fitted to the combined weather data of temperature and rainfall with a 0.75-microradian r.m.s. error. The best fit of earthquakes to these same tilt data is the subclass of events with magnitude (M) &gt; 2.5 within 30 kilometers of the tilt site. The filter that mapped earthquakes to tilt yielded a 1.03-microradian r.m.s. error. The most unusual tilt anomaly over the entire 2-year period has the best fit of rainfall to the data for any single month of the entire data set. This unusual anomaly was the basis of an erroneously predicted earthquake (M ∼ 5). These data indicate that if there are premonitory earthquake signals, they are buried in local meteorlogical noise. Analysis of 0.45- to 2.5-µm field and laboratory spectra shows that iron-deficient opalized rocks in the Cuprite mining district, Nevada, have an intense OH-absorption band near 2.2 µm, owing to their content of clay minerals and alunite, and that this spectral feature is absent or weak in adjacent unaltered tuff and basalt. Altered rocks in the district can be discriminated from unaltered rocks with few ambiguities by use of color-ratio composite images derived from multispectral (0.46 to 2.36 µm) aircraft data. In addition, some effects of mineralogical zoning can be discriminated within the altered area. At most stations, detectable residues of all metals were present in more than 95 percent of the composite samples. Fishes with mercury residues exceeding 0.5 mg/kg wet weight in the whole fish were mainly predators. Fishes with residues of arsenic, lead, cadmium, and selenium exceeding 0.5 mg/kg included predatory and nonpredatory species. The number of composite samples in which residues of these elements exceeded 0.5 mg/kg decreased from 1971 to 1973, whereas the percentage of samples with detectable residues increased slightly. Only selected samples were analyzed in 1973; therefore, these figures should be used only cautiously as trend data. Species of fish collected varied considerably between geographic regions but were similar from year to year within each The values obtained for -log <i>K<sub>B</sub></i> are 10.89±0.16 (10°), 10.88±0.10 (25°), 10.90±0.10 (40°), 10.90±0.10 (55°), 10.99±0.14 (70°), and 11.10±0.14 (90°). Using National Bureau of Standards Technical Note 270 data for the ions, the free energy of formation (Δ<i>G</i>°<i><sub>t</sub></i>) at 25° for brucite is 831.486 joules per mole ( 198,730 cal mol<sup>-1</sup>). Using data compiled by R. A. Robie and D. R. Waldbaum in 1968 for the ions, this Δ<i>G</i>°<i><sub>t</sub></i> is -823,323 J mol<sup>-1</sup> (-198,930 cal mol<sup>-1</sup>).</p><p>Values of log KB are also calculated for the temperature range 0° to 200°C, by using thermochemical data listed by V. B. Parker, D. D. Wagman, and W. H. Evans in 1971 and E. G. King, M. J. Ferrante, and L. B. Pankratz in 1975 and the partial molal heat capacities estimated by C. M. Criss and J. W. Cobble in 1965. The experimental values are similar to the calculated values, especially at lower temperatures.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. S. Starting in 1975, the U.S. Geological Survey has been engaged in mapping and inventory of land use and land cover at a scale of 1:250000 with plans to change to new 1:100000 base maps as they become available. Such scales are-appropriate for acquiring benchmark or baseline data on land use and land cover on a nationwide basis with a reasonable degree of standardization and accuracy, within a practical time frame of 6 to 7 years, and at a reasonable level of detail in categorization. Changes in land use and land cover occur at highly variable rates from place to place. Thus variations, in the intervals between updates of land use and land cover data should be carefully evaluated in order to provide an appropriate frame of reference for the systematic updating of such data. A methodological framework is needed for monitoring changes in land use and land cover that will be timely, relatively inexpensive, and appropriate for widely varying needs at national, interstate-regional, state, multicounty, county, and city levels. In this article a partial framework for monitoring land use and land cover changes is provided with opportunity to extend its use to greater levels of detail in categorization and shorter intervals of frequency when needed for selected areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. The flood plain is underlain by thick, permeable alluvial deposits that comprise a water-table aquifer that is developed extensively for water supplies in the area. The aquifer consists principally of sand and gravel, interbedded with lenses of silt and clay. Its saturated thickness ranges from about 40 to 140 feet. The transmissivity and storage coefficients of the aquifer range from about 20,000 ft.<sup>2</sup>/day and 0.15. respectively, in the western part of the Island to about 39,500 ft.2/day and 0.24 in the eastern part. The amount of water stored in the aquifer, under normal conditions, is about 100 billion gallons.</p>\n<p>Discharge from the aquifer is principally by pumpage, which has increased from about 1 mgd (million gallons per day) in 1906 to about 37 mgd in 1970. About 2.5 mgd is normally lost to seepage and evapotranspiration along a 9-mile reach of Muscatine Slough in Muscatine County. About 0.9 mgd is discharged by evaporation from gravel pits.</p>\n<p>Recharge to the aquifer is by induced infiltration from the Mississippi River, seepage from the river during major flood events, precipitation, and seepage from the underlying limestone bedrock. Induced infiltration provides about 80 to 85 percent of the water withdrawn from the principal pumping centers along the river and also replaces about 70 to 80 percent of the water that is evaporated from the gravel pits; this amounted to about 30 mgd in 1971. Additional significant recharge from the river occurs during major floods, when prolonged high stages provide the head for considerable underflow to the aquifer. Recharge from precipitation on the Island was calculated to average about 6inches per year or about 0.3 mgd per square mile. Seepage from bedrock is significant and is attributed to the increased head differential between the alluvial and bedrock aquifers in the areas of major pumping.</p>\n<p>The chemical constituents of water from the aquifer are generally within the recommended limits established by the U. S. Public Health Service for drinking water.</p>\n<p>Stresses on the hydrologic system have affected the position and configuration of the water table and the chemical quality of the ground water. The large-scale withdrawals, which began at the principal pumping centers in 1946, have caused the water table to decline from about 1 foot in the interior of the Island to about 5 feet near the edges of the main pumping centers; the decline was more than 8 feet under the pumping centers. A slight increase in hardness of water from riverward wells in the pumping centers is attributed to the induced infiltration of slightly harder river water; a noticeable increase in hardness and iron content in water from landward wells is attributed to seepage of water from the bedrock. In the central irrigated area, which is underlain by very permeable, highly drained soils that are mulched with organic fertilizers, the nitrate content of the ground water is as high as 46 mg/l (milligrams per liter). Land-use practices have had, and probably will continue to have, an impact on the quality and quantity of water available in the system.</p>\n<p>The hydrologic system in 1971 was in dynamic equilibrium or in near-equilibrium with the stresses imposed on it to that date. This equilibrium would be disturbed by any additional stresses on the system and water levels would change until a new equilibrium was established. The effects of future stresses can be reasonably predicted by developing a digital model of the system. The data to develop such a model are available in this report. Continued and expanded monitoring of water levels would provide data for better model verification. Much of the information on lakes and reservoirs previously collected by Federal and State agencies has never been published. Those data were compiled and used as a basis for collecting additional information. This report provides information for use by city, county, and State planning groups as a basis for designing more advanced interpretative studies. The information also will be useful to sportsmen, tourists, and others interested in preserving the recreational value of Oregon's lakes.</p><p>Because of the large number of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon, a single report covering the State would be bulky. Therefore, the lake information is being issued in several volumes on a county or multicounty basis. Volume 1, released in 1973, covered Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook Counties; volume 2 (1974) included Benton, Lincoln, and Polk Counties; volume 3 (1975) included Hood River, Multnomah, Washing ton, and Yamhill Counties; and volume 4 (1976) included Clackamas County. Marion County was selected for volume 5. (See figure 1.)</p><p>The southeast part of Marion County lies in a national wilderness area. Wilderness areas are protected under the National Wilderness Preservation System that directs management \"for the use and enjoyment of the American people in such a manner as will leave them unimpaired for future use and&nbsp;enjoyment as wilderness.\" Regulations for wilderness&nbsp; use and entry permits may be obtained at U.S. Forest Service offices.&nbsp;</p><p>In addition to office compilation of existing data, each lake was visited. We have used seven different techniques and four different treatments of the fluorometric method to analyze for uranium in granitic rocks. In addition we have used four analytical techniques for thorium and three analytical techniques for potassium, two elements that are commonly present in anomalous amounts within uranium provinces. Our results show that commonly used techniques for thorium and potassium determinations are both adequately precise and accurate, but that many techniques used for uranium determinations lack the necessary precision or accuracy for complete geochemical prospecting. We suggest that a combination of delayed-neutron determinations for uranium and <span>γ</span>-ray spectrometric analyses for radium equivalent uranium, thorium, and potassium provides the best data base for geochemical exploration for uranium. If more detailed interpretations are desired, the combination of <span>γ</span>-ray spectrometry and <span>α</span>-spectrometry may be best. Carefully done fluorometric analyses should be adequate for water, ore, mineralized rock, and other applications where high precision and accuracy are not required.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.
