Contributing drainage area and the 2-year 24-hour rainfall are the only independent variables required for estimating flood depths for natural streams. For urban streams the percentage of the basin impervious and served by storm sewers is also required. The only limitations are that the stream be unregulated, that the main channels be unimproved, and that the contributing drainage area and the 2-year 24-hour rainfall be in the range of values used to derive the relations. The standard errors of estimate range from 24 percent for the 50- and 100-year floods to 33 percent for the 2-year flood for the natural streams. The estimation error for urban streams is not evaluated due to paucity of data. Although the flood depths estimated from techniques presented in this report are considered less reliable than those obtained from field surveys and hydraulic computations, the ease and simplicity of their determination are expected to make them useful for many purposes.</p><p>Data on flood depths for 132 gaging stations are given in table 1.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Berg from July 2 to July 20, 1975 in the part of the Craig (CR) 1:250,000-scale quadrangle northeast of Clarence Strait (figs. 1 and 2). It contains edited and revised observations on structure, lithology, mineralogy, metamorphism, and mineral occurrences. Areas covered by the observations include southern Etolin and adjacent islands and part of Cleveland Peninsula, including 5 sites in the Ketchikan (KC) quadrangle immediately adjacent to the Craig quadrangle (fig. 2). A preliminary geologic map incorporating the data has been released (Berg and others, 1976). The printout includes the latitude-longitude coordinates of each field station, so that the user can locate the observations within a few metres on larger-scale topographic maps than figure 2.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to provide an organized file of detailed field observations to supplement and amplify a companion geologic map. The combined reports thus constitute a complete record of available information to serve as wide a range of potential users as possible.</p><p>The information in this report was transferred from geologic fieldsheets (fig. 3) to computer storage using the method described by Hudson and others (1975). A. Marianne Fujii transcribed the data from the fieldsheets; Betsy Yount and Frances Wahl helped to update the computer file and prepare it for publication; and Bruce Salem wrote the interactive computer program that greatly facilitated entry of the fieldnotes into the computer file.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76490","usgsCitation":"Berg, H., and Fujii, A.M., 1976, Selected field data collected in 1975, northeastern Craig Quadrangle, southeastern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-490, viii, 70 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76490.","productDescription":"viii, 70 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424685,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0490/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":149216,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0490/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Craig Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -134.667,\n              55\n            ],\n            [\n              -132,\n              55\n            ],\n            [\n              -132,\n              56\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.667,\n              56\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.667,\n              55\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699f44","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berg, Henry C.","contributorId":73176,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berg","given":"Henry C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":178582,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fujii, A. For convenience, all fluctuations in the local tilt field of less than 24 hours duration will be designated SP (i.e., short period) tilt events. Three basic categories of waveshape appearance are defined, and the rules for naming the waveforms are outlined. Examples from tilt observations at four central California sites are provided. \r\n\r\nSection II contains some coseismic tilt data. Fourteen earthquakes in central California, ranging in magnitude from 2.9 to 5.2, were chosen for study on four tiltmeters within 10 source dimensions of the epicenters. The raw records from each of the four tiltmeters at the times of the earthquakes were photographed and are presented in this section. \r\n\r\nSection III contains documentation of computer programs used in the analysis of the short period tilt data. Program VECTOR computes the difference vector of a tilt event and displays the sequence of events as a head-to-tail vector plot. Program ONSTSP 1) requires two component digitized tilt data as input, 2) scales and plots the data, and 3) computes and displays the amplitude, azimuth, and normalized derivative of the tilt amplitude. Program SHARPS computes the onset sharpness, (i.e., the normalized derivative of the tilt amplitude at the onset of the tilt event) as a function of source-station distance from a model of creep-related tilt changes. Program DSPLAY plots the digitized data.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey, National Center for Earthquake Research,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76750","usgsCitation":"McHugh, S., 1976, Tilt changes of short duration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-750, 210 leaves in various pagings :ill. ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76750.","productDescription":"210 leaves in various pagings :ill. ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142613,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0750/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38134,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0750/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699dd5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McHugh, Stuart","contributorId":8852,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McHugh","given":"Stuart","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161125,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The primary data base consisted of 98 long-term gaging-station records collected within this 27,300-square-mile headwater area of the Ohio River basin. Supplemental information was derived from 83 short-term records. Mean annual runoff is at a regional minimum of less than 12 inches in an area extending from the northern West Virginia panhandle to the headwaters of the Mahoning River in Ohio. Mean annual runoff of more than 32 inches occurs in parts of the upper Cheat River basin in West Virginia. The zone of high runoff trends northeastward along the western slopes of the Allegheny Mountains; magnitudes diminish to about 25 inches at the eastern basin boundary near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. Runoff of this magnitude occurs also in a band across the upper Allegheny River basin in Pennsylvania. Ratios of mean annual discharge to the 30-year reference-period average were computed for each year of record for all long-term gaging stations. Annual discharges have ranged from about 30 percent to 200 percent of the 30-year mean. Graphed summaries of the annual ratios document the relative duration and magnitude of wet and dry periods during the past 65 years in the upper Ohio River basin. Copper is the dominant mineral commodity, both historically and in terms of potential future production. Gold and silver are the only other metals that have been produced. The metalliferous deposits are concentrated in a northwest-trending belt along the southern flank of the Wrangell Mountains, and, to a lesser extent, in a similar belt along the northeast flank of the range. Both belts have upper Paleozoic (Skolai Group) basements, abundant Mesozoic rocks, and some Tertiary intrusive rocks. They are marked by numerous faults, mainly northwest-striking. Mineral deposits are uncommon elsewhere in the quadrangle, especially in large tracks underlain by Wrangell Lava and in smaller areas underlain by the Kaskawulsh Group of Kindle (1953). Both the Wrangell Lava and the Kaskawulsh underlie rugged mountainous regions with extensive snow and ice cover, and could conceivably contain undetected concealed deposits.&nbsp;</p><p>The metallic, nonmetallic, and energy resources of the quadrangle are described sequentially. This report deals with geology, steady state and transient state of ground water, net depletion of ground water, surface-water flow, precipitation, chemistry of water, land and water use, and gravity data for the Anza-Terwilliger area. The data indicate that the rate of ground-water depletion ha's accelerated since 1950. Pumping depressions adjacent to the Cahuilla Indian Reservation have increased the hydraulic gradient and are.causing water beneath the reservation to flow toward these depressions. Total depletion of ground water since 1950 is about 14,000 acre-feet (17.3 cubic hectometres). Chemical analyses indicate that the ground water in local areas contains concentrations of nitrate above that recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for human consumption.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Menlo Park, CA","doi":"10.3133/wri7610","usgsCitation":"Moyle, W.R., 1976, Geohydrology of the Anza-Terwilliger area, Riverside County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-10, iv, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7610.","productDescription":"iv, 25 p.","numberOfPages":"32","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159583,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7610.PNG"},{"id":329144,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0010/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Riverside County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.83685302734375,\n              33.456651301881855\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.83685302734375,\n              33.601466321878846\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.51550292968749,\n              33.601466321878846\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.51550292968749,\n              33.456651301881855\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.83685302734375,\n              33.456651301881855\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a89fb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moyle, W. The data analysis given here is brief because of time limitations imposed at the meeting. A more detailed analysis of the data (both geological and geophysical) will be given in subsequent publications.</p><p>Our oral presentation was preceded by one given by Jeffrey Daniels and James Scott entitled \"Borehole Investigations of South Texas Uranium Deposits.\" Statements made in their presentation that are pertinent to this report are as follows: (1) a Tertiary sandstone is the host for the South Texas uranium occurrence, (2) the roll-front geometry is similar to those found in Wyoming, and (3) the roll-front does not occur at a visually obvious change from reduced to oxidized environments. A careful comparison of the IP (induced polarization) borehole logs and lithology revealed the following general points: (1) the largest IP response logged in the boreholes occurred at the uranium roll-front, and (2) the IP response can be correlated with percentage pyrite and with variations in the percentage and type of clay present.</p><p>The IP measurements reported here were made with a time-domain Huntec IP receiver. The transmitted wave-form had a two-second on-and-off period. Four windows were measured during the off-time. The second window, M2, which is given here, has a window duration of 130 milliseconds from 50 to 130 milliseconds. IP coupling is inferred not to be a serious problem in the survey data reported here, because the variations in M measurements are the same as those seen for the2 window of longest delay and length.</p><p>The data presented herein are part of a broad data set which the U.S. Geological Survey has gathered on surface geophysical methods. Other people who have been involved in the data collection, interpretation, and presentation are John Cady, David Campbell, Ralph Corken, Richard Meyer, Louis O'Connor, Tommas Nash, and James Scott.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7673","usgsCitation":"Smith, B., and Daniels, J., 1976, Induced-polarization surveys applied to exploration for roll-front uranium deposits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-73, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7673.","productDescription":"21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":499021,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0073/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145518,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0073/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f3e4b07f02db5ef5b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Bruce 0000-0002-1643-2997","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1643-2997","contributorId":43350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Bruce","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162720,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Daniels, J.J.","contributorId":75929,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"J.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162721,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The reservoir system is operated under the assumption of a 3-day prior knowledge of inflows. This information is attainable from the ooperational reservoir-inflow forecasting model developed in the Part I report. The model, developed for this part of the study, incorporates an inflow component, a diversion-canal component, and a reservoir system component and is capable of evaluating the performance of the reservoir systemem for a variety of operating rule conditions. All model components were verified using observed reservoir input and output data for a 6-year (1967-72 water years) period. In addition, a long-term 31-year simulation under present rule of operation was performed and the results summarized statistically. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. NAWDEX is not a depository of water data; its objectives are to provide the user with sufficient information to define what data are available, where these data may be obtained, and in what form they are available; also to describe some of their major characteristics. NAWDEX is comprised of water-oriented organizations in the Federal, State, and local governments, and in the academic and private sectors of the water-data community who work together to make their water data readily and conveniently available. Data search and referral services are currently provided through the Program Office established by the U.S. Geological Survey which has the lead-role responsibility for NAWDEX operations. During its first year of operation, a computerized Water Data Sources Directory was developed which identifies more than 300 organizations that collect water data, the types of data they collect, and the locations within these organizations from which the data may be obtained. NAWDEX is expanding its services and is establishing a nationwide network of Local Assistance Centers for local users ' access to these services. The beds above and below the injection zone were subjected to attack by the acid waste. By 1969, effects of the waste were detected in the water of the well monitoring the upper part of the Floridan aquifer at 1,400 feet. The disposal well was deepened late in 1971 to 2,242 feet in an attempt to stop the upward migration of waste. The results of research investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey during 1966-73 indicated that the waste continued to move upward and laterally. This investigated, continued by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1973-1975, shows that the remedial actions of repairing the disposal well liner and injecting periodically into the deep monitor well at 2,060 feet failed to contain the wastes within the lower part of the Floridan aquifer. The data collected by the Survey are supported by the owner 's chemical-oxygen-demand and pH determinations. A hydraulic connection between the injection zone and the overlying monitoring zone is implied. Plans call for injecting into deepter strata. Periodic water temperature observations, which were made at a frequency of approximately once per month during the past 15 years, were analyzed with the aid of a computer program to describe the annual water temperature cycle at sites in the Commonwealth. Shown on a map of Kentucky, at each site of water-temperature collections, are maximum median monthly temperature, minimum median monthly temperature, and annual average temperature. Stream temperatures in Kentucky vary between 0 and 30 degrees Celsius (deg C) during the year. A network of observation wells has been established near the sites, and data have been collected from the wells and from nearby streams. Ground-water mounds have built up under the lagoons as percolation of effluents occurred. Percolating effluents mix with ground water and form plumes of ground water that contain chemical constituents for the effluents. Each plume tends to move down the hydraulic gradient in a direction generally perpendicular to the water-level contours. Water-level contours and most likely areas of movement of the plumes are shown on maps. Tests using rhodamine WT dye and dissolved solids as tracers suggested that chemical constituents in the plumes travel at different velocities as a result of dispersion and adsorlption. Chemical constituents from effluent percolating from the Old Faithful lagoons probably discharge into nearby Iron Spring Creek. Constituents from lagoons at the other three sites studied probably have not reached nearby streams or lakes. Temperatures of these fluids ranged from about 250 deg to 700 deg C for various stages and deposits. Most systems boiled. High salinities, shown by halite-bearing inclusions, and boiling, suggested by coexisting gas and liquid-rich inclusions, are considered to be diagnostic of epizonal intrusions which are the most favorable parents for porphyry copper mineralization. Depth of emplacement of many copper-bearing stocks is deduced from fluid inclusions to have been about 6,000 to 10,000 feet (1,800 to 3,000 metres); fluid pressures during mineralization are interpreted generally to be less than 500 bars.\r\n\r\nModerate-salinity (less than about 12 percent) and moderate-temperature <350 deg C) fluids are noted in all porphyry copper deposits and were responsible for the deposition of most copper and molybdenum in deposits, such as Bagdad, Esperanza, Mineral Park, Morenci, Ray, Sierrita, in the Southwestern United States and several in southern British Columbia. However, with only three exceptions, highly saline fluids apparently were present at an early stage and also deposited metals. The relative amounts and economic importance of copper and molybdenum deposited from high- and moderate-salinity fluids varies within the porphyry deposit class.\r\n\r\nThere is compelling geologic and geochemical evidence that chloride is important for transport of metals, but the porphyry coppers stand out as a class associated with fluids of especially high salinity during at least one stage of their formation. Halite cubes in fluid inclusions are an effective, although rough, indicator of those salinities and can be conveniently monitored during petrographic study of thin sections. Thus, fluid inclusions can be used to characterize favorable intrusions, metal anomalies, and caprocks as an additional method of detecting possible disseminated porphyry copper metallization. The presence of halite-bearing inclusions, especially coexisting with gas-rich inclusions, is considered to be a favorable fluid anomaly in the search for porphyry ore.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp907D","usgsCitation":"Nash, J.T., 1976, Fluid-Inclusion Petrology - Data from Porphyry Copper Deposits and Applications to Exploration: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 907, vi, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp907D.","productDescription":"vi, 16 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":117830,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0907d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":33424,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0907d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -120,30 ], [ -120,42 ], [ -106,42 ], [ -106,30 ], [ -120,30 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de7c7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nash, J. Preimpoundment water-quality data were collected on the Raystown Branch and six tributary st.reams in the basin. Specific conductance values varied inversely with water discharge. The pH values were extremely low only at the Shoup Run site. Dissolved oxygen concentrations observed at all sites indicated a relatively high oxygen saturation level throughout the year. Seasonal variations in nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P levels were measured at the main inflow station at Saxton, Pa. The highest concentrations of nitrate-N and orthophosphate-P occurred in the winter and spring months and the lowest concentrations were measured dur:l.ng the swnmer and fall. Bacteriological data indicated no excessive -amounts of fecal matter present at the inflows. Soil samples collected at four sites in the impoundment area were predominantly of the Barbour, Philo, and Basher series, which are considered to be highly fertile soils with silt-loam and sandy~loam textures. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls, Reservoir. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Parker quadrangle.
