Annual flood peaks for the period of record for each gaged site are included.</p>\n<p>Equations of the relations between flood-frequency and drainage-basin characteristics were developed by multiple-regression analyses. Flood-frequency characteristics for ungaged sites on unregulated, rural streams can be estimated by use of these equations. The State was divided into five areas of similar physiographic characteristics.</p>\n<p>The most significant basin characteristics are drainage areas, main-channel slope, soil permeability, storage, rainfall intensity, and forest cover. The standard error of prediction for the equation for the 100-year flood discharge ranges from 25 to 33 percent in the State.</p>\n<p>A comparison of multiple-regression analyses by use of generalized least squares and ordinary least squares was made to determine the best method for analysis. A split-sampling technique was used for all the stations in the State. Differences in results of the two methods were minimal. The generalized least-squares method was chosen for use because its theoretical basis is superior to that of ordinary least squares and its estimates of accuracy of the equations for estimating flood-frequency characteristics at ungaged sites is better than that of ordinary least squares.</p>\n<p>A method for estimating flood-frequency characteristics of regulated streams was developed from the relation of discharge and drainage area. Graphs for the major regulated streams are presented in the report.</p>\n<p>Drainage-basin characteristics derived from satellite imagery and channel morphology data were tried in the regression Based on these assumptions, the model calculates coefficients, called conductance, that are multiplied by head difference to determine flow between cells. Although these are common assumptions in finite-difference models, other assumptions are possible. A new option to the model program reads conductance as input data rather than calculating it. This optional lows the user to calculate conductance outside of the model. The user thus has the flexibility to define conductance using any desired assumptions. \r\n\r\nFor a water-table condition, horizontal conductance must change as water level varies. To handle this situation, the new option reads conductance divided by thickness (CDT) as input data. The model calculates saturated thickness and multiplies it by CDT to obtain conductance. Thus, the user is still free from the assumptions of centered nodes and constant transmissivity in cells. \r\n\r\nThe model option is written in FORTRAN77 and is fully compatible with the existing model. At Alamo, the aquifer is locally unconfined. Four wells screened in the Memphis aquifer provided Alamo with 0.3 million gallons of water per day. Trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene, trichloroethane, and tetrachloroethylene were detected in water samples from two of the wells. In September 1989, the TCE concentration in a sample from well 1 was 45 micrograms per liter (mg/L); Tennessee?s maximum contaminant level for TCE in drinking water is 5 mg/L Concentrations of TCE in water from this well ranged from 40 to 113 mg/L during I988 and 1989. TCE concentration in water collected from well 2 in September 1989 was 0.7 mg/L During I988 and 1989, TCE concentrations in this well ranged from less than 0.5 to 5.1 mg/L None of the semivolatile organic compounds on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s priority-pollutant list were detected in water from well 1.\rSoil gas was sampled at a depth of 3.5 feet below land surface in areas of suspected ground-water contamination. Analyses by gas chromatography indicated the presence of TCE in soils about 230 feet east of well 1 in the area of a former industrial site where solvents were handled. TCE concentrations in the soil gas of this area ranged from 0.2 to 30 mg/L TCE was not detected in soil gas near any of the wells.\rDepth to water at the wells ranged from 39 to 49 feet. Increased pumpage could cause further salinization </span><span>of the ground-water resources. </span></p><p><span>The Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers can be considered potential water-supply sources for the Savannah, Ga., area, on the basis of historic stream flow records and water-quality constituents and properties examined. Analyses of stream-discharge data indicate that the minimum average discharges for 7 consecutive days for a 10-year recurrence interval (7010), was 5,460 cubic feet per second (ft3/s) at Savannah River near Clyo, Ga., and 192 ft3/s at Ogeechee River near Eden, Ga. For example, 90 percent of the time, flows in excess of the 7010 discharges are about 900 and 200 ft3/s, respectively. However, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, imposes a non-depletable flow criterion; thus, the actual quantity of water available for withdrawal probably would be less than flows in excess of minimum flow criteria, such as the 7Q10.</span></p><div class=\"page\" data-page-number=\"11\" data-loaded=\"true\"><div class=\"textLayer\"><span>A ground-water flow model was developed and used in conjunction with other previously calibrated </span><span>models in the coastal area to simulate the effects of additional pumping on water levels near sites of seawater </span><span>encroachment at Hilton Head Island and saltwater intrusion at Brunswick. Based on model simulations and the </span><span>constraint of preventing water-level declines at locations of encroachment and intrusion, the potential of the </span><span>Upper Floridan aquifer to supply additional water in the Savannah area is limited under present (1985) </span><span>hydrologic conditions. The water-supply potential ranges from less than 1 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) in </span><span>Liberty, McIntosh, most of Bryan, and southern Chatham Counties, Ga., and in southern Beaufort County, S.C., </span><span>to more than 5 Mgal/d in northern Jasper and northern Beaufort Counties, S.C. Because of the limited water-</span><span>supply potential, hypothetical alternatives involving redistributions, redistributions and small increases, and </span><span>decreases in pumpage were simulated to determine the effects on water levels. These simulations indicate that </span><span>reductions and redistributions of pumping would not adversely affect water levels at locations of encroachment </span><span>and intrusion. Water samples from each of these lakes and Bear Lake, which is not adjacent to tribal land, were analyzed for water-quality indicators. Lakelevel fluctuations also were measured for each lake except Big Round Lake. Grain-size and chemical analyses were done on lake-sediment samples from Bashaw, Rice, Clam, Gaslyn, and Bear Lakes.
