Forty-nine ground-water samples from wells and springs were collected and analyzed during the study. Eight surface-water samples were analyzed. All the water samples were analyzed for major cations and anions, selenium, and arsenic. Seven of the surface-water samples also were analyzed for trace elements. The potability of ground and surface waters in the Eagle River valley can be determined by comparing the chemical data in tables with the recommended drinking-water-quality standards of the U.S. Public Health Service (1962) presented at the top of the tables. Most of the analyses indicate that only a few chemical constituents (dissolved solids, iron, manganese, and sulfate) occur in excess of these standards. The occurrence of selenium in excess of the recommended limits was detected in two samples. The techniques can be used at ungaged sites as well as sites where insufficient data are available to make a reliable estimate. Streams have been divided intp two types--major and minor. Major streams are the Susquehanna, West Branch Susquehanna, Juniata, and Chemung Rivers. Points on these streams with drainage areas of more than 2,000 mi 2 (5,180 km 2 ) are included in this category. Points on these streams with drainage areas of less than 2,000 mi 2 fall into the minor stream category. Generally minor streams are herein defined as those draining less than 2,000 mi 2 (5,180 km 2 ). Multiple -regression techniques have been used to develop relations for estimating the 1-, 3-, 7-, 30-, and 183-day duration low flows at recurrence intervals of 10, 20, SO and 100 years for annual series data and the 1 - , 3-, 7-, and 30-day duration low flows, at the same recurrence intervals, for six individual months, May through October, inclusive.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7651","usgsCitation":"Armbruster, J.T., 1976, Technical manual for estimating low-flow frequency characteristics of streams in the Susquehanna River basin: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-51, 71 p. :ill., map (fold. in pocket) ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7651.","productDescription":"71 p. :ill., map (fold. in pocket) ;26 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":157928,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":267199,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0051/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa31f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Armbruster, Jeffrey T.","contributorId":37707,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Armbruster","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195559,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Included in the analysis were data on the major inorganic chemical constituents, temperature, nitrogen and phosphorus species, trace metals, pesticides, organic carbon and biochemical oxygen demand. Based on the results of the analysis, a network was designed which would provide data to meet six specific objectives: (1) water quality accounting, (2) areal assessments (3) detection of gross long-term trends, (4) detection of toxic and deleterious substances, (5) establish a limnological data base on lakes and (6) furnish data on chemical inputs from the atmosphere.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7652","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District","usgsCitation":"Goolsby, D.A., Mattraw, H.C., Lamonds, A.G., Maddy, D., and Rollo, J., 1976, Analysis of historical water-quality data and a network plan for the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-52, vi, 124 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7652.","productDescription":"vi, 124 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158170,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0052/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359801,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0052/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -82,\n 25\n ],\n [\n -80,\n 25\n ],\n [\n -80,\n 28.5\n ],\n [\n -82,\n 28.5\n ],\n [\n -82,\n 25\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db680374","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goolsby, D. The maps are necessarily generalized in places owing to the lack of sufficient data. In general the geohydrologic information pertains to large areas, and local exceptions occur. Users needing more detailed information for specific areas may address inquiries to the district chief of the U.S. Geological Survey at the addresses given in the section “Selected References.” The maps were prepared using data from previously published reports, data collected by other Federal State, and local agencies, and data from the files of the U.S. Geological Survey offices in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The peak discharges for recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 years were determined for each station and are given in tabular form where appropriate.

Features that define the reference width vary with location and stream type. A discussion is given of the features that were used in measuring reference widths.

The relation between the magnitude of floods of various frequencies and the reference width and main-channel slope was reliable with a standard error of about 65 percent for most of the areas of the State; however, no reliable relation could be found for many stream channels in a large area of southeastern New Mexico, and it is recommended that the relation not be used in that area. The reasons for this difficulty is believed to be due to recent channel entrenchment in the area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The solutions percolate toward the Snake River Plain aquifer (135 m below) through interlayered basalts and unconsolidated sediments and an extensive zone of ground water perched on a sedimentary layer about 40 m beneath the ponds. A three-segment numerical model was developed to simulate the system, including effects of convection, hydrodynamic dispersion, radioactive decay, and adsorption. Simulated hydraulics and solute migration patterns for all segments agree adequately with the available field data. The model can be used to project subsurface distributions of waste solutes under a variety of assumed conditions for the future. Although chloride and tritium reached the aquifer several years ago, the model analysis suggests that the more easily sorbed solutes, such as cesium-137 and strontium-90, would not reach the aquifer in detectable concentrations within 150 years for the conditions assumed. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. Copper is the dominant mineral commodity, both historically and in terms of potential future production. Gold and silver are the only other metals that have been produced. The metalliferous deposits are concentrated in a northwest-trending belt along the southern flank of the Wrangell Mountains, and, to a lesser extent, in a similar belt along the northeast flank of the range. Both belts have upper Paleozoic (Skolai Group) basements, abundant Mesozoic rocks, and some Tertiary intrusive rocks. They are marked by numerous faults, mainly northwest-striking. Mineral deposits are uncommon elsewhere in the quadrangle, especially in large tracks underlain by Wrangell Lava and in smaller areas underlain by the Kaskawulsh Group of Kindle (1953). Both the Wrangell Lava and the Kaskawulsh underlie rugged mountainous regions with extensive snow and ice cover, and could conceivably contain undetected concealed deposits.

The metallic, nonmetallic, and energy resources of the quadrangle are described sequentially. SUPERMOCK simulates the ground-water system and DATE and HYDROG aid in the display of computed data. During calibration, DATE is especially useful because it has the optional feature of comparing computed data with observed data. Although the programs can be run independently, experience dictates that for best results the three should be run as steps in the same job. This report deals with geology, steady state and transient state of ground water, net depletion of ground water, surface-water flow, precipitation, chemistry of water, land and water use, and gravity data for the Anza-Terwilliger area. The data indicate that the rate of ground-water depletion ha's accelerated since 1950. Pumping depressions adjacent to the Cahuilla Indian Reservation have increased the hydraulic gradient and are.causing water beneath the reservation to flow toward these depressions. Total depletion of ground water since 1950 is about 14,000 acre-feet (17.3 cubic hectometres). NAWDEX is not a depository of water data; its objectives are to provide the user with sufficient information to define what data are available, where these data may be obtained, and in what form they are available; also to describe some of their major characteristics. NAWDEX is comprised of water-oriented organizations in the Federal, State, and local governments, and in the academic and private sectors of the water-data community who work together to make their water data readily and conveniently available. Data search and referral services are currently provided through the Program Office established by the U.S. Geological Survey which has the lead-role responsibility for NAWDEX operations. During its first year of operation, a computerized Water Data Sources Directory was developed which identifies more than 300 organizations that collect water data, the types of data they collect, and the locations within these organizations from which the data may be obtained.
