The principal deposit is the Wyodak-Anderson coal bed. The bed is 50-100 feet (15-30 meters) thick over large areas, lies less than 200 feet (60 meters) deep in a north-south trending strip nearly 100 miles (161 kilometers) long and 2-3 miles (3-5 kilometers) wide, and contains an estimated 15 billion tons (13.6 billion metric tons) of sub-bituminous, low-sulfur coal that is presently considered to be accessible to surface mining. Extensive mining of this deposit has the potential for causing a variety of environmental impacts and has been a matter of much public concern and debate in recent years. \r\n\r\nAn integrated program of geologic, hydrologic, geochemical, and related studies by the U.S. Geological Survey in central Campbell County provides basic information about the land and its resources, including (1) characteristics of the landscape, (2) properties of rocks and surface materials, (3) depth and thickness of coal, (4) streamflow, (5) depth to ground water, (6) quality of ground water, (7) sediment yield, (8) concentrations of trace elements in soils, rocks, coal, vegetation, and water, and (9) current land use. The data are used to analyze and predict some of the potential environmental effects of surface mining, such as the extent of land disturbance, nature and degree of landscape modification, and disruption of surface-water and ground-water systems. Advance knowledge and understanding of these and other problems are useful in the planning and regulation of future leasing, mining, reclamation, and related activities.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of Interior, Geological Survey : distributed by Branch of Distribution, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir743","usgsCitation":"Keefer, W.R., and Hadley, R.F., 1976, Land and natural resource information and some potential environmental effects of surface mining of coal in the Gillette area, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 743, vi, 27 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm. , https://doi.org/10.3133/cir743.","productDescription":"vi, 27 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm. One of the needs in choosing from among several disposal alternatives is a means of evaluating the influence such an injection will have on the aquifer system. This report describes a mathematical model to accomplish this purpose.

The objective of the contract was to develop a three-dimensional transient mathematical model which would accurately simulate behavior of waste injection into deep saline aquifers. Fluid properties, density and viscosity are functions of pressure, temperature and composition to provide a comprehensive assessment tool. The model is a finite-difference numerical solution of the partial differential equations describing

single phase flow in the aquifer,

energy transport by convection and conduction, and

compositional changes in the aquifer fluid.

The model is not restricted to examining waste disposal operations. It can be used effectively to evaluate fresh water storage in saline aquifers, hot water storage in underground aquifers, salt water intrusion into groundwater flow systems and other similar applications.

The primary advantages of the present model can be summarized as:

The model is user-oriented for easy application to full-scale evaluation needs.

The model is fully three-dimensional and transient.

The model is comprehensive accounting for density and viscosity variations in the aquifer due to temperature or compositional changes.

The model includes the effects of hydrodynamic dispersion in both the temperature and compositional mixing between resident and injected fluids.

The model energy balance includes the effects of pressure. This can be important in deep aquifer systems where the viscous pressure gradient is significant.

The model uses second-order correct space and time approximations to the convective terms. This minimizes the numerical dispersion problem.

The model is extremely flexible in providing a wide choice of boundary conditions. These include natural flow in the aquifer, aquifer influence functions around the perimeter of the grid in recognition that the gridded region does not have no-flow boundaries, heat losses into the overlying or underlying impermeable strata, and the wellbore heat and pressure drop calculations coupled to the aquifer flow equations.

The limitations of the present techniques are:

The use of the second-order correct finite-difference approximations introduces block size and time step restrictions. These restrictions, though considerably less stringent than explicit methods cause, depend upon the magnitude of the dispersivity.

The comprehensive nature of the model makes the computer time and storage requirements significant.

The model, because of its complexity, is not as efficient in reducing down to solve simpler problems as a specially written model would be.

Included in the report are detailed descriptions of the approach used in the model, validation tests of the model, and a typical application of the model. A comparison volume documents the input data requirements, program structure, and an example problem for the model. It also includes a summary of the major inorganic chemical data collected near Dos Rios, at South Fork, and at Scotia since the early 1950's. The recent reconnaissance involved data collection for nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, trace elements, and pesticide compounds in the river at Van Arsdale Dam, near Dos Rios, at Fort Seward, and at Scotia.

The number of samples collected during the special reconnaissance is somewhat limited, and therefore the data are only an estimate of conditions that presently exist at selected sites in the river. Results indicate that most of the constituents were low in concentration; although some variability was measured for some constituents. Sampling was designed so that samples collected at each site would represent a large range in discharge. Results indicate that discharge was not the singular factor controlling the concentration variance for most constituents. However, the concentrations of total ammonia, phosphorus, arsenic, chromium, copper, and zinc indicated a direct relation with discharge at some sites.

Statistical analysis indicates that the past sampling program has been adequate to estimate the major chemical constituents of the river. The average concentration of suspended sediment for Wisconsin streams is low in comparison with that of many streams in the United States—110 milligrams per litre for Wisconsin, as compared with 600 milligrams per litre for 50 percent of the United States (Rainwater, 1962). Enough data have been collected at 84 of the 118 sites to calculate an average annual suspended-sediment yield at those sites.
\n
Measured average annual yields range from about 680 tons per square mile (238 tonnes per square kilometre) in the \"Driftless Area\" to 3.1 tons per square mile (1.1 tonnes per square kilometre) in the Northern Highland province. The average suspended-sediment yield for Wisconsin is about 80 tons per square mile per year (28 tonnes per square kilometre per year). Only three areas in the State may be considered to have a sediment problem. They are sections of the \"Driftless Area\" of southwestern Wisconsin, the Lake Superior red-clay area, and areas of expanding urbanization in southeastern Wisconsin.
\n
Sediment-yield prediction equations have been developed for the Northern Highland province, the Central Plain province, the Eastern Ridges and Lowlands province, and the \"Driftless Area\" (Martin, 1932 and Thwaites, 1956). These four equations make it possible to predict average annual suspendedsediment yields at any point on about 95 percent of the streams in the State. The prediction technique involves regression equations that relate average annual suspended-sediment yields to factors, such as topography, soils, land use and cover, stream hydraulics, and climatic conditions. The standard error of estimate for these equations, which only represents the accuracy of an estimated sediment yield at an ungaged site, ranges from 28 to 38 percent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7554","collaboration":"Prepared n cooperation wit the City of Madison, City of Middleton, Douglas County, The reach, 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) in length, wan immediately upstream from a previously established bedload sampling station. Nineteen channel cross sections were sounded at regular intervals during the spring-runoff period. Four stage recorders provided continuous records of water-surface elevations. Samples of bed material at most of the cross sections were obtained prior to high water. Streamflow and sediment-discharge measurements were collected at four of the sections.

The physiography and hydrology of the contributing watershed, the study reach, and the equipment and techniques used in data collection are described briefly. The bulk of the report is a presentation of data for the several-week period of late May to early June 1975, for which concurrent water discharge data, bedload transport and size data, and cross-section depth measurements were collected. In addition, some data collected in 1973 and 1974 and before and after the calibration period in 1975 are included for completeness.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO","doi":"10.3133/ofr7622","usgsCitation":"Mahoney, H.A., Andrews, E.D., Emmett, W.W., Leopold, L.B., Meade, R.H., Myrick, R.M., and Nordin, C.F., 1976, Data for calibrating unsteady-flow sediment-transport models, East Fork River, Wyoming, 1975: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-22, ix, 293 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7622.","productDescription":"ix, 293 p.","numberOfPages":"309","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140802,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0022/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36646,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"East Fork River","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f9bb6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mahoney, Holly A.","contributorId":39781,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mahoney","given":"Holly","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158753,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andrews, Edmund D. eandrews@usgs.gov","contributorId":3828,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"Edmund","email":"eandrews@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":158749,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Emmett, William W.","contributorId":68715,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Emmett","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158755,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158752,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Meade, Robert H. 0000-0002-4965-3040 rhmeade@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4965-3040","contributorId":2744,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meade","given":"Robert","email":"rhmeade@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":158754,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Myrick, Robert M.","contributorId":24345,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Myrick","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158751,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Nordin, Carl F.","contributorId":68297,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nordin","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158750,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

The springs, which occur along the Gunnison River and a principal tributary between Delta and Paonia, are regarded as evidence of a still-functioning hydrothermal system. Associated with the springs are hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide gas seeps, carbon dioxide gas-powered geysers, thick travertine deposits including radioactive travertine, and a flowing warm-water (41?C) radioactive well. Geochemical study of the springs is based on surface observations, on-site water-property measurements, and sampling of water, travertine, soft precipitates, and mud. The spring deposits are mostly carbonates, sulfates, sulfides, and chlorides that locally contain notable amounts of some elements, such as arsenic, barium, lithium, and radium. Samples from five localities have somewhat different trace element assemblages even though they are related to the same hydrothermal system. All the spring waters but one are dominated by sodium chloride or sodium bicarbonate. The exception is an acid sulfate water with a pH of 2.9, which contains high concentrations of aluminum and iron. \r\n\r\nMost of the detectable radioactivity is due to the presence of radium-226, a uranium daughter product, but at least one spring precipitate contains abundant radium-228, a thorium daughter product. The 5:1 ratio of radium-228 to radium-226 suggests the proximity of a vein-type deposit as a source for the radium. The proposed locus of a thorium-uranium mineral deposit is believed to lie in the vicinity of Paonia, Colo. Exact direction and depth are not determinable from data now available.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76223","usgsCitation":"Cadigan, R., Rosholt, J.N., and Felmlee, J., 1976, Radioactive mineral springs in Delta County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-223, iii, 39 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76223.","productDescription":"iii, 39 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151977,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0223/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":47721,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0223/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a09d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cadigan, Robert A.","contributorId":93514,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cadigan","given":"Robert A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179010,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rosholt, John N.","contributorId":68336,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rosholt","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179008,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Felmlee, J. The Clay Evans No. 1 test penetrated sand, gravel, and clay to 555 feet (169m), sand and thin volcanic flows to about 1,250 feet (381 m), and volcanic flows and tuffs to 2,006 feet (611 m). Logs and water samples indicated fresh ground \\vater to about 1, 250 feet (381 m); below that, permeability is probably low. The Culberson County Airport test was drilled through sand, gravel, and clay to 1,145 feet (349m), conglomerate to 1,205 feet (367m), and the Lower Cretaceous Cox Sandstone to 1,306 feet (398m). Logs and water s~mples indicated fresh water in the alluvial fill and in the Cox Sandstone to about 1,265 feet (386m); below that depth, permeability is probably low. The Davis test was drilled through clay with some thin beds of sand and gravel containing fresh water to a depth of 2,012 feet (613 m).
\n
Borehole temperature data indicated above-nonnal gradients in the Guerra and Culberson County Airport tests. Temperature gradients in the Evans and Davis tests were near normal.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76338","usgsCitation":"Gates, J.S., and White, D.E., 1976, Test drilling for ground water in Hudspeth, Culberson, and Presidio Counties in westernmost Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-338, 76 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76338.","productDescription":"76 p.","numberOfPages":"77","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":112974,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0338/report.pdf","size":"2928","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147541,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0338/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad9e4b07f02db684c34","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gates, Joseph Spencer","contributorId":108089,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gates","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"Spencer","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168308,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, Donald Edward","contributorId":84731,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168307,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The program operates on a file of mineral powder diffraction data (VanTrump and Hauff, 1976b) which contains two-theta or 'd' values, and intensities, chemical formula, mineral name, identification number, and mineral group code. XRDPLT is a machine-independent Fortran program which operates in time-sharing mode on a DEC System i0 computer and the Gerber plotter (Evenden, 1974). The program prompts the user to respond from a time-sharing terminal in a conversational format with the required input information. \r\n\r\nThe program offers two major options: retrieval only; retrieval and plot. The first option retrieves mineral names, formulas, and groups from the file by identification number, by the mineral group code (a classification by chemistry or structure), or by searches based on the formula components. For example, it enables the user to search for minerals by major groups (i.e., feldspars, micas, amphiboles, oxides, phosphates, carbonates) by elemental composition (i.e., Fe, Cu, AI, Zn), or by a combination of these (i.e., all copper-bearing arsenates). \r\n\r\nThe second option retrieves as the first, but also plots the retrieved 2-theta and intensity values as diagrammatic X-ray powder patterns on mylar sheets or overlays. These plots can be made using scale combinations compatible with chart recorder diffractograms and 114.59 mm powder camera films. The overlays are then used to separate or sieve out unrelated minerals until unknowns are matched and identified.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76407","usgsCitation":"Hauff, P.L., and Van Trump, G., 1976, Laboratory manual: mineral X-ray diffraction data retrieval/plot computer program: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-407, 55 p. :ill. ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76407.","productDescription":"55 p. :ill. ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151300,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0407/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48735,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0407/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b1018","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hauff, Phoebe L.","contributorId":10402,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hauff","given":"Phoebe","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180596,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Van Trump, George","contributorId":19156,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Trump","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180597,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Some of the data are compiled and reported in readily available, widely known publications; some are not. Continuing requests for information on the locations of data collection sites and on the sources of data have suggested the need for a guide to that information. \r\n\r\nPresently active primary-data-collection sites have been located on a map of the Greater Pittsburgh region (Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania), and the sources of data--by publication or responsible agency-have been described. The data were collected during 1973-76 from 338 ground-water and surface-water samples. All samples were analyzed for major catons and anions, and selenium and arsenic. Data in the tables are keyed by numbers to maps showing the locations of sampling sites. Many of the samples contained arsenic, chloride, dissolved solids, fluoride, iron, magnesium, manganese, nitrate, nitrite-plus-nitrate as nitrogen, selenium, and sulfate in concentrations exceeding recommended or mandatory standards for drinking water established by the Colorado Department of Health and U.S. Public Health Service. This study incorporates the results of analyses for arsenic from 827 rock samples collected in the quadrangle, and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1961 and 1976 using semiquantitative emission spectrophotometry. The samples included both unaltered and hydrothermally altered rocks. The hydrothermally altered rock consist of ore grade material, gossans, fault gouge, vein materials, silica-rich boxworks, veins adjacent to faults, and fracture surfaces showing evidence of mineralization. Therefore, the analytical data set may be considered representative of most rock types known to occur in the study area.

The accompanying map shows the distribution and relative abundance of arsenic in rocks collected. Geochemical analyses have been grouped and are represented by symbols on a base map, which includes topography and generalized geology. The range of analytical values and the symbol that represents it are shown on the histogram. Graphical representation of analytical values on the map permits easy observation of any large variation resulting from separate or duplicate samples collected at the same or nearby localites. The study is also designed to determine the effectiveness of different erosion-control measures in reducing sediment discharges. The study area, near Enola, Pa., consists of five adjacent drainage basins, four of which will be crossed by Interstate 81. Ninety percent of the land in each of the basins is in forest or grass. Active farmland accounts for less than 10 percent, and the remainder is in roadways and buildings. The major factor affecting sediment concentrations and discharges was the construction of a one-lane roadway and a 5-acre (2 hm2) farm pond in basin 2.
