No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Idaho Falls North quadrangle. Geochemical exploration for this type of disseminated deposit depends upon recognizing the significance of this volatile suite and interpreting it in light of other geologic and geophysical data. One way of estimating the significance of the volatile suite is to determine enrichment factors. The enrichment factor is defined as abundance divided by crustal abundance or abundance divided by the local Clarke. Enrichment factors for the volatile suite in specific areas of the Edna Mountain quadrangle, Humboldt County, Nevada, interpreted with other geologic and geophysical factors, indicate that a potential for disseminated gold mineralization exists. Although most known disseminated gold deposits are exposed at the surface, the potential for finding additional buried or concealed deposits in north-central Nevada is high. Water-bearing properties of the geologic units are summarized. The hydrogeologic map illustrates the distribution of wells in the different units and gives basic data on the yields of wells, depth of wells, depth to water, and dissolved solids and conductance of the water. Aquifers capable of yielding more than 1,000 gpm (gallons per minute) underlie the area everywhere, except in the mountains on the periphery of the basin. In 1970, approximately 29,500 of the 40,475 people living in the Bighorn Basin were served by municipal water supplies. The municipal supply for about 6,300 of these people was from ground water. The natural flows of streams in the Bighorn Basin differ greatly due to a wide range in the meteorologic, topographic, and geologic conditions of the basin. The station locations and the average discharge per square mile are shown on the map and give an indication of the geographic variation of basin yields. The maximum instantaneous discharge that has occurred at each station during its period of record is shown. Instructions, equations, and graphs are presented to aid the design engineer in estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods.</p>\n<p>For natural-flow streams, the estimating equations and graphical solutions are based on regional relations between floods of a specific return period and selected basin characteristics. Nebraska was subdivided into five hydrologic regions by means of regressions and residuals from the regressions. The boundaries of Regions 1 and 2 were determined to a great extent by differences in soil type. The divisions between Region 2 and Region 4 were also determined by differences in soil type. Boundaries of Region 3 and Region 5 are along or near basin divides.</p>\n<p>Flood magnitude and frequency solution diagrams are presented for major controlled streams such as the North Platte, South Platte, Platte, and Republican Rivers. Flood information on small controlled streams is limited to available station data.</p>\n<p>Flood characteristics are tabulated for 303 gaging stations having 13 or more years of record. These flood characteristics provide the best information on floods at these gaged sites.</p>\n<p>Observed maximum flood peaks at 303 gaging stations with 13 or more years of record and significant peaks at 57 short-term stations and 31 miscellaneous sites are useful in designing flood-control works for maximum safety from flood damage. The coefficients ranged from 2.06 to 55.2 per day (base e at 25 degrees Celsius). Stream discharges ranged from 0.3 to 37.0 cubic feet per second, most discharges being less than 10 cubic feet per second. Data also were collected for evaluation of the energy-dissipation model. The escape coefficient of 0.090 per foot at 25 degrees Celsius may be used for small streams similar to those studied. For convenience, all fluctuations in the local tilt field of less than 24 hours duration will be designated SP (i.e., short period) tilt events. Three basic categories of waveshape appearance are defined, and the rules for naming the waveforms are outlined. Examples from tilt observations at four central California sites are provided. \r\n\r\nSection II contains some coseismic tilt data. Fourteen earthquakes in central California, ranging in magnitude from 2.9 to 5.2, were chosen for study on four tiltmeters within 10 source dimensions of the epicenters. The raw records from each of the four tiltmeters at the times of the earthquakes were photographed and are presented in this section. \r\n\r\nSection III contains documentation of computer programs used in the analysis of the short period tilt data. Program VECTOR computes the difference vector of a tilt event and displays the sequence of events as a head-to-tail vector plot. Program ONSTSP 1) requires two component digitized tilt data as input, 2) scales and plots the data, and 3) computes and displays the amplitude, azimuth, and normalized derivative of the tilt amplitude. Program SHARPS computes the onset sharpness, (i.e., the normalized derivative of the tilt amplitude at the onset of the tilt event) as a function of source-station distance from a model of creep-related tilt changes. The beds above and below the injection zone were subjected to attack by the acid waste. By 1969, effects of the waste were detected in the water of the well monitoring the upper part of the Floridan aquifer at 1,400 feet. The disposal well was deepened late in 1971 to 2,242 feet in an attempt to stop the upward migration of waste. The results of research investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey during 1966-73 indicated that the waste continued to move upward and laterally. This investigated, continued by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1973-1975, shows that the remedial actions of repairing the disposal well liner and injecting periodically into the deep monitor well at 2,060 feet failed to contain the wastes within the lower part of the Floridan aquifer. The data collected by the Survey are supported by the owner 's chemical-oxygen-demand and pH determinations. A hydraulic connection between the injection zone and the overlying monitoring zone is implied. Plans call for injecting into deepter strata. During 1972-74, snowmelt runoff (April-July) accounted for 65 percent of the water and sediment discharge. Approximately 90 percent of the sediment is transported in suspension.</p><p>Sediment measured at 16 gutterflow stations at the base of highway cut-slopes indicates that less than 100 tons (91 tonnes) of fine sediment per year are contributed to the lake from all California State highway cuts. The data were obtained from geologic and geophysical studies of nine cored test holes, from laboratory analyses of samples of the aquifer materials, and from recent stratigraphic studies by other investigators. </p><p>The Georgetown Formation and the Edwards Group or their equivalent stratigraphic units are extensively exposed in central Texas and they occur in the subsurface throughout southern Texas. They consist of a complex sequence of carbonate rocks deposited during Early Cretaceous time under different depositional conditions. Within the study area, the thickness of the carbonate rocks ranges from less than 400 feet (122 m) in the eastern part of the area to more than 600 feet (183 m) in the southwestern part. </p><p>The depositional environments significantly affected the texture and the composition of the sediments. The Maverick Basin in the southwestern part of the study area was a euxinic basin surrounded by a barrier rudistid reef. Fine-grained carbonates and some associated evaporites occur within this basin. The San Marcos Platform in the eastern part of the study area was intermittently submerged by a transgressing continental sea. Much of the sediments are extensively reworked and burrowed by marine organisms. Several thick sequences of dolomites, evaporites, and associated collapsed deposits occur on the San Marcos Platform. The carbonates of the San Marcos Platform are extensively dissolved within the fresh-water zone. Much of the dissolution is selective of beds containing evaporites or porous dolomites. </p><p>The dominant structural feature of the study area is a broad homocline that extends from nearly flat-lying beds on the Edwards Plateau to steeply dipping beds of the deep subsurface of the Gulf Coastal Plain. The homocline is interrupted by the Balcones Fault Zone, which is a zone of normal faults that extend across the study area.
