Populations of roach are presently isolated from one another due to degradation of stream habitats between them. We examined eight populations, each from a tributary system of the San Joaquin River, to determine if morphological differences existed among them. These tributaries are now isolated from one another by dams or areas of unsuitable habitat. We found significant differences among drainages for all of the characters studied. Discriminant analysis classified 70% of the individuals to the correct drainage. The differences were not clinal because adjacent drainages were not grouped together in discriminant space. The most distinct population was as different from a nearby population (36 stream km) as from populations from other more distant tributaries and could possibly merit subspecies status. These results suggest that each population has been isolated long enough to develop morphological adaptions to local environment conditions. With one exception, the differences among the populations were too small for formal taxonomic recognition but suggest that management should focus on preserving local populations throughout the species' range, rather than scattered populations in a few reserves. This policy would serve to protect the genetic diversity of California roach, local aquatic habitats, and other even more poorly known species.
","language":"English","doi":"10.1016/0006-3207(92)91146-J","usgsCitation":"Brown, L.R., Moyle, P.B., Bennett, W.A., and Quelvog, B.D., 1992, Implications of morphological variation among populations of California roach Lavinia symmetricus (Cyprinidae) for conservation policy: Biological Conservation, v. 62, no. 1, p. 1-10, https://doi.org/10.1016/0006-3207(92)91146-J.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"10","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":357489,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Joaquin River","volume":"62","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5c111ffae4b034bf6a81b686","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brown, Larry R. 0000-0001-6702-4531 lrbrown@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6702-4531","contributorId":1717,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Larry","email":"lrbrown@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":745571,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moyle, Peter B.","contributorId":117099,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Moyle","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":7214,"text":"University of California, Davis","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":745572,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bennett, William A.","contributorId":88988,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bennett","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":745573,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Quelvog, Brian D.","contributorId":208004,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Quelvog","given":"Brian","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":745574,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These elements are essential for waterfowl to successfully complete aspects of the annual cycle such as molt and reproduction. Moist-soil vegetation also has the advantages of consistent production of foods across years with varying water availability, low management costs, high tolerance to diverse environmental conditions, and low deterioration rates of seeds after flooding.
\n
\n
The amount of seed produced differs among plant species and varies annually depending on environmental conditions and management practices. Further, many moist-soil impoundments contain diverse vegetation, and seed production by a particular plant species usually is not uniform across an entire unit. Consequently, estimating total seed production within an impoundment is extremely difficult.
\n
\n
The chemical composition of seeds also varies among plant species. For example, beggartick seeds contain high amounts of protein but only an intermediate amount of minerals. In contrast, barnyardgrass is a good source of minerals but is low in protein. Because of these differences, it is necessary to know the amount of seed produced by each plant species if the nutritional resources provided in an impoundment are to be estimated.
\n
\n
The following technique for estimating seed production takes into account the variation resulting from different environmental conditions and management practices as well as differences in the amount of seed produced by various plant species. The technique was developed to provide resource managers with the ability to make quick and reliable estimates of seed production. Although on-site information must be collected, the amount of field time required is small (i.e., about 1 min per sample); sampling normally is accomplished on an area within a few days. Estimates of seed production derived with this technique are used, in combination with other available information, to determine the potential number of waterfowl use-days available and to evaluate the effects of various management strategies on a particular site.
","largerWorkTitle":"Waterfowl Management Handbook","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Laubhan, M.K., 1992, A technique for estimating seed production of common moist soil plants, 8 p.","productDescription":"8 p.","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":294494,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54252e9be4b0e641df8a6e3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Laubhan, Murray K.","contributorId":100324,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laubhan","given":"Murray","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":502222,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is an arid region with harsh climate, little vegetation, sparse population, and an average elevation of over 3,500 feet. Little is known about the large populations of three species of flamingos which nest and feed in the altiplano lakes. In a study funded by the National Geographic Society satellite data (Landsat MSS and TM data) were used to map the location of major water bodies and to analyze the spectral characteristics of the aquatic ecosystems in the altiplano. Based on the hypothesis that there are predictable relationships between stream variables and fish community structure, overall stream condition has been assessed using indices such as the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) (Karr, 1981; Karr et al., 1986). The IBI integrates a wide range of information pertaining to fish community structure that reflects the prevailing chemical, physical, and biological condition of the stream. Assessments made using the IBI have been correlated to actual stream conditions and appear to be sensitive to a wide range of environmental degradation (Fausch et al., 1990).","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ecological Indicators","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier Science","publisherLocation":"New York, NY","doi":"10.1007/978-1-4615-4659-7_19","usgsCitation":"Hoefs, N.J., and Boyle, T.P., 1992, Contribution of fish community metrics to the index of biotic integrity in two Ozark rivers: Ecological Indicators, v. 1, no. Montmorillonite, the weakest of the clay minerals, undergoes a gradual phase transition to illite with depth. In order to compare the shear stresses supported by these two minerals with those thought to exist along the San Andreas, we have measured the frictional sliding behavior of pure montmorillonite, mixed montmorillonite/illite and pure illite as a function of effective pressure, simulating burial to seismogenic depths. Strength measurements verify that the effective pressure law for friction holds for these minerals under all conditions. That is, the measured stresses were a function of the effective pressure, Pc - Pp, independent of the choice of confining and pore pressure. This relation, common for many other rock types, was previously untested for these clays under most conditions. Results show that dry samples were consistently stronger than saturated samples, and that strength increased with increasing illite content. In addition, the coefficient of friction increased as a function of pressure for the montmorillonite gouge, but was independent of pressure for the illite gouge. This behavior may be explained by the presence of loosely bonded interlayer water in the montmorillonite, which is squeezed out at higher pressures, changing the frictional characteristics of the clay. The nonexpanding illite was not affected in this way. For the montmorillonite-to-illite compositional profile, an average shear stress of 60 MPa was determined for crustal conditions to 15 km, assuming a normal hydrostatic gradient. If montmorillonite remains stable at depth, the resulting average shear stress is reduced to 30 MPa. Distrinctive dark opal-CT and quartz chertz found in distal basins of the Monterey Formation are the result of burial diagenesis of pure biosiliceous oozes (biosiliceous oozes without significant admixtures of clay) and are therefore evidence of intensified coastal upwelling during the early middle Miocene. Dating of six sections of the Monterey Formation, largely by diatom biostratigraphy, suggests that at the Point Reyes and Point Año Nuevo sections in north-central California, the age of the earliest chert intervals is between 13.8 and 15.0 Ma, and 14.3 and 14.8 Ma, respectively. In south-central California, ages from the Shell Beach, Mussel Rock, and Lions Head sections imply that the age of the base of the chert intervals is between 12.7 and 13.3 Ma. Both ages correlate to an early middle Miocene high latitude cooling step that resulted in more vigorous surface water circulation, upwelling of nutrient-rich waters, and increased biosiliceous sedimentation in the North Pacific. The north-south difference in age of the base of the chert interval probably reflects a progressive intensification of the California Current from 15.0 to 12.7 Ma.

The age of the onset of biosiliceous sedimentation at DSDP sites of the northeastern Pacific is also generally younger at the more southern sites; however, these particular DSDP sites were located some distance from the centres of coastal upwelling and are not as reliable indicators of the intensification of upwelling along the California margin.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Upwelling systems: Evolution Since the early Miocene","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of London","doi":"10.1144/GSL.SP.1992.064.01.28","usgsCitation":"White, L., Garrison, R.E., and Barron, J.A., 1992, Miocene intensification of upwelling along the California margin as recorded in siliceous facies of the Monterey Formation and offshore DSDP sites, chap. of Upwelling systems: Evolution Since the early Miocene: Special Papers of the Geological Society of London, v. 64, p. 429-442, https://doi.org/10.1144/GSL.SP.1992.064.01.28.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"429","endPage":"442","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":416704,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Pacific Ocean","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.19093386559643,\n              32.48418519973471\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.60837908792217,\n              32.58901431561772\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.97135886563308,\n              33.49558798292193\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.18212479948085,\n              34.37726962311825\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.05772080133403,\n              35.007559491009246\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.27409553329665,\n              35.55952731958149\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.29107699298334,\n              36.74449849031693\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.46494556932856,\n              37.967398417559906\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.40319365649935,\n              39.27704217811683\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.43132818423368,\n              39.816039165148396\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.89109249176676,\n              40.42159602811063\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.70713530197526,\n              41.264399740790594\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.80712709661253,\n              42.01846616014922\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.81259873418318,\n              42.01668342805516\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.00313345645952,\n              40.61277749989233\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.52827072761755,\n              38.710758187294545\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.54409829584716,\n              36.33708738297268\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.05130230851995,\n              34.50570405536621\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.15365128528586,\n              32.25977062759304\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.38733899388825,\n              32.428530126939094\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.19093386559643,\n              32.48418519973471\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1992-09-11","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Summerhayes, C.
