This atlas consists of three maps that show the general distribution of dissolved solids, hardness, and orthophosphate in the streams and lakes within the Suwannee River Water Management District. The atlas was prepared in cooperation with the Water Management District to provide pertinent water-quality information relating to the objectives of the Florida State Water Resources Act of 1972. Under the provisions of this act, the Water Management District is required to establish a regional water-use plan, issue permits for water-use and water-resources related construction, and authorize the export of water. The data presented on these maps will be useful to those concerned with water management and use, in assessing regional water quality, and in establishing a base for comparison with future quality data.
The ranges of concentration shown on the maps represent maximum concentrations in surface water during the sampling period, January 1965-September 1970. Concentrations are plotted at the sampling sites and are the major criteria for determining the extent of concentration ranges. In some cases the drainage basin boundaries are used in defining concentration range boundaries because the quantity and quality of surface runoff is characteristic of the environment of the basin and may be entirely different from the runoff of adjacent basins. Within drainage basins, individual streams and local drainage divides define concentration boundaries. Some areas, although adjacent to each other in the same basin, have entirely different concentration ranges. For example, an area containing dissolved-solids concentrations in the 0-25 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) range may be adjacent to an area in which concentrations exceed 100 mg/1, as in the southeast part of Jefferson County. Concentration boundaries in these areas were selected by extending each range about halfway between the two sampling sites, as opposed to grading an intermediate range between them without supporting data. As the data are sparse in many areas, regional concentration patterns are generalized and local variations may be expected to exist.

The Federal Disaster Assistance Administration estimated that 175 homes were damaged to at least half their value, 4,500 received some damage, with additional losses to schools, utilities, hospitals, and transportation systems. Early estimates indicated that damages may be as high as $20 million.
During the time of flooding the U.S. Geological Survey obtained aerial photography and streamflow data to document the disaster. This report shows on photomosaic base maps the extent of flooding in the Lansing area. Areas included are the lower reaches of the Red Cedar River and Sycamore Creek and the Grand River downstream from the confluence of the Red Cedar River. Little flooding occurred on the Grand River upstream from the Red Cedar so, although aerial photography was obtained for that reach, photomosaics were not prepared. Streamflow data collected at five gaging stations near Lansing are given. Information on the magnitude of the flood should be useful in making decisions regarding use of flood plains in the area. It is one of a series of reports on the April 1975 flood in the Lansing metropolitan area.

central Pennsylvania","docAbstract":"Rainfall, streamflow, stream chemical, and sediment discharge data were collected from Bixler Run near Loysville, Pa., during the period February 1954 to September 1969, as part of a project to evaluate sediment discharge from an agricultural area that had been adopting soil-conservation techniques at a moderate rate. The study was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, State Conservation Commission.
Sediment yields from the basin averaged 64 tons per square mile (22.4 tonnes per square kilometre) per year, approximately 25 percent less than yields from the surrounding area. The relation between water discharge and suspended-sediment discharge remained constant during the study. Suspended-sediment concentrations in the streamflow were less than 10 milligrams per litre 70 percent of the time. The concentration of chloride ions in the streamflow increased from the period 1959 to 1969. Ground water maintained flows at the gaging location at a rate of 1.9 cubic feet per second (0.054 cubic metres per second) during the period of data collection.

\nThe map of average annual runoff (fig. 1), in inches per year, shows the geographical distribution of runoff in tributary streams for the years 1951—80; it describes the magnitudes and variations of runoff nationwide. The map was prepared to reflect the runoff of tributary streams rather than in major rivers in order to represent more accurately the local or small scale variation in runoff with precipitation and other geographical characteristics. The 1951–80 period was selected to conform to the period chosen by the World Meteorological Organization for study of climatic variations. The map should not be used to estimate the streamflow for any specific site. More detailed information for a specific area can be obtained from streamflow data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, other Federal agencies, and State agencies.

The area designated for possible oil and gas lease sale as modified from BLM memorandum 3310 #42 (722) and referred to therein as the North Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) contains about 58,300 sq km of shelf beneath water depths of less than 200 m and lies chiefly within the Georges Bank basin. The oldest sediments drilled or dredged on the bordering Continental Slope are sandstone, clay, and silt of Upper Cretaceous age. In Upper Cretaceous exposures, on Marthas Vineyard and nearby New England islands, the predominant lithology appears to be clay. About 125 km northeast of the eastern tip of Georges Bank, the Shell B-93 well penetrated clays and silts of Upper and Lower Cretaceous age above dense Jurassic carbonate rocks which overlie a basement of lower Paleozoic slate, schist, quartzite, and granite.
Structurally, the Georges Bank basin is a westerly trending trough which opens to the west-southwest. Post-Paleozoic sediments are more than 8 km thick in parts of the basin. Major structural features appear to be directly related to basement structures. Local anticlines, probably caused by differential compaction over basement flexures and horst blocks or by later uplift along basement faults are reflected principally in Lower Cretaceous and older sediments, though some of these features continue upward to within 0.7 of a second (about 650 m) of the seafloor.
Tertiary deposits in the Georges Bank basin are probably up to a kilometre thick and are made up of poorly consolidated sand, silt, and clay. The Cretaceous section is inferred to be up to 3.5 km thick and to be mainly clastics -- shale, siltstone, calcareous shale, changing to limestone in the lowest part of the system. Jurassic rocks in the deepest part of the basin appear to be about 3.6 to 4.0 km thick and probably consist mainly of dense carbonates.
Potential source rocks in the Georges Bank basin may include organic-rich Cretaceous shale and carbonaceous Jurassic limestone. By analogy with the Scotian Shelf, Cretaceous sandstones are considered to be potential reservoir rocks. Local zones of porous dolomite are believed to be present in carbonate rocks of Jurassic age and should not be overlooked as potential reservoirs.
Structural highs related to draping and differential compaction over basement blocks could be important potential petroleum traps. Additional traps may include reef structures near the shelf edge, updip pinchouts, and stratigraphic traps in both clastic and carbonate sediment.
A statistical mean for the undiscovered recoverable petroleum resources is calculated to be 0.9 billion barrels of oil and 4.2 trillion cubic feet of gas. At the 5 percent probability level (1 in 20 chance) the undiscovered recoverable petroleum resources are calculated to be 2.4 billion barrels of oil and 12.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. These undiscovered recoverable petroleum resources are those quantities of oil and gas that may be reasonably expected to exist in favorable settings, but which have not yet been identified by drilling. Such estimates, therefore, carry a high degree of uncertainty.
Environmental studies of Georges Bank indicated a low-moderate risk from petroleum development. However, the risk estimate is based on very limited data. Drift bottle returns used to infer oil spill trajectories show about a 2% overall recovery rate. Meteorologic data comes mainly from nearby land areas and from ships attempting to avoid storms. Seismicity on Georges Bank is low. This may reflect, in large part, the difficulty of land-based stations in recording earthquakes far from the coast. Direct data on the engineering properties of shallow buried sediment comes mainly from two Texas Tower surveys of limited areas on Georges Shoal and Nantucket Shoals made in the early 1950's. The 17 holes (most less than 30 m deep) reveal some silty layers below loose sand and much lateral variability in sediment type over short distances.
The technology for exploration at the required water depths (20 m - 200 m) is available. Mobil drilling units are in great demand around the world and will have to be brought in from other areas along with skilled manpower. Our highest estimates indicate 50 platforms, 800 producing wells, 1,100 km of pipeline, and 5 onshore terminals may be needed. The time frame for production, using our high estimates (5% probability) for the undiscovered recoverable resources, could include 4-5 years for significant development, 6-7 years until production commences, and 18 years until peak production.

The study covered all or parts of 21 counties and included data for 28 sediment-sampling stations located in parts of 4 major river basins, the Roanoke, Pamlico, Neuse, and Cape Fear. Annual suspended-sediment yields ranged from 333 to 12 tons per square mile (117 to 4.2 tonnes per square kilometre). Streams in the Piedmont region have the highest yields. Suspended-sediment yield decreases in an eastward direction from the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain region.
Sediment characteristics are directly affected by topography, storm runoff, geology, land use, and man-made detention structures. At one sampling station in the 1973 water year 44 percent of the suspended sediment tonnage was transported during 34 days of high flow. In the Piedmont region, sediment yields vary indirectly with the percentage of forest cover in the basin, but there appears to be no definite relationship between forest cover and yield in the Coastal Plain region. Large lakes act as sediment-detention reservoirs. Average annual sediment yields ranged from 98 to 333 tons per square mile (34 to 117 tonnes per square kilometre) for 3 headwater streams which flow into Hyco Lake in Person County; however, the yield for the station less than 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) downstream from Hyco Dam was about 12 tons per square mile (4.2 tonnes per square kilometre).
Most suspended sediment during floods in Piedmont streams ranges in size from sand to silt, whereas the suspended material in flooding streams in the Coastal Plain is generally clay size.

Local officials estimated a loss of \\$775,000 in property damage. Damage from flooding by the Red Cedar River was caused primarily by inundation, rather than by water moving at high velocity, as is common when many streams are flooded. During the flood of April 1975 many basements were flooded as well as the lower floors of some homes in the flood plain. Additional damage occurred in places when sewers backed up and flooded basements, and when ground water seeped through basement walls and floors—situations that affected many homes including those that were well outside of the flood plain.
During the time of flooding the U.S. Geological Survey obtained aerial photography and data on a streamflow to document the disaster. This report shows on a photomosaic base map the extent of flooding along the Red Cedar River at Williamston, during the flood. It also presents data obtained at stream-gaging stations near Williamston, as well as the results of peak-flow discharge measurements made on the Red Cedar River at Michigan State Highway M-52 east of the city. Information on the magnitude of the flood can guide in making decisions pertaining to the use of flood-plains in the area. It is one of a series of reports on the April 1975 flood in the Lansing metropolitan area.

Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.
Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes and reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. More information is given under the headings \"Publications\" on page 6.
