Because of armoring of the channel, scour has been limited to approximately 1 foot (0.3 metre) in the upper 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometres).</p><p>This report presents information useful in determining long-term erosion effects below Pleasant Valley Dam, in assessing the feasibility of a proposed bypass channel versus retention of the main channel in its present state, and in determining man's influence on river morphology.</p><p>Bedload transport is dependent on the hydraulics of a section and the availability of material. Ninety-eight percent by weight of the sampled bedload transported between sites 1 and 6 in the study reach was finer than 8 millimetres, although only 6 to 12 percent of the material in the bed available for transport was finer than 8 millimetres. Bank material, a prime source of new material for transport, is predominantly finer than 16 millimetres.</p><p>Bank erosion is accelerated by wide ranges in flow release. The bank-erosion rates interpreted from aerial photographs indicate average annual erosion rates of 750 tons (680 tonnes) from 1947 to 1967, 1,970 tons (1,790 tonnes) from 1967 to 1968, and 2,020 tons (1,830 tonnes) from 1968 to 1971. These rates are compatible with the water discharge-sediment discharge relation developed from field data collected during 1972-73.</p><p>Hydraulic geometry of the six sites indicates a shift in the river system regime since 1954. These changes have progressed downstream from the dam to a point between sites 4 and 5. Farther downstream channel changes will occur until the channel stabilizes.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7549","usgsCitation":"Williams, R.P., 1975, Erosion and sediment transport in the Owens River near Bishop, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 75-49, vi, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7549.","productDescription":"vi, 49 p.","numberOfPages":"67","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":358905,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":" https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0049/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159679,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0049/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Bishop","otherGeospatial":"Owens River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.75,\n              37.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.25,\n              37.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.25,\n              37.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.75,\n              37.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.75,\n              37.25\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fe026","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, Rhea P.","contributorId":87114,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Rhea","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203388,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the course of the studies, however, other investigations were made, primarily to find answers to specific problems that arose from time to time. The large amount of analytical and related data obtained is here reported, with sufficient explanatory material to bring the data into proper perspective. Although the Survey has not made a comprehensive overall study of the geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, and petrography of the shale, sufficient information has been obtained to provide a sound basis for possible mining and processing of the shale in the future.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"s.n.],","doi":"10.3133/ofr75135","usgsCitation":"Brown, A., and May, I., 1975, Preliminary report on the economic potential of the Chattanooga Shale in Tennessee, data as of 1962: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-135, ix, 328 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75135.","productDescription":"ix, 328 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146830,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0135/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41208,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0135/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e107","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brown, Andrew","contributorId":64233,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Andrew","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166732,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"May, Irving","contributorId":39771,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"May","given":"Irving","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166731,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The strong correlation between geologic conditions and the amount of earthquake damage in 1906 emphasizes the importance of this influence and demonstrates the need for seismic zonation. Seismic zonation can provide the logical basis for preparation of special-purpose land-use maps that, with appropriate public policy, would be a significant step toward reducing the currently expected catastrophic effects of another great earthquake (Algermissen, 1972). </p><p>Seismic zonation requires a set of integrated multidisciplinary predictions about the geologic effects of potential earthquakes. To illustrate a strategy for making such predictions, a demonstration profile has been chosen perpendicular to a segment of the San Andreas fault, along which a magnitude 6.5 earthquake has been postulated. This profile includes a wide variety of geologic conditions and provides a means for application of the analyses presented in the preceding six papers. </p><p>Earthquake hazards to life and property originate from (1) surface faulting, (2) ground shaking, (3) flooding, (4) liquefaction, and (5) landsliding. The extent to which each of these geologic effects can be predicted for an earthquake of a given magnitude and location depends on the current state of the art. To illustrate techniques and data currently available, each effect is considered for the postulated earthquake. </p><p>This paper does not provide final estimates for the total earthquake hazard along the demonstration profile. Such an objective would require analysis of individual manmade structures as well as consideration of earthquakes of other sizes and locations. Instead, this paper illustrates the extent to which the above effects can be predicted for an earthquake of this given size and location. Such an analysis demonstrates a methodology for seismic zonation based on available data. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/pp941A","usgsCitation":"Borcherdt, R.D., 1975, Studies for seismic zonation of the San Francisco Bay region: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 941, 101 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp941A.","productDescription":"101 p.","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":32308,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0941a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118421,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0941a/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a2d1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Borcherdt, Roger D. 0000-0002-8668-0849 borcherdt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8668-0849","contributorId":2373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Borcherdt","given":"Roger","email":"borcherdt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":151492,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Amador Group was originally defined at its type locality on the south bank of the Cosumnes River in Amador County to include the Cosumnes Formation and the conformably overlying Logtown Ridge Formation, but the new data indicate that the lower boundary of the type Logtown Ridge should be located 600 m farther west (downsection) than originally designated and that this boundary is a fault. The strata that were originally called the Cosumnes Formation are part of a lithologically diverse assemblage of tectonically intermixed rocks that constitute a newly recognized melange and thus are not a formational rock-stratigraphic unit as the earlier workers believed. Thus, the names Cosumnes Formation and Amador Group are both inappropriate in their type area and are abandoned.</p><p>The Logtown Ridge Formation is here divided into four members, some of which cross what earlier was considered to be a formational boundary of the Logtown Ridge with overlapping pyroclastic strata. The outcrop mapping requires additional changes, although of lesser importance, in the identification and correlation of other Mesozoic rocks in Amador County.</p><p>The newly recognized melange forms a 4-km-wide belt underlying the Logtown Ridge Formation. In addition to the type section of the abandoned Cosumnes Formation and scattered fault-bounded blocks of strata of Cosumnes lithology, the melange comprises rocks heretofore mapped as \"western belt of Calaveras Formation,\" considered to be of Paleozoic age. Single clasts of this huge tectonic breccia range from a few centimeters to a few kilometers in maximum dimension. Distinctive strata are generally disrupted, and pervasive shearing is common. In the absence of fossils, no age of original deposition can be assigned to any clast or matrix of the melange, but on the basis of indirect structural evidence, the intermixing that formed the melange probably took place during the Late Jurassic or before, and therefore the now sheared and faulted strata must originally have been at least this old.</p><p>Available data are ambiguous but suggest that rocks were intermixed to form the melange when the strata were horizontal or nearly so. Similarly, the overlying Logtown Ridge and Mariposa Formations were faulted when these rocks were essentially horizontal. The entire section was subsequently tilted to its present, nearly vertical position.</p><p>Traditional syntheses of the tectonic history of the Sierra foothills argue that the faults there have always been steeply dipping. Although this may be true for some faults, the new interpretation suggests that most faulting occurred before the section was steeply tilted. Neither suggestion can yet be proved, but we maintain that the highly deformed rocks mapped in Amador County represent primarily the effects of subduction at a continental margin, possibly augmented by gravity tectonics in a trough of sediment accumulation there. On the basis of the ages of affected strata, this period of subduction was Late Jurassic but possibly began at an earlier time. If this interpretation of the melange in Amador County is correct, a belt of&nbsp;similarly deformed rocks should extend far beyond the limits of the study area.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp827","usgsCitation":"Duffield, W.A., and Sharp, R.V., 1975, Geology of the Sierra Foothills Melange and adjacent areas, Amador County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 827, Report: iii, 30 p.; 1 Plate: 40.99 x 56.88 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp827.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 30 p.; 1 Plate: 40.99 x 56.88 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139598,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0827/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":112646,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0827/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":369221,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0827/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","datum":"Mean sea level","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Amador County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.93750000,\n              38.28333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              38.28333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              38.56666667\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.93750000,\n              38.56666667\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.93750000,\n              38.28333333\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e50b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Duffield, Wendell A.","contributorId":14363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Duffield","given":"Wendell","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151797,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sharp, Robert V.","contributorId":89857,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sharp","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151798,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The systems studied comprise those at Stillwater and Soda Lakes-Upsal Hogback in the Carson Desert, Gerlach, Fly Ranch-Granite Range, and Double Hot Springs in the Black Rock Desert, Brady's Hot Springs, Leach Hot Springs in Grass Valley, Buffalo Valley Hot Springs, and Sulphur Hot Springs in Ruby Valley. \r\n\r\nThe investigation focused on (1) delineating of areas of high heat flow associated with rising thermal ground water, (2) determining the nature of the discharge parts of the hydrothermal systems, (3) estimating heat discharge from the systems, (4) estimating water discharge from the systems, (5) obtaining rough estimates of, conductive heat flow outside areas of hydrothermal discharge, and (6) evaluating several investigative techniques that would yield the required information quickly and at relatively low cost. The most useful techniques were shallow test drilling to obtain geologic, hydraulic, and thermal data and hydrogeologic mapping of the discharge areas. \r\n\r\nThe systems studied are in the north-central part of the Basin and Range province. Exposed volcanic rocks of latest Tertiary and Quaternary age are chiefly basaltic. Basaltic terranes are generally regarded as less favorable for geothermal resources than terranes that contain large volumes of young volcanic mocks of felsic to intermediate composition. Most of the known hydrothermal systems are associated with Basin and Range faults which are caused by crustal extension across the province. An area of high heat flow centered at Battle Mountain and possibly other areas of high heat flow may be related to crustal heat sources. However, some of the hydrothermal systems studied appear to be related to deep circulation of meteoric water in areas of 'normal' regional heat flow rather than to shallow-crustal heat sources. \r\n\r\nDischarge temperatures of thermal springs in the region range from slightly above mean annual air temperature (8?-12?C at most places) to boiling or slightly hotter. Geochemical data indicate that, in the major systems, subsurface temperatures at which thermal waters equilibrate with reservoir rocks range from 150? to more than 200?C. These data also indicate that the major systems are of the hot-water type rather than the vapor-dominated type. Depths of thermal-water circulation probably range from 2 to 6 kilometres in areas of 'normal' regional heat flow (~2 heatflow units) and from 1 to 3 kilometres in areas of high heat flow (~3-4 heat-flow units) such as near Battle Mountain. \r\n\r\nMost of the heat is discharged from the hydrothermal systems studied by (1) conduction through near-surface materials heated as a consequence of thermal-water convection, (2) convection as springflow, and (3) convection as steam discharge from spring pools, vents, fumaroles, and cracks. The mate of heat discharge by radiation from warm ground and by convection as lateral ground-water outflow is believed to be small in most systems and is not estimated. \r\n\r\nEstimates of net heat discharge from the systems studied range from about 0.8 x 106 calories per second at Buffalo Valley Hot Springs to about 14 x 106 calories per second at Stillwater. These estimates represent the approximate magnitude of the excess heat discharge from the thermal areas that results from the upward convection of hot water from deep sources. Water discharges from the hydrothermal systems by springflow, evapotranspiration, steam discharge, and lateral ground-water outflow. Estimated discharges range from about 0.2 x 106cubic metres per year from the Buffalo Valley Hot Springs system to about 3 x 106 cubic metres per year from the Stillwater system. \r\n\r\nIn most of the hydrothermal systems studied and, by inference, in other similar systems in northern and central Nevada, the scale for potential .commercial development for production of electricity or for other uses may be constrained by the","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7556","usgsCitation":"Olmsted, F.H., Glancy, P., Harrill, J., Rush, F., and Van Denburgh, A.S., 1975, Preliminary hydrogeologic appraisal of selected hydrothermal systems in northern and central Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-56, xi, 267 p. :ill. ;27 cm.; (360 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7556.","productDescription":"xi, 267 p. :ill. ;27 cm.; (360 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147396,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0056/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44190,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0056/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abbe4b07f02db672aee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Olmsted, F. Although the Develco discriminators were designed for this application and a matching Develco compensation discriminator was purchased, effective use of this system for subtractive compensation has been blocked by the inadequate (frequency dependent) matching of the phase of the compensation signal to that of the data signal at the point compensation is carried out in the data discriminators. John Van Schaack has ameliorated the phase mismatch problem by an empirical alteration of the compensation discriminator input bandpass filter. We have selected a set (of eight) Develco discriminators and adjusted their compensation signal input levels to minimize spurious signals (noise) originating from tape speed irregularities. The sensitivity of the data discriminators was adjusted so that deviations of +125 Hz and -125 Hz produced output signals of +2.00 volts and -2.00 volts, respectively. The eight data discriminators are driven by a multiplex signal on a single tape track (subcarriers 680, 1020, 1360, 1700, 2040, 2380, 2720, and 3060 Hz). The Develco-supplied compensation discriminator requires an unmodulated 3125 Hz signal on a separate tape track.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr75663","usgsCitation":"Eaton, J.P., 1975, Notes on some experiments on the application of subtractive compensation to USGS seismic magnetic tape recording and playback systems: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-663, ii, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75663.","productDescription":"ii, 36 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":142676,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr_75_663.gif"},{"id":257112,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0663/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db6969dc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eaton, Jerry P.","contributorId":22341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eaton","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158158,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Samples of oil shale from two drill cores and one composite sample from the Colony mine were split and studied by X-ray diffraction methods to determine their bulk mineralogy. Oil yield data were obtained for these samples by conventional Fischer assay analysis and samples of the spent oil shale were studied by X-ray diffraction to determine the changes which resulted from pyrolysis. The amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from 31 spent oil-shale samples were determined using hot distilled water, hot 0.1M KOH, and hot 0.5M KOH as solvents. Extractable Al<sub>2</sub>O and SiO<sub>2</sub> were also determined for the 31 spent oil-shale samples using hot 0.1M NaOH and hot 0.5M NaOH.</p><p>Correlation of the relative abundance of analcime--Na[Al, Si<sub>2</sub>O<sub>6</sub>]. H<sub>2</sub>0-- in raw oil-shale samples with the amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extracted from pyrolyzed oil shale demonstrates that analcime contributes significantly to all of these elements after it has been subjected to pyrolysis. Because of the large contribution of SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from pyrolyzed analcime-bearing oil shale using caustic solvents, there may be significant problems in obtaining leachates high in Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>content and low in SiO<sub>2</sub> content where analcime is present with dawsonite--NaAl(OH)<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub>. This consideration is important to assessment of potential aluminum resources in oil shale. In addition, the concentrations of water soluble Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> in analcime-bearing pyrolyzed oil shale are expected to be significantly greater than from oil shale which is free of analcime and dawsonite and this factor reflects the importance of oil-shale mineralogy to aspects of spent shale disposal</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75156","usgsCitation":"Desborough, G.A., Mountjoy, W., and Frost, I.C., 1975, Influence of caustic and water leaching on analcime-bearing and analcime-free pyrolyzed oil shale from the Green River Formation, Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-156, iii, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75156.","productDescription":"iii, 28 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":430529,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0156/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147417,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0156/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Piceance Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.75,39 ], [ -108.75,40.25 ], [ -107.75,40.25 ], [ -107.75,39 ], [ -108.75,39 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee773","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Desborough, George A.","contributorId":101661,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Desborough","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167580,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mountjoy, Wayne","contributorId":21973,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mountjoy","given":"Wayne","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167578,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Frost, Irving C.","contributorId":28253,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frost","given":"Irving","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167579,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This area could contain from 0.3 to 1.4 billion barrels of oil and from 0.6 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas depending upon the statistical confidence level indicated.</p><p>The known geology of this submerged area, is extrapolated to the offshore from onshore data. The sedimentary rocks are as old as Triassic and as young as Pleistocene. The Mesozoic strata include volcanic rocks, volcanoclastic and marine clastic sediments. Tertiary, rocks from which the oil and gas in Upper Cook Inlet are produced, consist of nonmarine conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and coal. The potential objective section for oil and gas in this OCS area ranges from Middle Jurassic through the Tertiary.</p><p>The present structural configuration of this area is a northeast trending trough filled with Tertiary sediments. The trough is flanked by two major faults, the Bruin Bay fault on the northwest and the Border Ranges fault on the southeast. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if data from four sites, shown in figure 1, substantiate the hypothesis that corroded, broken, or improperly sealed casing permitted relatively fresh water from the shallow aquifers to circulate within the salt zone and that the resulting brine solution leaked downward into permeable zones that would accept the fluid under hydrostatic pressure.</p><p>Strata similar to those penetrated by wells at the four sites (shown in tables 1 and 2) underlie much of central Kansas. Many thousands of oil and gas wells have been drilled through the salt beds, but land subsidence has been reported at few of the sites. Reported sites are near highways, and two well-documented instances of subsidence involve the stability of highway right-of-way. Because many wells have been drilled in remote areas, similar occurrences may remain unreported. The scope of this investigation is limited to the compilation, analysis and interpretation of the available data from four sites shown in figure 1, and the mention of a fifth site.</p><p>The photograph (fig. 2) shows a deteriorated casing pulled from a well located between Sites 3 and 4 in western Rice County. The casing consists of inner and outer pipes with the annular space between filled with cement. The almost complete failure of the outer pipe is evident. The casing is believed to be from the well in the concrete pit that is in the lower right of the photograph. The pond in the background is a sink that has developed near the well; detailed historical data, however, were unavailable for further study of this site.</p><p>The investigation was requested by the Energy Research and Develop-ment Administration (formerly U.S. Atomic Energy Commission) as part of a study of bedded salt in Kansas as a repository for radioactive wastes. Data for the report were collected from the files of several Kansas State agencies; the Highway Commission, Department of Health and Environment, Geological Survey, and the Corporation Commission. The author particularly wishes to thank V. A. Burgat and W. K. Taylor of the Highway Commission;<br>B. F. Latta, D. L. Butcher, and M. W. Glotzback of the Department of Health and Environment; and F. W. Wilson of the Geological Survey for information based on personal observations and for resolving apparent contradictions in the available data.</p><p>The geologic formations that underlie the four sites selected for this study are described in table 1 and information about the oil and gas wells at the sites is given in table 2.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. By showing the general location of landslides that caused damage during that season, the report also shows which parts of the region have the most severe problems. These data supplement earlier reports by the U.S . Geological Survey on the damage caused by landsliding throughout the bay region during the rainy season of 1968-69 (Taylor and Brabb, 1972), in Contra Costa County from 1950 to 1971 (Nilsen and Turner, 1975), in Alameda County from 1940 to 1971 (Nilsen and others, 1975), and in the northeastern part of the city of San Jose from 1967 to 1971 (Nilsen and Brabb, 1972).</p><p>The nine San Francisco Bay region counties are included in this investigation: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San ,Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Landslide costs for these counties during the 1972-73 rainy season (table 1) were at least \\$9,716,284. Of this total, $3,284,918 was direct loss of or damage to private property, mainly by lowering the property market value, and \\$6,431,366 was for public property, chiefly for repair or relocation of roads. The data used to compile these costs are incomplete, thus the total cost could be significantly greater.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf679","usgsCitation":"Taylor, F.A., Nilsen, T., and Dean, R.M., 1975, Distribution and cost of landslides that have damaged manmade structures during the rainy season of 1972-1973 in the San Francisco Bay region, California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 679, 23.72 x 36.99 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf679.","productDescription":"23.72 x 36.99 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":180215,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0679/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":360471,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0679/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -123.75,37 ], [ -123.75,39 ], [ -121.08333333333333,39 ], [ -121.08333333333333,37 ], [ -123.75,37 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649f53","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, Fred A.","contributorId":38142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"Fred","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264838,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nilsen, Tor H.","contributorId":100016,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nilsen","given":"Tor H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264839,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dean, Robert M.","contributorId":79939,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dean","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
