During the period of flooding the U.S. Geological Survey obtained aerial photography of the East Lansing area to document the disaster. The photography has been used to show the extent of flooding on a photomosaic base map. Data on streamflow, collected at the station on the Michigan State University campus, are given. Suspended sediment data collected at the gaging station have been used to estimate sediment transport during the period of the flood. Information on the magnitude of the flood is useful in make decisions regarding the use of flood plains in the area. The report is one of a series of reports on the April 1975 flood in the Lansing metropolitan area.

The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flows at the 2-year recurrence interval and 10-year recurrence interval. A seepage run made October 10, 1974, showed a substantial gain in discharge from site 2 (3.75 ft3/s [cubic feet per second] or 0.11 m3/s (cubic metres per second) to site 6 (30.6 ft3/s or 0.87 m3/s) on the East Branch Eau Claire River and from site 12 (3.98 ft3/s or 0.11 m3/s) to site 16 (18.1 ft3/s or 0.51 m3/s) on the West Branch Eau Claire River; a fairly constant discharge between sites 6 (30.6 ft3/s or 0.87 m3/s) and 11 (32.3 ft3/s or 0.91 m3/s) on the East Branch and sites 16 (18.1 ft3/s or 0.51 m3/s) and 20 (18.8 ft3/s or 0.53 m3/s) on the West Branch; and a substantial gain in discharge from site 23 (57.3 ft3/s or 1.62 m3/s) to site 24 (63.4 ft3/s or 1.80 m3/s) on the Eau Claire River. A gaging station was established at the downstream potential irrigation site to collect continuous stage and discharge data on streamflow to assist the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in the regulation of irrigation withdrawals.

Compilation was originally in the form of 30' x 15' quadrangles at a scale of 1:63,360; these quadrangles have been combined and reduced to form the present map at a scale of 1:250,000. Contour interval is 10, 20, 100, or 500 gammas, depending on the local range in the earth's magnetic field.

The numbers 4-0 correspond to letters A-E, respectively, of the San Francisco intensity scale. The predicted intensity value shown for each site is the maximum of those predicted for the site assuming that a large earthquake were to occur on either the San Andreas or the Hayward fault. The map suggests that an earthquake on either fault could cause as much damage at some sites distant from the faults as at sites in the immediate zone of potential surface faulting.

By utilizing state-of-the-art integrated circuits, the size of the remote unit has been considerably reduced over previous equipment and the power consumption has been decreased by a factor of over 100 to less than 2 milliwatts. This reduction in size and power makes it possible to package the electronic equipment, together with a year's supply of batteries, in a container the size of a tennis-ball can. The field equipment for a short-period station is now sealed in a 3-inch plastic tube 22 inches long . The tube, together with the connecting cable to the telephone terminal, is buried; greatly reducing losses due to water flooding, pilferage, etc. An important addition to the field unit is a daily calibration of the seismometer and amplifier.

Since bedrock geologic features are frequently expressed in the topography the radar lends itself to geologic interpretation. \r\n\r\nThe radar was studied by comparisons with field mapped geologic data first at a scale of approximately 1:125,000 and then at a scale of 1:500,000. The larger scale comparison revealed that faults, minor faults, joint sets, bedding and foliation attitudes, lithology and lithologic contacts all have a topographic expression interpretable on the imagery. Surficial geologic features were far less visible on the imagery over most of the area studied. The smaller scale comparisons revealed a pervasive, near orthogonal fracture set cutting all types and ages of rock and trending roughly N40?E and N30?W. In certain places the strike of bedding and foliation attitudes and some lithologic Contacts were visible in addition to the fractures. \r\n\r\nFracturing in southern New England is apparently far more important than has been previously recognized. The data were collected as part of a joint heat-flow study by the Australian National University (ANU) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the direction of J. C. Jaeger (ANU) and J. H. Sass (USGS). The format is similar to that used for basic data from United States heat-flow determinations (Sass and Munroe, 1974). Each section contains a state map showing the geographic distribution of heat-flow data followed by tables which list individual temperatures, thermal conductivities, and radiogenic heat production values. A companion volume (Bunker and others, 1975) gives details of the heat-production measurements together with individual radioelement concentrations. Localities are arranged in alphabetical order within each state. The methods and techniques of measurements have been described by Sass and others (1971a, b). Unusual methods or procedures which differ markedly from these techniques are noted and described in the comments sections of the tables.

Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States\". Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Michigan are contained in Part 4 of that series.
Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports is limited and they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.
