Eighty-five stream sites in and near the six-county Greater Pittsburgh Region were sampled in mid-June 1971 in mid-October 1972. Data are reported for 89 sites because 4 substitute sites were sampled in the second period. Drainage areas of the basins sampled ranged from 4.1 to 19,5000 square miles (10.6 to 50,500 square kilometres). The chemical analyses included constituents of three general classes: (1) nutrients, (2) activity indicators, and (3) dominant anions. Modification of the natural chemical and physical characteristics of the surface waters by man's activities is evident in some of the data. However, the activities are so diverse in type and in areal extent that their influence in terms of cause and effect is often obscure.
\nNutrient concentrations were high enough to indicate potential problems at about a quarter of the sampling sites. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH values indicated a generally favorable capacity for regeneration or recovery from degradation, although a number a streams east of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers are marginal or lacking in the capacity. Regionally, sulfate is the dominant ion and was observed in concentrations of 40 milligrams per litre or more at 90 percent of the sites. Bicarbonate exceeded 100 milligrams per litre at 22 sites. A moderate to high degree of mineralization, as indicated by conductance readings of more than 500 micromhos per cetrimetre at half of the sampling sites, is a characteristic of the region's surface waters.

Reactions that occurred during 100 days of aging were compared with those in similar solutions without added surfaces, studied in earlier work. \r\n\r\nAdsorption of monomeric species Al(H20)6+3, AlOH(H2O)5+2, and Al(OH)2(H2O 4? on the added surfaces follows a cation exchange mass law equilibrium model, and adsorption is essentially complete in 1 hour. Only minor changes in monomeric aluminum species occurred after that. \r\n\r\nRapid adsorption of polynuclear aluminum hydroxide species also occurs and follows the pattern of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. In the absence of surfaces, the polynuclear ions slowly increase in size and become microcrystalline gibbsite during aging. Electron micrographs showed microcrystalline gibbsite was present or surfaces after aging only 2 days. However, the analytical data suggest this material must have been adsorbed after it had already attained a near-crystalline state. Networks of small stream (drainage area less than 50 square miles or 130 square kilometres) flood gages have been operated throughout the country for a number of years to supplement flood information already available for large streams. The goal in operating these networks has been to obtain sufficient data for estimating flood frequency at ungaged sites with the equivalent accuracy expected from 10 years of observed flood records. In some areas the networks have accumulated sufficient data to satisfy these accuracy goals. A review of these networks, looking toward possible reduction of the number of gages, is now timely. Continued operation of a few selected gages may be desirable to provide a longer time-sample base for improving the flood-frequency estimating equation and(or) to expand the area over which the equations apply.
In 1974, Thomas Maddock III developed a rational method for selecting gages to be retained in a reduced hydrologic network. This method of network analysis seeks the optimum set of gages to be retained for a given level of annual operating costs with the information content of the reduced network being the factor optimized. Application of Maddock's method demonstrated that a considerable number of gages could be eliminated from a network without grossly decreasing its information content.
Maddock's method of analysis is described in detail for a hypothetical network of gages. The method also is applied to actual networks in Montana, Illinois, and Georgia.
The analysis of networks in Montana illustrates the basic approach to selecting an optimal subset from the existing set of gages. The Illinois analysis demonstrated that by retaining only 26 percent of the gages, nearly 63 percent of the original information is retained in the reduced network. Application of the procedure shows how the design of networks in Georgia may be modified because of hydrologic considerations to meet budgetary constraints.

Since bedrock geologic features are frequently expressed in the topography the radar lends itself to geologic interpretation. \r\n\r\nThe radar was studied by comparisons with field mapped geologic data first at a scale of approximately 1:125,000 and then at a scale of 1:500,000. The larger scale comparison revealed that faults, minor faults, joint sets, bedding and foliation attitudes, lithology and lithologic contacts all have a topographic expression interpretable on the imagery. Surficial geologic features were far less visible on the imagery over most of the area studied. The smaller scale comparisons revealed a pervasive, near orthogonal fracture set cutting all types and ages of rock and trending roughly N40?E and N30?W. In certain places the strike of bedding and foliation attitudes and some lithologic Contacts were visible in addition to the fractures. \r\n\r\nFracturing in southern New England is apparently far more important than has been previously recognized. This flow is regulated in part by the dam at Prairie du Sac and influenced considerably by the 47 storage reservoirs and power dams above Lake Wisconsin. The river's gradient and flow characteristics can be illustrated by a river profile and graphs of flow durations, 7-day low flows, and flood-flow recurrence (Hindall and Borman, 1974). Sufficient streamflow data to develop meaningful graphs were available for the gaging site at Muscoda, about the midpoint of the river reach being studied.

The data were collected as part of a joint heat-flow study by the Australian National University (ANU) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the direction of J. C. Jaeger (ANU) and J. H. Sass (USGS). The format is similar to that used for basic data from United States heat-flow determinations (Sass and Munroe, 1974). Each section contains a state map showing the geographic distribution of heat-flow data followed by tables which list individual temperatures, thermal conductivities, and radiogenic heat production values. A companion volume (Bunker and others, 1975) gives details of the heat-production measurements together with individual radioelement concentrations. Localities are arranged in alphabetical order within each state. The methods and techniques of measurements have been described by Sass and others (1971a, b). Unusual methods or procedures which differ markedly from these techniques are noted and described in the comments sections of the tables.

Terrace in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas","docAbstract":"Seismic, magnetic and gravity data indicate that the Chukchi and Beaufort epicontinental seas off northern Alaska overlie three sedimentary basins, or provinces, separated by structural highs of regional extent. The basins trend west to northwest and become increasingly marine from south to north. The Chukchi-Beaufort continental margin is similar to those of Atlantic type.
Hope basin, in the southern Chukchi Sea, overlies strongly deformed Paleozoic to mid-Cretaceous rocks of the Brooks Range orogen. The basin is inferred to contain nonmarine and marine clastic sedimentary rocks in a 1-km-thick Upper Cretaceous(?), a 1 1/2-km-thick Paleogene(?), and a 3/4-km-thick Neogene(?) sequence. A large anticline and many faults and smaller folds disrupt mainly the older sequences.
The Hope basin sedimentary units onlap Herald arch, which trends northwest from Cape Lisburne in the central Chukchi Sea. At the Herald fault zone Brooks Range rocks in the arch are thrust east or northeast over Mississippian to Jurassic shelf carbonate and clastic rocks of the Arctic Alaska (Ellesmerian) basin and overlying Cretaceous flysch and molasse of the Colville geosyncline. These Mississippian to Cretaceous rocks underlie the northeast Chukchi Sea and reportedly are about 10 km thick near the Herald fault zone on the Lisburne Peninsula. The great Chukchi syntaxis in western Brooks Range rocks and structures is thought to result from intersection of the west-trending Brooks Range orogen by the northwest-trending Herald fault zone.
The Mississippian to Jurassic shelf sequence thins northward, and onlaps the Barrow arch, which trends northwest from Point Barrow to 161° W.long., thence west-southwest to the Herald fault zone. The Colville geosyncline sequence oversteps both the pre-Cretaceous rocks and. the Barrow arch to form the North Chukchi basin west of 161°W. long. and the progradational Beaufort continental terrace east of it.
The North Chukchi basin may contain about 6 km of section, probably Cretaceous and Tertiary and possibly deltaic. Diapirs (of Cretaceous shale?) pierce the gently northward-dipping strata of this basin, in places reaching the sea floor.
Thick Tertiary marine and nonmarine clastic rocks of the Camden basin overlie the Cretaceous rocks of the North Slope and inner Beaufort continental terrace east of the Colville River delta. These rocks dip gently seaward west of 146°W. long. but are thrown into long, high-amplitude, east-northeast-striking folds to the east.

Physical, chemical, and biological parameters were determined in surface water, bottom sediment, and bulk precipitation (rainfall and dry fallout).
The geology of the area, bottom sediment, bulk precipitation, natural, urban, and agricultural runoff, and the characteristics of the hydrologic system in the Everglades influence the type and concentration of each chemical constituent and how it affects the water quality.
The quality of surface water in the agricultural area between Lake Okeechobee and the water conservation areas is markedly different from that of other surface water in southeastern Florida. In general, the water in this area is higher in concentrations of most chemical constituents. Man has engaged in cultural activities, both agricultural and urban, which have affected the water quality in the northern and eastern segments of the area of investigation.
The quality of the water improves, however, as it flows to the south and east because there is minimal input from man's activities and many of the constituents are assimilated by plants, sorbed on organic material and clay in the bottom sediments, and entrapped within the sediments. Dilution by rainfall and concentration by evapotranspiration are also important factors that influence the quality of surface water in the area of investigation.
The area of investigation in the Everglades is a sink for macronutrients, trace metals, and chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides. These constituents do not move through the system freely. They become tied up in various complexes and for that reason, the water being delivered to Everglades National Park is of better quality than the water entering the northern edge of the water conservation areas. The various physical and biological processes and chemical reactions combine to improve the water quality as the water flows southward.
The data presented in this report may be used as a baseline for determination of future changes in water quality at the several places in the Everglades where recurrent sampling of rainfall, surface water, and bottom sediments was undertaken during the course of the investigation.
