The primary functions of the Center are data storage and reproduction, and user assistance and training. This publication describes the Data Center operations, data products, services, and procedures for ordering remotely sensed data. The EROS Data Center and its principal facility, the 120,000-square-foot (11,200 m<sup>2</sup>) Karl E. These programs have been supported by State and local agencies and by other agencies of the Federal government, largely to provide data for water-resources development projects, allocations of water, and to inventory of water resources for future planning.</p><p>The recent interest in coal has added new dimensions and greater intensity to the investigations. The work has expanded to include monitoring the environmental effects of coal mining and processing and to determine the availability of additional water supplies for coal-conversion plants and related demands.</p><p>New objectives are now reflected in the program. Much of the work is to assist the Bureau of Land Management in its responsibilities to minimize the possible detrimental effects of coal mining on the public resource lands. The Environmental Protection Agency also supports a significant part of the program. Their support is to assure that water-quality information is collected at key locations, with types of water-quality data and frequency of sampling needed by that agency in the discharge of its function. Relatively large increases in the program have been funded by direct appropriation to the Geological Survey.</p><p>This report describes the water-resources investigation program that is currently in operation. Locations of gaging stations and water-quality measuring sites, frequencies and parameters, and areas of groundwater studies are included in this report. Brief descriptions of coal-related studies by investigators who are headquartered outside the Northern Great Plains coal regions are also included. The lake is in California, near the crest of the Sierra Nevada about 23 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada (fig. 1). The study was undertaken to help develop a better understanding of selected characteristics of a high-altitude dilute-solution lake-stream system and the effect of man on the system. Fallen Leaf Lake and the adjacent streams were chosen for the study because the lake represents an alpine system in a basin that has had limited development for a number of years. Recently, local and state groups have become extremely interested in the effects of man's activities on the condition of the lake.</p><p>The study was designed to: <br>1. Provide data on selected physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of Fallen Leaf Lake and adjacent streams, <br>2. Determine whether the magnitude and changes in magnitude of a number of physical, chemical, and biological variables are affected by natural or cultural processes, <br>3. Characterize a high-altitude, dilute-solution aquatic ecosystem, <br>4. Dak. This report presents statistical data at 29 gaging sites on four of the streams, namely, White River, Ponca Creek, Niobrara River, and Bazile Creek. The fifth stream, Hat Creek, drains a small area in the extreme northwest corner of the State. Because there are no gaging stations on Hat Creek in Nebraska, only the description of the basin is included. The only station on Hat Creek is near Edgemont, S. Dak., and it does not reflect streamflow characteristics in Nebraska.</p><p>Two major irrigation projects have been constructed in the Niobrara River basin since gaging of streamflow began, therefore the complete record of water discharge at some gaging stations includes periods before and after streamflow was affected by diversions to upstream projects. The Whitney Irrigation Project was in operation on the White River before streamflow records were obtained. Streamflow records presented in this report have been computed from data that represent 1974 conditions of development and water use.<br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The basin is along the eastern edge of the \"Palouse Country\" where the rolling Palouse hills merge with the low mountains of northern Idaho. It is drained by the South Fork Palouse River, Paradise Creek, and Missouri Flat Creek, and their headwater tributaries.</p><p>All water supplies for the basin are derived from wells and springs. Virtually all large-capacity wells are owned by the City of Moscow and the University of Idaho. These wells are open to the basalt of the Columbia River Group and the interbedded sands in the Latah Formation (Stevens, 1960, p. 335; Jones and Ross, 1972, p. 12-13, fig. 4). Many domestic and a few commercial wells are also open to these same formations. Most of the City and University wells tap thick sections of these water-bearing formations. However, only about 25 percent of the total basin area is underlain by basalt. The approximate subsurface extent of the area underlain by basalt, as determined by well logs and geophysical data, is shown in figure 2.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to present basic geologic and hydrologic data that are available in the basin. Included are a table of well records, well logs, a table of annual ground-water withdrawals, water levels in observation wells, a contour map showing the approximate elevation of the water-level in the upper series of basalt flows and interbedded sediments in the southern part of the area (fig. 2), and a bibliography of the more important reports pertaining to ground water in the area. More than 90 percent of the wells tapping basalt were visited, but only a representative number of wells tapping other rocks were visited. Eleven rocks representing the total compositional sequence have been analyzed for U, Th and REE. Eight of the rocks (group 1) have positive-slope, parallel, chondrite-normalized REE fractionation patterns. Using a computer model, the major element compositions of group 1 whole rocks and observed phenocrysts were used to predict the crystallization histories of increasingly residual liquids, and allowed semi-quantitative verification of origin by fractional crystallization of the olivine-basalt parent magma. Results were combined with mineral-liquid distribution coefficient data to predict trace element abundances, and existing data on Cr, Ni, Sr and Ba were also successfully incorporated in the model. The remaining three rocks (group 2) have nonuniform positive-slope REE fractionation patterns not parallel to group 1 patterns. Rare earth fractionation in a syenite is explained by partial melting of a source rich in clinopyroxene and/or hornblende. Aluminum is complexed with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine), pH is adjusted to 8.3 to minimize interferences, and the aluminum oxinate is extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) prior to analysis by atomic absorption. To determine equilibrium species only, the contact time between sample and 8-hydroxyquinoline is minimized. The Al may be extracted at the sample site with a minimum of equipment and the MIBK extract stored for several weeks prior to atomic absorption analysis.</p><p id=\"simple-para.0015\">Data obtained from analyses of 39 natural groundwater samples indicate that filtration through a 0.1-μm pore size filter is not an adequate means of removing all insoluble and metastable Al species present, and extraction of Al immediately after collection is necessary if only dissolved and readily reactive species are to be determined. An average of 63% of the Al present in natural waters that had been filtered through 0.1-μm pore size filters was in the form of monomeric ions. The total Al concentration, which includes all forms that passed through a 0.1-μm pore size filter, ranged 2–70 μg/l. The concentration of Al in the form of monomeric ions ranged from below detection to 57 μg/l. The ESIAC system developed by the Stanford Research Institute, was used to obtain enlargements and false-color renditions of turbidity plumes. After projection on a video screen, individual turbidity features were analyzed, mapped, and photographed.</p><p>The Niagara River plume, as much as 500 square kilometres in area, is by far, the largest turbidity feature in the lake. Based on image tonal comparisons, turbidity in the Welland Canal is usually higher than that in any other watercourse discharging into the lake throughout the shipping season. Somewhat less turbid water enters the lake from the Port Dalhousie diversion channel and the Genesee River. Relatively clear water resulting from the deposition of suspended matter in numerous upstream lakes is discharged by the Niagara and Oswego rivers.</p><p>Plume analysis corroborates the presence of a prevailing eastward flowing longshore current along the entire south shore. This current is most persistent at the Oswego River outlet but is quite variable in the Rochester embayment, where rapid shifts in water movement were occasionally detected in LANDSAT images. The position of the spring thermal bar, a zone, of maximum density water corresponding to the 4°C isotherm, was approximately located in images obtained during April 1973. Although eastward moving currents were detected on the inshore side of the thermal bar, westward moving counter currents seem to be dominant along its offshore side.</p><p>Plumes generated by beach erosion were readily detected in the images. Such areas are identified by light to very light, long, narrow plumes paralleling the coastline. The studies have shown that in all but the most slowly deposited sediments pore fluids exhibit changes in composition upon burial. These changes can be grouped into a few consistent patterns that facilitate identification of the diagenetic reactions occurring in the sediments. Pelagic clays and slowly deposited (&lt;1 cm/10</span><sup>3</sup><span>yr) biogenic sediments are the only types that exhibit little evidence of reaction in the pore waters. In most biogenic sediments sea water undergoes considerable alteration. In sediments deposited at rates up to a few cm/10</span><sup>3</sup><span>&nbsp;yr the changes chiefly involve gains of Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;and Sr</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;and losses of Mg</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;which balance the Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;enrichment. The Ca-Mg substitution may often reach 30 mM/kg while Sr</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;may be enriched 15-fold over sea water. These changes reflect recrystallization of biogenic calcite and the substitution of Mg</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;for Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;during this reaction. The Ca-Mg-carbonate formed is most likely a dolomitic phase. A related but more complex pattern is found in carbonate sediments deposited at somewhat greater rates. Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;and Sr</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;enrichment is again characteristic, but Mg</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;losses exceed Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;gains with the excess being balanced by SO</span><sub>4</sub><sup>post staggered2-</sup><span>&nbsp;losses. The data indicate that the reactions are similar to those noted above, except that the Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;released is not kept in solution but is precipitated by the HCO</span><sub>3</sub><sup>post staggered-</sup><span>&nbsp;produced in SO</span><sub>4</sub><sup>post staggered2-</sup><span>&nbsp;reduction. In both these types of pore waters Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;is usually conservative, but K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;depletions are frequent. In several partly consolidated sediment sections approaching igneous basement contact, very marked interstitial calcium enrichment has been found (to 5.5 g/kg). These phenomena are marked by pronounced depletion in Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>, Si and CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>, and slight enhancement in Cl</span><sup>-</sup><span>. The changes are attributed to exchange of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;for Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;in silicate minerals forming from submarine weathering of igneous rocks such as basalts. Water is also consumed in these reactions, accounting for minor increases in total interstitial salinity. Terrigenous, organic-rich sediments deposited rapidly along continental margins also exhibit significant evidences of alteration. Microbial reactions involving organic matter lead to complete removal of SO</span><sub>4</sub><sup>post staggered2-</sup><span>, strong HCO</span><sub>3</sub><sup>post staggered-</sup><span>&nbsp;enrichment, formation of NH</span><sub>4</sub><sup>post staggered+</sup><span>, and methane synthesis from H</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;and CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;once SO</span><sub>4</sub><sup>post staggered2-</sup><span>&nbsp;is eliminated. K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and often Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(slightly) are depleted in the interstitial waters. Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;depletion may occur owing to precipitation of CaCO</span><sub>3</sub><span>.
