S. Geological Survey made seismic noise measurements in the East Mesa area of Imperial Valley, California, to find out if a noise anomaly was associated with the Mesa thermal anomaly. Thirty-three locations were occupied in the area using slow-speed tape-recording seismic systems. One of the stations (CEN) was operated close to where a geothermal test well was subsequently drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Several sources of cultural noise are present in the area. Large fluctuations in noise level, superposed on a constant high level of noise, occur from traffic on a freeway to the south of the region. There is noise generated by canals to the west and south and agricultural activity to the west of the region. Noise at 2.5 Hz frequency generated by a small waterfall (power drop) on the All American Canal propagates as far as 10 km. Average noise levels were computed at each station using several quiet samples selected from 4-hour sections of data recorded at night and contoured. Spatial distribution of 2-3 Hz noise show noise radiating from the power drop. Noise in 0-2, 3-5, and 5-10 Hz bands show high levels extending along the freeway to the south and East High Line Canal to the west of the area. The Mesa thermal anomaly is centered about 2.5 km from the freeway and canal and does not seem to have any anomalous noise amplitudes associated with it. Additional results using data from two arrays of closely-spaced instruments extending from the freeway to the Mesa thermal anomaly also show no indications of high noise levels over the anomaly. This conclusion differs from the results of two previous surveys in the area (Douze and Sorrells, 1972; Geothermal Staff of Teledyne-Geotech, 1972) which show well defined noise anomalies in the 0-2, and 3-5 Hz frequency bands. A search was also made for anomalous features in noise spectra and for coherent wave trains indicating the presence of discrete sources of noise. The only predominant feature in the spectra is the 2.5 Hz peak seen at most stations, from noise generated by the power drop. Records from several three-element, L-shaped arrays with 0.3 km instrument spacing show very little visual coherence. Measurements using a cross-spectral method, however, show that highly coherent waves are found at 0.4 and 2.5 Hz; coherence is less, though significant, at 3.4 and 4.4 Hz; direction studies using phase delays from the arrays give many non-unique solutions, as the array spacing is larger than the wavelengths involved. The study is also designed to determine the effectiveness of different erosion-control measures in reducing sediment discharges. The study area, near Enola, Pa., consists of five adjacent drainage basins, four of which will be crossed by Interstate 81. Ninety percent of the land in each of the basins is in forest or grass. Active farmland accounts for less than 10 percent, and the remainder is in roadways and buildings. The major factor affecting sediment concentrations and discharges was the construction of a one-lane roadway and a 5-acre (2 hm<sup>2</sup>) farm pond in basin 2. Upstream from the Massachusetts State line the Hoosic River drains a total of 205 mi<sup>2</sup> (531 km<sup>2</sup>) of which 164 mi<sup>2</sup> (425 km<sup>2</sup>) are in Massachusetts, 29 mi<sup>2</sup> (101 km<sup>2</sup>) are in Vermont, and 2 mi<sup>2</sup> (5 km<sup>2</sup>) are in New York. This report contains hydrologic data for that part inside Massachusetts and includes all, or parts of, the towns of Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Dalton, Florida, Hancock, Lanesborough, New Ashford, North Adams, Savoy, Williamstown, and Windsor.</p><p>The data tabulated here were collected during an investigation of the water resources of the Hoosic River basin in Massachusetts by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission. This report is released to make available to the public basic hydrologic and related information that will facilitate the planning of water-resources development and complements an interpretive report of the area (Hansen and others, 1973).</p><p>Data presented include selected information on wells, test borings, springs, seismic surveys, streamflow records, chemical analyses of surface and ground water and of rainfall, and suspended-sediment concentrations of surface water. The results are briefly summarized in the following section. The second section consists of geologic studies of four widely separated areas on Mars (figure 1) selected to provide as wide a variety of environments as possible. For each area a detailed geologic map of a high resolution Mariner 9 B-frame was made and several exemplary traverses were plotted to show how the various geologic units might be visited, sampled, and analyzed. In each area 5 to 10 geologic units appear to be accessible. A substantial fraction of each area is covered by loess-like or dune-like units or channel deposits. That is, there are extensive deposits of transported debris that may be strongly sorted by sedimentational processes. However a variety of indigenous rocks are also present in each of the areas selected. Volcanic rocks of several types and impact debris occur locally. These are masked to varying degrees by the transported debris.<br></p><p>Two additional capabilities are necessary beyond those available for Viking '75. The first is a decrease in the size of the landing ellipse so the spacecraft can be put down close to a desirable landing point. The actions undertaken to solve this problem, included the collection of data on the time of travel and dispersion characteristics of the tributaries draining the Winston-Salem area and of the main stem of the Yadkin below their confluence.</p><p>Fluorescent dye was used to simulate the movement of waterborne wastes under four different flow conditions over a reach of about 41 miles (66 kilometers) beginning at the sewage-treatment plant on Salem Creek and ending on the Yadkin River at High Rock Lake near Salisbury. Total travel time for the entire reach ranges from about 28 hours during periods of high streamflow to about 47 hours during periods of low flow. A soluble substance released as a slug at the sewage-treatment plant disperses longitudinally and laterally as it moves downstream. Longitudinal dispersion, expressed as the time required for a substance released as a slug at the sewage-treatment plant to pass a downstream point, ranges from about 8 hours at the upper end of High Rock Lake during periods of high flow to about 15 hours during periods of low flow. The rate of lateral dispersion also depends on the rate of flow of the Yadkin. During high-flow conditions wastes entering the Yadkin from Winston-Salem disperse across the river in a few miles. Under low-flow conditions lateral dispersion is still incomplete more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) downstream.</p><p>Longitudinal dispersion casues the maximum concentrations resulting from slug injections to decrease significantly as the traveltime increases. A relation is presented so the maximum concentration can be estimated at any location downstream from a point of injection at flow rates between about 80 and 500 cubic feet per second (2 and 14 cubic meters per second) at the Muddy Creek gaging station and between about 1,500 and 10,000 cubic feet per second (42 and 280 cubic meters per second) at the Yadkin College gaging station.</p><p>Water entering the Yadkin River from Muddy Creek during low-flow periods does not completely disperse laterally for more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) below the confluence, but, when the Yadkin River discharge is above 5,000 cubic feet per second (140 cubic meters per second), lateral mixing is complete within a few miles below the confluence.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. Fresh water, which is defined as containing 250 milligrams per liter chloride or less, in the Chicot aquifer is characteristically hard and high in iron concentration; in this area the hardness is generally 200-300 milligrams per liter. The soft-water zone, containing water with a hardness of less than 60 milligrams per liter, is anomalous and occurs in an area where the basal part of the aquifer is separated from the main body of the aquifer by a thick clay layer. The zone has been mapped in parts of St. Martin and adjoining Lafayette Parishes.\r\n\r\nAlthough the exact areal extent of the zone cannot be determined with available data, it appears to be sufficiently large that the soft water should prove to be an important asset to the area. The water could be used by itself or mixed with either hard or slightly salty water (more than 250 milligrams per liter chloride) to provide a blend that would require little or no treatment for most purposes. Because of the proximity of salty water in much of the area, careful planning and monitoring will be necessary to maintain the soft-water zone as a dependable supply of usable water. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of T.R. Cummings, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Michigan. </p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States\". Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Michigan are contained in Part 4 of that series. </p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. More detailed studies of problem areas may be required in the future, as water needs and related development increase.</span></p>\n<p><span>The upper Wisconsin River basin is the headwaters of the Wisconsin River drainage and includes about 2,730 square miles in northern Wisconsin (upstream from the gage on the Wisconsin River at Merrill). An additional 50 square miles of the basin lies in Michigan and is not covered by this report. The report area includes parts of Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Oneida, Price, Taylor, and Vilas Counties,</span></p>\n<p><span>Many organizations and persons assisted the study by providing data. The U.S. Geological Survey rainfall-runoff model was calibrated for six small watersheds in Oklahoma. Calibration results, discussed in this report, indicate that the rainfall-runoff model can be used to extend the length of flood records for small watersheds in Oklahoma. Records from four small watersheds were extended by the model and synthetic frequency curves were computed for these sites to show applicability of the model. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly or less frequently. At some sites water-temperature data were recorded on charts by recorders. Data are given for 133 sampling stations of which 116 are continuous-record stations and 17 are miscellaneous sites. Chemical analyses are also given for 68 ground-water sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in figure 1 and locations of ground-water sites are shown in figure 2. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U. S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Wyoming. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U. S. Geological Survey under the direction of Robert L. Cushman, district chief. Wyoming district personnel who contributed significantly to the collection and preparation of data included in this report were: E. R. Cox, S. A. Druse, W. G. Hodson, M. E. Lowry, D. J. O'Connell, G. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.
