Most of the rest has come from ore deposited in the Deadwood Formation (Cambrian) by hydrothermal replacement during early Tertiary igneous activity. About 99 percent of the total production has been within a radius of 5 miles (8 km) of Lead. Elsewhere, prospecting has been intense, both in the Precambrian rocks, which are exposed over an area 61 by 26 miles (98 by 42 km), and in nearby Paleozoic rocks. \r\n\r\nAll the known ore bodies have been found either at the surface or in subsurface workings of operating mines. Efforts to find totally new deposits have been modest and sporadic; no comprehensive and systematic program has ever been attempted. \r\n\r\nObviously, any exploration program should be aimed at finding a new deposit resembling the Homestake in the Precambrian, but discovery in the Deadwood of a new group of ore bodies containing several hundred thousand ounces of gold would certainly be worthwhile. \r\n\r\nEvidence has long been available that the Deadwood deposits and the Homestake deposit are somehow related. Current opinion is that (1) the Homestake ore is mainly Precambrian, (2) a trivial amount of Homestake ore is Tertiary, (3)gold in Deadwood basal conglomerate is largely of placer origin, and (4) the gold of replacement deposits in the Deadwood and in other rock units came originally from sources similar to the Homestake deposit or its parent materials. \r\n\r\nHomestake ore is virtually entirely contained in a unit of iron-formation locally known as the Homestake Formation, which seemingly had more gold in the original sediments than similar rocks exposed elsewhere in the Black Hills. Gold, sulfur, and other constituents were subsequently concentrated in ore shoots in zones of dilation caused by cross folds that deformed earlier major folds. These ore shoots are in metamorphic rocks of a grade just above the garnet isograd, in a zone where the principal iron-magnesium mineral of the iron-formation changes from a carbonate (sideroplesite) to a silicate (cummingtonite). This metamorphic reaction would release carbon dioxide to the fluid that presumably formed the ore bodies. \r\n\r\nIn short, three controls over localization of the ore have been identified: (1) the cross folds; (2) the so-called Homestake Formation, which passes beneath Paleozoic rocks north of Lead and has not been proved to reappear anywhere else in the Black Hills (Other units of iron-formation less enriched in gold might locally become more like the Homestake Formation beneath the cover of Paleozoic rocks.}; (3} proximity to the garnet isograd--nearly all the exposed Precambrian rocks in the Black Hills are at a metamorphic grade higher than this isograd--and occurrence of this isograd zone mostly beneath Paleozoic rocks. \r\n\r\nIn searching for new deposits, one can guess from existing data where Precambrian rocks of suitable nature may be concealed. The usefulness of such guesses can be increased if they are made with information about the distribution of gold in younger rocks. Gold in the Deadwood basal conglomerate would be the simplest indicator of a deposit once exposed on the pre-Deadwood surface. Tertiary replacement deposits in the Deadwood or other rocks, which obtained their gold from Precambrian sources that may be nearby or far away, can also be helpful; they, like anomalies found by geochemical sampling, at least outline the regions of mineralizing activity. \r\n\r\nA suitable approach to exploration is to make a thorough study of the stratigraphy, the structure, and the metals geochemistry of the Deadwood Formation and associated rocks, chiefly in the northern Black Hills but to a lesser extent elsewhere in localities where the Precambrian geology seems promising and where gold has been found nearby. The portion considered in this report is the area from the Yukon River south to Isabel Pass in the Alaska Range. \r\n\r\nThe occurrences of aufeis gave the appearance of four rather distinct modes of formation. In the area south of Big Delta, the icings occurred as seepage at the toes of the terraces and along the bottoms of the stream channels cutting into the terraces. In the Yukon-Tanana uplands, the icings occurred generally as seepage at the lowest points in the U-shaped valleys and along the surfaces of the streams in the tributary valleys incised into the rolling hills. The icings formed in the stream channels in both regions have similar hydraulic considerations as do the icings formed in the lower part of the valleys at the toes of the terraces. \r\n\r\nAerial techniques of collecting data by photography and thermal imagery were tested in this setting as a basis for consideration in planning for potential environmental monitoring of the pipeline.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77643","usgsCitation":"Skibitzke, H.E., 1974, Some aspects of remote sensing for consideration in planning for environmental monitoring of the Alyeska Pipeline, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-643, 32 leaves, 11 fold. ill. :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (33 p., 9 sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77643.","productDescription":"32 leaves, 11 fold. ill. :ill., maps ;28 cm.; (33 p., 9 sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144517,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38951,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38952,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38953,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38954,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38955,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38946,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38947,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38948,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38949,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38950,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0643/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e9e4b07f02db5e94c6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Skibitzke, Herbert E.","contributorId":32142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Skibitzke","given":"Herbert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162687,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In Rhode Island, all or parts of the suburban towns of Cumberland, Lincoln, North Smithfield, and Smithfield and all or parts of the cities of Central Falls, East Povidence, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket are within the study area. Also included are parts of the towns Attleboro and North Attleborough in Massachusetts. In 1970, total population was about 240,000, which was equivalent to about one-fourth of the total population of Rhode Island. Fresh water usage in 1970 by public-supply systems and self-supplied industry was about 33 mgd (million gallons per day), which was equal to 22 percent of total fresh water use in Rhode Island for all purposes except generation of electric power (fig. 2). Anticipated increases in population and per capita water requirements are likely to cause the demand for water to more than double within the next 50 years. A significant part of this demand can be met from wells that tap the principal streams. This aquifer yielded an average of 10 mgd in 1970 and is capable of sustaining a much higher yield. The primary objectives of the study were to determine and map the saturated thickness and transmissivity of the stratified-drift aquifer and to assess the potential sustained yield of those parts of the aquifer favorable for large-scale development of water. A secondary objective was to describe ground-water quality and to evaluate the impact of induced infiltration of polluted stream water on the quality of native ground water. This report is based on analysis of drillers' records of more than 700 wells and borings which include 462 lithologic logs; 35 specific-capacity determinations; 12 aquifer tests, including detailed tests at two sites to determine streambed infiltration rates; chemical analyses of 92 ground-water and 15 stream-water samples; and geologic mapping. Selected base data are published in a separate (Johnston and Dickerman, in press). The authors are indebted to well drillers, especially American Drilling and Boring Company, R.E. Chapman Company, and Layne New England Company, for making their records available; to the water departments of the towns of Cumberland and Lincoln, for allowing aquifer tests of their well fields; to the Rhode Island Department of Health, for providing data on water quality and use; and to many other federal, state, and municipal agencies, companies, and individuals who supplied information. Their contributions are gratefully acknowledged.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri744","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Rhode Island Water Resources Board","usgsCitation":"Johnston, H.E., and Dickerman, D.C., 1974, Availability of ground water in the Blackstone River area Rhode Island and Massachusetts: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 74-4, 2 Plates: 41.74 x 50.88 and 41.40 x 50.46 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri744.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 41.74 x 50.88 and 41.40 x 50.46 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158655,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0004/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":279495,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0004/plate-2.pdf"},{"id":279494,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0004/plate-1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts;Rhode Island","otherGeospatial":"Blackstone River Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -71.566667,41.75 ], [ -71.566667,42.0 ], [ -71.333333,42.0 ], [ -71.333333,41.75 ], [ -71.566667,41.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ee4b07f02db660474","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnston, Herbert E.","contributorId":16392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnston","given":"Herbert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dickerman, David C.","contributorId":41047,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dickerman","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The major objectives of the study were to (1) catalog basic physical data on the recharge basins in use on Long Island, (2) measure quality and quantity of precipitation and inflow, (3) measure infiltration rates at selected recharge basins, and (4) evaluate regional effects of recharge basins on the hydrologic system of Long Island. The area of study consists of Nassau and Suffolk Counties -- about 1,370 square miles -- in eastern Long Island, N.Y. \r\n\r\nRecharge basins, numbering more than 2,100 on Long Island in 1969, are open pits in moderately to highly permeable sand and gravel deposits. These pits are used to dispose of storm runoff from residential, industrial, and commercial areas, and from highways, by infiltration of the water through the bottom and sides of the basins. \r\n\r\nThe hydrology of three recharge basins on Long Island -- Westbury, Syosset, and Deer Park basins -- was studied. The precipitation-inflow relation showed that the average percentages of precipitation flowing into each basin were roughly equivalent to the average percentages of impervious areas in the total drainage areas of the basins. Average percentages of precipitation flowing into the basins as direct runoff were 12 percent at the Westbury basin, 10 percent at the Syosset basin, and 7 percent at the Deer Park basin. Numerous open-bottomed storm-water catch basins at Syosset and Deer Park reduced the proportion of inflow to those basins, as compared with the Westbury basin, which has only a few open-bottomed catch basins. \r\n\r\nInflow hydrographs for each basin typify the usual urban runoff hydrograph -- steeply rising and falling limbs, sharp peaks, and short time bases. Unit hydrographs for the Westbury and the Syosset basins are not expected to change; however, the unit hydrograph for the Deer Park basin is expected to broaden somewhat as a result of additional future house construction within the drainage area. \r\n\r\nInfiltration rates averaged 0.9 fph (feet per hour) for 63 storms between July 1967 and May 1970 at the Westbury recharge basin, 0.8 fph for 22 storms from July 1969 to September 1970 at the Syosset recharge basin, and 0.2 fph for 24 storms from March to September 1970 at the Deer Park recharge basin. Low infiltration rates at Deer Park resulted mainly from (1) a high percentage of eroded silt, clay, and organic debris washed in from construction sites in the drainage area, which partly filled the interstices of the natural deposits, and (2) a lack of a well-developed plant-root system on the floor of the younger basin, which would have kept the soil zone more permeable. \r\n\r\nThe apparent rate of movement of storm water through the unsaturated zone below each basin averaged 5.5 fph at Westbury, 3.7 fph at Syosset, and 3.1 fph at Deer Park. The rates of movement for storms during the warm months (April through October) were slightly higher than average, probably because the recharging water was warmer than it was during the rest of the year, and therefore, was slightly less viscous.\r\n\r\nOn the average, a 1-inch rainfall resulted in a peak rise of the water table directly below each basin of 0.5 foot; a 2-inch rainfall resulted in a peak rise of about 2 feet. The mound commonly dissipated within 1 to 4 days at Westbury, 7 days to more than 15 days at Syosset, and 1 to 3 days at Deer Park, depending on the magnitude of the peak buildup. \r\n\r\nAverage annual ground-water recharge was estimated to be 6.4 acre-feet at the Westbury recharge basin, 10.3 acre-feet at the Syosset recharge basin, and 29.6 acre-feet at the Deer Park recharge basin. \r\n\r\nChemical composition of precipitation at Westbury, Syosset, and Deer Park drainage areas was similar: ","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The zone is a few hundred to as much as 500 feet thick. Where lignite beds lie within 1,000 feet of the surface, this zone underlies an area about 30 miles wide by about 75 miles long, stretching from just northeast of Denver to several miles south of Calhan. Fifteen mines were operated at various periods between 1874 and 1940 and probably produced a total of less than 100,000 tons of lignite, mostly for local use. \r\n\r\nFrom 1874 to 1974, several geologists have reported on this lignite zone or the enclosing beds, but no detailed reports have been written except for one by this writer. Drill holes are the main source of geologic data, owing to poor exposure. \r\n\r\nThere are generally about 3 to 6 lignite beds, and they are mostly about 15 or 20 to a few tens of feet apart. Most or all beds typically contain numerous non-coal partings from a fraction of an inch to several inches thick, so that thickness of lignite beds should be stated as gross thickness and as net lignite thickness; net lignite thickness is generally from 70 to 90 percent of gross thickness. Many partings are composed of kaolin, but others are composed of other clay minerals, siltstone, and sandstone. The lignite beds range generally from 1 or 2 to several feet thick, and some are as much as 10-25 feet thick; the thickest known bed has a maximum thickness of 54.5 feet, with a net lignite thickness of 40 feet. Most lignite beds seem to have fair lateral continuity, and at least some beds are several miles in extent. The thickest known lignite bed was traced for at least 18 miles, from northwest to southeast of Watkins. \r\n\r\nThe lignite is brownish-black to black, weathers, checks, and disintegrates rapidly, and even in drill cores from a few hundred feet in depth the lignite is easily broken by hand pressure. Quality of the lignite is lowered by the non-coal partings and, locally at least, by some small blebs and balls of clay in the lignite itself, especially at the base. Available analyses indicate that the following general figures, on an as-received basis, may be applied to relatively clean lignite from this zone: 6,000-7,000 Btu, 20-35 percent moisture, 8-18 percent ash, and 0.3-0.5 percent sulfur. Rank of the lignite is lignite A as calculated by the formulas of the American Society for Testing and . Materials (ASTM), although some parts, especially of deeper beds, may be as high as subbituminous C coal in rank. \r\n\r\nBest utilization of the lignite probably would be by gasification, liquefaction, or similar methods, because of the numerous non-coal partings and low quality. \r\n\r\nThe thickest known lignite bed is estimated to contain at least 1.25 billion short tons of lignite. Two methods of roughly estimating the order of magnitude of lignite resources, in beds at least 4 feet thick and within 1,000 feet of the surface in this zone, indicate resources are on the order of 20 billion tons.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7427","usgsCitation":"Soister, P.E., 1974, A preliminary report on a zone containing thick lignite beds, Denver Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-27, Report: ii, 62 p.;  2 Plates: 32.69 × 32.40 inches and 22.90 × 7.88 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7427.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 62 p.;  2 Plates: 32.69 × 32.40 inches and 22.90 × 7.88 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":388379,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15046.htm"},{"id":44998,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0027/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44997,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0027/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44996,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0027/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":150346,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0027/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Denver basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -105.27099609375,\n              38.950865400919994\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.2657470703125,\n              38.950865400919994\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.2657470703125,\n              40.26695230509778\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.27099609375,\n              40.26695230509778\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.27099609375,\n              38.950865400919994\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ee4b07f02db6aaa12","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soister, Paul E.","contributorId":92234,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soister","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172178,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The geologic data have now been captured digitally and are presented here along with images of the printed map sheets. The map encompasses the area of four 7.5-minute quadrangles between 39º15' and 39º 30'N and 106º15' and 106º30'W in the Sawatch and Gore mountain ranges, and upper part of the Arkansas River drainage in central Colorado. The Holy Cross geologic map depicts in detail the complex geology at the north end of the Sawatch Range on the west at its junction with south end of the Gore Range on the east. The ranges are separated in the southern part of the map area by the upper reaches of the Arkansas River, and in the northeast part by the narrow valley of the upper Eagle River.  Sixty map units and numerous individual beds and thin units within the principal map units are shown. Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic metamorphic rocks are the principal rocks of the Sawatch Range. In the Gore Range, lower and upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks rest unconformably on the Precambrian metamorphic rocks. Paleozoic rocks that range in age from Upper Cambrian though Middle Pennsylvanian support the Gore Range along the eastern quarter of the map. The sequence includes a basal quartzite overlain by interbedded, shale, dolomite, quartzite, and sandstone. The Leadville Dolomite, below the dark shale, is the host rock for the ore deposits at Leadville and the neighboring lead-zinc-silver districts. A wide range of Miocene to Cretaceous intrusive rocks dip east off the Sawatch Range. The Dry Union Formation of Pliocene and Miocene age fills the valley of the Arkansas River and is covered by Quaternary alluvium and glacial sediment. Glacial deposits of Bull Lake, Pinedale, and neoglacial age are present in many of the mountain valleys.  The geologic structure of the quadrangle is complex in geometry and time with a distinct structural and geographic break along the west front of the Gore Range in the eastern quarter of the quadrangle. In general, Paleozoic strata intruded by Tertiary and Cretaceous irregular linear plutons and sills of the Gore Range are tilted east from the Sawatch Range. These rocks are broken by major normal faults in a complex pattern commonly associated with Paleocene? and Cretaceous intrusive porphyries. In the Sawatch Range, two large Precambrian igneous complexes are separated by a broad shear zone of Precambrian age that extends northwest across the quadrangle and beneath Paleozoic rocks of the Gore Range. Down-to-valley normal faults define the margins of the Arkansas and upper Eagle River valleys.  The Leadville, Sugarloaf, and St. Kevin districts have produced significant amounts of silver. The Homestake mine at the head of West Tennessee Creek produced silver and lead from veins bearing siderite and barite. Scattered veins in shear zones along Homestake Creek are mainly argentiferous galena veins; some are quartz and copper. Veins at Holy Cross City produced gold. Other veins in the area have produced gold, silver, and minor amounts of copper.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/i830","usgsCitation":"Tweto, O., and Brandt, T., 1974, Geologic map and sections of the Holy Cross quadrangle, Eagle, Lake, Pitkin, and Summit Counties, Colorado (Originally posted in 1974; Digital edition July 19, 2013): U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 830, Report: 9 p.; 1 Plate: 36.00 x 50.05; Downloads Directory, https://doi.org/10.3133/i830.","productDescription":"Report: 9 p.; 1 Plate: 36.00 x 50.05; Downloads Directory","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":189301,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/i830.gif"},{"id":398599,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9660.htm"},{"id":275187,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/830/downloads/I-830_map.pdf"},{"id":275186,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/830/"},{"id":275188,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/830/downloads/I-830textonly_508.pdf"},{"id":275189,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/830/downloads/"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Eagle County. An experimental study to test the feasibility of preparing such a map and its usefulness in evaluating earthquake hazards was initiated jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and the former Seismology Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; financial support was provided by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. It was hoped that the study would develop evidence for the existence of tectonic regions or structural provinces that are useful in defining parameters of seismic hazard in relation to engineered structures. As with many experiments, this one did not produce the results envisioned at the outset, but it did result, we think, in assembling seismic and structural data useful in evaluating the distribution and origin of earthquakes in the eastern part of the United States and in delimiting areas of relative seismic activity.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf620","isbn":"060780047X","usgsCitation":"Hadley, J.B., and Devine, J.F., 1974, Seismotectonic map of the Eastern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 620, 4 Sheets: 25.49 x 32.39 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf620.","productDescription":"4 Sheets: 25.49 x 32.39 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":360488,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0620/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":360486,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0620/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":360487,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0620/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":360489,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0620/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":185426,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/0620/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -96,25 ], [ -96,49 ], [ -64,49 ], [ -64,25 ], [ -96,25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4e01","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hadley, Jarvis B.","contributorId":24346,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hadley","given":"Jarvis","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":262347,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Devine, James F. jdevine@usgs.gov","contributorId":4615,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Devine","given":"James","email":"jdevine@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":262348,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Because of urban encroachment onto gravel-bearing lands, this basic construction material is in short supply nationally and in the Front Range Urban Corridor. Longer hauls, increased prices, and use of alternatives, especially crushed rock aggregate, have resulted. An analysis of possible sequential land uses following gravel mining indicates that a desirable use is for 'real estate' ponds and small lakes. \r\n\r\nA method for computing gravel reserves, based on planimeter measurement of area of resource-bearing lands and statistical analysis of reliability of thickness and size distribution data, was developed to compute reserves in individual markets. Department of State, Liberia was mapped by geologic and geophysical methods during the period 1965 to 1972. The resulting geologic and geophysical maps are published in ten folios, each covering one quadrangle (see index map). The first systematic mapping in the Harper quadrangle was by Baker, S. P. Srivastava, and W. E. Stewart (LGS) at a scale of 1:500,000 in the vicinity of Harper in the southeastern, and of Karloke in the northeastern part of the quadrangle in 1960-61. Brock and Chidester carried out systematic mapping of the quadrangle at a scale of 1:250,000 in the period September 1971-May 1972; the geologic map was compiled from field data gathered by project geologists and private companies as indicated in the source diagram, photogeologic maps, interpretation of airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys, field mapping, and ground-based radiometric surveys in which hand-held scintillators were used. R. W. Bromery, C. S. Wotorson, and J. C. Behrendt contributed to the interpretation of geophysical data. Total-intensity aeromagnetic and total-count gamma radiation maps (Behrendt and Wotorson, in press a, b), and unpublished data derived from those maps, including the near-surface and the regional magnetic components and aeromagnetic/radiometric correlations, were used in the interpretation. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74310","usgsCitation":"Brock, M.R., Chidester, A., and Baker, M., 1974, Geology of the Harper Quadrangle, Liberia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-310, Report: 12 p.; 1 Plate: 41.72 x 27.52 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74310.","productDescription":"Report: 12 p.; 1 Plate: 41.72 x 27.52 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144792,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0310/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":350586,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0310/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":350587,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0310/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"Liberia","otherGeospatial":"Harper Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -9.1,\n              4\n            ],\n            [\n              -7.5,\n              4\n            ],\n            [\n              -7.5,\n              5\n            ],\n            [\n              -9.1,\n              5\n            ],\n            [\n              -9.1,\n              4\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db67ffe8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brock, M. Of the 2,124 recharge basins on Long Island in 1969, approximately 9 percent (194) contain water 5 or more days after a 1-inch rainfall. Basins on Long Island contain water because (1) they intersect the regional water table or a perched water table, (2) they are excavated in material of low hydraulic conductivity, (3) layers of sediment and debris of low hydraulic conductivity accumulate on the basin floor, or (4) a combination of these factors exists. \r\n\r\nData obtained as part of this study show that (1) 22 basins contain water because they intersect the regional water table, (2) a larger percentage of the basins excavated in the Harbor Hill and the Ronkonkoma morainal deposits contain water than basins excavated in the outwash deposits, (3) a larger percentage of the basins that drain industrial and commercial areas contain water than basins that drain highways and residential areas, (4) storm runoff from commercial and industrial areas and highway: generally contains high concentrations of asphalt, grease, oil, tar, and rubber particles, whereas runoff from residential areas mainly contains leaves, grass cuttings, and other plant material, and (5) differences in composition of the soils within the drainage areas of the basins on Long Island apparently are not major factors in causing water retention. \r\n\r\nWater-containing basins dispose of an undetermined amount of storm runoff primarily by the slow infiltration of water through the bottoms and the sides of the basins. The low average specific conductance of water in most such basins suggests that evaporation does not significantly concentrate the chemical constituents and, therefore, that evaporation is not a major mechanism of water disposal from these basins.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly or less frequently. At some sites water-temperature data were recorded on charts by recorders. Data are given for 133 sampling stations of which 116 are continuous-record stations and 17 are miscellaneous sites. Chemical analyses are also given for 68 ground-water sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in figure 1 and locations of ground-water sites are shown in figure 2. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U. S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Wyoming. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U. S. Geological Survey under the direction of Robert L. Cushman, district chief. Wyoming district personnel who contributed significantly to the collection and preparation of data included in this report were: E. R. Cox, S. A. Druse, W. G. Hodson, M. E. Lowry, D. J. O'Connell, G. W. Armentrout, Jr., M. A. Crist, B. H. Ringen, W. B. Borchert, W. R. Glass, G. C. Lines, H. B. Fabricius, P. B. McCollam, C. E. Obert, K. G. Polinoski, T. W. Custis, R. L. Muench, J. 0. Ragsdale, M. Kyner.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, water temperatures, and sediment since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Water of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year. These records will be published later in Geological Survey water-supply papers.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wdrWY732","collaboration":"Prepared in S. Geological Survey (USGS), under the sponsorship of the Government of Liberia and the Agency for Inter-national Development, U. S. Department of State, Liberia was mapped by geologic and geophysical methods during the period 1965 to 1972. The resulting geologic and geophysical maps are published in ten folios, each covering one quadrangle (see index map). Systematic map synthesis by Force began in 1971 and included field data as shown on figure 1. Observations but not interpretations made by Offerberg and Tremaine (1961) were incorporated in the mapping. The area compiled by Berge (fig. 1) is the LAMCO (Liberian American-Swedish Minerals Co.) Nimba Concession Area. Mapping has been done by company geologists since 1955 and summarized by Berge (1966, 1968, 1973, 1974). Detailed mapping has been done in many areas underlain by iron deposits, but the concession area as a whole has been mapped only by reconnaissance methods. For both compilers, photogeologic mapping and the interpretation of air-borne magnetic and radiometric surveys (Behrendt and Wotorson, 1974, a and b) are integral to the interpretation as shown.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74304","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Liberian Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Force, E.R., and Berge, J., 1974, Geology of the Sanokole Quadrangle, Liberia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-304, Report: 17 p.; 1 Plate: 35.55 x 24.59 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74304.","productDescription":"Report: 17 p.; 1 Plate: 35.55 x 24.59 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147273,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0304/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":425963,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0304/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425961,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0304/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"Liberia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 8,7 ], [ 8,8 ], [ 9,8 ], [ 9,7 ], [ 8,7 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e62d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Force, Eric R.","contributorId":32916,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Force","given":"Eric","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Berge, J.W.","contributorId":12496,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berge","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168158,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
