Three of the four stations had sufficient available record for assessing changes in constituent relations with time. The records for each long-term station were subdivided into segments of approximately 5 years each. Plots and regression equations were derived for each record segment to show the relations of each major constituent value to levels of specific conductance and stream discharge. At only one stations, Boise River at Notus, was there was an apparent significant change in chemical characteristics with time. Between 1940 and 1951, the percentages of chloride and sulfate in solution at this station declined appreciably and were largely replaced by bicarbonate.  In general, there were highly significant correlations between the major inorganic ions and specific conductance, although those observed at Bear River at Border were distinctly poorer than those observed for the other stations. Corresponding correlations between the major ions and discharge were almost always less significant than those observed between the same ions and specific conductance. The common ion-discharge relations observed on the Snake River near Heise were more highly correlated before 1957 than thereafter--probably because of changes induced by the construction of Palisades Dam. However, enough data have been collected to determine that rainfall within the valley shows extreme areal variations from one storm to another. An initial run on the U.S. Geological Survey small watershed model indicates some differences in basin characteristics in the two upper subregions. Results of model studies to date are encouraging. Flood routing with the Corps of Engineers' HEC-1 flood hydrograph package seems to be feasible. By preliminary estimates, the 50-year flood at gage 2282 would probably be between 5,500 and 6,000 cubic feet per second. </span></p><p><span>The narrow, steep nature of Moanalua Valley results in very rapid concentration of runoff, with extremely sharp hydrograph peaks. Stream channel width ranges from about 20 feet in the headwaters to 35 feet near the downstream limit of the study area. Mean slope of the main stem is about 0.027 foot/foot.1/ Where not identified, units for slope are ft/ft.</span></p><p><span>Observations indicate that the stream transports very large </span><span>particles (in excess of 2 </span><span>feet </span><span>in diameter) quite frequently. Detached </span><span>fragments from old stone-arch bridges have been marked in the channel </span><span>fill for use as tracers.</span></p><p><span>Only one storm has been analyzed for suspended-sediment discharge, but rough calculations indicate a possible suspended-sediment load of 12,000 tons for a storm similar to the design flow at gage 2282. Photographic reproductions of the pictures were generated from the magnetic tapes and mosaicked by the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Primary horizontal control points, where available, controlled the placement of pictures. Where these points were not available, picture placement was controlled by spacecraft tracking data and by matching images in overlap zones between pictures. The Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of JPL processed the digital pictures to remove image artifacts and geometric distortions, to enhance high-frequency topographic detail while subduing low-frequency albedo variation, and to transform the pictures to a Mercator projection. The U.S. Geological Survey performed further artifact removal and modified contrast and tone of each picture analytically on the digital magnetic tapes provided by IPL for uniformity of tone and contrast within the mosaic. Individual analytical adjustment of pictures was not performed. Standard deviation of image placement discrepancy is less than 5 km. The projection is based on a theoretical dynamical ellipticity of 1/192. Map zones are established on the basis of recent detailed\ngeologic mapping. Liquefaction potential for each zone is estimated\nfrom an analysis of lithologic, water-table and standard penetration\ntest data. Due to empirical aspects of the evaluation method,\napproximations in establishing parameters and the generalizations of\nlimited test data to entire map zones, the liquefaction potential map\nmust be considered as~preliminary and approximate. Nevertheless, the\nmap should serve the intended purpose of generally delineating areas\nwhere the probability for liquefaction during a major earthquake is\ngreatest and, hence, areas where special attention should be given\nto the possibility of liquefaction.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Sediments with the highest potential for liquefaction are clean\ngranular layers within the younger bay sediments. These layers are not\neverywhere present but commonly occur locally near present and former\nstream channels. Clean granular beds and layers immediately beneath the\nyounger bay sediments generally have a lesser but significant potential\nfor liquefaction. Younger (Holocene) alluvial deposits have an even\nlower potential, however, the potential can be locally high in recent\nchannel and overbank deposits. Part of the Holocene unit is normally\nabove water-table and thus would have only a seasonal potential for\nliquefaction. Older (Pleistocene) alluvial fan deposits have a\ngenerally low liquefaction potential. Lateral spreading landslides are\ncommonly associated with liquefaction beneath gentle slopes. Photographic reproductions of the images were generated from the IPL digital magnetic tapes and mosaicked by the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Relative horizontal placement of pictures is controlled by spacecraft tracking data, with adjustment to fit the Mariner 9 control net of August, 1972 (Davies, M.E., 1972, Mariner 9 control net of Mars: August, 1972: Rand Corp., R-1 122- JPL) where possible. Individual analytical adjustment of pictures was not performed. Triangles are shown at the correct latitude and longitude of the control points identified and numbered by Davies (ibid.). Computer processing was performed by the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Processing included contrast enhancement and high-pass filtering which accentuates topographic features while subduing albedo variations. Photographic reproductions of the images were generated from the IPL digital magnetic tapes and mosaicked by the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Horizontal controls were derived from spacecraft tracking data, which are based on astronomical definitions of the spin axis and system of longitudes in use during the Mariner 9 mission. The projection is based on a theoretical dynamical ellipticity of 1/192. The scale is based on an equatorial radius of 3393.4 km. The study is an application of surveying, hydrology, and hydraulics to determine flood insurance premium rates. Much of the surveying needed can be done by private firms, either by ground methods or photogrammetry. Contracts are needed to let large surveys but purchase orders can be used for small ones. Photogrammetric stereo models, digital regression models, and step-backwater models are needed for most studies.
