The digitizer (basically an X-Y plotter in reverse) converts maps into digital form by describing each habitat unit as a polygon that closely approximates the actual shape of the unit. The coordinates of each polygon are then stored on magnetic tape. Habitat classification data and other information are coded and combined with the proper polygon coordinates. This results in one file containing all habitat data. A computer program with inputs of tracking data and habitat data provides a listing of the habitat used by the animals studied. These dimensions have a scale similar to those in Hele-Shaw models. Both logical and mathematical evidence indicate laminar ground-water flow, except close to pumping wells. The Theis nonequilibrium formula may be used to analyze aquifer-test data and to calculate significant values for transmissivity and storage. The Navier-Stokes equation and the Darcy equation for steady-state conditions may be used to estimate cavity dimensions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"The Groundwater The river was in flood, and the ERTS data provided the first opportunity for regional synoptic mapping of the extent of flooding at the time the imagery was obtained along a 1200 river-mile reach and some of its tributaries. The flood data were compared with imagery collected by ERTS on October 1 and 2, 1972, when the rivers were confined to their normal channels. The specially processed data were analyzed by additive-color techniques, and special enhancements were prepared to aid in interpretation of the data. The extent of flooding was delineated by additive-color, temporal composites of MSS band 7 infrared images. The temporal composites vividly depict, on a single scene, the flooded areas in relation to the normal channel. Color composites of the two near-infrared bands, which usually accentuate surface water, were enlarged to a scale of 1:250,000. Excellent registration was obtained between the image and transparencies of the 1:250,000 topographic maps used as overlays. Nine (5 percent) of the marked birds were recovered from 3 days to 9 months after release, and an additional 15 birds provided sight records. Many released birds apparently became integrated into the wild population; all of those observed were with wild flocks. Six birds were recovered over 50 miles from the release sites. Four released in late July to mid-September had moved eastward and two went southward in September or later. Five were still in the Texas-Louisiana rice belt (three in late November). Fluorite occurs as a primary mineral in phases of the composite sodic granite stock at Jamestown and in breccia zones, stockworks, and pipe-shaped bodies in and adjacent to the stock. Gold and telluride mineralization occurs with and without fluorite in veins peripheral to the stock. A great variety of fluid-inclusion types is present in the district, reflecting chemically and physically diverse fluids. Fluid inclusions in early-stage quartz from the fluorspar deposits have filling temperatures of 250 degrees to 375 degrees C, salinities of 20 to 30%, and boiling is indicated at many locations. Most inclusions associated with the main fluorite stage have salinities of at least 26% to more than 50% and filling temperatures in the range of 250 degrees to 350 degrees C. Probable cognate fluorite on the inclusion walls and as many as ten daughter minerals precipitated from some primary inclusions in fluorite attest to the presence of salt and CaF&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;-rich polycomponent fluorspar-depositing fluids. Carbon dioxide-rich liquids and vapors were present during and after the main period of fluorspar deposition.</span></p><p><span>Gold-bearing veins contain fluid inclusions indicating that two fundamentally different types of fluids were present. Inclusions in pregold quartz and fluorite have filling temperatures which range up to 375 degrees C, and most have very high salinities comparable to those from the fluorspar deposits, suggesting that early quartz and fluorite of the gold-bearing veins was roughly contemporaneous with the main period of fluorspar deposition. Fluid inclusion and other thermometric data (Kelly and Goddard, 1969) suggest that gold and telluride deposition occurred at temperatures below 300 degrees C. Fluid inclusions most directly associated with gold deposition have filling temperatures in the range 205 degrees to 270 degrees C and have about 4% salinity. These data suggest that the gold-bearing fluids either evolved from the fluorite-bearing fluids or were later unrelated hydrothermal pulses introduced on reopened structures.</span></p><p><span>Boiling occurred at many locations that were at relatively high elevations or adjacent to the sodic granite stock. From the interpretation that boiling occurred and from the heterogeneity of CO&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;contents, we deduce that fluid pressures were low and variable, commonly near 150 bars, but ranging to as much as approximately 500 bars when CO&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;pressures were high; these determinations are compatible with the depth of cover estimated from geomorphic reconstruction using the Flattop peneplain. In this paper we present tabulations of basement ages and depths from DSDP Legs 5, 8, 9, and 16 in the eastern equatorial Pacific, refer them to the latest biostratigraphic time scale, and document and discuss their error limits. We recommend that in future use of this type of data a similar practice be adopted and that the precise source of data, time scale used, and procedures for determining ages and errors be clearly identified in order to avoid confusion. Based on the data presented here, we also give the relations between basement age, distance from the spreading center, and basement depth. Spinel lherzolite xenoliths and megacrysts of augite and andesine have been found in lava flows and cinder deposits. Using analytical data on the rocks and minerals and simple thermodynamic expressions, the pressures and temperatures of equilibration of lavas and xenoliths, megacrysts and phenocrysts have been calculated. The lavas could have been in equilibrium with lherzolite at 1 330–1 410° C and 27.5–31.6 kb, the more silica-poor liquid having the higher values. The basanitoid could have equilibrated with the megacrysts at about 10.5 kb and with phenocrysts at about 1.4 kb and 1130° C. The variation in composition of the lavas may be explained by a rising zone of melting within the mantle, the most silica-poor liquid having the deepest source. Such models are used to demonstrate&nbsp;the effects of transport mechanisms that influence the dynamic&nbsp;behavior and the shape of the transition zone. The techniques&nbsp;employed in obtaining in-place measurements of solute concentrations&nbsp;are generally the stumbling block in generating data for two-dimensional&nbsp;dispersion systems. Two in-place measurement techniques&nbsp;were used in the studies described: (1) conductivity probes when salt&nbsp;was used as a tracer; and (2) photoelectric cells when organic dye was&nbsp;used as a tracer. Later developments,&nbsp;such as ERTS and Skylab, will provide far more data about Earth, but&nbsp;mostly in planimetric form. The third dimension, height, which makes&nbsp;the map representation topographic, is not easy to measure at orbital&nbsp;altitudes. As regulators of water movement in the hydrological cycle, these reservoirs surpass all lakes combined, natural and manmade. While many aquifers are not well understood, data on many others are adequate for long‐range broad‐scale planning. An example is the basalt aquifer of the Snake River Plain in Idaho. However, the area has managerial problems which concern the time, the place and the feasibility of manipulations of water. All continents of the world contain great aquifers. For every huge aquifer, however, hundreds of smaller ones occur, and even these contain astonishing amounts of water. Aquifers in the Ohio River Basin of the United States are good examples. Management of total water resources is a difficult problem at many places. In order to use the hydrographs in this report to full advantage, they should be studied in conjunction with Meyer's graphs and text (1971). During steady-state conditions, water seeps from the lake through the filtercake and through the aquifers beneath the dike. At those sites where the filtercake is missing, or has about the same permeability as the aquifers, the seepage from the lake is about equivalent to the flow through the aquifers. Present data are insufficient to determine whether or not filtercake buildup has reduced seepage. This report provides information for use by city, county, and State planning groups as well as for sportsmen, tourists, and others interested in preserving the recreational value of Oregon's lakes.</p><p>Because of the large number of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon, a single report covering the State would be bulky. Therefore, the best approach seemed to be to publish several volumes on a county or multicounty basis, and Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook Counties were selected for the first report. (See fig. 1.)</p><p>In addition to office compilation of existing data, most lakes were visited at least once. Visits were made in late summer or early fall when lakes were most accessible and when water temperature and biological activity are at a maximum. Data from such surveys can be used as the basis for more detailed observations from aircraft and on the ground to guide resource exploration, development, and conservation activities.</p><p>The value of earth resource observations from space has been demonstrated by the practical use of photographs from the Gemini and Apollo spaceflights and particularly by a series of multispectral photographs taken during the flight of Apollo 9. The analysis of those photographs has shown that the performance of the planned Earth Resources Technology Satellite will meet the needs of the resource and environmental community for small-scale repetitive images of the earth in the visible and solar infrared portions of the spectrum and has provided a limited base of material for earth scientists to work with in order to ready themselves for the ERTS data.</p><p>The validity of earth resource observations from space can be derived by analogy from the successively closer observations of the moon, culminating in repeated physical sampling of the moon's surface. The method of inductive reasoning and analysis used for the moon is the opposite of the normal deductive analysis used on the earth. A Corps of Engineers' modification of a deep reservoir thermal stratification model developed by Water Resources Engineers, Inc., was applied to two existing Bureau of Reclamation reservoirs for verification.  Diffusion coefficients used for the Corps' Detroit Reservoir were found to apply to Horsetooth Reservoir in Colorado, for which very food computer input data were available. Time-drawdown data measured at 17 observation&nbsp;wells during a 3.5-day aquifer test define an average apparent specific&nbsp;yield of 0.13. Soil-moisture-content data measured at nine access holes&nbsp;during the aquifer test indicate that complete gravity drainage had not&nbsp;been attained in the cone of depression by the end of the drawdown&nbsp;period. The moisture-content data were therefore extrapolated with&nbsp;time to define an average specific yield in the range 0.13 to 0.15. The&nbsp;results obtained by the two methods arc in close agreement. However,&nbsp;the significantly lower standard deviation of the results from the&nbsp;moisture-content analysis indicates that extrapolation of the apparent&nbsp;values derived by this method may provide a more reliable estimate of&nbsp;the true specific yield than the apparent values derived by the&nbsp;time-drawdown method. The classification employs features of several earlier classifications in addition to new classes for bogs and lakeshore communities. Brief descriptions are given for each community, and the important plant species are listed. Discriminant function analysis was used for 40 plant species. Seventy-five percent of the stands studied were classified correctly by this technique.
