But some valley floors have shorter freeze-free seasons than the glancing foothills because air cooled at high elevations flows downward and is trapped in the valleys. This temperature pattern occurs in the western part of the quadrangle in Rabbit Valley, Grass Valley, and the Sevier River Valley near Salina.

Because year-round weather stations are sparse in Utah, a special technique for estimating length of freeze-free season was developed by Dr. Gaylen L. Ashcroft, Assistant Professor of Climatology, Utah State University, and E. Suring these storms, rain falls as a torrential downpour, or cloudburst, in a local area. An inch of rain or more may fall in half an hour; U.S. Weather Bureau records show that o.4 inch of rain has fallen in a period of 5 minutes (Woolley, 1946). Such a fall of water far exceeds the absorptive capacity of the ground surface, and in areas of steep sparsely vegetated terrain the runoff forms a cloudburst flood in which loose rock, soil, and alluvium combine with water to form a debris-laden mudflow. The mudflow then moves rapidly down gullies and canyons with power great enough to erode and to transport debris, and to destroy the works of man lying in its path. When the mudflow pours from the canyon mount into an open valley, solid debris separates from the water and is added to the alluvial fan built by numerous previous floods. Because many towns in Utah are built on fans at the mouths of canyons, there has been loss of life and considerable damage to buildings, streets, and crops since 1847, when white men first settled in Utah.

This map shows historical cloudburst floods for which records exist; data were taken from the sources listed below. Most of the flooded areas shown are in or near populated places, and so the floods were observed and recorded. Actually, no part of the quadrangle is exempt from cloudburst floods; every canyon, dry wash, and swale is visited sooner or later by a cloudburst and becomes, briefly, the site of a destructive mudflow. The traveler is advised to exercise caution in all drainageways, especially during July and August, when 80 percent of the cloudbursts occur.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/i591N","usgsCitation":"Hackman, R., and Williams, P., 1972, Map showing drainage basins and historic cloudburst floods in the Salina quadrangle, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 591, 1 Plate: 40.26 x 27.93 inches; Cover: 9.23 x 11.74 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/i591N.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 40.26 x 27.93 inches; Cover: 9.23 x 11.74 inches","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":255580,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/0591n/plate-1.pdf","text":"Map I-591-N","size":"8.75 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":255582,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/0591n/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":255581,"rank":2,"type":{"id":8,"text":"Cover"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/0591n/report.pdf","text":"Folio Cover","size":"389 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":493515,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9387.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Salina quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -112,38 ], [ -112,39 ], [ -110,39 ], [ -110,38 ], [ -112,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c95b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hackman, Robert J.","contributorId":30999,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hackman","given":"Robert J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":273928,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, Paul L.","contributorId":91086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Paul L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":273927,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The instrument used was a commercial \"falling stream\" turbidimeter that measured the relative transparency of a gravity induced smooth flat sample stream formed as the flow drops vertically from an orifice.
\n
Output results were recorded on a strip-chart recorder as a function of concentration, up to about 100,000 mg/2, for a range of particle sizes and for three kinds of sediment--a fine sand, a silty alluvial soil, and a clayey residual soil. The sensitivity range was improved by use of both the 1/8- and 1/16-inch thick orifices. The use of the two orifice or nozzle sizes provided data useful in evaluation of the effect of particle size and type of sediment at different concentrations. The unique relative transparency-concentration relationships were more linear for coarse than for fine sediments of a given kind. It was concluded that curvature in this relationship resulted from light reflections from the surface of the particles and (or) the fact that some particles moved through the system while in the \"shadow\" of other particles closer to the light source.
\n
The ratio of suspended-sediment concentration to the square root of the median particle size of sand-sized sediments was found to be a useful parameter for elimination of the effect of particle size in the relative transparency-concentration relationships. Thus it was possible to evaluate the effect of the different type of sediment on the relative transparency independent of particle size. The Soil Conservation Service has found a total of approximately 3,500 floodwater-retarding structures to be physically and economically feasible in Texas. As of September 30, 1970, 1,439 of these structures had been built.

This watershed-development program will have varying but important effects on the natural surface- and ground-water resources of river basins, especially where a large number of the floodwater-retarding structures are built. Basic hydrologic data under natural and developed conditions are needed to appraise the effects of the structures on the yield and mode of occurrence of runoff.

Hydrologic investigations of these small watershed study areas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1951 and are now being made in 12 areas (fig. 1). These investigations are being made in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board, the Soil Conservation Service, the San Antonio River Authority, the city of Dallas, and the Tarrant County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1. The 12 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. In five of the study areas (North, Little Elm, Mukewater, Little Pond-North Elm, and Pin Oak Creeks), streamflow and rainfall records were collected prior to construction of the floodwater-retarding structures, thus affording the opportunity for analyses of the conditions 'before and after\" development. Structures have now been built in four of these study areas. A summary of the development of the floodwater-retarding structures in each study area as of September 30, 1970, is shown in table 1.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/70214098","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board and Soil Conservation Service","usgsCitation":"Hampton, B., 1972, Annual compilation and analysis of hydrologic data for Honey Creek, Trinity River Basin, Texas, 1970: Open-File Report, iv, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70214098.","productDescription":"iv, 66 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393110,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70214098/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":393109,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70214098/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Honey Creek, Trinity River Basin","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hampton, B.B.","contributorId":43362,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hampton","given":"B.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":828720,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The period selected for the calculation was 1930-66. \r\n\r\nPermeability of the water-bearing sediments was calculated from aquifer test data and from computations involving specific-capacity data from 200 wells in the outflow area. Permeability ranged from less than 100 to more than 5,000 gallons per day per square foot. \r\n\r\nThe annual hydraulic gradient was derived from contour maps of average water levels in wells for each water year for the period 1930-66. \r\n\r\nThe cross-sectional area used to calculate ground-water outflow from Chino basin extends southwestward from Pedley Hills to Puente Hills. The area of the outflow section is the saturated thickness of permeable materials measured along the line of section. Part of the lower boundary is the interface between the alluvium and the underlying basement complex, and part is a change in permeability within sedimentary rocks. Geological methods were combined with geophysical methods to determine the cross-sectional area of the water-bearing sediments. Gravity and seismic traverses, drill-hole logs, and data from a more than 600 drill holes, including eight test holes drilled as a part of this investigation, were used to delineate the size and the shape of the outflow area. For the period of calculation, 1930-66, the total area of the outflow section varied from about 16 to 22 million square feet. The fluctuation in total area is caused by changes in the altitude of the water table. \r\n\r\nAnnual ground-water outflow from Chino basin calculated by the direct method for the period 1930-66 ranged from 38,000 acre-feet in the 1941 water year to 9,400 acre-feet in the 1966 water year.\r\n\r\nTwo indirect methods of calculating ground-water outflow were studied as a part of this project: the chemical method and the water-budget method. The chemical method was found to be unsatisfactory. Although the ground-water discharge into the Santa Ana River from Chino basin is quite different in chemical composition from the discharge from Temescal basin, there is no known way to quantitatively separate the total discharge with respect to source. In the water-budget method direct runoff and evapotranspiration were reevaluated, and the ground-water outflow from Temescal basin was calculated by the same direct method employed for Chino basin. Annual ground-water outflow from Temescal basin calculated by the direct method for the period 1930-66 ranged from 11,000 acre-feet in the 1940 and 1945 water years to 3,000 acre-feet in the 1965 water year. Annual ground-water outflow from Chino basin computed by the water-budget method for the period 1933-63 ranged from 45,000 acre-feet in the 1941 water year to 10,000 acre-feet in the 1963 water year.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1999G","usgsCitation":"French, J.J., 1972, Ground-water outflow from Chino Basin, Upper Santa Ana Valley, southern California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1999, Report: iv, 28 p.; 1 Plate: 37.00 x 20.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1999G.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 28 p.; 1 Plate: 37.00 x 20.00 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414721,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25354.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":26484,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999g/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26483,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999g/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137352,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999g/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Chino basin, Upper Santa Ana Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.75,\n              34.033\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.75,\n              33.816\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.417,\n              33.816\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.417,\n              34.033\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.75,\n              34.033\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cee4b07f02db5455d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"French, James J.","contributorId":103651,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"French","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143668,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Certain modifications, which include the heating of the sample outside the instrument, protect the system from acid gases and insure the conversion of all hydrogen to water vapor. Moisture analyzer data are compared to concurrent data obtained by a modified Penfield method. In general, there is a positive bias of from 0.1 to 0.2% in the moisture analyzer results and a similarity of bias in minerals of the same kind. Inhomogeneity, sample size, and moisture pick-up are invoked to explain deviations. Reports in this series are prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources and are designed to provide data to enable interested parties such as legislators, administrators, and planners to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.

This report, like the others (see references, p. 21), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. It also contains supplementary data that are related to ground-water use in some areas. In reports of this series, the inclusion of such supplementary data as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration is intended only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.

The report includes individual discussions of the most important areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1970. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the period spring 1970 to spring 1971. Many of the data used in the report were collected by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Utah","usgsCitation":"Cordova, R., Bjorklund, L., McGreevy, L.J., Bolke, E., Sumison, C., Herbert, L.R., Butler, R., Mower, R.W., Sandberg, G.W., and Adams, D.B., 1971, Developing a state water plan: Ground-water conditions in Utah, spring of 1971: Cooperative Investigations Report 9, viii, 72 p.","productDescription":"viii, 72 p.","numberOfPages":"80","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":333680,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":333679,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/libview.exe?Modinfo=Viewpub&LIBNUM=50-1-194"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58863a13e4b0cad700058b63","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cordova, R.M.","contributorId":77511,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cordova","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":659723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bjorklund, L.J.","contributorId":14035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bjorklund","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":659724,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McGreevy, L.
