Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. The Medina River in Bandera County, Texas, is in the Edwards Plateau, where high-intensity rain rates and steep terrain frequently contribute to severe flash flooding capable of causing loss of life and property. For example, the July 5, 2002, flood claimed a total of 12 lives in the central Texas area. The estimated peak discharge during this flood at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamflow-gaging station 08178880 Medina River at Bandera, Tex., was 159,000 cubic feet per second (corresponding to a stage or gage height of 38.91 feet), causing significant flooding in Bandera near Mud Creek and farther downstream.
In 2018, the USGS, in cooperation with the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District and the Texas Water Development Board, developed a flood early-warning toolset to enhance the communication of flood risk and provide emergency management with additional information to improve flood response and mitigation. This toolset consists of a continuous streamflow-gage monitoring network, a well-calibrated hydraulic model of the Medina River, and a flood-inundation mapper application for the study area. A library of flood-inundation maps tied to the National Weather Service river stage forecast capability is included with the toolset.

This fact sheet describes water quality and geochemistry of the Little Arkansas River and Equus Beds aquifer during 2001 through 2016 as part of the City of Wichita’s Equus Beds aquifer storage and recovery project in south-central Kansas. The Equus Beds aquifer storage and recovery project was developed to help meet future water demand by pumping water out of the Little Arkansas River (during above-base-flow conditions), treating it using National Primary Drinking Water Regulations as a guideline, and injecting it into the aquifer for later use. Water-quality data were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey from 2 Little Arkansas River surface-water sites and 63 Equus Beds groundwater sites, including 38 areal assessment index wells, each of which has a shallow well and a deep well. About 4,700 surface and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for more than 300 water-quality constituents. About 1,300 groundwater chemistry samples were geochemically modeled. Constituents of concern in the Equus Beds aquifer exceeded their respective Federal criteria throughout the study period and included chloride, sulfate, nitrate plus nitrite, Escherichia coli (E. coli), total coliforms, and dissolved iron and arsenic species.

Nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus, are necessary for healthy aquatic communities to thrive, but if nutrient concentrations are too high, water quality can be degraded and natural aquatic communities may be destroyed. Nutrients consistently have been listed nationally as one of the top five causes of stream and river impairments, and agriculture consistently has been identified as the leading known source. The Mississippi River watershed was identified as a top priority for nutrient reductions because of the predominant agricultural land use, the associated harmful effects of nutrient loading on local water bodies, and the resulting annual midsummer northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic “dead” zone. In 2010, the Natural Resources Conservation Service started the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative, which offers financial and technical assistance for voluntary conservation practices on agricultural lands. The intention is to reduce nutrient and sediment export to waterways within the Mississippi River watershed. The U.S. Geological Survey Missouri Water Science Center and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources began a cooperative study in 2010 to compare temporal changes in total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations in the Lower Grand River.
Despite increases in conservation practice funding from the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative during 2011–15 for the Lower Grand River, decreases in flow-normalized total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations during this same period at the Grand River site were less than at the other long-term Missouri River tributary sites that did not receive additional funding. The flow-normalized total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations at the three long-term Missouri River tributary sites were related to the amount of agricultural land use within their watersheds and livestock manure may be a substantial source of stream nitrogen. Monthly total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations within the Lower Grand River increased with increased streamflow, indicating that the major sources of nitrogen and phosphorus are runoff or nutrients that are stored in soils within the streambank that mobilize during higher streamflows. Programs such as the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative are intended to encourage voluntary agricultural conservation practices to enhance soil health and reduce nutrient export to streams.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quantitatively assessed the potential for undiscovered, technically recoverable continuous oil and gas resources in the Eastern Great Basin Province (Anna and others, 2007) of Nevada, Utah, and Idaho (fig. 1). The assessment focused on the area of the province between the Roberts Mountains and Sevier thrust systems (Peterson, 1994). The major petroleum source rocks within this area are the Upper Devonian–Lower Mississippian Pilot Shale and the Mississippian Chainman Formation (Gutschick and Rodriquez, 1979; Poole and Claypool, 1984; Giles, 1994; Trexler and others, 1995). The geologic model applied to the Pilot Shale and shales in the Chainman Formation is for these shales to have achieved generative maturity for oil by burial to at least 8,700 feet (2,652 meters) within some of the Neogene extensional basins (Grabb, 1994; Anna and others, 2007). Areas that satisfy this depth requirement were defined using modeled gravity data that were calibrated to the petroleum system in Railroad Valley and Pine Valley in Nevada (Barker and Peterson, 1991; Ïnan and Davis, 1994; Meissner, 1995; Anna and others, 2007).

Information concerning the availability, use, and quality of water in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana, is critical for proper water-supply management. The purpose of this fact sheet is to present information that can be used by water managers, parish residents, and others for stewardship of this vital resource. In 2014, 39.63 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water were withdrawn in East Carroll Parish: 32.43 Mgal/d from groundwater sources and 7.20 Mgal/d from surface-water sources. Withdrawals for agricultural use—composed of general irrigation, rice irrigation, and livestock—accounted for 97 percent (38.55 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Other categories of use included public supply and rural domestic. Water-use data collected at 5-year intervals from 1960 to 2010 and again in 2014 indicated that water withdrawals peaked in 1980 at 47.96 Mgal/d.

Information concerning the availability, use, and quality of water in Jackson Parish, Louisiana, is critical for proper water-supply management. The purpose of this fact sheet is to present information that can be used by water managers, parish residents, and others for stewardship of this vital resource. In 2014, about 4.38 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water were withdrawn in Jackson Parish: 4.36 Mgal/d from groundwater sources and 0.02 Mgal/d from surface-water sources. Withdrawals for public-supply use accounted for about 42 percent (1.85 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn, and industrial use accounted for about 54 percent (2.36 Mgal/d). Other categories of use included livestock and rural domestic. Water-use data collected at 5-year intervals from 1960 to 2010 and again in 2014 indicate that water withdrawals peaked in 1975 at about 15.26 Mgal/d. The significant decrease in water use from 1975 to 1980 was caused by a reduction of 10.38 Mgal/d in withdrawals for industrial use.

Information concerning the availability, use, and quality of water in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is critical for proper water-supply management. The purpose of this fact sheet is to present information that can be used by water managers, parish residents, and others for stewardship of this vital resource. In 2014, about 41.73 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water were withdrawn in Richland Parish, including about 28.57 Mgal/d from groundwater sources and 13.17 Mgal/d from surface-water sources. Withdrawals for agricultural use, composed of general irrigation, rice irrigation, aquaculture, and livestock uses, accounted for about 88 percent (36.88 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Other categories of use included public supply, which accounted for about 10 percent (4.38 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn and rural domestic which accounted for about 1 percent (0.48 Mgal/d). Water-use data collected at 5-year intervals from 1960 to 2010 and again in 2014 indicate that water withdrawals peaked in 1980 at more than 60 Mgal/d.

Information concerning the availability, use, and quality of water in Tensas Parish, Louisiana, is critical for proper water-supply management. The purpose of this fact sheet is to present information that can be used by water managers, parish residents, and others for stewardship of this vital resource. In 2014, 38.01 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water were withdrawn in Tensas Parish, including about 33.02 Mgal/d from groundwater sources and about 4.99 Mgal/d from surface-water sources. Withdrawals for agricultural use, composed of general irrigation, rice irrigation, aquaculture, and livestock, accounted for about 97 percent (36.88 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Other use categories included public supply and rural domestic. Water-use data collected at 5-year intervals from 1960 to 2010 and again in 2014 indicated that water withdrawals peaked in 2014. The large increase in 1985 relative to 1980 and 1990 for groundwater usage is likely an outlier that is attributable to a change in methodology for estimating rice irrigation. A transition in available farm-by-farm data from 1980 to 1985 to 1990 resulted in three different methods being used for estimating groundwater withdrawals for rice irrigation.

Information concerning the availability, use, and quality of water in West Carroll Parish, Louisiana, is critical for proper water-supply management. The purpose of this fact sheet is to present information that can be used by water managers, parish residents, and others for stewardship of this vital resource. In 2014, 21.27 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water were withdrawn in West Carroll Parish, including 17.91 Mgal/d from groundwater sources and 3.37 Mgal/d from surface-water sources. Withdrawals for agricultural use, composed of general irrigation, rice irrigation, and livestock, accounted for 93 percent (19.76 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Other use categories included public supply and rural domestic. Water-use data collected at 5-year intervals from 1960 to 2010 and again in 2014 indicated that water withdrawals peaked in 2000 at 31.7 Mgal/d. The large decreases in water use from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2005 to 2010 are primarily attributable to declines in groundwater withdrawals for rice irrigation from 10 Mgal/d in 1985 to 2.22 Mgal/d in 1990 and from 10.52 Mgal/d in 2005 to 5.14 Mgal/d in 2010. Surface-water withdrawals for general irrigation declined from 2.44 Mgal/d in 1985 to 0.42 Mgal/d in 1990 and from 2.2 Mgal/d in 2005 to 1.1 Mgal/d in 2010. Surface-water withdrawals for rice irrigation declined from 1.41 Mgal/d in 1985 to 0.66 Mgal/d in 1990 and from 2.06 Mgal/d in 2005 to 1.01 Mgal/d in 2010.

Withdrawals for agricultural use—including general irrigation, rice irrigation, and livestock—accounted for about 97 percent (106.29 Mgal/d) of the total water withdrawn. Other categories of use included public supply, rural domestic, and industrial. Water-use data collected at 5-year intervals from 1960 to 2010 and again in 2014 indicated that water withdrawals peaked in 1975 at 167.82 Mgal/d.

The San Juan-Silverton caldera complex located near Silverton, Colorado, in the Southern Rocky Mountains volcanic field is an ideal natural laboratory for furthering the understanding of shallow-to-deep volcanic-related mineral systems. Recent advances in geophysical data processing and three-dimensional (3D) model construction will help to characterize shallow properties important for understanding surface water and groundwater quality issues and will also improve knowledge of deep geological structures that may have been conduits for hydrothermal fluids that formed mineral deposits. The study has general applications to mineral resource assessments in other areas of the world and to identifying possible groundwater flow paths and associated geochemistry important in abandoned mine lands cleanup.
Silverton, Colorado, is the site of a spectacular succession of igneous rocks that formed beginning about 35 million years ago (Ma). Base metals (copper, lead, and zinc) and precious metals (silver and gold) mined from the late 1870s to 1991 owe their existence to a 25-million-year cycle of igneous activity. The presence of economic, base, and precious metal deposits within a complex geological setting were largely responsible for stimulating studies by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted during the early 20th century. The focus of investigations in the late 20th and 21st centuries have broadened in scope to include abandoned mine lands (AML) investigations. The legacy of hard rock mining in headwater catchment areas caused environmental challenges for local communities and downstream water resource users. The Gold King Mine, located a few kilometers north of Silverton, illustrates the potential environmental effects of abandoned mines. On August 5, 2015, during reclamation efforts at the Gold King Mine, a breach of collapsed workings sent approximately 3 million gallons of acidic and metal-rich mine water into the upper Animas River, a tributary to the Colorado River Basin. Mining-related sources of metals and acidity add to geological sources of metals in surface water and groundwater. Weathering processes of altered and mineralized rock have been a source of acid rock drainage that have been ongoing for millennia.

Groundwater provides more than 40 percent of California’s drinking water. To protect this vital resource, the State of California created the Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program. The Priority Basin Project (PBP) of the GAMA Program provides a comprehensive assessment of the State’s groundwater quality and increases public access to groundwater-quality information. One GAMA-PBP study unit is in the western part of the Mojave Desert, where shallow aquifers provide drinking water for many rural households.

California faces unprecedented challenges presented by shifting weather patterns that are defining a “new normal.” The result has been extreme weather events, prolonged drought, flooding, and debris flows. These conditions drive severe tree mortality, increase wildfire occurrence and intensity, reduce water availability, and hasten subsidence in groundwater basins. Collectively, these challenges threaten public safety, compromise infrastructure, and adversely impact the economic well-being of California's citizens. Critical applications that address these issues depend on light detection and ranging (lidar) data that provide a highly detailed, three-dimensional (3D) model of the Earth’s surface. The U.S. Geological Survey 3D Elevation Program works in partnership with Federal, State, Tribal, U.S. territorial, and local agencies to acquire consistent lidar coverage to meet the needs of California and the Nation.
