In June 1968, the Soil Conservation Service estimated approximately 3,500 structures to be physically and economically feasible for installation in Texas. As of September 30, 1968, 1,271 of these structures had been built.</p><p>This watershed-development program will have varying but important effects on the surface- and ground-water resources of river basins, especially where a large number of the floodwater-retarding structures are built. Basic hydrologic data are needed to appraise the effects of structures on water yield and mode of occurrence of runoff.</p><p>Hydrologic investigations of these small watersheds were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1951 and are now being made in 11 areas (fig. 1). These studies are being made in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board, the Soil Conservation Service, the San Antonio River Authority, the city of Dallas, and the Tarrant ounty Water Control and Improvement District No. 1. The 11 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. In four of the study areas (Mukewater, North, Little Elm, and Pin Oak Creeks), streamflow and rainfall records were collected prior to construction of the floodwater-retarding structures, thus affording the opportunity for analyses of the conditions \"before and after\" development. Structures have now been built in three of these study areas. The importance of water to a developing economy cannot be overemphasized. </p><p>A few decades ago, hydrology was a division of hydraulic engineering and was a tool for project survey, plan, and design. Today hydrology still remains an important part of planning and management of water use projects, but it is imperative that surface and ground-water basic data networks be designed and operated from the standpoint of both present and future water needs. Water problems are ever increasing and ever changing and preparation for the future water demands of Zambia requires knowledge of the hydrology of the country instead of the examination of piecemeal samples for each water use project. </p><p>The hydrologic survey of Zambia needs to be under the guidance of competent and imaginative hydrologists solidly trained in all elements of basic data collection and analysis and not in the hands of water project planners. Hydrology is a science which requires the highest order of teamwork and the hydrologist will need the help and advice of many employees within the organization to operate the network, provide adequate research, and examine the water needs of the country. It must be thoroughly understood that communication is essential between the hydrological survey and water project planners from both the government and private sectors. </p><p>It is very important to define the aims and duties of the Hydrological Branch of the Water Affairs Department in a clear cut \"Statement of Policy\". Personal copies of the statement should be made available to all professional employees and technicians. The reasons for the existence of the Branch may be self-apparent to heads of the organization, but to all other employees the reasons may be vague and unknown. Every member of the technical and administrative staff would benefit by an understanding of the purpose of his work. Nebulous ideas of the function of a hydrological survey of Zambia serve little purpose to the employee making the plans or those who execute them. The number of wells increased from about 500 in 1960 to 2,560 in 1970. In 1968 the U.S. Geological Survey began a study in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board; the Colorado Division of Water Resources, Office of the State Engineer; and the Management Districts of the northern High Plains to provide information for administration and management of the vital ground-water reserves of the northern High Plains.</p><p>The northern High Plains of Colorado is formed from an erosional remanent of the Ogallala Formation of Pliocene Age that extends from the South Platte River on the north to the Arkansas River on the south, and from Limon, Colo. on the west across the Colorado State line on the east (fig. 1). This area includes all&nbsp;or part of 11 counties and contains about 9,500 square miles. General information describing the ground-water resources of the northern High Plains of Colorado is presented in table 1. Plate 1 shows the net changes in water level between 1964 and 1971. Other published water-level change maps are for the period from 1964-68 and 1964-69 (Boettcher and others, 1969). The map (pl. 1) is based on annual water-level measurements made in 1964 and 1971 in about 300 wells tapping the Ogallala aquifer. Areas with either a net decline or a net rise are shown. Large declines recorded near Yuma and Burlington correspond to relatively high concentrations (2 per sq mi) of high-capacity wells. Also included in this report are 11 hydrographs typical of the water-level changes during this period (figs. 2-4). The hydrographs show water-level changes from 1964, or as early as 1956 to 1971, and illustrate the consistency of water-level change rates. The basin is about 5,050 square miles in area, and extends about 110 miles south from Merrill to Wisconsin Dells. The basin includes all or parts of the following counties: Adams, Clark, Columbia, Jackson, Juneau, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Monroe, Portage, Sauk, Taylor, Waushara, and Wood.</span></p>\n<p><strong>PURPOSE AND SCOPE</strong></p>\n<p><span>This study provides a background of hydrologic knowledge suitable for use by water-resource planners and managers, and it provides a framework for more detailed water-resource studies in the future. Specifically, the purposes of this report are to: (1) Describe the geologic and hydrologic environments of the central Wisconsin River basin. (2) Describe the water resources of the central Wisconsin River basin including their sources, uses, quality, interrelationships, availability, and behavior within the basin environment. Much of the information in this report has been generalized to allow presentation in the atlas format. Liberal use was made of available data from many sources and interpretations from published reports. Additional material was collected and analyzed to allow a balanced presentation on water resources and the physical environment. This study is part of an investigation of the water resources of the major river basins in Wisconsin. The completed basin studies and those being studied are shown on the cover envelope. The information in this report should be adequate for the broad aspects of planning water-resource development and management. The primary objective was to identify the causes of the occurrence and persistence of flooding and to gain data on which to base recommendations for remedial action.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The scope of the study included establishing and operating flow and stage-recording gages on the Swamp, Kawainui Canal, and the inner canal; periodic and repeated measurements of ground-water level in test borings throughout the residential area; collection and analysis of soil and construction borings made for engineering purposes; the assembly and analysis of all available data relating surface and subsurface flow conditions, and the development of conclusions as to the causes and means to alleviate the flooding. The rapid growth of this area has resulted in an increase in ground-water withdrawals such that in 1968 about 67.5 million gallons per day was pumped to satisfy the demands of municipal, irrigation and industrial users.\n\nDeclines of water-levels of as much as 30 feet in the area cause pumps to lose suction and increase the hazard of upward migration of saline water.  However, no widespread deterioration of water quality has been noted to date.\n\nConsiderable hydrologic data are available for the Lakeland ridge area.  However, in order to give water managers a proper base for decisions that would allow for optimum utilization of the groundwater resources, more detailed data are needed about the hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer, the quantity of groundwater withdrawals, and the quality of water at various depths in the Floridan aquifer.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Some wells drilled for the city of Pensacola have yielded water with unacceptably high amounts of iron and carbon dioxide, and wells have had disappointingly low yields. The city, therefore, is seeking hydrologic information, including water-quality data, in an effort to avoid the high cost of well abandonment and to plan for future expansion of the water-supply system.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Objectives and approach</p>\n<p>This study is intended to provide information on the quality and quantity of water available from the sand-and-gravel aquifer, the only fresh-water aquifer in the Pensacola area, and to delineate those areas favorable for public-supply well sites.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The project area is southern Escambia County, from Pensacola to S.R. (State Road) 196 north of Quintette (fig. 1). The biogenic sections include both siliceous and calcareous deposits. At three sites the drilling terminated in basalt, one of which (Site 62) is interpreted as being intrusive on the basis of intense alteration of the overlying sediment. With the exception of Ca++ and Sr , compositional changes in the pore waters are characteristically small relative to those reported previously for rapidly deposited, non-biogenic sediments. Ca++ and Sr + , however, exhibit concentrations of up to three times and ten times, respectively, those found in sea water. In several instances, constant concentration gradients as a function of depth have been found. </p><p>The sampling, storage and analytical procedures employed have been briefly described in an earlier report (Sayles et al, 1970) and are detailed in a manuscript in preparation (Manheim and Chan). Sodium has been calculated as the difference between the summation of the anions and the summation of the major cations exclusive of sodium; to date, this method has proven more accurate than direct analytical methods. Agreement between the two types of silica determination used (emission spectrometric and colorimetric) is poor; the values obtained by emission spectrometry are characteristically higher. The colorimetric technique measures only \"reactive\" silica (monomeric and possibly dimeric) while the emission spectrometric technique will determine all of the silica in solution and in suspension. The silica content of most of the solutions is high (60 ppm) and polymerization is likely. We are currently investigating this discrepancy.
