Michelson quadrangle, Alaska","docAbstract":"Analysis of 88 samples from the Shublik formation on Fire Creek, Mt. Michelson Quadrangle, Alaska, are presented in tabular form. The results include the determination of elements by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis, phosphate by X-ray fluorescence, carbon dioxide by acid decomposable carbonate, total carbon by induction furnace, carbonate carbon by conversion using the conversion factor of 0.2727 for amount of carbon in carbon dioxide, and organic carbon by difference. \r\n\r\nA seven- cycle semilogarithmic chart presents the data graphically and illustrates the range, mode, and mean for some of the elements. The chart shows, also, the approximate concentration of the same elements in rocks similar to the black shale and limestone of the Shublik Formation. \r\n\r\nEach sample represents 5 feet of section and is composed of rock chips taken at 1 - foot intervals. The samples are keyed into a stratigraphic column of the formation. \r\n\r\nRocks of the Shublik Formation contain anomalously high concentrations of some of the elements. These same elements might be expected to be high in some of the petroleum from northern Alaska if the Shublik Formation is a source for this petroleum. Based on present data the gross value of the deposit, with a value of $25.00 or more per ton, is $20,000,000. A belt of metasedimentary rocks, intruded by gabbro to the south and granite to the north, was the host for fissure vein-replacement type mineralization. Most of the mineralization is in a siliceous dolomite transected by fissures. Original descriptions of the individual fault-events published in English, French, German, or Spanish were used whenever possible, supplemented by translations of selected passages of reports published in Japanese and Chinese. For some events, original descriptions were not published in these languages and secondary sources were used. Although more than 100 fault-events have been reported in the literature, only those for which reliable data (in the judgement of the present writers) were available on at least two of the three parameters M, L, and D are included in this interim report and listed in table 1. Some fault-events have been omitted because the available reports contained significantly different data for the same event and the writers had insufficient basis for choosing between them.</p><p>This report was prepared to permit early release of part of the results of a more comprehensive study of historic surface faulting now under way, and to elicit suggestions and criticisms from users of the report. Comments are especially invited regarding the methods used in designating the fault type and in identifying the main fault.</p><p>The more comprehensive report will deal with subsidiary faults as well as main faults, will have detailed citations of the sources of information, and will discuss various additional aspects of faulting. It is anticipated that reliable data on a few more faults will be obtained, and it is hoped that comments from users of this interim report will permit improvement of the comprehensive report. Attention was first focused on this region in the early 1950's, after oil and gas were discovered in the Cretaceous of the North Slope by the U.S. Navy. The presence of similar Cretaceous strata in the Yukon-Koyukuk province and the possibility that some of the broad alluviated lowlands within the province might be underlain by Tertiary basins were pointed out by Gryc and others (1951) and Payne (1955). Between 1954 and 1961 large parts of the province were reconnoitered by oil company surface parties and a small amount of geophysical work was carried out in the Nulato-Kateel and Bethel areas. The explorational activity culminated in 1960-61 with the drilling of two deep tests, a 12,000-foot hole near Nulato on the Yukon River and a 15,000-foot hole at Napatuk Creek in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Coastal Lowland. Apparently neither test revealed oil shows or favorable reservoir rocks, as exploration and leasing activity in the province declined sharply thereafter.</p><p>Since 1954 the U.S. Geological Survey has maintained a modest but continuing program of reconnaissance geologic mapping of the province and its borderlands. Nearly all parts of this vast area have been visited either by helicopter or river boat. Although information in many places is still sketchy, the broad outlines of the surface geology are now known. Subsurface data, however, are almost totally lacking.</p><p>The mapping indicates that the petroleum possibilities over most of the province are limited because of complex structure and scarcity of promising reservoir rocks. This information is in support of geologic mapping and as part of a program of mineral land classification. Lead, zinc, and silver are the principal ore metals and galena and sphalerito are the ore minerals identified to date. Throughout the core there is a somewhat better correlation of silver with zinc than with lead.</p><p>The richest interval of core is in the main vein, 51-1/2 feet of core from 430 to 482 feet, and averages nearly 20 ounces of silver to the ton. Within this interval, 15 feet of core from 444 to 459 feet averages 60 ounces of silver to the ton. The richest single sample represents the five-foot interval from 454 to 459 feet and is reported to contain nearly 140 ounces of silver to the ton. The HRB-Singer Inc., data, obtained in the 3-5 micrometer wavelength band between 10:32 and 11:53 p.m. (MST) in Spite of smoke in the atmosphere, revealed a fault that had not been mapped in the field and that was not visible on vertical black and white aerial photography.</p><p>Twenty-four days later under clear weather conditions, the NASA aircraft obtained infrared imagery in the 8-14 micrometer band on a night overflight of the same area, but the fault mentioned above is not readily identified.</p><p>Nighttime infrared observations assist stratigraphic and structural studies. Rhyolitic lava flows and welded tuff layers, having relatively high thermal inertia, are well outlined as bright (warm) areas on both sets of the nighttime This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Contract No. R-09-020-011, Task No. 160-75-01-50-10.</p><p>The project was initiated in FY 1968 to evaluate the applicability of satellite relay telemetry in the collection of seismic data from a large number of dense seismograph clusters laid out along the major fault systems of western North America. R. Mabey and F. Keller to delineate the source of the aeromagnetic total-intensity anomaly that was interpreted as being the expression of a commercial magnetite deposit.</p><p>Results of the investigation indicate that a zone of magnetite more than 1700 meters in length lies beneath southward protruding ridges and the adjoining margin of a wadi in the central part of the area; and that a small zone of less economic importance occurs beneath a low ridge to the east. Within these zones, the magnetite probably occurs as lenticular masses, stringers, and veins, which aggregate in substantial quantities that constitute the richer parts and are marked by magnetic anomalies.</p><p>The main zone is inferred to be the source of the total -intensity anomaly and is several hundred meters longer than is indicated by the wide-spaced aeromagnetic profiles. This zone averages about 75 meters in width. It may contain as much as 50 percent magnetite, however an estimate of the tonnage represented cannot be made reliably without more complete subsurface information.</p><p>A study of drilling sites in the area reveals that most of the holes are along the south edge of the main zone and were not properly located to test the richer parts as indicated by our magnetic data.</p><p>Drill hole N 40, which was abandoned in November owing to broken drilling equipment, is properly located to test the richest part of the main magnetite-bearing zone. These values were computed using: (1) Terzaghi's bearing capacity equations for circular footings, (2) Meyerhof's dimensionless numbers for general shear on level surfaces, (3) a cohesion of 10<sup>3</sup> dynes per cm<sup>2</sup>, (4) a density of 1.35 gm per cm<sup>3</sup> for the near surface materials, (5) a density of 2.7 gm per cm<sup>3</sup> for the block or boulder, (6) spheroidal (triaxial) boulders unless definite shapes can be established, (7) footing radii equal to the half-width of the block or boulder, the half-width of the track, and(or) the half-width of the shadow near the base of the block or boulder.</p><p>For 115 secondary impact craters and their corresponding blocks, dynamic strengths are estimated using: (1) the product of one-half the mass per unit area of the block and the normal component of velocity squared divided by the crater depth, and (2) the ratio of the kinetic energy of the block and the volume of the secondary crater. Velocities of the blocks are calculated using a ballistics equation and assuming an ejection angle of 45°. Block densities are taken as 2.7 gm per cm<sup>3</sup>. Dynamic strengths of the near surface materials using the first procedure average 25.2 x 10<sup>5</sup> dynes per cm<sup>2</sup> (37 psi); and, for the second procedure, they average 19.2 x 10<sup>5</sup> dynes per cm<sup>2</sup> (28 psi). Comparison between dynamic strengths and expected static strengths, computed for each block using the assumptions above, show that most of the dynamic strengths correspond to the static strengths when the friction angle is 30° and larger.&nbsp;</p><p>Data on experimental low velocity impacts with natural targets are compared with the lunar data on secondary impacts. Nara's modified Poncelet equation for sand yields an average angle of internal friction near 34° using the appropriate block and soil constants mentioned above.&nbsp;</p><p>Comparison of coefficients computed using the equations for sand of Clark and McCarty, Mortensen, and Moore for the lunar data with the corresponding constants for terrestrial data indicate the lunar coefficients are generally low. The events were at different azimuths and distances from LASA. Apparent-velocity measurements using arrival-time data at the subarrays differed by about 30 percent for events in the northwest and southeast directions.Apparent velocities were high near the center of the array for events in the northwest and low for events in the southeast. For events in the other azimuths, the patterns were more complex, but anomalous values were found near the center. Apparent-velocity measurements at subarrays were made using a cross-spectral technique. The resulting values showed patterns similar to those obtained using arrival-time data near the center. Earth resources technology satellite will provide the EROS program with data for use in dealing with natural resource problems and understanding the interaction between man and the environment. Applications will include studies of tectonic features, hydrologic problems, location of fish schools, determination of the conditions of range land, mapping land use for urban planning, studies of erosion and change along coastlines and major streams, and inventories of land use and land forms. In addition, the ERTS data may be used for detecting forest and crop diseases and inventorying crops. The ERTS satellite will be in a polar, sun-synchronous orbit so that each point on the earth's surface will be sensed every 17 to 20 days, at the same time of day. Multispectral photography is being investigated for its usefulness in hydrology. Side-looking airborne radar has not yet been widely used in hydrologic studies, although it is an excellent tool for all-weather, day or night, coverage of large areas. They include sensor, identification accuracy, and congruencing constraints; the nature of the answers demanded of the sensor system; and the complex temporal variances of crops in large areas. Attention is then focused on several methods which may be used in the statistical analysis of multidimensional remote sensing data.</p><p>Crop discrimination for radar K-band imagery is investigated by three methods. The first one uses a Bayes decision rule, the second a nearest-neighbor spatial conditional probability approach, and the third the standard statistical techniques of cluster analysis and principal axes representation.</p><p>Results indicate that crop type and percent of cover significantly affect the strength of the radar return signal. Sugar beets, corn, and very bare ground are easily distinguishable, sorghum, alfalfa, and young wheat are harder to distinguish. Distinguishability will be improved if the imagery is examined in time sequence so that changes between times of planning, maturation, and harvest provide additional discriminant tools. The study area consists of sixteen 7 1/2-minute quadrangles in Spotsylvania and adjoining counties, Virginia. East-west traverses were flown at a spacing of 1/2 mi and a flight elevation of 500 ft above ground. Geophysical data were compiled at a scale of 1:24,000, with a contour interval of 25 gammas for the magnetics and 25 counts per sec for the aeroradioactivity. The geophysical data were checked in the field, and a lithologic map was made. Correlation is excellent between geophysical data and lithologic units, and it is evident that good detailed aeromagnetic and aeroradioactivity maps can provide appreciable shortcuts in mapping an area such as the Piedmont, where lithologies are complex and outcrops sparse. Radioactivity highs are generally associated with magnetic lows, and more importantly, for purposes of geologic interpretation where the magnetic expression is flat and featureless, there is considerable radioactivity detail for geologic guidance. By using the two geophysical maps in conjunction, the geology between widely spaced outcrops can be worked out. In the study area, high radioactivity and low magnetic intensity characterize granitic rocks, many of which were not previously mapped. Mafic bodies are characterized by high magnetic values and low radioactivity. Because of this, biostratigraphers have commonly based conclusions on the occurrences of relatively few species. The use of binary similarity coefficients, cluster analysis techniques, and digital computers allows a polythetic approach to biostratigraphy. The approach is free of circular and a priori reasoning in that it is established that assemblage zones (major clusters in a dendrogram) are present before the biostratigraphic utility of various taxa for the recognition of the zones is determined. A measure for determining the biostratigraphic fidelity of a species for established zones is proposed. The amount of air measured in glasses from nine upper Tertiary ash-flow sheets in the western United States ranges from 0.033 to 13 ppm; median is about 1 ppm. These values are very small compared with the total amounts of volatiles which probably were incorporated during welding. Allanite porphyroblasts develop by replacement of biotite, probably in the presence of emanations from the rare earth-rich and thorium-rich Silver Plume Granite. The largest allanite crystals are made up of nearly isotropic (metamict) cores and birefringent (recrystallized) rims. Smaller crystals are made up exclusively of birefringent material. The maximum birefringence is shown to be that expectable in allanite of Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary age. As plotted on maps, the birefringence increases, and the thorium and uranium contents of the allanite decrease toward a Laramide stock. The variation in birefringence is, therefore, largely relatable to variations in the post-Laramide radiation dosage brought about by differences in the amounts of uranium and thorium lost during recrystallization. The recrystallized allanite is itself partly replaced by epidote which characteristically occurs as a border between allanite and biotite.</p><p>Total rare-earth oxides for the eight samples of allanite analyzed range from 17.5 to 21.3 percent by weight. In 13 samples, thorium ranged from 0.50 to 1.14 percent by weight, and uranium from 54 to 158 parts pparts per million. Ranges in optical measurements for 20 samples using the spindle stage are: Nα = 1.719–1.759, Nβ = 1.731-1.774, N<sub>γ</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>= 1.741–1.784, birefringence = 0.020–0.032, 2V<sub>X</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>(calc.) 70°–84°. Ranges for unit-cell data obtained on 8 samples are: a = 8.948–8.985Å, b = 5.721-5.763Å, c = 10.184–10.240Å, β = 115°7.50′–115°25.89′ and volume = 473.02–478.43Å<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>3</sup>. The influx of significant amounts of detrital material into the offshore areas had largely ceased by latest Cretaceous time, was essentially absent in the early Cenozoic, but increased considerably in the Miocene, indicating a rejuvenation of the Appalachian source area.</p><p>Basin migration continued throughout the Cenozoic, and the Miocene and Eocene strata are used to illustrate the shifting of the loci of deposition. The distributions of the strata indicate that local to regional tectonic movements are responsible.
