The average standard errors of prediction for the equations range from 33.4% to 41.4%.  Peak discharge estimates determined by log-Pearson Type III analysis using data collected through the 1987 water year are reported for 275 streamflow-gaging stations. Ordinary least-squares multiple-regression techniques were used to divide the State into three regions and to identify a set of basin characteristics that help explain station-to- station variation in the log-Pearson estimates. Contributing drainage area, main-channel slope, and storage area were identified as suitable explanatory variables. Generalized least-square procedures, which include historical flow data and account for differences in the variance of flows at different gaging stations, spatial correlation among gaging station records, and variable lengths of station record were used to estimate the regression parameters. Weighted peak-discharge estimates computed as a function of the log-Pearson Type III and regression estimates are reported for each station. A method is provided to adjust regression estimates for ungaged sites by use of weighted and regression estimates for a gaged site located on the same stream. Limitations and shortcomings cited in an earlier report on the magnitude and frequency of floods in Ohio are addressed in this study. Geographic bias is no longer evident for the Maumee River basin of northwestern Ohio. No bias is found to be associated with the forested-area characteristic for the range used in the regression analysis (0.0 to 99.0%), nor is this characteristic significant in explaining peak discharges. Surface-mined area likewise is not significant in explaining peak discharges, and the regression equations are not biased when applied to basins having approximately 30% or less surface-mined area. Analyses of residuals indicate that the equations tend to overestimate flood-peak discharges for basins having approximately 30% or more surface-mined area. The sandstones tested are samples from the Marshall Sandstone and Grand River and Saginaw Formations, which are the principal bedrock aquifers in the Michigan basin. Sandstones ranging from poorly cemented to well cemented were selected to investigate matrix-controlled hydraulic properties as a function of degree of cementation. Hydraulic conductivities were measured for each sample over a range of effective stress (69 to 827 kilopascals); hydraulic conductivities for the sample suite range from 1.9 X 10 to 2.7 X 10 centimeters per second. This range of approximately seven orders in magnitude is indicative of local and regional differences in matrix-controlled hydraulic conductivities for Mississippian and Pennsylvanian bedrock aquifers Seasonal variations in streamflow and lake levels are directly related to seasonal variations in precipitation and evapotranspiration. Dissolved-solids concentrations in water from streams and lakes increase as stream discharge decreases and lake levels decline. Seven aquifers in glacial-outwash deposits and two bedrock aquifers were delineated in Codington and Grant Counties. The extent of the outwash aquifers ranges from 30 sq mi for the Antelope Valley aquifer to 860 sq mi for the Altamost aquifer. The average thickness of the glacial aquifers ranges from 20 ft for the Prairie Coteau to 63 ft for the Revillo. The Big Sioux and Antelope Valley aquifers are less than 10 ft below land surface. The Veblen, Prairie Coteau, and the Lonesome Lake aquifers are less than 380 ft below land surface. The Revillo and Altamost aquifers are less than 668 ft below land surface. Reported well yields are as much as 800 gal/min for the Big Sioux, Antelope Valley, and Prairie Coteau aquifers. Predominant ions are calcium and bicarbonate in water from the Big Sioux, Antelope Valley, Prairie Coteau, Veblen, Revillo, and Lonesome Lake aquifers. Sulfate also is predominant in water from the Veblen aquifer. Average dissolved-solids concentrations in water from the aquifers range 350 to 2,120 mg/L. Significant water-yielding units within the upper White River basin include the Eminence and Potosi Dolomites, the Roubidou Formation, the Gasconade Dolomite and the Van Buren Formation, outcrops of undifferentiated Paleozoic rocks, the Nacatoch Sand, and quaternary deposits. Water in the Quaternary deposits is the most heavily used, but areally, other units are significant sources of groundwater for domestic and rural use. The quality of groundwater withdrawn from the various units generally is suitable for most uses, although groundwater in the study area is typically very hard. Iron concentrations commonly exceed allowable limits. Yields from the different water-yielding units are highly variable. The Eminence and Potosi Dolomites are known to yield as much as 230 gal/min. Nearer the surface, the Gunter Sandstone Member of the Van Buren Formation yields as much as 500 gal/min. Above the Gunter Sandstone, the Roubidoux Formation yields as much as 450 gal/min to wells. In contrast to the high yields from these deeper units , the outcrops of Paleozoic rocks commonly yield less than 10 gal/min. The Quaternary deposits yield as much as 2,500 gal/min of very hard water. Elevated nitrate concentrations that exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency primary drinking-water standards occur in Marion County. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Other cooperating agencies include the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, the Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission,  and the University of Arkansas. The study was prompted by the growing concern about significant water level declines in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer north of the Arkansas River in eastern Arkansas. The declines are a result of large groundwater withdrawals, mainly for irrigation. After calibration, the flow model was used to simulate the effects of projected groundwater pumpage through the year 2050, based on estimates made by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service for pumpage scenarios with and without water conservation measures. Simulations of projected pumpage indicated that by the year 2050 water level declines would reduce the saturated thickness of the aquifer to less than 20 ft in large areas of eastern Arkansas. More than 26% of the active cells in the scenario without conservation had saturated thicknesses of 20 ft or less and mroe than 16% in the scenario with conservation. The principal areas where the saturated thickness is expected to reach these critical levels are in the Grand Prairie region and in two areas on the east and west sides of Crowleys Ridge. The study began in June 1986 with the selection of 20 shallow wells in Carroll County and 22 shallow wells in Guthrie County. These wells were sampled in the summer and fall of 1986 and 1987. Samples from the wells were analyzed for major ions, nutrients, trace elements, radiochemicals, nitrate, and pesticides.</p>\n<p>Median and mean nitrate concentrations were 95 and 11 milligrams per liter. About 60 percent of the samples had nitrate concentrations greater than 5.0 milligrams per liter. Detectable concentrations of a least one pesticide were in 27 percent of the samples. Atrazine, the most prevalent pesticide, was detected in 25 percent of the samples; alachlor was detected in 6 percent; and cyanazine was detected in 5 percent. Dicamba, metolachlor, trifluralin, and2,4-D were detected in 2 percent or less of the samples.</p>\n<p>In the summer and fall 1986,43 and 45 percent of the water samples had nitrate concentrations larger than 10 milligrams per liter, the maximum contaminant level for public drinking water specified by the State of Iowa; in the summer and fall 1987,41 and 55 percent of the samples had nitrate concentrations larger than the maximum contaminant level. In the summer and fall 1986,23 and 18 percent of the samples contained detectable concentrations of at least one pesticide; in the summer and fall 1987,21 and 47 percent of the samples contained detectable concentrations of at least one pesticide. Detection frequencies ofatrazine, alachlor, and cyanazine increased for samples collected in October 1987. Pesticides were more frequently detected along Brushy Creek, and the East Nishnabotna, Middle, North Raccoon, and South Raccoon Rivers. However, pesticides also were detected along the Middle Raccoon and West Nishnabotna Rivers. Detection frequencies were greatest (50 percent) for the East Nishnabotna River and Middle River alluvial settings.</p>\n<p>Increased nitrate concentrations generally were observed in the shallower wells and were larger than those previously reported for shallow municipal wells. Pesticide detection relative to well depth was inconsistent with the trend observed for nitrate. Pesticide detection frequencies were greater for wells that were 40 to 80 feet deep (about 40 percent) than for wells less that 40 feet deep (about 20 percent).</p>\n<p>Of the water samples with nitrate concentrations greater than or equal to 5.0 milligrams per liter, 33 percent had detectable pesticide concentrations. Conversely, for those samples with detectable pesticide concentrations, 76 percent had nitrate concentrations larger than or equal to 5.0 milligrams per liter and 67 percent were larger than or equal to 10 milligrams per liter. The median concentration of nitrate for samples containing at least one detectable pesticide was 15 milligrams per liter and was greater than the overall median nitrate concentration of 95 milligrams per liter.
