The factors that control the concentration of dissolved oxygen were also evaluated because of the importance of dissolved oxygen to the salmonid populations that migrate through the estuary. \r\n\r\nPhytoplankton blooms, primarily of diatoms, occurred in the lower estuary during August 1965 and 1966. No bloom occurred during 1964, but the presence of oxygen-supersaturated surface water in August 1963 indicates that a bloom did occur then. \r\n\r\nNutrients probably were not the primary factor controlling the timing of phytoplankton blooms. Ammonia ,and phosphate concentrations increased significantly downstream from the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle's Renton Treatment Plant outfall after the plant began operation in June 1965, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus were relatively high before operation of the Renton Treatment Plant and during nonbloom periods. The consistent coincidence of blooms with minimum fresh-water discharge and tidal exchange during August throughout the study period indicates that bloom timing probably was controlled mostly by hydrographic factors that determine retention time and stability of the surface-water layer. This control was demonstrated in part by a highly significant correlation of gross productivity with retention time (as indicated by fresh-water discharge) and vertical stability (as indicated by the difference between mean surface and mean bottom temperatures). The failure of a bloom to develop in 1964 is related to a minimum fresh-water discharge that was much greater than normal during that summer. Hydrographic factors are apparently important because, as shown by studies of other estuarine environments by other workers, phytoplankton production increases when the zone of vertical turbulent mixing is not markedly deeper than the compensation depth. \r\n\r\nPhytoplankton cells produced in the surface waters sink, thereby contributing oxidizable organic matter to the bottom saline-water wedge. The maximum BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) in this bottom wedge occurs in the same section of the estuary and ,at the same time as the maximum phytoplankton biomass (as indicated by chlorophyll a) and minimum DO (dissolved oxygen). Other sources of BOD occur in the estuary, and conditions of minimum discharge and tidal exchange assist in reducing DO. Nonetheless, the highly significant correlation of chlorophyll a with BOD throughout the summer indicates that respiration and decomposition of phytoplankton cells is dearly an important contributor of BOD. \r\n\r\nIncreases in the biomass and resultant B0D of blooms because of increased effluent nutrients presumably would further decrease the concentration of DO. This possible effect of effluent nutrients was evaluated by laboratory .bioassays and by a comparison of mean annual biomasses in the estuary. A green algal population in vitro did increase in response to added effluent nutrients; however, the available field data suggest that a 46-percent increase in effluent discharge between 1965 and 1966 did not increase the estuary's phytoplankton biomass significantly.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U. This part of the range is less deeply eroded than oth3r parts, and except for long, narrow valleys and cliffs near the shore, it has retained the general shape of the original volcanic dome. A 21/2-mile-wide dike zone of parallel and subparallel dikes along the crest is the remnant of the fissure zone of eruption. Outcrops are mostly permeable lava flows of the Koolau Volcanic Series, which are intruded by dikes inside the dike zone and are free of dikes outside it. The lava flows constitute main aquifers, and water bodies in them are called dike water inside the dike zone and basal water outside it. \r\n\r\nDikes, because they are less permeable than the lava flows they intrude, impound ground water, thereby controlling its movement, discharge, and storage. The top of the dike-impounded water is at an altitude of at least 1,000 feet near the south end of the Kahuku area. Dike water is discharged as leakage, the amount of which fluctuates in response to changes in storage, as flow into streams, where they intersect saturated rock, and as underflow to the basal-water body. \r\n\r\nBasal water occurs on either side of the dike zone, which forms both a structural and hydrologic boundary. It is artesian on the windward side wherever it underlies the coastal plain, and the altitude of water levels ranges from 7 to 22 feet. Leeward of the dike zone, basal water occurs only under water-table conditions because of the near absence of a coastal plain, and the altitude of water levels ranges from less than 1 foot to about 3 feet. \r\n\r\nThe quality of dike water is excellent except near the north end. where it is slightly contaminated by infiltration of irrigation water that contains as much as 1,200 mg/1 (milligrams per liter) chloride. Irrigation water is also a source of contamination of the basal-water body. The major contaminant, however, is sea water, which underlies the basal-water body. In the Kahuku subarea--where pumpage from the basal-water body is greatest--sea-water contamination is a major concern. Natural contamination by encroaching sea water extends more than 2 miles inland in the Waimea-Kawela subarea and generally precludes development of large quantities of basal water. \r\n\r\nAt low altitudes where the perennial flow is small, all streams are intermittent except Kaluanui and Kamananui. Some streams are perennial in their upper reaches because of persistent rainfall, and some are perennial in their middle reaches owing to the discharge of dike water; however, most flows are small in the lower reaches because most of the flow has infiltrated into the ground-water reservoir. For these reasons, streamflow cannot be economically developed and is not a reliable source of water supply. Average rainfall is about 240 mgd (million gallons per day). Of this amount, about 220 mgd is in the mountains. On .the basis of a rainfall input of 220 mgd and estimates of stream runoff and evapotranspiration, ground-water flow is estimated to be 85 mgd, a figure which compares favorably with estimates based on analyses of pumping-test data. Of this amount, an average of 30 mgd is discharged by wells and the remaining 55 mgd is eventually discharged to the sea by underflow or to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration. \r\n\r\nThe most promising areas for developing basal water are in the Hauula and Laie subareas, where draft is low and ground-water flow is high. The Waimea-Kawela subarea is not promising owing 'to low ground-water flow even though draft is low. Least promising for development is in the Kahuku subarea where an overdeveloped condition prevails in which draft for sugarcane irrigation exceeds the ground-water flow. The development of dike water is promising in the Waimea-Kawela subarea where ground-water flow greatly exceeds the draft.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. This program was designed to delineate water-bearing deposits of glacial-outwash sand and gravel, and to determine their water-yielding characteristics, particularly with regard to irrigation and industrial use. Investigations of this type will aid in planning the use and conservation of ground water for future agricultural and industrial growth in South Dakota.
\n
This report describes the part of the Big Sioux River drainage basin from Sioux Falls north to a U.S. Geological Survey gaging station 9M miles southeast of Brookings (see fig. 1).
\n
The drainage area, about 675 square miles, is in the southwestern part of the Coteau des Prairies section of the Central Lowland physiographic province, as defined by Flint (1955, p. 5). It includes the Big Sioux River valley in Moody and north-central Minnehaha Counties, and the uplands that drain into the valley, from Brookings, Lake, Moody, and Minnehaha Counties, South Dakota, and Pipestone and Lincoln Counties, Minnesota.
\n
This report is based on data from field and laboratory studies and from published and unpublished records of State and Federal agencies. The investigations included: (1) Delineating area of water-bearing glacial outwash deposits; (2) inventorying wells to locate areas of greatest ground-water potential; (3) examining samples from auger holes to define thickness, extent, and character of water-bearing deposits; (4) determining the altitudes of selected test holes and wells for use in preparing cross sections and watertable maps; (5) collecting and analyzing water samples to determine the chemical character of water; and (6) testing aquifers to determine the hydrologic properties of the water-bearing deposits.
\n
Data consisting of logs of wells and test holes, waterlevel measurements, chemical analyses of water, stream-runoff measurements, and determinations of the hydrologic properties of aquifers are contained in a separate report by Ellis and Adolphson (1968).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha311","usgsCitation":"Ellis, M.J., Adolphson, D.G., and West, R.E., 1969, Hydrology of a part of the Big Sioux drainage basin, eastern South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 311, Report: 5 p.; 1 Plate: 41.0 x 51.0 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha311.","productDescription":"Report: 5 p.; 1 Plate: 41.0 x 51.0 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":562,"text":"South Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":89976,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/311/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":89977,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/311/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":395411,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15684.htm"},{"id":186197,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/311/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"125000","country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Big Sioux drainage basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.37182617187499,\n              43.50872101129684\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.37182617187499,\n              44.3002644115815\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.833740234375,\n              44.3002644115815\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.833740234375,\n              43.50872101129684\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.37182617187499,\n              43.50872101129684\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a17e4b07f02db604747","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, Michael J.","contributorId":40360,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":278232,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Adolphson, Donald G.","contributorId":53872,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Adolphson","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":278233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"West, Robert E.","contributorId":10101,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"West","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":278231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Geodetic coordinates are required for each fixed and adjustable station. A preliminary inverse geodetic position computation is made for each observed line. Weights associated with each observed equation for direction, azimuth, and distance are applied in the formation of the normal equations in-the least squares adjustment. The number of normal equations that may be solved is twice the number of new stations and less than 150. When the normal equations are solved, shifts are produced at adjustable stations. The study was made primarily to determine the electromagnetic response of a deposit of massive sulphides found in exploratory drilling. Field measurements were made by the authors during December 1965.
\n
The area is near latitude 18°20'N., longitude 44°20'E, about 20 Km south of Bi'r Idirah (Fig. 1). Most of the area lies in a wadi bounded by low hills that reach elevations near 1250 meters and rise as ranch as 50 meters above the wadi floor. The gossan is exposed in the wadi and near the crests of a few hills in the southern part of the surveyed area. It is underlain by andesite porphyry and greenstone intruded by granitic rocks, and appears to have been displaced laterally by faulting in the central part of the area. An inclined test hole north of the offset cut massive pyrite between depths 98 and 141 feet, 250 and 260 feet, and between depths 299 and 351 feet. These water-level records: (1) provide an index to available ground-water supplies; (2) facilitate the prediction of trends in water levels that will indicate likely changes in storage; (3) aid in the prediction of the base flow of streams; (4) provide information for use in basic research; (5) provide long-time continuous records of fluctuations of water levels in representative wells; and (6) serve as a framework to which other types of hydrologic data my be related.\r\nPrior to 1956, measurements of water levels in observation wells in Oklahoma were included in water-supply papers published annually by the U.S. Geological Survey. Beginning with the 1956 calendar year, however, Geological Survey water-level reports will contain only records of a selected network of observation wells, and will be published at 5-year intervals. The first of this series, for the 1956-59 period was published in 1962.\r\n\r\nThis report has been prepared primarily to present water-level records of wells not included in the Federal network. However, for the sake of completeness it includes water-level records of Federal wells that either have been or will be published in water-supply papers since 1955. This report, which contains water-level records for the 2-year period (1967-68), is the fifth in a series presenting water-level records for all permanent observations wells in Oklahoma. The first report, published in 1963, contains water-level records for the 2-year period of (1961-62); the second report, published in 1964, contains water-level records for the 2-year period (1961-62); the third report, published in 1965, contains water-level records for the 2-year period (1963-64); and the fourth report contains water-level records for the 2-year period (1965-66).","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr69335","usgsCitation":"Bingham, R., 1969, Ground-water levels in observation wells in Oklahoma, 1967-68: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 69-335, 92 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr69335.","productDescription":"92 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":182463,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db69818a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bingham, R.H.","contributorId":37301,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bingham","given":"R.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257684,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The first of these reports covered floods on the Delaware River in the vicinity of Easton, Pennsylvania and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. The second covered a reach of the Schuylkill River from Conshohocken to Philadelphia. The third was for the Delaware River in the vicinity of Belvidere, New Jersey. The first and third reports were written by George M. Farlekas of the Trenton district, and the second was written by Arthur T. Alter of the Harrisburg district. Specific information as to the areal extent and contents of these studies can be obtained from the Delaware River Basin Commission, P.O. Box 360, Trenton, New Jersey.

This flood inundation study is part of an investigative program financed through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Delaware River Basin Commission. The data were interpreted to allow evaluation of the geologic structure prior to the planning and excavation of two proposed tunnel complexes, Ul2t and Ul2p.\r\n\r\nDensity values for each of six rock units were determined to allow a two-dimensional analysis of the gravity data along the above-mentioned profiles. The surficial rocks of Quaternary and Tertiary age and the Tertiary volcanic rocks have a weighted average density of 1.86 gm/cc. The density of the caprock at Rainier and Aqueduct Mesas ranges from 2.17 gm/cc at UEI2p #1 to 2.27 gm/cc at UEI2t #1. The Gold Meadows stock and the associated Precambrian quartzite have an arithmetic average density of 2.60 gm/cc for all samples measured. The middle Paleozoic dolomite in Area 12 has an arithmetic average density of 2.75 gm/cc. The clastic rocks of Paleozoic age have an arithmetic average density of 2.60 gm/cc. \r\n\r\nInterpretation of the residual gravity data indicates a maximum thickness of about 2,800 feet for all Tertiary volcanic rocks. A normal fault striking N. 30 ? E. disrupts the pre-Cenozoic surface at UEI2p #1 and 0.4 mile east of UEI2t #1. The throw within rock of Paleozoic age is about 400-500 feet. Another normal fault that strikes about N. 20 ? E. is located about 1.5 miles east of UEI2p #1. The throw of this fault is at least 1,100 feet in rocks of pre-Cenozoic age.\r\n\r\nElevation contours representing the pre-Cenozoic surface in Area 12 show a maximum relief of about 2,000 feet.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr69309","usgsCitation":"Wahl, R.R., 1969, An analysis of gravity data in Area 12, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 69-309, Report: iii, 23 p.; 3 Plates: 42.76 x 29.41 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr69309.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 23 p.; 3 Plates: 42.76 x 29.41 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":493049,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8426.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":45377,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0309/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45376,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0309/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45375,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0309/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45374,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0309/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147470,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0309/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Area 12, Nevada Test Site","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -116.25,\n 37.265\n ],\n [\n -116.25,\n 37.164\n ],\n [\n -116.083,\n 37.164\n ],\n [\n -116.083,\n 37.265\n ],\n [\n -116.25,\n 37.265\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685a2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wahl, R.
