Locations of these sites are shown on figures 7A and 7B. Also included are data for 37 crest-stage partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites not in the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous measurements. Significant water-yielding units within the upper White River basin include the Eminence and Potosi Dolomites, the Roubidou Formation, the Gasconade Dolomite and the Van Buren Formation, outcrops of undifferentiated Paleozoic rocks, the Nacatoch Sand, and quaternary deposits. Water in the Quaternary deposits is the most heavily used, but areally, other units are significant sources of groundwater for domestic and rural use. The quality of groundwater withdrawn from the various units generally is suitable for most uses, although groundwater in the study area is typically very hard. Iron concentrations commonly exceed allowable limits. Yields from the different water-yielding units are highly variable. The Eminence and Potosi Dolomites are known to yield as much as 230 gal/min. Nearer the surface, the Gunter Sandstone Member of the Van Buren Formation yields as much as 500 gal/min. Above the Gunter Sandstone, the Roubidoux Formation yields as much as 450 gal/min to wells. In contrast to the high yields from these deeper units , the outcrops of Paleozoic rocks commonly yield less than 10 gal/min. The Quaternary deposits yield as much as 2,500 gal/min of very hard water. Elevated nitrate concentrations that exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency primary drinking-water standards occur in Marion County. In addition, saline water is present in the Quaternary deposits near Bald Knob and Cord, Arkansas. Seasonal variations in streamflow and lake levels are directly related to seasonal variations in precipitation and evapotranspiration. Dissolved-solids concentrations in water from streams and lakes increase as stream discharge decreases and lake levels decline. Seven aquifers in glacial-outwash deposits and two bedrock aquifers were delineated in Codington and Grant Counties. The extent of the outwash aquifers ranges from 30 sq mi for the Antelope Valley aquifer to 860 sq mi for the Altamost aquifer. The average thickness of the glacial aquifers ranges from 20 ft for the Prairie Coteau to 63 ft for the Revillo. The Big Sioux and Antelope Valley aquifers are less than 10 ft below land surface. The Veblen, Prairie Coteau, and the Lonesome Lake aquifers are less than 380 ft below land surface. The Revillo and Altamost aquifers are less than 668 ft below land surface. Reported well yields are as much as 800 gal/min for the Big Sioux, Antelope Valley, and Prairie Coteau aquifers. Predominant ions are calcium and bicarbonate in water from the Big Sioux, Antelope Valley, Prairie Coteau, Veblen, Revillo, and Lonesome Lake aquifers. Sulfate also is predominant in water from the Veblen aquifer. Average dissolved-solids concentrations in water from the aquifers range 350 to 2,120 mg/L. The two bedrock aquifers delineated are the Dakota and granite wash. The water level has declined 10 ft from 1958 to 1985. Predominant ions in water from the Dakota and granite wash aquifers are sodium and sulfate. These bedrock units and glacial deposits have been designated for study as part of the U.S. Geological Survey 's Regional Aquifer System Analysis program, a nationwide program to assess the regional hydrology, geology and water quality of the Nation 's most important aquifers. The purpose of the study is to define the hydrology, geochemistry, and geologic framework of the aquifer system within the Silurian and Devonian rocks and glacial deposits, with emphasis on describing the groundwater flow patterns and characterizing the water quality. The study, which began in 1988 , is expected to be completed in 1993. In 1980, the aquifers in the study area supplied more than 280 million gallons of water/day to industry, agriculture, and a population of more than 6.3 million people. With a projected future population growth to 7.1 million in 1990, and with intensified agricultural and industrial uses, water withdrawals from these bedrock and glacial aquifers are expected to be increased. The most significant groundwater problems in the study area result from the pronounced areal differences in availability and quality of the groundwater. These differences are related to the lateral discontinuity of many of the glacial deposits and to variations in secondary permeability of the bedrock aquifers associated with patterns of fracturing. Planned activities of the study include compilation of available geohydrologic and water quality data, such as groundwater levels, geohydrologic properties of aquifers, chemical analyses, land use and water use data, and ancillary data such as digital satellite images. Additional geohydrologic and water quality data may be collected from existing wells or wells that may be drilled for this study. A computerized, geographic information system will be used as a data base management tool and for spatial analysis and presentation of the data. A digital computer model will be developed to study the regional groundwater flow system and to investigate the effects of development on the aquifer system.
