These map horizon compilations were created to aid in petroleum system modeling and related studies. Topography/bathymetry is extracted from a recent Arctic compilation of global onshore DEM and satellite altimetry and ship soundings offshore. The Lower Cretaceous Unconformity (LCU), the top of the Triassic Shublik Formation, and the pre-Carboniferous acoustic basement horizon grids are created from numerous seismic studies, drill hole information, and interpolation. These horizons were selected because they mark critical times in the geologic evolution of the region as it relates to petroleum. The various horizons clearly show the major tectonic elements of this region including the Brooks Range, Colville Trough, Barrow Arch, Hanna Trough, Chukchi Platform, Nuwuk Basin, Kaktovik Basin, and Canada Basin. The gridded data are available in a variety of data formats for use in regional studies.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr03230","usgsCitation":"Saltus, R.W., and Bird, K.J., 2003, Digital depth horizon compilations of the Alaskan North Slope and adjacent Arctic regions (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-230, Report: 21 p.; Readme; Data Directory, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03230.","productDescription":"Report: 21 p.; Readme; Data Directory","costCenters":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":255,"text":"Energy Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":179504,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":408127,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_54950.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":4425,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-230/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Arctic region, North Slope","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -171,\n              66\n            ],\n            [\n              -135,\n              66\n            ],\n            [\n              -135,\n              73\n            ],\n            [\n              -171,\n              73\n            ],\n            [\n              -171,\n              66\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d4e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Saltus, Richard W. saltus@usgs.gov","contributorId":777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Saltus","given":"Richard","email":"saltus@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":243494,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bird, Kenneth J. kbird@usgs.gov","contributorId":1015,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bird","given":"Kenneth","email":"kbird@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":255,"text":"Energy Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":243495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Reconnaissance geochemical data on unmineralized igneous and sedimentary host rocks, and mineralized rocks are also presented and are accompanied by a brief analysis of geochemical signatures typical of each occurrence. Consistent with the stated goal of the geophysical survey; to stimulate exploration for polymetallic massive sulfides similar to the Greens Creek deposit, the majority of the described occurrences are possible members of a belt of Late Triassic mineral deposits that are distributed along the eastern edge of the Alexander terrane in southeastern Alaska. Many of the described occurrences in the Duncan Canal-Zarembo Island area share similarities to the Greens Creek deposit. When considered as a whole, the geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of these occurrences help to define a transitional portion of the Late Triassic mineral belt where changes in shallow to deeper water stratigraphy and arc-like to rift-related igneous rocks are accompanied by concomitant changes in the size, morphology, and metal endowments of the mineral occurrences. As a result, Late Triassic mineral occurrences in the area appear as: 1) small, discontinuous, structurally controlled stockwork veins in mafic volcanic rocks, 2) small, irregular replacements and stratabound horizons of diagenetic semi-massive sulfides in dolostones and calcareous shales, and as 3) larger, recognizably stratiform accumulations of baritic, semi-massive to massive sulfides at and near the contact between mafic volcanic rocks and overlying sedimentary rocks. Empirical exploration guidelines for Greens Creek-like polymetallic massive sulfide deposits in southeastern Alaska include: 1) a Late Triassic volcano-sedimentary host sequence exhibiting evidence of succession from tectonic activity to quiescence (such as conglomeratic and/or mafic volcaniclastics or flows overlain by platform carbonate or shale sequences), 2) presence and proximity to Late Triassic mafic-ultramafic intrusions, 3) presence of quartz-carbonate-fuchsite altered ultramafic bodies, 4) pyritic, graphitic shales, 5) presence of barite and/or iron-manganese-rich carbonates, 6) low-iron sphalerite and antimony-rich sulfosalt minerals, 7) a geochemical signature including Fe-Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au-Sb-Hg-As-Cd-Ba-Mn-Mo-Tl and the ultramafic-related suite of elements Ni-Cr-Co, and 8) a geophysical signature characterized by the coincidence of a sharp resistivity contrast with evidence for buried intrusive rocks. Critical factors for the development of larger, economic orebodies are significant thickness of pyritic, graphitic shale indicating that a locally reducing sedimentary setting was established and that accumulation of an insulating shale blank occurred, and proximity to Late Triassic aged hypabyssal mafic-ultramafic intrusive rocks.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03154","usgsCitation":"Taylor, C.D., 2003, Descriptions of mineral occurrences and interpretation of mineralized rock geochemical data in the Stikine geophysical survey area, Southeastern Alaska (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-154, 51 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03154.","productDescription":"51 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179685,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4607,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-154/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa9e4b07f02db668052","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, Cliff D. 0000-0001-6376-6298 ctaylor@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6376-6298","contributorId":1283,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"Cliff","email":"ctaylor@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":242390,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In addition, marine fish data from a previous project that focused on forage fishes and marine predators during 1999 and 2000 in Glacier Bay proper were compiled for this study. Sampling was conducted with modified herring and Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawls, a plumb staff beam trawl, and beach seines. Species lists of relative abundance were generated for nearshore fishes in all parks, and for demersal and pelagic fishes in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. With a total sampling effort of 531 sets, we captured 100 species in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, 31 species in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, 23 species in Sitka National Historical Park, and 11 species in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. We estimated that between 59 and 85 percent of the total marine fish species present were sampled by us in the various habitat-park units. We also combined these data with historical records and prepared an annotated species list of 160 marine and estuarine fishes known to occur in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Shannon-Wiener diversity index and catch per unit effort were used to assess the effects of depth and latitude (distance from tidewater glaciers) on marine fish community ecology in Glacier Bay proper. Our findings suggest that demersal fishes are more abundant and diverse with increased distance from tidewater glaciers, and that pelagic fishes sampled deeper than 50 m are more abundant in areas closer to tidewater glaciers.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Arimitsu, M.L., Litzow, M.A., Piatt, J.F., Robards, M.D., Abookire, A.A., and Drew, G.S., 2003, Inventory of marine and estuarine fishes in southeast and central Alaska National Parks: Final Report, 79 p.","productDescription":"79 p.","numberOfPages":"79","costCenters":[{"id":106,"text":"Alaska Biological Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128136,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":341282,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/564537"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -140.99853515625,\n              56.401744392758964\n            ],\n            [\n              -132.16552734375,\n              56.401744392758964\n            ],\n            [\n              -132.16552734375,\n              60.31606836555203\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.99853515625,\n              60.31606836555203\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.99853515625,\n              56.401744392758964\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","publicComments":"National Park Service, Alaska Region Inventory and Monitoring Program Final Report","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e478fe4b07f02db48a48d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Arimitsu, Mayumi L. 0000-0001-6982-2238 marimitsu@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6982-2238","contributorId":140501,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Arimitsu","given":"Mayumi","email":"marimitsu@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":296657,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Litzow, Michael A.","contributorId":8789,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Litzow","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":296656,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Piatt, John F. 0000-0002-4417-5748 jpiatt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4417-5748","contributorId":3025,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Piatt","given":"John","email":"jpiatt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":296659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Robards, Martin D.","contributorId":40148,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Robards","given":"Martin","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":296658,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Abookire, Alisa A.","contributorId":107224,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abookire","given":"Alisa","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":296661,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Drew, Gary S. 0000-0002-6789-0891 gdrew@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6789-0891","contributorId":3311,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drew","given":"Gary","email":"gdrew@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":296660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

These strata are part of a composite total petroleum system involving hydrocarbons expelled from three stratigraphic intervals of source rocks, the Lower Cretaceous gamma-ray zone (GRZ), the Lower Jurassic Kingak Shale, and the Triassic Shublik Formation. The potential for undiscovered oil and gas resources in the Brookian megasequence in NPRA was assessed by defining five plays (assessment units), one in the topset seismic facies and four in the bottomset-clinoform seismic facies.\r\n\r\nThe Brookian Topset Play is estimated to contain between 60 (95-percent probability) and 465 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 239 million barrels. The Brookian Topset Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 679 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 192 billion cubic feet.\r\n\r\nThe Brookian Clinoform North Play, which extends across northern NPRA, is estimated to contain between 538 (95-percent probability) and 2,257 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 1,306 million barrels. The Brookian Clinoform North Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 1,969 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 674 billion cubic feet.\r\n\r\nThe Brookian Clinoform Central Play, which extends across central NPRA, is estimated to contain between 299 (95-percent probability) and 1,849 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 973 million barrels. The Brookian Clinoform Central Play is estimated to contain between 1,806 (95-percent probability) and 10,076 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 5,405 billion cubic feet.\r\n\r\nThe Brookian Clinoform South-Shallow Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 1,254 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 508 million barrels. The Brookian Clinoform South-Shallow Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 5,809 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 2,405 billion cubic feet.\r\n\r\nThe Brookian Clinoform South-Deep Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 8,796 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 3,788 billion cubic feet. No technically recoverable oil is assessed in the Brookian Clinoform South-Deep Play, as it lies at depths that are entirely in the gas window. \r\n\r\nAmong the Brookian stratigraphic plays in NPRA, the Brookian Clinoform North Play and the Brookian Clinoform Central Play are most likely to be objectives of exploration activity in the near-term future because they are estimated to contain multiple oil accumulations larger than 128 million barrels technically recoverable oil, and because some of those accumulations may occur near existing infrastructure in the eastern parts of the plays. These strata are part of a composite total petroleum system involving hydrocarbons expelled from source rocks in three stratigraphic intervals, the Lower Jurassic part of the Kingak Shale, the Triassic Shublik Formation, and the Lower Cretaceous gamma-ray zone (GRZ) and associated strata. The potential for undiscovered oil and gas resources in the Beaufortian megasequence in NPRA was assessed by defining eight plays (assessment units), two in lower Cretaceous (Neocomian) topset seismic facies, four in Upper Jurassic topset seismic facies, one in Lower Jurassic topset seismic facies, and one in Jurassic through lower Cretaceous (Neocomian) clinoform seismic facies.\r\n\r\nThe Beaufortian Cretaceous Topset North Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 239 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 103 million barrels. The Beaufortian Cretaceous Topset North Play is estimated to contain between 0 (95-percent probability) and 1,162 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 405 billion cubic feet. The Beaufortian Cretaceous Topset South Play is estimated to contain between 635 (95-percent probability) and 4,004 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 2,130 billion cubic feet. No technically recoverable oil is assessed in the Beaufortian Cretaceous Topset South Play, as it lies at depths that are entirely in the gas window.\r\n\r\nThe Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Northeast Play is estimated to contain between 2,744 (95-percent probability) and 8,086 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 5,176 million barrels. No technically recoverable gas is assessed in the Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Northeast Play. The Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Northwest Play is estimated to contain between 733 (95-percent probability) and 3,312 (5-percent probability) million barrels of technically recoverable oil, with a mean (expected value) of 1,859 million barrels. No technically recoverable gas is assessed in the Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Northwest Play.\r\n\r\nThe Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Southeast Play is estimated to contain between 2,053 (95-percent probability) and 9,030 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 5,137 billion cubic feet. No technically recoverable oil is assessed in the Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Southeast Play, as it lies at depths that are entirely in the gas window. The Beaufortian Upper Jurassic Topset Southwest Play is estimated to contain between 2,008 (95-percent probability) and 9,265 (5-percent probability) billion cubic feet of technically recoverable, nonassociated natural gas, with a mean (expected value) of 5,220 billion cubic feet. These data are presented here as a data compilation with minimal interpretation or discussion. Further analyses of the data will be presented elsewhere. The study area has been mined for placer gold for over a century and is currently experiencing renewed mineral exploration activity. The results for the analysis of 40 inorganic elements are reported for grayling muscle (fillet) tissue, liver tissue, and stomach contents from 34 individuals caught at 11 sites within the watershed. The 11 sites were classified as occurring within the following lithologies: metavolcanic (7 sites), metasedimentary (3 sites), and granitic intrusion (1 site). This information (along with fish tissue stable isotope data) is critical in the assessment of the influence of regional lithology on the fish chemical composition, especially the trace metal content. We report the nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur stable isotope composition of muscle samples. Nitrogen isotopes appear homogeneous (d15N = 7.6 to 9.7 permil) whereas carbon and sulfur isotope compositions of the same samples span a range from d 13C = ?33.1 to ?25.8 permil, and d 34S = ?8.4 to 8.2 permil. Stomach content material was examined for the occurrence and frequency of macroinvertebrate composition and diversity in three individual fish. Results showed a high degree of diversity with 9 to 15 invertebrate taxa; both aquatic and terrestrial forms were represented.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr0357","usgsCitation":"Crock, J., Seal, R., Gough, L.P., and Weber-Scannell, P., 2003, Results of elemental and stable isotopic measurements, and dietary composition of Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) collected in 2000 and 2001 from the Fortymile River Watershed, Alaska (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-57, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0357.","productDescription":"28 p.","costCenters":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":178248,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4482,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-057/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db6246e4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crock, J.G.","contributorId":58236,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crock","given":"J.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243703,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Seal, R.R. The study area lies between 61° 30’ and 63° 45’ N. latitude and 145° and 151° W. longitude. This data set includes 408 gravity stations. These data, combined with the pre-existing 3,286 stations, brings the total data in this area to 3,694 gravity stations. Principal facts for the 408 new gravity stations and the 15 gravity base stations used for control are listed in this report.
\n
\n
During the summer of 1999, a gravity survey was conducted in the western Talkeetna Mountains. Measurements at 55 gravity stations were made. One gravity base station was used for control for this survey. This base station, STEP, is located at the Stephan Lake Lodge on Stephan Lake. The observed gravity of this station was calculated based on an indirect tie to base station ANCL in Anchorage. The temporary base used to tie between STEP and ANCL was REGL in Anchorage.
\n
\n
During the summer of 2000, a gravity survey was conducted in the western Talkeetna Mountains. Measurements at 56 gravity stations were made. One gravity base station was used for control for this survey. This base station, GRHS, is located at the Gracious House Lodge on the Denali Highway. The observed gravity of this station was calculated based on multiple ties to base stations D87, and D57 along the Denali Highway.
\n
\n
During the summer of 2001, a gravity survey was conducted in the western Talkeetna Mountains. Measurements at 90 gravity stations were made. One gravity base station was used for control for this survey. This base station, HLML, is located at the High Lake Lodge. The observed gravity of this station was calculated based on multiple ties to base stations ANCU in Anchorage, PALH in Palmer, WASA in Wasilla, and TLKM in Talkeetna.
\n
\n
Also during the summer of 2001, a gravity survey was conducted in the vicinity of Tangle Lakes. Measurements at 86 gravity stations were made. The Tangle Lakes area is located about 25 km west of Paxson and north of the Denali Highway. One gravity base station was used for control for this survey. This base station, TLIN, is located at the Tangle Lakes Inn. The observed gravity of this station was calculated based on multiple ties to base stations ANCU in Anchorage, PALH in Palmer, BD27 in Gulkana, B-07 on the Richardson Highway, and base stations D42, and D57 along the Denali Highway. During the summer of 2002, measurements at an additional 107 gravity stations were made in the vicinity of Tangle Lakes. Base station TLIN at the Tangle Lakes Inn was again used for control. Additional ties to base stations ANCU and B-07 were made.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr0327","usgsCitation":"Morin, R.L., and Glen, J., 2003, Principal facts for 408 gravity stations in the vicinity of the Talkeetna Mountains, south-central Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-27, Report: 19 p.; 2 Figures: 11.0 x 8.5 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0327.","productDescription":"Report: 19 p.; 2 Figures: 11.0 x 8.5 inches","numberOfPages":"21","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":179310,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":285256,"rank":2,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0027/data.ascii"},{"id":285255,"rank":3,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0027/data.xls"},{"id":285252,"rank":4,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0027/pdf/of03-27.pdf"},{"id":4498,"rank":7,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0027/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":285254,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0027/pdf/fig2.pdf","text":"Figure 2"},{"id":285253,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0027/pdf/fig1.pdf","text":"Figure 1"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Talkeetna Mountains","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -151.0,61.5 ], [ -151.0,63.75 ], [ -145.0,63.75 ], [ -145.0,61.5 ], [ -151.0,61.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668ca2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Morin, Robert L.","contributorId":82671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morin","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243751,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Glen, Jonathan M. Haplotypes formed a star phylogeny indicative of a recent expansion of populations. Values of nucleotide and haplotype diversity were low continentwide but were greatest in the central part of the continent and lowest in peripheral populations. Despite low mitochondrial diversity, moose exhibited a high degree of differentiation regionally, which was not explained by isolation by distance. Our data indicate a pattern of colonization consistent with a large central population that supplied founders to peripheral populations (other than Alaska), perhaps through rare, long-distance dispersal events (leptokurtic dispersal) rather than mass dispersal by a stepping-stone model. The colonization scenario does not account for the low haplotype diversity observed in Alaska, which may be derived from a postcolonization bottleneck. Establishment of peripheral populations by leptokurtic dispersal and subsequent local adaptation may have been sufficient for development of morphological differentiation among extant subspecies.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Mammalogists","publisherLocation":"Provo, Sea otter distribution is mostly limited to the Lower Bay, south of \nSandy Cove, and is not continuous within that area. Concentrations occur in the vicinity \nof Sita Reef and Boulder Island and between Pt. Carolus and Rush Pt. on the west side of \nthe Bay, although there have been occasional sightings north of Sandy Cove (Figure 1). \nLarge portions of the Bay remain unoccupied by sea otters, but recolonization is \noccurring rapidly.
\n
\n
Most prey recovered by sea otters in Glacier Bay are ecologically, commercially, or \nsocially important species. In 2002 sea otter diet consisted of 35% clam, 26% mussel, \n3% crab, 3.0% snail, 2% starfish, 11% urchins, 2% other, and 20% unidentified. \nDominant clam species include the butter clam, Saxidomus gigantea, the Greenland \ncockle, Serripes groenlandicus, and the littleneck clam, Protothaca staminea. Urchins \nare primarily green urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, and the mussel is \nModiolus modiolus. Crabs observed in 2002 include the Dungeness, Cancer magister, \nthe kelp crab Pugettia gracilis, and the helmet crab, Telmessus cherigonus. Although we \ncharacterize diet at broad geographic scales, we have previously found diet to vary \nbetween sites separated by as little as several hundred meters. Dietary variation among \nand within sites can reflect differences in prey availability as well as individual \nspecialization.
\n
\n
We estimated species composition, density, biomass, and sizes of subtidal clams, urchins, \nand mussels at 13 sites in Glacier Bay and 5 sites in nearby Port Althorp, where sea otters \nhave been present for at least 20 years. All sites were selected based on the presence of \nabundant clam siphons and the absence of sea otters (Glacier Bay) or abundant shell litter \nand the presence of sea otters (Port Althorp). Glacier Bay sites were selected to achieve a \nbroad geographic sample of dense subtidal clam beds within Glacier Bay prior to \noccupation and foraging by sea otters. Port Althorp sites were chosen to achieve a \nrepresentative sample of subtidal clam beds already under prolonged foraging pressure by \nsea otters. There was no direct evidence of otter foraging at any of our Glacier Bay \nsampling sites.
\n
\n
In Glacier Bay, we sampled 15,338 bivalves (average of 1,180/site) representing 14 \nspecies of clam, 2 species of mussel, and a single scallop and we sampled 6,917 urchins \n(average of 513/site). In Port Althorp, we sampled 1,034 bivalves (average of 207/site) \nrepresenting 14 species of clam. We found only 5 urchins, all S. droebachiensis. Mean \ndensities and biomass of all subtidal clams were significantly greater in Glacier Bay (59.2 \nand 99/0.25m2\n compared to Port Althorp (10.3 and 5.8/0.25m2\n (p<0.002 for both).
\n
\n
Our contrasts of subtidal clam populations between Glacier Bay and Port Althorp suggest \nthat clam densities will likely decline by about a factor of six and that clam biomass \nestimates will decline by more than a factor of ten. Numerically dominant species of \nclams, P. staminea, S. gigantea, Macoma sp. and Mya sp. were all significantly greater in \ndensity and biomass in Glacier Bay, while C. nutalli density was low but significantly \nhigher in Port Althorp. Subtidal clam species diversity was significantly greater in Port \nAlthorp compared to Glacier Bay, although this may simply reflect habitat differences. \nSea urchin densities were high in Glacier Bay, while in Port Althorp urchins were \nvirtually absent.
\n
\n
Sea otters are now well established in limited areas of the lower portions of Glacier Bay. \nIt is likely that distribution and numbers of sea otters will continue to increase in Glacier \nBay in the near future. Glacier Bay supports large and diverse populations of clams that \nare largely unexploited by sea otters at present. It is predictable that the density and sizes \nof clam populations will decline in response to otter predation. This will result in fewer \nopportunities for human harvest, but will also trigger ecosystem level changes, as prey \nfor other predators, such as octopus, sea stars, fishes, birds and mammals are modified. \nSea otters will also modify benthic habitats through excavation of sediments required to \nextract burrowing infauna such as clams. Effects of sediment disturbance by foraging sea \notters are not understood. Glacier Bay also supports large populations of other preferred \nsea otter prey, such as king (Paralithodes sp.), tanner (Chionoecetes sp.) and dungeness \n(Cancer magister) crabs and green sea urchins (S. droebachiensis). As the colonization \nof Park waters by sea otters continues, it is also likely that dramatic changes will occur in \nthe species composition, abundance, and size class distribution of many components of \nthe nearshore marine ecosystem. Many of the changes will occur as a direct result of \npredation by sea otters. Major controls on valley-bottom morphology are regional tectonics, large landslides, and outsized floods (floods with return periods greater than 1000 yrs), which include the late Holocene Outhouse Flood and several Quaternary landslide dam failures. Floods with a return period on the order of 100 yrs, including historical floods in 1996, 1964, and 1861, contribute to fan building and flood plain formation only within the resistant framework established by the major controls. Key processes in the formation of channel features, in particular the 153 islands and 23 large rapids, include long-term bedrock erosion, outsized floods, and century-scale floods. Historical analysis of channel conditions since 1911 indicates that the largest islands, which are cored by outsized-flood deposits, locally control channel location, although their margins are substantially modified during annual- to century-scale floods. Islands cored by bedrock have changed little. Islands formed by annual- to century-scale floods are more susceptible to dynamic interactions between tributary sediment inputs, mainstem flow hydraulics, and perhaps riparian vegetation. Temporal patterns of island change in response to the sequence of 20th century flooding indicate that many islands accreted sediment during annual- to decadal-scale floods, but eroded during larger century-scale floods. There is, however, no clear trend of long-term changes in patterns of island growth, movement, or erosion either spatially or temporally within the lower Deschutes River.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"A peculiar river: Geology, geomorphology, and hydrology of the Deschutes River, Oregon","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.1029/007WS08","usgsCitation":"Curran, J.H., and O’Conner, J.E., 2003, Formation and evolution of valley-bottom and channel features, Lower Deschutes River, Oregon, chap. 5 of A peculiar river: Geology, geomorphology, and hydrology of the Deschutes River, Oregon: AGU Water Science and Application Series, p. 95-119, https://doi.org/10.1029/007WS08.","productDescription":"25 p.","startPage":"95","endPage":"119","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":334520,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Lower Deschutes River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.48544311523436,\n              44.8490538825394\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.48544311523436,\n              45.71001523943372\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.498046875,\n              45.71001523943372\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.498046875,\n              44.8490538825394\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.48544311523436,\n              44.8490538825394\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2013-03-19","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5891b0aae4b072a7ac1298fb","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"O’Conner, Jim E.","contributorId":119268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O’Conner","given":"Jim","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":662147,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Grant, Gordon E.","contributorId":30881,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Grant","given":"Gordon E.","affiliations":[{"id":12647,"text":"U.S. Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":662148,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Curran, Janet H. 0000-0002-3899-6275 jcurran@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3899-6275","contributorId":690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curran","given":"Janet","email":"jcurran@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":120,"text":"Alaska Science Center Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":662145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"O’Conner, Jim E.","contributorId":119268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O’Conner","given":"Jim","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":662146,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The magnitude 7.9 earthquake on the Denali fault in November 2002 was remarkably consistent with the design earthquake and fault displacement postulated for the Denali crossing of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline route. Gold-quartz veins and dikes, linked to ridge subduction by geochronological and relative timing evidence, provide a record of brittle deformation during and after passage of the ridge. The gold-quartz veins are typically hosted by faults, and their regional extent indicates there was widespread deformation of the forearc above the slab window at the time of ridge subduction. Considerable variability in the strain pattern was associated with the slab window and the trailing plate. A diffuse network of dextral, sinistral, and normal faults hosted small lode-gold deposits (<50,000 oz) in south-central Alaska, whereas crustal-scale dextral faults in southeastern Alaska are spatially associated with large gold deposits (up to 800,000 oz).

We interpret the gold-quartz veins as having formed above an eastward-migrating slab window, where the forearc crust responded to the diminishing influence of the forward subducting plate, the increasing influence of the trailing plate, and the thermal pulse and decreased basal friction from the slab window. In addition, extensional deformation of the forearc resulted from the diverging motions of the two oceanic plates at the margins of the slab window. Factors that complicate interpretations of fault kinematics and near-trench dike orientations include a change in plate motions at ca. 52 Ma, northward translation of the accretionary complex, oroclinal bending of the south-central Alaska margin, and subduction of transform segments. We find the pattern of syn-ridge subduction faulting in southern Alaska is remarkably similar to brittle faults near the Chile triple junction and to earthquake focal mechanisms in the Woodlark basin - the two modern sites of ridge subduction. Therefore, extensional and strike-slip deformation above slab windows may be a common occurrence.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geology of a transpressional orogen developed during ridge-trench interaction along the North Pacific margin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0-8137-2371-X.119","usgsCitation":"Haeussler, P.J., Bradley, D., and Goldfarb, R.J., 2003, Brittle deformation along the Gulf of Alaska margin in response to Paleocene-Eocene triple junction migration, chap. of Geology of a transpressional orogen developed during ridge-trench interaction along the North Pacific margin, v. 371, p. 119-140, https://doi.org/10.1130/0-8137-2371-X.119.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"119","endPage":"140","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":336366,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -163,\n              53\n            ],\n            [\n              -135,\n              53\n            ],\n            [\n              -135,\n              61\n            ],\n            [\n              -163,\n              61\n            ],\n            [\n              -163,\n              53\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"371","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58b69a43e4b01ccd54ff3fc6","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Sisson, V.B.","contributorId":101104,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sisson","given":"V.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":887463,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Roeske, Sarah M.","contributorId":141228,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Roeske","given":"Sarah","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":13721,"text":"Department of Geology, University of Califorina Davis","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887464,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Pavlis, Terry L.","contributorId":52682,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pavlis","given":"Terry","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":887465,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3}],"authors":[{"text":"Haeussler, Peter J. 0000-0002-1503-6247 pheuslr@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1503-6247","contributorId":503,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haeussler","given":"Peter","email":"pheuslr@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":673882,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bradley, Dwight 0000-0001-9116-5289 bradleyorchard2@gmail.com","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9116-5289","contributorId":2358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bradley","given":"Dwight","email":"bradleyorchard2@gmail.com","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":673883,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Goldfarb, Richard J. goldfarb@usgs.gov","contributorId":1205,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldfarb","given":"Richard","email":"goldfarb@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":673884,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
