In the four experiment-A solutions, nitric acid provided nitrate-ion concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 10.0 mg/L and that had pH values ranging from 3.8 to 5.0. In the five experiment-B solutions, sodium nitrate provided nitrate-ion concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 mg/L. The pH was adjusted to about 4.5 for each of the solutions by addition of sulfuric acid. In the four experiment-C solutions, nitric acid provided nitrate-ion concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 mg/L. Major cation and anion concentrations were added to each solution to simulate natural deposition. Aliquots were removed from the 13 original solutions and analyzed by ion chromatography about once a week for 100 days to determine if any changes occurred in nitrate-ion concentrations throughout the study period. No substantial changes were observed in the nitrate-ion concentrations in solutions that had initial concentrations below 4.0 mg/L in experiments A and B, although most of the measured nitrate-ion concentrations for the 100-day study were below the initial concentrations. In experiment C, changes in nitrate-ion concentrations were much more pronounced; the measured nitrate-ion concentrations for the study period were less than the initial concentrations for 62 of the 67 analyses. Reduction of river discharge will affect the upstream extent of saltwater intrusion in the rivers; however, under certain reduced low-flow discharges, the estimated change in upstream extent of saltwater intrusion is on the order of several tenths of a mile and frequently is within the range of predicted error. Data on flow, tides, and salinity describe the physical characteristics of the Weeki Wachee, Crystal, and Withlacoochee River systems. Vertical and longitudinal salinity profiles indicate that salinity of the rivers increases downstream and varies substantially at any given location. The Weeki Wachee River system is the best mixed of the three. The Crystal River system exhibited the next best mixed system, and the Withlacoochee River system exhibited the most variation in its salinity regime. The daily maximum upstream extent of salinity intrusion is described by multiple linear-regression analysis based on daily mean streamflow of each river and high-tide stage of the gulf. Sediment transported from the upper basin of the Rio Grande de Loiza is eventually deposited in the bottom of Lago Loiza, a water reservoir. Suspended sediment data were collected from 1983 to 1986 from a 208 sq mi area extending from the headwaters of Rio Grande de Loiza to the Lago Loiza. The drainage areas range from 0.82 sq mi to 89.8 sq mi. Results are based on three years of data from a network of five daily- record stations and five partial-record stations. A total of 2 ,114 sediment samples were collected and analyzed during the investigation. Instantaneous concentrations of suspended sediment varied from 0 to 56, 100 mg/L. Instantaneous suspended sediment loads ranged from 0 tons/day to 817,000 tons/day. A total of 152 suspended sediment samples were analyzed for particle size distribution. Suspended sediment in the streams is composed mostly of silt and clay. Sand content ranged from 6 to 80% during high flows. This report evaluates sediment transport and sediment-accretion rates in the lowermost 9-mile reach of Grove Creek by using hydrologic, dendrologic, and radioisotopic data collected at seven sites along the study reach.\r\n\r\nHydrologic data indicate two discharge frequencies. In the swampiest reaches downstream of site 5, inundation occurs 35 percent of the time; above this site, inundation occurs about 15 percent of the time. For the period from October 1982 through September 1987, overbank flows at site 4 occurred 82 times and lasted a total of 632 days with a maximum duration of 3 months.\r\n\r\nDistribution of tree species indicates that water-tolerant bald cypress have developed along the lowermost 7 miles of Grove Creek where the flood plain is inundated 35 percent of the time. These swampy conditions have been in existence across limited parts of the flood plain for the last 80 to 150 years. In contrast, the upstream sites have been comparatively dry for the same period.\r\n\r\nThe sediment that is transported in Grove Creek is predominately silt and clay. Measured suspended-sediment concentrations at discharges less than 100 cubic foot per second are less than 15 milligrams per liter; concentrations at higher discharges did not exceed 67 milligrams per liter. Calculated suspended-sediment loads ranged from 75 to 444 tons per year at the various data-collection sites on Grove Creek.\r\n\r\nSediment-accretion rates estimated from dendrologic data ranged from 0.03 foot per year to 0.06 foot per year. The highest accretion rates occur in the downstream swampy reaches and are due to channel braiding, low channel gradients and flow velocities, and high frequency and duration percentages of overbank flow, which result in the deposition of clay and silt over wide areas of the flood plain.\r\n\r\nSediment-accretion rates along Grove Creek were also estimated by radioisotope methods. Sediment cores from the flood plain showed detectable levels of cesium-137, lead-210, and radium-226. Cesium-137 was not present in the sediment cores below a depth of 10 inches; this indicates a maximum accretion rate of about 0.024 foot per year for the period 1952-87. Lead-210 and radium-226 data from these same sediment cores indicate an average accretion rate of 0.026 foot per year to a depth of about 2 feet. The maximum age of the flood-plain sediment at the 2-foot level is about 80 years. The atmosphere was confirmed as the source of excess lead-210 in flood-plain sediments by nearly matching calculated values of the lead-210 flux at each site with the measured value for atmospheric deposition.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBooks and Open-File Reports [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri894086","usgsCitation":"Stamey, T.C., 1989, Sediment transport and accretion and the hydrologic environment of Grove Creek near Kenansville, North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 89-4086, iv, 30 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri894086.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160486,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1989/4086/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58723,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1989/4086/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","city":"Kenansville","otherGeospatial":"Grove Creek","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-77.8338,35.1781],[-77.769,35.146],[-77.7521,35.108],[-77.7484,35.0221],[-77.7303,35.0076],[-77.6786,34.9726],[-77.6509,34.9243],[-77.685,34.7392],[-77.6852,34.7328],[-77.6806,34.7205],[-77.919,34.715],[-77.9244,34.7214],[-77.9361,34.7239],[-77.944,34.7227],[-77.9541,34.7192],[-77.9621,34.7153],[-77.9653,34.7203],[-77.9697,34.7209],[-77.9737,34.7187],[-77.9765,34.7183],[-77.9793,34.7169],[-77.9849,34.7166],[-77.9989,34.7182],[-78.0033,34.721],[-78.0104,34.7288],[-78.0176,34.7312],[-78.0249,34.7286],[-78.0289,34.7251],[-78.044,34.7271],[-78.0618,34.7288],[-78.0787,34.7241],[-78.1011,34.7258],[-78.1129,34.7224],[-78.1232,34.7139],[-78.1339,34.7091],[-78.135,34.71],[-78.1493,34.7202],[-78.1974,34.7428],[-78.1938,34.7559],[-78.1793,34.8011],[-78.1732,34.8201],[-78.1684,34.8345],[-78.1672,34.8382],[-78.1466,34.9023],[-78.1483,34.926],[-78.1487,34.9319],[-78.1496,34.9401],[-78.15,34.9478],[-78.1539,34.9969],[-78.1551,35.0396],[-78.1597,35.0801],[-78.1712,35.0934],[-78.1707,35.1152],[-78.1629,35.1374],[-78.1639,35.1896],[-78.077,35.175],[-78.0445,35.1927],[-78.0259,35.1942],[-78.0186,35.194],[-78.0057,35.1911],[-77.9867,35.1844],[-77.9823,35.1812],[-77.9787,35.1707],[-77.9703,35.166],[-77.9546,35.1652],[-77.9448,35.1728],[-77.9302,35.1739],[-77.9202,35.1696],[-77.9113,35.1645],[-77.9098,35.1581],[-77.9015,35.1521],[-77.8971,35.1488],[-77.8895,35.1582],[-77.8855,35.1618],[-77.8338,35.1781]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Duplin\",\"state\":\"NC\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fbf6b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stamey, T. Most of the projects in the current Nevada District program can be classified as either basic-data acquisition (about 25%) or hydrologic interpretation (about 75 %). About 52% of the activities are supported by cooperative agreements with State and local agencies. Technical projects supported by other Federal agencies make up about 23% of the program, and the remaining 25% consists of data collection, research, and interpretive projects supported directly by the U.S. Geological Survey. Water conditions in Nevada during the 4 years covered by this report were by no means average, with 1 very wet year (1986) and 2 very dry years (1987-88). The major water resources issues include: water allocation in the Truckee-Carson River basin; irrigation return flow contamination of the Stillwater Wildlife Management Area; effects of weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site; assessment of potential long-term impacts of the proposed Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository; and drought. Future water-resources issues in Nevada are likely to center on water supply for and the environmental effects of, the rapidly growing population centers at Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko; impacts of operations at the Nevada Test Site; management of interstate rivers such as the Truckee and Colorado Rivers; hydrologic and environmental impacts at heavily mined areas; and water quality management in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The aquifer is the major source of water and natural spring flow in the area. The aquifer was simulated as a one-layer system with constant vertical recharge and discharge rates. Calibrated transmissivities ranged from 8,640 sq ft/day in the northern part of the area to nearly 13,000,000 sq ft/day near large springs. Calibrated inflows were about 2,708 cu ft/sec; of this, about 2,565 cu ft/sec discharged as natural spring flow and 137 cu ft/sec discharged as upward leakage along the coast. The model was used to show how the system might respond to large manmade stresses. Withdrawal of 116 cu ft/sec from a hypothetical regional well field resulted in potentiometric-surface drawdowns ranging from 0.1 to 1.7 ft and declines of generally less than 0.2 ft along the coast. Total spring flow decreased 5%, and the effect on individual springs varied from 0.1 to 8.0%. Withdrawal of 62 cu ft/sec from the 4-sq-mi node at each spring resulted in six of seven springs to the south of the Chassahowitzka River contributing 50% of their flow to pumpage. Springs located north of the Chassahowitzka River contributed as much as 18% of their flow to pumpage. The reported results from the six laboratories involved were analyzed for agreement using descriptive statistics. The constituents and properties included: tritium, plutonium-238, plutonium-239, -240 (undivided), strontium-90, americium-241, cesium-137, total dissolved chromium, selected dissolved trace metals, sodium, chloride, nitrate, selected purgeable organic compounds, and specific conductance. Agreement could not be calculated for purgeable organic compounds, trace metals, some nitrates and blank sample analyses because analytical uncertainties were not consistently reported. However, differences between results for most of these data were calculated. The blank samples were not analyzed for differences. The laboratory results analyzed using descriptive statistics showed a median agreement between all useable data pairs of 95%. Each of the lakes was sampled five times to determine pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, transparency, and concentration of dissolved chloride. Three determinations of chlorophyll were made for each of the lakes near the end of the study, and additional determinations were made for a few lakes of particular interest.
\n
Most of the lakes have been incorporated into the city's storm-runoff system for use as retention basins during large storms. The chemistry of the lakes appears to be degraded by urban runoff. Chloride concentrations were significantly higher in six lakes than during the previous study, and remained elevated (about 30 milligrams per liter) in four other lakes. The association between increased chloride and specific conductance with runoff from urban areas suggests that the lakes are subject to contamination by chloride commonly present in urban runoff, and chloride concentrations harmful to aquatic life may have been associated with high specific conductance measured in one of the lakes.
\n
Analysis of the data collected for this study indicate that the chemistry of the lakes changes, adjusting to a variety of influences including (1) alternate loading and flushing by runoff, (2) excessive average-annual precipitation, (3) changing ground-water and lake interactions, and (4) changing land use in the lake watersheds. Some lakes affected by urban runoff had reduced concentrations of total phosphorus; however, other lakes unaffected by urban runoff also had significantly lower phosphorus, suggesting that increased precipitation may have diluted the lake water. Ten phosphorus-loading models tested or developed during the previous study generally were found to be inadequate for describing the results of this study. The trophic status of 12 lakes improved but declined in the other 4 lakes, and productivity increased 38 percent in what had been the least-eutrophic lake.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri864331","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the city of Eagan, Minnesota","usgsCitation":"Tornes, L., 1989, Effect of urban runoff on the quality of lakes in Eagan, Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4331, iv, 64 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864331.","productDescription":"iv, 64 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119669,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4331/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58973,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4331/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","city":"Eagan","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -93.10895919799805,\n 44.86195288021061\n ],\n [\n -93.10741424560545,\n 44.77464578614771\n ],\n [\n -93.23152542114258,\n 44.77428020677966\n ],\n [\n -93.22998046875,\n 44.8278737920029\n ],\n [\n -93.22551727294922,\n 44.82957822522573\n ],\n [\n -93.21521759033203,\n 44.83615199553088\n ],\n [\n -93.20938110351561,\n 44.84114269070498\n ],\n [\n -93.20680618286133,\n 44.84625466193982\n ],\n [\n -93.20388793945312,\n 44.8523397505366\n ],\n [\n -93.2028579711914,\n 44.858059147643786\n ],\n [\n -93.2025146484375,\n 44.86207455511034\n ],\n [\n -93.18775177001953,\n 44.860736117070026\n ],\n [\n -93.15668106079102,\n 44.861466178040175\n ],\n [\n -93.14809799194336,\n 44.861709529639704\n ],\n [\n -93.1450080871582,\n 44.86243957826663\n ],\n [\n -93.13093185424805,\n 44.862561252137745\n ],\n [\n -93.11256408691406,\n 44.86243957826663\n ],\n [\n -93.10895919799805,\n 44.86195288021061\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae799","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tornes, L. Data have been collected there by the U.S. Geological Survey since 1982. The watershed is in a wilderness area of the Cascade Range and is downwind of an industrial and urban area that produces chemical compounds found in acidic precipitation. The lake is considered sensitive to acidic inputs from atmospheric deposition and streamflow. The mean annual discharge of the Goat Lake outflow is 35 cu ft/sec; precipitation on the watershed is calculated to be about 170 in/yr. The inflow to Goat Lake is sufficient to replace the entire contents of the lake basin on an average every 21.5 days, or 17 times/year. Water in Goat Lake, and that of the inlet and outlet, is of low ionic strength and of calcium-bicarbonate type. The lake, although considered oligotrophic, is sufficiently deep to stratify thermally, and summer dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the hypolimnion are depressed. Even though alkalinity and specific conductance at Goat Lake are in the range considered sensitive to acidic inputs , the pH of water in the lake has consistently ranged from 6.1 to 7.2, indicating that the lake is not acidified at this time. Hydrographs of observed discharge at 83 streams in East Tennessee and 38 in West Tennessee were used in the study. Statistical analyses were performed by comparing simulated (or computed) hydrographs, derived by application of the Georgia dimensionless hydrograph, and dimensionless hydrographs developed from Tennessee data, with the observed hydrographs at 50 and 75% of their peak-flow widths. Results of the tests indicate that the Georgia dimensionless hydrography is virtually the same as the one developed for streams in East Tennessee, but that it is different from the dimensionless hydrograph developed for streams in West Tennessee. Because of the extensive testing of the Georgia dimensionless hydrograph, it was determined to be applicable for East Tennessee, whereas the dimensionless hydrograph developed from data on streams in West Tennessee was determined to be applicable in West Tennessee. As part of the dimensionless hydrograph development, an average lagtime in hours for each study basin, and the volume in inches of flood runoff for each flood event were computed. By use of multiple-regression analysis, equations were developed that relate basin lagtime to drainage area size, basin length, and percent impervious area. Similarly, flood volumes were related to drainage area size, peak discharge, and basin lagtime. These equations, along with the appropriate dimensionless hydrograph, can be used to estimate a typical (average) flood hydrograph and volume for recurrence-intervals up to 100 years at any ungaged site draining less than 50 sq mi in East and West Tennessee. Locally, in areas of river meander where point bars characteristically form, trough structures forming festoon patterns are numerous. At a few localities, sets of nearly horizontal strata occur between tabular-planar sets and are interpreted to be the deposits of very fast currents of the upper flow regime; elsewhere, uncommon lenses and beds of silt, clay, or organic matter consisting of leaves and twigs, seem to be the result of quiet-water settling through gravity. \r\n\r\nBy far the most common grain size represented in the tabular-planar and wedge-planar cross-strata of the sandwave deposits is medium sand (? - ? millimeter) as determined by screen analyses. Many samples, however, also contain moderate quantities of coarse or very coarse sand. Eolian dunes on top of the sand-wave deposits are dominantly fine grained. The river channel sands were determined to be largely moderately well sorted, although in some places they were mostly well sorted, and in others, mostly moderately sorted.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O. ;\r\nFor sale by the Books and Open-File Reports Section, U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2326B","usgsCitation":"McKee, E.D., 1989, Sedimentary structures and textures of Rio Orinoco channel sands, Venezuela and Colombia: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2326, viii, 23 p. :ill.
