The aquifer is the major source of water and natural spring flow in the area. The aquifer was simulated as a one-layer system with constant vertical recharge and discharge rates. Calibrated transmissivities ranged from 8,640 sq ft/day in the northern part of the area to nearly 13,000,000 sq ft/day near large springs. Calibrated inflows were about 2,708 cu ft/sec; of this, about 2,565 cu ft/sec discharged as natural spring flow and 137 cu ft/sec discharged as upward leakage along the coast. The model was used to show how the system might respond to large manmade stresses. Withdrawal of 116 cu ft/sec from a hypothetical regional well field resulted in potentiometric-surface drawdowns ranging from 0.1 to 1.7 ft and declines of generally less than 0.2 ft along the coast. Total spring flow decreased 5%, and the effect on individual springs varied from 0.1 to 8.0%. Withdrawal of 62 cu ft/sec from the 4-sq-mi node at each spring resulted in six of seven springs to the south of the Chassahowitzka River contributing 50% of their flow to pumpage. Springs located north of the Chassahowitzka River contributed as much as 18% of their flow to pumpage. Reduction of river discharge will affect the upstream extent of saltwater intrusion in the rivers; however, under certain reduced low-flow discharges, the estimated change in upstream extent of saltwater intrusion is on the order of several tenths of a mile and frequently is within the range of predicted error. Data on flow, tides, and salinity describe the physical characteristics of the Weeki Wachee, Crystal, and Withlacoochee River systems. Vertical and longitudinal salinity profiles indicate that salinity of the rivers increases downstream and varies substantially at any given location. The Weeki Wachee River system is the best mixed of the three. The Crystal River system exhibited the next best mixed system, and the Withlacoochee River system exhibited the most variation in its salinity regime. The daily maximum upstream extent of salinity intrusion is described by multiple linear-regression analysis based on daily mean streamflow of each river and high-tide stage of the gulf. The major aquifers in the study area are the Tuscaloosa, Pottsville, and Bangor aquifers. The Pottsville aquifer is the most extensively used in the study area. The aquifer consists of sandstones and conglomerates with fractures and bedding plane openings. The Tuscaloosa aquifer, primarily used in the west and southwest part of the study area, is composed of sands and gravels in the Tuscaloosa Group. The Bangor aquifer, the least used aquifer in the study area, consists of limestone with bedding planes, solution cavaties, and fractures. All three aquifers are recharged throughout their outcrop areas and are susceptible to contamination from the surface within these areas. The Tuscaloosa aquifer is the most susceptible aquifer to contamination within the study area because of the absence of confining layers, shallow depth to the water surface, and relatively uniform porosity and permeability of aquifer materials. The Pottsville and Bangor aquifers are less susceptible to surface contamination than the Tuscaloosa aquifer; generally having lower permeability and receiving less recharge than the Tuscaloosa aquifer thereby making surface contamination less likely. Flow reversals generally occur on each tide throughout most of the tidal reach, their upstream limit determined primarily by freshwater inflow and tide. Flow reversals occur at river mile 18.9 whenever freshwater inflows are less than about 1,000 cu ft/sec. Velocities were less than 0.3 ft/sec more than half the time at river mile 18.9. The volume of the flood and ebb tidal flows in the midreach of the tidal river (mile 11.5) on July 12-13, 1984, was about five times the volume of flood and ebb tidal flow near the upstream end of the tidal reach July 10-11, 1984 (mile 18.9). Salinity varied along the 26-mile river reach, across channel and with depth, depending upon complex patterns of flow, freshwater runoff, wind, tide, and salinity in Charlotte Harbor. Daily variations in salinity increased downstream and variations were larger near the surface than near the bottom. Regression analysis indicated that the location of the 0.5 ppt salinity will move upstream more than 2 river miles if low flows are reduced by 50%. Freshwater flushing of the lower 20-mile tidal reach, approximated from freshwater replacement time, varied from about 2 days during heavy freshwater runoff to 40 days during extreme low flows. The purpose of the study was to develop a data set that would help define the groundwater-flow system of the Pasco Basin. This report contains the basic data, without interpretation, that were collected from the start of the project in February 1986 through January 1989. Information presented is from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, State of Washington Department of Ecology , US Army Corps of Engineers, Kennewick Irrigation District, and the Survey, and consists of well location and construction data, records of water levels in the wells,  and aquifer designations for each well. The aquifer designation represents the geohydrologic unit to which the well is reported to be open. In the four experiment-A solutions, nitric acid provided nitrate-ion concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 10.0 mg/L and that had pH values ranging from 3.8 to 5.0. In the five experiment-B solutions, sodium nitrate provided nitrate-ion concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 mg/L. The pH was adjusted to about 4.5 for each of the solutions by addition of sulfuric acid. In the four experiment-C solutions, nitric acid provided nitrate-ion concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 mg/L. Major cation and anion concentrations were added to each solution to simulate natural deposition. Aliquots were removed from the 13 original solutions and analyzed by ion chromatography about once a week for 100 days to determine if any changes occurred in nitrate-ion concentrations throughout the study period. No substantial changes were observed in the nitrate-ion concentrations in solutions that had initial concentrations below 4.0 mg/L in experiments A and B, although most of the measured nitrate-ion concentrations for the 100-day study were below the initial concentrations. In experiment C, changes in nitrate-ion concentrations were much more pronounced; the measured nitrate-ion concentrations for the study period were less than the initial concentrations for 62 of the 67 analyses. The chemical data consist of laboratory determinations of total nutrients, major ions, and trace metals. The biological data consist of total coliform, fecal coliform, and fecal streptococcus bacteriological analyses, and benthicmacroinvertebrate population analyses. Brillouin's diversity index, maximum diversity, minimum diversity, and evenness for each sample, and median and mean Brilloiuin's diversity index, standard deviation, and standard error of the mean The dominant water type is calcium magnesium bicarbonate at shallow depths, and evolves toward sodium bicarbonate at depth. Calcium magnesium sulfate chloride type waters occur less commonly and are associated with shallow wells, the absence of a thick overburden, and agricultural land use. Dissolved-solids concentrations generally are less than 500 mg/L. Water in the Saddle Mountains unit has a mean dissolved-solids concentration of 488 mg/L. Nitrogen species and sulfate concentrations relate to overburden thickness and land use. Water in the Wanapum unit, below the Saddle Mountains unit, has a mean dissolved- solids concentration of 270 mg/L. High nitrogen concentrations (10 mg/L or greater) occur mostly in wells with depths less than 300 ft in areas with little or no overburden in the central part of the plateau. The Grande Ronde unit, below the Wanapum, has the lowest mean dissolved- solids concentrations, 230 mg/L, and nitrogen concentrations ar less than 2 mg/L. The results of biological investigations that have been conducted throughout the basin since 1900 are summarized and their relevance to stream-water-quality assessment is described, particularly their relevance to the upper Illinois River basin pilot project for the National Water Quality Assessment program. Four general categories of biological investigations were identified: Populations and community structure, chemical concentrations in tissue, organism health, and toxicity measurements. Biological investigations were identified by their location in the basin and by their relevance to each general investigation category. The most abundant literature was in the populations and community structure category. Tissue data were limited to polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, dioxin, and several metals. The most cited measure of organism health was a condition factor for fish that associates body length with weight or body depth. Toxicity measurements included bioassays and the Ames Tests. The bioassays included several testing methods and test organism. Reports of these investigations are published and available to the public. To accomplish this mission, the Division requires substantial computer technology to process, store, and analyze data from more than 57,000 hydrologic sites. The Division 's computer resources are organized through the Distributed Information System Program Office that manages the nationwide network of computers. The contract that provides the major computer components for the Water Resources Division 's Distributed information System expires in 1991. Five work groups were organized to collect the information needed to procure a new generation of computer systems for the U. S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division. Each group was assigned a major Division activity and asked to describe its functional requirements of computer systems for the next decade. The work groups and major activities are: (1) hydrologic information; (2) hydrologic applications; (3) geographic information systems; (4) reports and electronic publishing; and (5) administrative. The work groups identified 42 functions and described their functional requirements for 1988, 1992, and 1997. A few new functions such as Decision Support Systems and Executive Information Systems, were identified, but most are the same as performed today. Although the number of functions will remain about the same, steady growth in the size, complexity, and frequency of many functions is predicted for the next decade. No compensating increase in the Division 's staff is anticipated during this period. To handle the increased workload and perform these functions, new approaches will be developed that use advanced computer technology. The advanced technology is required in a unified, tightly coupled system that will support all functions simultaneously. The new approaches and expanded use of computers will require substantial increases in the quantity and sophistication of the Division 's computer resources. The requirements presented in this report will be used to develop technical specifications that describe the computer resources needed during the 1990's. Users of the software can add, update, and delete land-use and land-cover data. The software also provides capabilities to group, print, and summarize the data.\r\n\r\nThe land-use and land-cover data-base software supports multiple data-base systems so that data can be accessed by persons in different offices. Data-base systems are organized in a tiered structure. Each data-base system contains all the data stored in the data-base systems located in the lower tiers of the structure. Data can be readily transmitted from lower tiers to high tiers of the structure. Each of the lakes was sampled five times to determine pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, transparency, and concentration of dissolved chloride. Three determinations of chlorophyll were made for each of the lakes near the end of the study, and additional determinations were made for a few lakes of particular interest.</p>\n<p>Most of the lakes have been incorporated into the city's storm-runoff system for use as retention basins during large storms. The chemistry of the lakes appears to be degraded by urban runoff. Chloride concentrations were significantly higher in six lakes than during the previous study, and remained elevated (about 30 milligrams per liter) in four other lakes. The association between increased chloride and specific conductance with runoff from urban areas suggests that the lakes are subject to contamination by chloride commonly present in urban runoff, and chloride concentrations harmful to aquatic life may have been associated with high specific conductance measured in one of the lakes.</p>\n<p>Analysis of the data collected for this study indicate that the chemistry of the lakes changes, adjusting to a variety of influences including (1) alternate loading and flushing by runoff, (2) excessive average-annual precipitation, (3) changing ground-water and lake interactions, and (4) changing land use in the lake watersheds. Some lakes affected by urban runoff had reduced concentrations of total phosphorus; however, other lakes unaffected by urban runoff also had significantly lower phosphorus, suggesting that increased precipitation may have diluted the lake water. Ten phosphorus-loading models tested or developed during the previous study generally were found to be inadequate for describing the results of this study. The constituents and properties included: tritium, plutonium-238, plutonium-239, -240 (undivided), strontium-90, americium-241, cesium-137, total dissolved chromium, selected dissolved trace metals, sodium, chloride, nitrate, selected purgeable organic compounds, and specific conductance. Agreement could not be calculated for purgeable organic compounds, trace metals, some nitrates and blank sample analyses because analytical uncertainties were not consistently reported. However, differences between results for most of these data were calculated. The blank samples were not analyzed for differences. The laboratory results analyzed using descriptive statistics showed a median agreement between all useable data pairs of 95%. The highest median chloride and total dissolved-solids concentrations were found in wells in high-density residential areas (more than five dwellings/acre), and the highest median nitrate, sulfate, and calcium concentrations were found in wells in agricultural and high density residential areas. Relatively low median concentrations of inorganic chemical constituents were found in wells in undeveloped and low-density residential areas (1 or fewer/acre): volatile organic compounds were rarely detected in these same areas. The highest concentrations and most frequent detection of volatile organic compounds were in industrial and commercial areas. The most commonly detected volatile organic compounds were 1,1,1-trichloroethane (24% of wells), tetrachloroethylene (20%), trichloroethylene (18%), chloroform (9%), and 1,2-dichloroethylene (5%). The spatial distributions of trichloroethylene, chloroform and other volatile organic compounds in the upper glacial aquifer are directly correlated with population density in the two-county area. Cross-sections of the channel and some lateral sections were run at each bridge in June and July 1987, and significant scour at piers supporting each of these bridges was recorded. Each of the four geophysical systems proved to have advantages and limitations. The ground penetrating radar system used single and dual 80 megahertz antennae floating in the water to transmit and receive the signal. The method was successful in water less than 25 ft deep, and in resistive earth materials. The geometry of existing scour holes and the extent of post-scour sedimentation were clearly defined. The color fathometer, operating at a signal frequency of 20 kilohertz, delineated existing scour-hole geometry, detected infilling of scour holes, and provided qualitative information about the physical properties of sediments. The tuned transducer, operating at a signal frequency of 14 kilohertz, defined scour-hole geometry and the extent of post-scour sediment deposition. Both of these systems were effective in water greater than 5 ft deep. At a signal frequency of 200 kilohertz, the black-and-white fathometer could not penetrate post-scour deposits, but it was useful in defining existing scour-holed geometry in water of any depth.
