The peak discharge of Big Creek at Raleigh-Millington Road was almost twice the discharge of the 100-year flood discharge and that of Loosahatchie River near Arlington was about equal to the 50-year flood discharge. The inundated area and flood elevations are depicted on a map of Millington, Tennessee and vicinity. Water surface profiles for the peak of December 25, 1987, for Loosahatchie River, Big Creek, Royster Creek, North Fork Creek, Casper Creek, and an unnamed tributary to Big Creek are shown. Flood damages and cleanup costs for this record flood have been estimated at about $9.2 million. Other sources of freshwater are the streams draining the San Gabriel River basin and Lake Georgetown. Lake Georgetown, located on the North Fork San Gabriel River west of Georgetown, is a freshwater supply for some municipalities in the area, water in the San Gabriel River basin also supplies a variety of needs east of Georgetown. Because of the importance of the Edwards aquifer and the surface waters in the area, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Georgetown, conducted a monitoring program of the Edwards Aquifer and principal streams during water year 1988. The study area centered on Georgetown and encompassed an area of about 150 square miles (fig. 1).
\n
The freshwater resources in the Georgetown area have been the subject of three recent reports. Baker and others (1986) described the Edwards aquifer and the relation between recharge and discharge. Krietier and others (1987) provided fracture analysis, geologic mapping, ground-water chemistry, and the relation between rainfall and recharge in the study area. Land and Dorsey (1988) conducted an investigation to reassess the inclusion of the Georgetown Limestone as one of the geologic units comprising the Edwards aquifer. In addition, the Geological Survey publishes streamflow and water-quality data in the Water Resources Data for Texas report on an annual basis.
\n
The primary purpose of this report is to present a summary of the hydrologic data collected from the streams draining the San Gabriel River basin and from the Edwards aquifer during the 1988 water year (October 1987–September 1988). A secondary purpose is to add perspective to the 1988 data by including data from the previous 2 years (1986 and 1987) when available. Hydrographs for selected wells are included to show trends and lack of trends in water-level changes. The aquifer consists of gravel and sand in flood-plain and terrace deposits of Quaternary age. The aquifer supplies much of the water used for irrigation and aquaculture in eastern Arkansas. A large depression in the potentiometric surface caused by pumping for irrigation and aquaculture occurs in Arkansas, Lonoke, and Prairie Counties. The potentiometric surface was highest near the northwestern boundary and outcrop area of the aquifer in topographically high locations of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. The hydraulic gradient in the study area was generally southeastward or toward the centers of three cones of depression which have developed in response to pumping stresses. These measurements then were compared with similar measurements from spring 1983 to assess the changes in groundwater levels over the 2-year period for each of the basalt units. Configuration of the groundwater contours and water level changes reflect (1) recharge and discharge; (2) hydraulic conductivity; (3) use of imported surface water for irrigation; and (4) pumpage of groundwater. The movement of groundwater within each basalt unit is controlled mainly by the major rivers, streams, and coulees, whereas variations in flow directions between units are related to the occurrence, extent, and hydraulic conductivity of the basalt units and sedimentary interbeds and to differences in the amounts of recharge to each unit.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri884018","usgsCitation":"Lane, R.C., and Whiteman, K.J., 1989, Ground-water levels, spring 1985, and ground-water level changes, spring 1983 to spring 1985, in three basalt units underlying the Columbia Plateau, Washington and Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 88-4018, 4 Plates: 38.00 × 35.88 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri884018.","productDescription":"4 Plates: 38.00 × 35.88 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394790,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46945.htm"},{"id":82212,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4018/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82211,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4018/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82210,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4018/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82209,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4018/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":161612,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon, Washington","otherGeospatial":"Columbia Plateau","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.5833,\n 45\n ],\n [\n -116.3167,\n 45\n ],\n [\n -116.3167,\n 48.125\n ],\n [\n -121.5833,\n 48.125\n ],\n [\n -121.5833,\n 45\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667515","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lane, R. The corrosiveness of groundwater in the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system in New Jersey has been estimated by calculating values for the Aggressive Index, using groundwater chemistry data. A contour map of Aggressive-Index values shows that groundwater is very corrosive in the vicinity of Ocean County, New Jersey. Areas with the least corrosive water are generally along the coast, whereas areas with the most corrosive water are farther inland. Maps of the potentiometric surface, water level change, and depth to water illustrate the effects of large withdrawals for irrigation on water levels in the aquifer. The Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer is composed of Quaternary Flood plain and terrace deposits. Water in the aquifer generally is confined by an upper silt and clay layer. The regional direction of groundwater flow is south and southeast, except where affected by large withdrawals for irrigation by stream reaches that are hydraulically connected with the alluvial aquifer. The largest well yields range from 1,000 to 3,000 gal/min. Recharge to the aquifer principally is by infiltration of precipitation and water for surface water bodies. Both the spring and fall potentiometric surface maps show extensive cones of depression that result from large withdrawals for irrigation-one centered beneath Arkansas County, and another beneath western Poinsett and Cross Counties. Average water level differences between the spring and fall indicate a general decline of about 3 ft. The largest declines in water levels between 1981 and 1986 and the deepest water levels in 1986 occurred in areas most affected by large withdrawals for irrigation, as shown by the water level change map and depth to water map. The largest water level declines mainly occurred in central Lonoke County and in western Poinsett County. The potentiometric-surface map for this aquifer, compiled from wastewater level measurements made during spring 1986, indicates a generally eastward and southward hydraulic gradient. The potentiometric surface also shows three major cones of depression resulting from groundwater withdrawals for industrial and public supplies; one centered in Columbia County, one in Union County, and one in Jefferson County. The water level change maps for the Sparta-Memphis aquifer for the period between spring 1981 and spring 1986 show large areas of both rise and decline in water levels across the study area. Largest rises occurred in parts of Jefferson, Columbia, and Phillips Counties, whereas largest declines occurred in parts of Union County.
