Three aquifers and two confining units were delineated within the study area. From the surface down, they are: (1) the surficial aquifer; (2) the upper confining unit; (3) the Canal Creek aquifer; (4) the lower confining unit; and (5) the lower confined aquifer. The aquifer materials range from fine sand to coarse sand and gravel. Clay lenses were commonly found interfingered with the sand, isolating parts of the aquifers. All the units are continuous throughout the study area except for the upper confining unit, which crops out within the study area but is absent in updip outcrops. The unit also is absent within a Pleistocene paleochannel, where it has been eroded. The surficial and Canal Creek aquifers are hydraulically connected where the upper confining unit is absent, and a substantial amount of groundwater may flow between the two aquifers. Currently, no pumping stresses are known to affect the aquifers within the study area. Under current conditions, downward vertical hydraulic gradients prevail at topographic highs, and upward gradients typically prevail near surface-water bodies. Regionally, the direction of groundwater flow in the confined aquifers is to the east and southeast. Significant water level fluctuations correspond with seasonal variations in rainfall, and minor daily fluctuations reflect tidal cycles. In the northern half of the study area, the Barnwell and underlying McBean aquifers are considered one aquifer owing to the absence of the tan clay-confining unit between them. In the southern half of the study area they are separated by the tan clay into two aquifers. Underlying these aquifers, and separated from them by the green clay-confining unit, is the Congaree aquifer. Hydraulic conductivities of the aquifers range from 0.00000001 to 0.0001 ft/sec. Directions of groundwater flow in the Barnwell and McBean aquifers are to the north, with a component of flow directed downward across the green clay and into the Congaree aquifer. The direction of flow in the Congaree aquifer is to the northwest. Water in these aquifers evolves from an acidic (pH &lt; 6.5) mixed-cation type in the Barnwell aquifer to an alkaline (pH &gt; 8) calcium bicarbonate water in the Congaree aquifer. Laboratory experiments indicate that reactions between sediments of the Barnwell aquifer and a salt-solution waste to be stored at the study area would significantly reduce the permeability of the sediment, thereby limiting the movement of the waste in groundwater at the site. The major aquifers are the Pliocene-Miocene, Upper Floridan, Lisbon, Nanafalia-Clayton, and Providence-Ripley. The largest pumping centers in the area are Andalusia and Monroeville, where groundwater use is about 5 and 4 million gal/day, respectively. Estimated maximum withdrawal in 1987 for all uses in the area was about 44 million gal/day. Depressions have developed in the potentiometric surfaces of the Lisbon aquifer near Andalusia and Opp, the Nanafalia-Clayton aquifer near Luverne, Andalusia, Beatrice, and Monroeville, and the Providence-Ripley aquifer at Greenville. Significant declines in the potentiometric surfaces of the other major aquifers are not apparent. Recharge areas for all major aquifers are susceptible to contamination, but the probability of contamination of the Lisbon, Nanafalia-Clayton, and Providence-Ripley aquifers is low because the recharge areas are remote from areas of the withdrawal. The depressions in the recharge area for the Upper Floridan aquifer and the area where the Pliocene-Miocene aquifer is overlain by the gravelly sands of the Citronelle Formation are highly susceptible to contamination from the surface. The data were collected from June 1978 through September 1983. Rainfall, streamflow and suspended-sediment data were collected with automatic recording and sampling equipment. Data were collected in Tioga County from an agricultural area that was unaffected by mining and from a forested area prior to surface mining. Data were collected from two areas affected by active surface mining in Tioga County and from an area in Clearfield County being mined by the contour-surface method. Data also were collected from three areas, Tioga, Clearfield, and Fayette Counties, during and after reclamation. The efficiencies of sediment-control pounds in Clearfield and Fayette Counties also were determined. The average annual sediment yield from the agricultural area in Tioga County, which was 35 percent forested, was 0.48 ton per acre per year, and the yield from the forested area prior to mining was 0.0036 ton per acre per year. The average annual sediment yields from the areas affected by active surface mining were 22 tons per acre from the improved haul road and 148 tons per acre from the unimproved haul road. \r\n\r\nThe average annual sediment yield from the site in Clearfield County that had been prepared for mining was 6.3 tons per acre. The average annual sediment yield from the same site while it was being mined by the contour method was 5.5 tons per acre per year. The sediment-control pond reduced the average annual sediment yield to 0.50 ton per acre while the site was prepared for mining and to 0.14 ton per acre while the site was being mined. Because the active surface mining reduced the effective drainage area to the pond, the sediment yield decreased from 0.50 to 0.14 ton per acre. \r\n\r\nAverage annual suspended-sediment yields from the reclaimed site in Tioga County were 1.0 ton per acre during the first year, when vegetation was becoming established, and 0.037 ton per acre during the second year, when vegetation was well established. The average annual sediment yield below a 21.2-acre, reclaimed, surface mine in Clearfield County that had been mined by the contour method was 15 tons per acre during the first year when vegetation was becoming established. However, the average annual sediment yield below a sediment-control pond at this reclaimed site in Clearfield County was 0.30 ton per acre. \r\n\r\nData collected from a 4.2-acre reclaimed area that had been surface mined by the block-cut method in Fayette County showed that annual sediment yields from the area were 77 tons per acre in 1981 (no vegetation), 32 tons per acre in 1982 (sparse vegetation), and 1.0 ton per acre in 1983 (well-esatablished vegetation). Chemical composition of water in the recharge basin and ground water from two separate flow paths beneath the basin was determined from samples taken during two artificial-recharge tests.</p><p>Changes between recharge-basin water and ground water from the termination of the flow paths during the spring 1987 test included increases in alkalinity, calcium, sodium, and silica and decreases in pH and dissolved oxygen. Interpretation of processes modifying the chemical composition of recharge water was complicated by mixing of recharge water with pre-existing ground water within the Oakes aquifer.</p><p>In the summer 1987 test, the recharge basin was lined with a decomposing organic mat. The purpose of the organic mat was to sustain large infiltration rates for a longer period of time and to evaluate the effect of a decomposing organic mat on water quality during sustained recharge-basin operation. Larger infiltration rates with the organic mat in place allowed recharge water to reach the termination of the flow paths prior to apparent mixing with pre-existing ground water for a period of as much as approximately 405 hours of recharge-basin operation. </p><p>Changes between recharge-basin water and ground water from the termination of the flow paths during the summer 1987 organic-mat test included increases in alkalinity, calcium, and silica and decreases in pH, dissolved oxygen, and total organic carbon. Detected changes between recharge-basin water and ground water from the termination of the flow paths were interpreted using a mass-balance geochemical model. Chemical changes of at least 2 milligrams per liter were modeled in terms of reactions, including those due to respiration of micro-organisms, dissolution of carbon dioxide, possible production of organic acids, dissolution of amorphous silica, cation exchange, and dissolution of carbonate minerals. The results were compared between stations. The analyses included data from water years 1975-86 at the Flathead station and water years 1979-86 at the Columbia Falls station. The seasonal Kendall test was applied to adjusted concentrations for variables related to discharge and to unadjusted concentrations for the remaining variables. Slope estimates were made for variables with significant trends unless data were reported as less than the detection limit. At the Flathead station, concentrations of dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, dissolved nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen (total and dissolved), total organic nitrogen, and total phosphorus increased during the study period. Concentrations of total nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen and dissolved iron decreased during the same period. At the Columbia Falls station, concentrations increased for calcium and magnesium and decreased for sulfate and dissolved phosphorus. No trends were detected for 10 other variables tested at each station. Data for the Flathead station were reanalyzed for water years 1979-86. Trends in the data increased for magnesium and dissolved nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen and decreased for dissolved iron. Magnesium was the only variable that displayed a trend (increasing) at both stations. The increasing trends that were detected probably will not adversely affect the water quality of the Flathead River in the near future. The April 1986 test included the pumping of 2 test wells for 72 hours at a combined discharge rate of 1,375 gal/min, and the measurement of water levels in 10 observation wells. No lateral recharge boundary in Raritan Bay affected the observed water-level changes. Assuming leaky artesian conditions, the average transmissivity and storage coefficient of the upper aquifer are 7,754 sq ft/day and 0.00044 respectively. The leakance of the combined confining units ranges from 0.000030 to 0.000076/day/ft. On the basis of lithologic samples from a nearby well, the overlying and underlying confining units were assumed to have similar hydraulic properties. The spatial data sets required by the project must have line features that match closely enough across map boundaries to ensure full line topology when adjacent files are joined by the computer. Automated edgematching techniques are evaluated as to their effects on positional accuracy. Interactive methods such as selective node-matching and on-screen editing are also reviewed. Interactive procedures complement automated methods by allowing supervision of edgematching in a cartographic and hydrologic context. Common edge conditions encountered in the preparation of the Northwest Rivers data base are described, as are recommended processing solutions. Suggested edgematching procedures for 1:100,000-scale hydrography data are included in an appendix to encourage consistent processing of this theme on a national scale. Data for water years 1952-63 and 1975-85 from the Powder River near Locate, Montana, and water years 1967-68 and 1976-85 from the Powder River at Sussex, Wyoming, were analyzed. Data for the earlier period near Locate were discharge-weighted monthly mean values, whereas data for the late period near Locate and at Sussex were from periodic samples. For data from water years 1952-63 near Locate, increasing trends were detected in sodium and sodium-adsorption ratio; no trends were detected in specific conductance, hardness, non-carbonate hardness, alkalinity, dissolved solids, or sulfate. For data from water years 1975-85 near Locate, increasing trends were detected in specific conductance, sodium, sodium-adsorption ratio, and chloride; no trends were detected in hardness, noncarbonate hardness, alkalinity, dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, potassium, or sulfate. At Sussex (water years 1967-68 and 1976-85), increasing trends were detected in sodium, sodium-adsorption ratio, and chloride, and a decreasing trend was detected in sulfate. No trends were detected in specific conductance, alkalinity, or dissolved solids. When the 1967-68 data were deleted and the analysis repeated for the 1976-85 data, only sodium-adsorption ratio displayed a significant (increasing) trend. Because the study was exploratory, causes and effects were not considered. The results might have been affected by sample size, number of seasons, heterogeneity, significance level, serial correlation, and data adjustment for changes in discharge. The first test, on May 12, 1978, entailed pumping the Magothy aquifer for 12 hours; the second on July 30-31, 1985, entailed pumping the upper glacial aquifer for 24 hours. Drawdown and recovery data from both tests were analyzed through analytical solutions and curve-matching procedures, and the resulting hydraulic values were used as initial values in a finite-element radial-flow numerical model to simulate the observed drawdowns and recoveries. Storativity values obtained by all methods were consistent with published estimates; but hydraulic conductivity values were higher than published estimates. The simple analytical solutions and curve-matching procedures gave reasonable values of most terms quickly, but the greatest confidence is in the estimates made with the finite-element model. These estimates for the Magothy aquifer were: horizontal hydraulic conductivity of 100 ft/d; ratio of horizontal to vertical conductivity, 5; and specific storage, 0.0001. Estimates for the upper glacial aquifer were: horizontal hydraulic conductivity, 380 ft/d; ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity, 2.5; and specific yield, 0.15. Depth-integrated samples were collected during all flow conditions. The records for this station are considered good.</p>\n<p>The mean monthly suspended-sediment loads in the Brazos River at Richmond ranged from 2,500 to 91,000 tons during the period of record. The annual suspended-sediment load ranged from 404,500 to 30,800,000 tons and averaged about 10,900,000 tons. The minimum annual load of 404,500 tons occurred during the 1984 water year, and the maximum annual load of 30,800,000 tons occurred during the 1968 water year.</p>\n<p>Suspended-sediment load and discharge varied throughout the period of study. A double-mass curve indicated that the relation between discharge and sediment load remained constant.</p>\n<p>The data collected annually during the study were used to develop a regression model. The stations were set on spot elevations of relative high density and shown on high-quality l:50,000-scale topographic base maps.</p>\n<p>The error in a gravity reading due to uncertain elevation is estimated to be less than 0.33 mgal. Determination of station coordinates was aided by helicopter-mounted LORAN-C navigation units. The cost/time factors involved in the survey compared favorably with commercial surveys done with inertial-guidance systems but without the l:50,000-scale maps. As topographic-map coverage becomes available, gravity surveys should be run over the entire Arabian Shield.</p>\n<p>The Arabian Shield is generally comprised of Proterozoic sedimentary rocks metamorphosed to varying degrees and intruded by plutonic rocks. The northeastern Shield is traversed by the north-trending Nabitah mobile belt, a zone of flexing, faulting, shearing, and mineralization. The complete Bouguer gravity field defines the boundary of the mobile belt, as well as a tectonic platelet that has undergone especially conspicuous thrusting and other types of deformation within the mobile belt.</p>\n<p>Many plutons intruded the metamorphic rocks in the survey area. The youngest rocks are peraluminuous, contain anomalously high tin and tungsten concentrations, and are similar to other tin and tungsten-bearing granites elsewhere. Pronounced gravity lows are associated with these plutons, but not all of a pluton or its associated mineralized rocks may crop out. Thus, gravity surveys of areas with similar plutonism are important in the study of plutonic mineralization.</p>\n<p>Quaternary deposits are distributed along mountain fronts and wadis. Gravity lows are commonly associated with the wadis, but their low amplitude suggests alluvial thicknesses of less than 25 m. This implies that the valleys are not structurally controlled by extension and that the alluvial aquifers, from which nearly all domestic water is produced, are relatively thin.</p>\n<p>The greatest complete Bouguer anomaly is associated with basaltic lava flows located in the northeastern part of the survey area. The thickness of the basalt in outcrop does not account for the anomalies with the highest amplitudes, but the latter may be due to the presence of a basalt-filled vent. Those anomalies that are present do not define the basalt flows well, but the largest free-air anomaly occurs over the southwestern margin of the Salma Caldera, located about 15 km from the basalt flows. The results of biological investigations that have been conducted throughout the basin since 1900 are summarized and their relevance to stream-water-quality assessment is described, particularly their relevance to the upper Illinois River basin pilot project for the National Water Quality Assessment program. Four general categories of biological investigations were identified: Populations and community structure, chemical concentrations in tissue, organism health, and toxicity measurements. Biological investigations were identified by their location in the basin and by their relevance to each general investigation category. The most abundant literature was in the populations and community structure category. Tissue data were limited to polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, dioxin, and several metals. The most cited measure of organism health was a condition factor for fish that associates body length with weight or body depth. Toxicity measurements included bioassays and the Ames Tests. The bioassays included several testing methods and test organism. The State was subdivided geographically into nine groundwater areas, including the northeastern Wyoming groundwater area, based on major structural features. Northeastern Wyoming was the first of the nine areas to be evaluated using these procedures. The stratigraphic units of Wyoming were grouped into five rock units on the basis of age, similar depositional environments, and water-yielding properties. Activities likely to affect groundwater in northeastern Wyoming were evaluated. The most important monitoring needs in the area are related to: (1) Oil-field waterflooding; (2) surface mining of coal; (3) increasing municipal use of groundwater, and (4) need for general resource information. The 18 observation wells in the existing (1986) network meet most of the needs identified. Seven additional wells need to be added to the network, whereas four wells in the network can be discontinued. Water level data from the 18 observation wells are presented by county. Maps and hydrographs are accompanied by brief discussions of information related to the records obtained. The simulated area is 4 ,100 sq mi, and it includes three aquifers. The Entrada-Navajo aquifer includes the Wingate, Navajo, and Entrada Sandstones. The Morrison aquifer includes the sandstone units of the Morrison Formation. The Dakota aquifer includes the Burro Canyon Formation and Dakota Sandstone. The simulation of the groundwater system had a mean error (error is absolute value of residual) of 70 ft for the Entrada-Navajo aquifer, 67 ft for the Morrison aquifer and 79 ft for the Dakota aquifer. The hydraulic conductivity used in the simulation ranged from 0.38 to 0.47 ft/day. Simulated inflow to the groundwater system was 30,000 acre-ft/yr. 48% of the inflow is from infiltration of precipitation within the simulated area, and 42% is from infiltration in 145 sq mi of mountain areas adjacent to the simulated area. Hydrologic and chemical-quality data were collected from four rural drainage basins, including two agricultural basins (7.4 and 4.8 acres) cultivated in tobacco and small grains, a mixed rural land-use basin (665 acres) currently under standard land-management practices, and a forested control basin (44 acres) characterizing background conditions. Mean concentrations of total nitrite plus nitrate were 1.0 milligrams per liter from the agricultural basin under standard land-management practices. This was nearly 10 times greater than concentrations from the forested basin.
