The average thickness is 22 ft and the maximum thickness is 54 ft. A digital model was developed to simulate groundwater flow in the Big Sioux aquifer in Moody County. The model was calibrated for steady-state conditions using average hydrologic conditions from 1970 through 1979. Steady-state simulated water levels from 11 wells averaged 0.4 ft higher than measured water levels. The model was calibrated for transient conditions using 1983 water levels. The average monthly difference in 27 observation wells between simulated and measured water levels was 2.63 ft. Sensitivity analyses showed that recharge rate and evapotranspiration extinction depth had the largest effect on simulated water levels. A 4-inch/year increase in the recharge rate caused simulated water levels to rise 1.7 ft. A 2.5-ft increase in the extinction depth caused simulated water levels to decline 0.8 ft. The calibrated model was used to simulate the effects of three hypothetical hydrologic situations. The first situation simulated the transient effects of 1983 pumpage under severe drought conditions. The second hypothetical situation simulated the steady-state effects of increased pumping at a rate of 5,200 acre-ft/year under average hydrologic conditions. The third hypothetical situation simulated the transient effects of pumping 5,200 acre-ft/year under severe drought conditions. Stored water was not depleted in any nodes after these simulations. The potential effect of a new line channel of the Pecos River in McMillan delta in southeastern New Mexico would be an increase of less than 11,000 acre-ft/year. This increase includes overflow of 300 acre-ft from the present Pecos River channel, seepage losses of 3,600 acre-ft from the river bed and tributary inflow of 7,100 acre-ft. The potential effects of drains at the north end of the study area would be additional water of about 6,100 acre-ft within the first few years. In order to drain this much water, the drains would have to be dredged to a lower depth 6 to 8 mi to the south. Impoundment in Brantley Reservoir will cause increases in groundwater storage. The quantity of increased storage will depend on average reservoir pool levels. Major Johnson Springs probably will cease to flow at the conservation-pool level, and southward groundwater leakage from the Major Johnson Springs aquifer could increase. Large quantities of water may move in and out of storage in the Major Johnson Springs aquifer as the Brantley Reservoir pool changes between minimum pool and conservation pool levels. A ground--and surface-water monitoring network is needed to determine changes in groundwater storage caused by Brantley Reservoir. Water levels in selected wells need to be measured periodically during operation of the reservoir. Additional streamflow-gaging stations need to be established and surface-water samples analyzed to determine changes caused by a drainage system and Brantley Reservoir. The purpose of this report is to present the results of a compilation of available low flow data in the form of tables and ' 7Q10 flow profiles ' (minimum average flow for 7 consecutive days with a 10-yr recurrence interval)(7Q10 flow plotted against distance along a stream channel) for all streams reaches of the Upper Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers and tributaries where sufficient data of acceptable accuracy are available. Drainage area profiles are included for all stream basins larger than 5 sq mi, except for those in a few remote areas. This report is the third in a series of reports that will cover all stream basins north of the Fall Line in Georgia. It includes the Georgia part of the Savannah River basin from its headwaters down to and including McBean Creek, and Brier Creek from its headwaters down to and including Boggy Gut Creek. It also includes the Ogeechee River from its headwaters down to and including Big Creek, and Rocky Comfort Creek (tributary to Ogeechee River) down to the Glascock-Jefferson County line. Flow records were not adjusted for diversions or other factors that cause measured flows to represent other than natural flow conditions. The 7-day minimum flow profile was omitted for stream reaches where natural flow was known to be altered significantly. In the foothills of Colorado, annual floodflows are derived from snowmelt at high elevations in the mountain regions, from rainfall at low elevation in the plains or plateau regions, or from a combination of rain falling on snow or mixed population hydrology. Above approximately 7,500 ft, snowmelt dominates; rain does not contribute to the flood potential. Regional flood-frequency relations were developed and compared with conventional flood-estimating technique results, including an evaluation of the magnitude and frequency of the probable maximum flood. Evaluation of streamflow data and paleoflood investigations provide an alternative for evaluating flood hydrology and the safety of dams. The study indicates the need for additional data collection and research to understand the complexities of the flood hydrology in mountainous regions, especially its effects on flood-plain management and the design of structures in the flood plain. At that time, EDB was detected in water samples from one domestic well and four irrigation wells. Concentrations ranged from less than 0.01 micrograms/L to 3.3 micrograms/L. The investigation in November 1987 revealed the groundwater contamination was limited to the 4-sq-mi area in the vicinity of Buck Hole, a sinkhole in a swampy depression in the central part of the County. In three of the five wells in which EDB was detected, concentrations have not changed significantly since August 1983. However, in one irrigation well near Buck Hole, the concentration decreased from 110 to 0.7 microgram/L since October 1981. In another irrigation well near Buck Hole, the concentration decreased from 26 to about 2.5 microgram/L during that period. The groundwater level data indicate that from Buck Hole, the hydraulic gradient in the Upper Floridan aquifer is about 2.8 ft/mi toward the east. However, the movement of EDB from the area of relatively high concentration near Buck Hole in the direction of inferred flow lines is not apparent. Although concentration gradients were not detected along flow lines, the movement of water induced by pumping wells W4 and W5 produced short-term decreasing and increasing trends in EDB Concentrations in wells W4 and W5, respectively. Low-flow and high-flow characteristics are also listed for standard periods of consecutive days. A station description, tables of streamflow characteristics, and graphs of mean monthly streamflow and duration of daily mean streamflow are presented for each station. Termed the Apalachicola River Quality Assessment, the study emphasized interrelations among hydrodynamics, the flood-plain forest, and the nutrient-detritus flow through the river system to the estuary. This report summarizes major findings of the study. Data on accumulation of toxic substances in sediments and benthic organisms in the river were also collected. \r\n\r\nBecause of the multiple uses of the Apalachicola River system, there are many difficult management decisions. The river is a waterway for shipping; hence there is an economic incentive for modification to facilitate movement of barge traffic. Such modifications include the proposed construction of dams, levees, bend easings, and training dikes; ditching and draining in the flood plain; and dredging and snagging in the river channel. The river is also recognized as an important supplier of detritus, nutrients, and freshwater to the Apalachicola Bay, which maintains an economically important shellfish industry. The importance of this input to the bay creates an incentive to keep the river basin in a natural state. Other values, such as timber harvesting, recreation, sport hunting, nature appreciation, and wildlife habitat, add even more to the difficulty of selecting management strategies.\r\n\r\nWater and nutrient budgets based on data collected during the river assessment study indicate the relative importance of various inputs and outflows in the system. Waterflow is controlled primarily by rainfall in upstream watersheds and is not greatly affected by local precipitation, ground-water exchanges, or evapotranspiration in the basin. On an annual basis, the total nutrient inflow to the system is nearly equal in quantity to total outflow, but there is a difference between inflow and outflow in the chemical and physical forms in which the nutrients are carried. The flood plain tends to be a net importer of soluble inorganic nutrients and a net exporter of particulate organic material. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of long-term records shows that dam construction in the upstream watersheds and at the Apalachicola headwaters has had little effect on the total annual waterflow but has probably suppressed low-flow extremes. Other effects include riverbed degradation and channelization which have to do with alteration of the habitat for aquatic biota and changes in flood-plain vegetation. \r\n\r\nWhatever management decisions are made should take into account the impact on the natural flooding cycle. Flooding is crucial to the present flood-plain plant community and to the production, decomposition, and transport of organic material from that community. The area is characterized by many parallel mountain ranges and valleys trending north-south. Stream channels usually are well defined and steep within the mountains, but on reaching the alluvial fan at the canyon mouth, they may diverge into numerous distributary channels, be discontinuous near the apex of the fan, or be deeply entrenched in the alluvial deposits. Larger rivers normally have well-defined channels to or across the valley floors, but all terminate at lakes or playas. \r\n\r\nMajor floods occur in most parts of the Great Basin and result from snowmelt, frontal-storm rainfall, and localized convective rainfall. Snowmelt floods typically occur during April-June. Floods resulting from frontal rain and frontal rain on snow generally occur during November-March. Floods resulting from convective-type rainfall during localized thunderstorms occur most commonly during the summer months. \r\n\r\nMethods for delineating flood-prone areas are grouped into five general categories: Detailed, historical, analytical, physiographic, and reconnaissance. The detailed and historical methods are comprehensive methods; the analytical and physiographic are intermediate; and the reconnaissance method is only approximate. Other than the reconnaissance method, each method requires determination of a T-year discharge (the peak rate of flow during a flood with long-term average recurrence interval of T years) and T-year profile and the development of a flood-boundary map. The procedure is different, however, for each method. Appraisal of the applicability of each method included consideration of its technical soundness, limitations and uncertainties, ease of use, and costs in time and money. \r\n\r\nOf the five methods, the detailed method is probably the most accurate, though most expensive. It is applicable to hydraulic and topographic conditions found in many parts of the Great Basin. \r\n\r\nThe historical method is also applicable over a wide range of conditions and is less expensive than the detailed method. However, it requires more historical flood data than are usually available, and experience and judgement are needed to obtain meaningful results. \r\n\r\nThe analytical method is also less expensive than the \r\ndetailed method and can be used over a wide range of conditions in which the T-year discharge can be determined directly. Wastes deposited during 50 years of plant operations (1906-1956) have extended the shore line 100 ft and left the park soil contaminated with a number of hazardous material. Soil contaminants include polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, cyanide, and metals. PAHs and metals have been detected in Lake Union sediments. Maximum total PAH concentrations exceeded 100 million micrograms/kilogram in some places in the soils of the park at 6-inch depths and in some lake sediments. Other contaminants present are much lower in concentrations. The park is on glacial drift overlain by gasification waste materials and clean fill. Waste materials include sand and gravels, mixed with lampblack, oil, bricks, and other industrial wastes. Groundwater flows through the soils and waste toward Lake Union. Vertical groundwater movement is uncertain, but is assumed to be upward near Lake Union. Concentrations of most soil contaminants are probably low in the groundwater and in Lake Union due to the low solubilities and high sorptive characteristics of these contaminants. However, no water quality data are available to confirm this premise. Both the Alkali Creek and Castle Valley Ridge coal-lease tracts are near areas where coal is currently (1987) mined by underground methods from the Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation. The Alkali Creek and Castle Valley Ridge areas have intermittent streams in which flow after snowmelt runoff is locally sustained into midsummer by springflow. The only perennial stream is South Fork Corner Canyon Creek in the Castle Valley Ridge area. Peak flow in both areas generally is from snowmelt runoff; however, peak flow from thunderstorm runoff in the Alkali Creek area can exceed that from snowmelt runoff. Estimated annual source-area sediment yield was 0.5 acre-ft/sq mi in the Alkali Creek lease tract and it was 0.3 acre-ft/sq mi in the Castle Valley Ridge lease tract. Groundwater in the Alkali Creek area occurs in perched aquifers in the Flagstaff Limestone and in other formations above the coal-bearing Blackhawk Formation. The principal source of recharge to the aquifers is snowmelt on outcrops. Faults may be major conduits and control the movement of groundwater. Groundwater discharges at formation contacts, between zones of differing permeability within a formation, near faults and into mines. Water sampled from 13 springs in the Alkali Creek area contained dissolved solids at concentrations ranging from 273 to 5,210 mg/L. Water sampled from 17 springs in the Castle Valley Ridge area contained dissolved solids at concentrations ranging from 208 to 579 mg/L. The composition of water from a recently abandoned part of an active mine the Wasatch Plateau closely resembles that of water discharging from a nearby mine that has been abandoned for more than 30 years. Mining of the Alkali Creek and Castle Valley Ridge coal-lease tracts likely will result in decreased pH and increased concentration of dissolved solids of the water that enters the mines. Even after mining, the water, especially in the Castle Valley Ridge area, may still meet Utah 's drinking water standards. This is a slight decrease from the 1980 estimate of 690 million gal/day. Of the total use, 63% was from surface-water sources and 37% was from groundwater sources. About 75% of the total water use was for agriculture, 16% was for domestic and commercial use, 8% was for industrial and mining use, and 1% was for thermoelectric and geothermal uses. Of the total used, 361 million gal/day were consumed and 313 million gal/day were returned to the surface- and groundwater system. Water use by agriculture, the largest user, was mostly for irrigation. Total use was 516,000 acre-ft (460 million gal/day) for irrigation of 397,000 acres. Non-irrigation use, mainly for livestock, was 47.1 million gal/day. About 12% of the total use was by public-water suppliers. Seventy-five percent of the deliveries by public-water suppliers were for domestic use by 78% of the population. In addition to offstream use, instream use was substantial because of hydroelectric-power generation by the four dams on the Missouri River. During 1985, 60,500 million gal/day were used to generate 6,095 gigawatt-hr of electricity.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
