The purpose of the regional study is to describe and evaluate the major aquifer systems in sediments of Tertiary and younger age in parts of 10 states (Grubb, 1984). In the southeast lowlands of Missouri, the sub-surface stratigraphy and structural configuration of geologic units need to be described in detail to define the major aquifer syustems in the area. The purpose of this report is to describe the subsurface geologic framework for Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic units in the southeast lowlands of Missouri and to correlate these units to those in adjecent States using geophysical and geologic methods (index map). Geophysical logs of wells were used to determine which units are aquifers or confining beds. The drilling of the U.S. Geological Survey test well 1-X in New Madrid County, Missouri, and the subsequent interpretation of geohydrologic data from the well have provided valuable information used in the preparation of this report.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/i1875","usgsCitation":"Mesko, T.O., 1988, Subsurface geology of Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic units in southeast Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 1875, 2 Plates: 40.79 x 54.10 inches and 36.42 x 18.93 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/i1875.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 40.79 x 54.10 inches and 36.42 x 18.93 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":187893,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/i1875.GIF"},{"id":327511,"rank":701,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1875/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":327512,"rank":702,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/1875/plate-2.pdf"},{"id":107160,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9963.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"9963"}],"scale":"500000","country":"United States","state":"Missouri","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.50561523437499,\n              37.309014074275915\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.36279296875,\n              37.00255267215955\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.329833984375,\n              37.142803443716836\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.12109375,\n              37.06394430056685\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.978271484375,\n              36.87962060502676\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.978271484375,\n              36.641977814705946\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.066162109375,\n              36.421282443649496\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.329833984375,\n              36.25313319699069\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.50561523437499,\n              35.96022296929667\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.6044921875,\n              35.85343961959182\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.80224609374999,\n              35.7286770448517\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.5712890625,\n              35.71975793933433\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.59326171875,\n              36.491973470593685\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.37353515625,\n              36.69485094156225\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.19775390625,\n              36.730079507078415\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.02197265625,\n              37.03763967977139\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.98901367187499,\n              37.16031654673677\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.835205078125,\n              37.26530995561875\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.593505859375,\n              37.32648861334206\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.50561523437499,\n              37.309014074275915\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699a12","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mesko, T. Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced by the radioactive decay of uranium. Radon produced by uraniferous rocks and soils may enter a house through porous building materials and through openings in walls and floors. Radon gases has a tendency to move from the higher pressure commonly existing in the soil to the lower pressure commonly existing in the house. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA, 1986a) estimates that elevated levels of indoor radon may be associated with 5,000 to 20,000 of the 130,000 lung cancer deaths per year. They also estimate that 8 to 12 percent of the homes in the United States will have annual average indoor radon levels exceeding 4 picoCuries per liter of air (pCi/L). Above this level, the U.S. EPA recommends homeowners take remedial action. May factors control the amount of radon which may enter a home from the geologic environment. Soil drainage, permeability, and moisture content effect the amount of radon that can be released from rocks and soils (known as the emmanation) and may limit or increase how far it can migrate. Well drained, highly permeable soils facilitate the movement of radon. Soils with water content in the 8 to 15 percent range enhance the emmanation of radon (Lindmark, 1985). Daily and seasonal variations in soil and indoor radon can be caused by meteorologic factors such as barometric pressure, temperature, and wind (Clements and Wilkening, 1974; Schery and other, 1984). Construction practices also inhibit or promote entry of radon into the home (U.S. EPA, 1986b). In general, however, geology controls the source and distribution of radon (Akerblom and Wilson, 1982; Gundersen and others, 1987, 1988; Sextro and others, 1987; U.S. EPA, 1983; Peake, 1988; Peake and Hess, 1988). The following sections describe: 1) the methods used to measure radon and equivalent uranium (eU) in soil; 2) the radon potential ratings that were developed for this study; and 3) the characteristics of the rocks and soils in Montgomery County that give them their radon potential.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf2043","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Montgomery County Government","usgsCitation":"Gundersen, L., Reimer, G., Wiggs, C., and Rice, C.A., 1988, Map showing radon potential of rocks and soils in Montgomery County, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2043, 1 Plate: 55.24 x 42.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2043.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 55.24 x 42.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":184818,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2043/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":278829,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2043/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"62500","datum":"National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929","country":"United States","state":"Maryl","county":"Montgomery County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.5,38.916667 ], [ -77.5,39.333333 ], [ -76.916667,39.333333 ], [ -76.916667,38.916667 ], [ -77.5,38.916667 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a95e4b07f02db659e36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gundersen, L.C.","contributorId":19154,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gundersen","given":"L.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reimer, G.M.","contributorId":59800,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reimer","given":"G.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wiggs, C.R.","contributorId":57152,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiggs","given":"C.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rice, C. The EEZ extends from the seaward limit of state waters (3 nautical mi from shore) to 200 nautical mi offshore, and it includes the continental shelves. Within the context of the EEZ natural resource assessment effort, the purpose of this study is to delineate, on a regional basis, the potential for heavy-mineral placers on the U.S. Continental Shelf in the western and northern Gulf of Mexico from the United States-Mexico border to the Alabama-Florida state line. This map is intended to serve as a general guide for placer exploration. It shows favorable sea-floor areas for placer occurrence in water depths ranging from 0 to 100 fathoms (600 ft). The map can be used as a guide for focusing costly exploratory efforts, such as coring operations and geophysical surveys.\r\n\r\nThe potential economic value of heavy-mineral placer concentrations on the U.S. Continental Shelf is a function of both geologic and economic variables. Geologic variables include the composition and concentration of the heavy-mineral assemblages and their environment of deposition. Economic variables include the current world market price of extracted metals, as well as the cost of mining, processing, and marketing the metals. These economic factors, in turn, are tempered by the nation1s socio-political climate, which determines its need for specific mineral resources at any given time.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf2037","usgsCitation":"Shideler, G.L., 1988, Heavy-Mineral Placer Potential Map of the U.S. Continental Shelf, Western and Northern Gulf of Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2037, Map Sheet: 41.5 x 42 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2037.","productDescription":"Map Sheet: 41.5 x 42 inches","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":182498,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1988/2037/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":88873,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1988/2037/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -97.5,25.666666666666668 ], [ -97.5,30.666666666666668 ], [ -87.5,30.666666666666668 ], [ -87.5,25.666666666666668 ], [ -97.5,25.666666666666668 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a62e4b07f02db63637d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shideler, Gerald L.","contributorId":89137,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shideler","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264544,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Storms of the magnitude that caused this flood are not uncommon to the southern great plains. Such storms are seldom documented in large urban areas. Total rainfall depth and rainfall distribution in the Tulsa metropolitan area during the May 26-27 storm were recorded by 16 recording rain gages. This report presents location of recording rain gages with corresponding rainfall histograms and mass curves, lines of equal rainfall depth (map A), and flood magnitudes and inundated areas of selected streams within the city (map B).\r\nThe limits of the study areas (fig. 1) are the corporate boundaries of Tulsa, an area of about 185 square miles. Streams draining the city are: Dirty Butter, Coal, and Mingo Creeks which drain northward into Bird Creek along the northern boundary of the city; and Cherry, Crow, Harlow, Joe Haikey, Fry, Vensel, Fred, and Mooser Creeks which flow into the Arkansas River along the southern part of the city. Flooding along Haikey, Fry, Fred, Vensel, and Mooser Creeks was not documented for this report. The Arkansas River is regulated by Keystone Dam upstream from Tulsa (fig. 1). The Arkansas River remained below flood stage during the storm.\r\n\r\nFlooded areas in Tulsa (map B) were delineated on the topographic maps using flood profiles based on surveys of high-water marks identified immediately after the flood. The flood boundaries show the limits of stream flooding. Additional areas flooded because of overfilled storm drains or by sheet runoff are not shown in this report.\r\n\r\nData presented in this report, including rainfall duration and frequency, and flood discharges and elevations, provide city officials and consultants a technical basis for making flood-plain management decisions.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ha707","usgsCitation":"Bergman, D.L., and Tortorelli, R.L., 1988, Flood of May 26-27, 1984 in Tulsa, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 707, 2 maps on 1 sheet :col. ;64 x 65 cm. and 34 x 35 cm., sheet 95 x 147 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ha707.","productDescription":"2 maps on 1 sheet :col. ;64 x 65 cm. and 34 x 35 cm., sheet 95 x 147 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":189995,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":90212,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/707/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":90213,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/707/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":90214,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/707/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"48000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -96.11749999999999,35.950833333333335 ], [ -96.11749999999999,36.25 ], [ -95.75,36.25 ], [ -95.75,35.950833333333335 ], [ -96.11749999999999,35.950833333333335 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae6d1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bergman, DeRoy L.","contributorId":87606,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bergman","given":"DeRoy","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":278506,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tortorelli, Robert L.","contributorId":65071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tortorelli","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":278505,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This is one of a series of preliminary reports that describe what is currently known (1984) about the geometry and hydrologic properties of the aquifer systems, and the chemistry of the water in known or potential aquifers. The study is part of a U.S. Geological Survey program for evaluating regional aquifer systems nationwide. A regional aquifer system is defined as “an areally extensive set of aquifers which are linked in some way, such as hydraulically or economically” (Harrill and others, 1983, p. 2). The purpose of the Great Basin RASA is to evaluate aquifer system in the Great Basin by developing a better understanding of recharge and discharge processes, delineating individual ground-water flow systems, and developing mathematical models of representative flow systems. Harrill and others (1983) provide a more complete background of both the national RASA program and the Great Basin RASA.

The purpose of this atlas is to delineate and describe the major hydrogeologic units in the Great Basin region and to identify those units that (1) constitute regional aquifers or (2) act as barriers to the movement of ground water. The scope of this atlas, however, is limited to a brief geologic overview of the Great Basin: lithology and areal extent of units, major structural features, and influence of tectonic events. In addition, the water-bearing characteristics of each unit are briefly summarized.

This atlas is Chapter A of the three-part Hydrologic Atlas series. Chapter B shows ground-water levels in the Great Basin region, and Chapter C shows inferred directions of ground-water flow and individual flow systems.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ha694A","usgsCitation":"Plume, R.W., and Carlton, S.M., 1988, Hydrogeology of the Great Basin region of Nevada, Utah, and adjacent states: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 694, 1 Sheet: 33.00 x 43.57 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha694A.","productDescription":"1 Sheet: 33.00 x 43.57 inches","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":186302,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":335841,"rank":4,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ha694C","text":"HA-694-C","linkHelpText":"Major ground-water flow systems in the Great Basin region of Nevada, Utah, and adjacent states"},{"id":335842,"rank":2,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ha694B","text":"HA-694-B","linkHelpText":"Ground-water levels in the Great Basin region of Nevada, Utah, and adjacent states"},{"id":89349,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/694a/plate-1.pdf","text":"Hydrologic Atlas HA-694-A","size":"16.14 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"1000000","country":"United States","state":"Nevada, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Great Basin region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.32226562500001,\n              42.24478535602799\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.32226562500001,\n              38.77121637244273\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.86206054687499,\n              34.867904962568716\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.983154296875,\n              37.01132594307015\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.24755859375,\n              40.136890695345905\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.060791015625,\n              42.293564192170095\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.32226562500001,\n              42.24478535602799\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ee4b07f02db6150f4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Plume, Russell W. rwplume@usgs.gov","contributorId":2303,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Plume","given":"Russell","email":"rwplume@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":277625,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carlton, Stephen M.","contributorId":56309,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carlton","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":277626,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
